A Heart of Ice and Jade
I finished SWBTS a while ago and I love general ouyang so much! I’ve been waiting to read the book since 2020 but only got my book a few days ago, ahhhh it feels so surreal! well written eunuch antags are so rare in historical fiction and I never thought I’d live to see one beautifully written like a trans mlm, this really satisfies my incredibly specific niche (I’ve been fascinated by the concept for years), sorry I don’t know how to authentically describe how much ouyangs character means to me, he’s genuinely (almost) everything I’ve wanted to see in historical fiction, like oh my goodness... he raised the eunuch antag bar way too high now I’m gonna be disappointed when I read anything else
thank you if you read my entire paragraph above I feel like its really hard to articulate just how much I love ouyang as a gay dude with a eunuch hyperfixation... hope u like the art!

song-style inspired summer dress by 织造司
btw some shop could just lie through their teeth. they called the sleeveless top 仿黄昇墓背心 (beixin with pattern based on the artifact from Huang Sheng’s Tomb), but overally the silhouette was a Ming-style Bijia. On top of that, their product has a shoulder seam with an angled shoulder! That is NOT a hanfu characteristic.

Rare Portraits Depicting Hanfu Worn with Right Over Left Lapel Closing (左衽).
Tumblr media
Thirteenth Ancestor Portrait from Portrait Album of Wu’s Ancestors 吳氏先祖容像十三. Ni Renji. Painted sometime between the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty during the artist’s life (1607-1685). Yiwu Museum, Zhejiang, China [image source].
For the Han, the left lapel was considered Yang and the right one Yin and, thus, living people placed the left lapel over the right one to symbolize Yang (life) covering Yin (death). That’s why only dead people had their right lapel over their left. In the case of the dead, Yin (death; right lapel) overtook Yang (life; left lapel). Moreover, the left over right lapel (右衽) served as an ethnic distinction for the Han.
However, not all living Han people followed this tradition and there are documented cases of them wearing their hanfu with the right lapel over the left one.
There are exceptions in which living Han Chinese would wear clothing with a zuoren closure. For example, in some areas (such as Northern Hebei) in the 10th century, some ethnic Han Chinese could be found wearing left-lapel clothing. It was also common for the Han Chinese women to adopt left lapel under the reign of foreign nationalities, such as in the such as in the Yuan dynasty. The practice of wearing the zuoren also continued in some areas of the Ming dynasty despite being a Han Chinese-ruled dynasty which is an atypical feature.

Fifth Ancestor Portrait from Portrait Album of Wu’s Ancestors 吳氏先祖容像五. Ni Renji. Painted sometime between the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty during the artist’s life (1607-1685). Yiwu Museum, Zhejiang, China [image source].
Other non-Han ethnicities, such as the Khitans and Xianbei, would preserve their 左衽 tradition even after adopting hanfu. It’s possible for these women (and its mostly women wearing hanfu depicted with 左衽) to be non-Han in origin or are Han but came from areas where 左衽 was still practiced due to non-Han ethnic influence. I remember reading somewhere that, South of the Yangtze, certain Han women wore their hanfu in both styles.
Since almost all of the portraits below are ancestor portraits and there are plenty of those where the women and men wear 右衽 despite being dead at the time of painting, it’s unlikely that the 左衽 depicted is meant to indicate that the woman is dead.

Ancestor Portrait. Unknown artist. Late 19th century. Qing Dynasty. Auguttes Auction House. [image source].
Note: Be careful when dating ancestor portraits. Many were painted posthumously and could depict ancestors from multiple previous generations. Just because the figures are seen wearing a dynasty’s distinctive clothing, does not necessarily mean that it was painted then. Some Qing Dynasty ancestor portraits depict ancestors from the Ming Dynasty and, thus, artists painted the figures with Ming clothing.

Chapter five
A/n: Hello there this chapter reader has a panic attack, so be warned. if you don't like this stuff. Ps, I can't come up with good titles. Sorry.
~That night~
You fell asleep, tried to the eventful day that occurred. As you dreamed, you knew something had changed. It played out the same tragic event, but the husband's face became clear. When you woke up at the end, you saw his face clear as day.
Chief.
You felt uneasiness when you woke, 'why was he in the husband's place?'. It felt too real now.
"It's just caused I hanged out with him yesterday," You try to reason with yourself. "Yeah, That's it." You got ready for the day.
'…Right?'
You try to shake the thought from your mind. But it had already left a stain of doubt.
~Days later, Outside of the Historical Museum~
'Well, this is it.' You thought as you stood outside of the museum.
'It seemed to be having a new exhibit.' Looking at banners that have images of old emperors and soldiers. You walked in as you had suspected Chief was inside. 'I didn't get a time… so hopefully, he is inside.'
You look around near the entrance, noticing the art and artifacts. How beautiful they still were, even after all these years. "Wow, would those scissors still work?" You whisper to yourself as your eyes gaze at a pair of green scissors with red stains.
"I'm sure with some oil, they would work good as new!" A familiar voice comes from behind, causing you to jump in surprise. Your turn to see Chief smiling as usual and waving at you. You sighed in relief as he walked to you and looked at the portraits on the wall. "Sorry for scaring you, dear." He apologized to you as you shook your head.
"No, it's fine." You smiled weakly, "I thought I might have been late." You said. "No, my dear, You're just in time." He said as his expression seemed to soften when his eyes laid on you. "Did you know the new exhibit they have opened? It's about the empire that The Great Monk and the pilgrims saved."
"Wow, I don't know that. Have you already seen this exhibit?" You chuckled as Chief took one of your hands. "Nope, I just read the sign." He laughed as he showed the sign saying something similar. You felt dumb for not seeing it before realizing you were holding hands.
He walked with you around the museum and talked about the artifacts there. You felt your face turning pink as peach as you both continued walking around.
'Should i say something? I mean, I don't mind.' You thought as he held on to your hand. You held on tighter to his hand as he kept talking before entering the new exhibit.
The exhibit had displays of artifacts, clothing, and pottery. Hanging on the walls are portraits of its people and the emperor. The armor and weapons of that time had their exhibition. You felt like you went brought back in time as you walked in.
"Wow, this is astounding!" You said as your eyes lit up with wonder as you both stopped in for a moment. Chief grinned at your enjoyment of the exhibit. "I'm glad you enjoy it, (Y/n). I had a feeling this might be to your taste." He said as he brought you to the displayed clothing.
You smiled as your eyes followed the beautiful fabric and the sewing. You didn't notice that Chief's eyes were just on you. He loved how your face and smiles were still the same as they were back then. "The person who made this must have been very skilled! I mean, the stitching and needlework are impressive." You expressed.
"I'm sure the lady who made this hanfu poured a lot of time into it," Chief said, without taking his eye off you. He knew who made it.
It was you in your previous life.
He had watched you dedicate your free time to create that hanfu. Chief would stay by your side when you made it. He knew how much it had meant to you. It was for your daughter when she was older. Sadly, the hanfu got lost amongst the rubble of the chaos. He was surprised that it was found intact.
Chief broke away from the thought as you asked him a question. "Chief? You okay?" You asked, seeing him dazed out. "Yes, I'm fine, my dear. Shall we keep looking?" He questioned you. You nodded your head and felt a squeeze on your hand.
You both went to the drawn portraits. You were staring at the emperor portraits and saw how they had some scratches and tears. You read the description of who he was and how he passed.
You were about talk to Chief, but you turned and saw his expression. He had his usual smile, but this smile seemed more enraged. His eye alone could rip the picture into shreds.
"Uhm, let's move on to a different one," you said as you took the lead. You held his hand tighter, pulling him away from the portrait to the others. There were some of its citizens, their families, and children. You found them charming. A tap on your shoulder caused you to turn to see an elderly lady.
"I'm sorry to bother you both on your date, but you both look similar to the painting." She spoke softly and pointed at one of them. It was of a small family. The couple did look like you and Chief with a young daughter. "Talk about finding your double," You whispered under your breath. You heard Chief mumbled, but you weren't sure what he said.
'Did he say "I still look amazing,"' You thought what probably said before you were interrupted.
"How lovely that you both found each other again." The elderly lady said before walking away. A small chuckled left your lips as you turned to Chief. "Well, that was weird…"
"Maybe she isn't too far off," He said before you both moved on to the weapons and armor exhibit. Goosebumps crawled up your skin, and you tried to snap out of it. Chief looked pleased, and you knew you had to keep going even if it made you feel squeamish.
As you both walked around, the uneasiness grew. Your mind couldn't hear Chief speaking. It wasnt long until you guys stopped in front of one of the suits of armor. You freeze in place as your eyes widen in dread.
Chief gave off a pleased grin as he gazed at it. He remembers how he was proudly wearing it, even with a useless emperor. He wore it proudly for Lady Bone Demon and (Y/n) back then. You saw his grin and felt like falling to your knees, carefully letting go of Chief's hand.
"I'm going to get some air." You said as you tried to move but felt your feet stuck in place. You only took a step or two back before Chief stopped you. He noticed you becoming a shade lighter.
A flash of it digging into your chest crossed your mind as Chief got closer. "My dear (Y/n), are you-" before he could finish his sentence, you cut him off.
"Yup, I'm alright! Maybe a bit queasy," You gave a forced laughed and brushed it off. "But let's keep looking." Grabbing his hand and almost rushing to another exhibit. Chief gave a small sigh before he stopped you and carried you out of the museum.
Bridal style again.
Finding a nice area outside with the least amount of people. "My dear, I think lying about your health isn't a good thing." He said sternly but with a soft smile as he put you on a bench. He was right, though.
"Sorry, I guess I just got uncomfortable in there." You said, looking down away from him. "Oh my dear, If you felt uncomfortable, you should have told me." He sat next to you, "I want you to have fun on this date. It wouldn't be as good if I had all of it."
You felt your face lightly blush as he said that. "I didn't want to ruin it, even if it made me feel some deja vu." You said. Chief grin disappeared for a moment before it became a concerned one. "Deja Vu?" He asked, and you nodded your head.
"Yeah, as if I was walking in the steps of someone before me." You spoke and made him sweat a bit. "What kind of steps?" He questioned you. "I guess how they died." That last word struck his heart. Chief hoped You had forgotten the worst part, but he was wrong. Still having he smiled, he asked. "It must have been hard then. I'm sorry…" He said in a somber tone and looked away.
"It's okay. I mean, it isn't your fault." You said. How he wished it was true. He chuckled sadly at the fact he had caused you harm in this life. You both sat in silence for a bit and felt the mood becoming bleak. You didn't want to be in a gloomy mood, so you got up and placed your hand in front of him.
"Hey, wanna get something to eat? There's a nice dessert shop near here." You asked him. Chief got back his usual smile, bouncing his head in agreement. "It would be wonderful to end it on a high note." He took your hand and followed you.
You both got some boba and cakes. Chief somehow knew your favorite flavor, but you didn't question it. You both talked about the better part of the museum. He watched you ramble on the beautiful clothing and its craftsmanship.
By the time the day was over, he brought you home and disappeared the same way as before, in a large cloud of blue puff, not before kissing your hand. He didn't ask for another date, but you had a feeling he wasn't far from you.
You fell on your bed and felt happy to have a good day. Even with that incident happened. You tried to put it aside, but your mind couldn't. You decided it would be a good idea to talk to one of your few friends about this.
Sandy.
He's a good listener even to crazy things like this.
~The next day and a few hours of working~
After finishing the vest, you decided to head to Sandy's place. As you walked to the harbor, you felt eyes on you. You turned to see no one but other people walking around and kids playing. Luckily you had a weapon on you in case some demons followed you. Pepper spray!
You got to Sandy's boat house, and he greeted you with a cup of tea. Sandy was a friend you met at a pet shop, buying a harness for Bai He cat. You both had pleasant conversations and share teas. You had a delightful chat, but he knew you got something bothering you. He asked you before spilling into the nightmare and deja vu.
You told him everything from the nightmare to meeting Chief to the incident on the date. Sandy nodded along as you unload everything. He took a sip as you finished, and you turned to him to see his reaction to it. Sandy had a simple smile before pulling out large books and scrolls.
"So it is possible!" He said. You were surprised that he had done his research on this matter. "(Y/n), do you know about reincarnation?" He asked, and you sighed with a nod.
"Then, I'm sure everything you are experiencing is what happened in your previous life. Via the dream and Deja Vu. All the pleasant and not so pleasant experiences." He said and patted your back in a way to comfort you.
"So, what makes Chief? Is he my past love then?" You jokingly said, but he nodded. You felt your heart race before your cheeks turned pink. "Well, isn't that something?" You didn't know how to react to this.
If it was the truth, that means he did end your life. So why is he nice to you now? Your mind raced with questions before Sandy snapped you back to earth.
"Hey, it's a lot to take in, but remember it best to go at your own pace. No need to take it all in at once." Handing you a cup of tea to relax. He was right, it was a lot, but you can get through it.
"Thanks, Sandy, you always know what to say," you smiled at him as one of his cats jumped on you. "Hey, Sandy? Why were you researching this kind of stuff?" You ask the blue guy, and he quickly laughs.
"Well, I had my thoughts on it for my friends, but I think it best saved for another time," he said before drinking his tea. Another thing he was right on. Before you left, a loud explosion occurred.

The End is Here
Tumblr media
"Wow, today has been a...helluva day. Okay, let's take a recap of the things i've learned...."
1) Monkey King is married to Liu Ér Mihou aka The Six-Eared Macaque. Who I have to admit is a pretty cool dude, not because he's hot, but he's married to Monkey King! We both had much in common, we both loved the theater, likes to sing, and other stuff, but that's for later.
2) Apparently the reason why Macaque was absent was because that bitch Jade-Face Princess had stolen an artifact of his, A Shadow Lantern, and he had to track her down to get it back.
3) The two of them have a child, well...children together. The little girl I met last episode is their daughter, adopted daughter. And lastly....The two most cutest monkey twins I've ever seen!!
Their like major cuteness!
The Twins, Rumble and Savage are twin clone Monkeys that were supposedly created by Macaque himself.
The little male monkey, Savage, was dark furred with grey skinned, short shaggy hair, had red face markings, yellow eyes, wearing a red qipao vest and black pants.
His twin sister, Rumble, had the same markings, color scheme as Savage, but with longer hair tied with a Fire lily hair clip, wears prince-nez glasses, a short sleeve hanfu dress with yellow clippings and black pants.
Aw man, I definitely can't wait to tell Tang and Mei all about this..."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MK was driving back to the city after having stayed at Flower Fruit Mountain for the past week. After the whole mess with The Jade-Face Princess, Monkey King and Macaque wanted to make sure her wounds were completely healed.
"Are you sure you're well enough, bud?" Monkey King asked in concern, looking over MK for any injuries.
"I'm okay now, Monkey King. I'm all better now." She reassured him, he sighed in worry. Macaque came over to him and rubbed his back. "Ease up, Peaches. I checked her over myself, the kid is in tip-top shape."
Bai He, Rumble and Savage ran past the two monkeys gave MK a big hug. "See you later, Monkey Princess!" MK smiled and hugged them back, "You too!" She ruffled their hair making them laugh. "Bye guys! I'll see you next week!" MK waved goodbye before leaving.
"Man, after all the crap that's happened. I just can't wait to get back home to the sweet smell of Noodles and Tranquility."
MK hummed a beat to a song on her phone, as she made her way back home from Flower Fruit Mountain. MK had sent a clone to the city at the beginning of the week to help out the gang in case something happened. For some reason she hadn't gotten any calls so she hoped everything was all right.
She returns to the noodle shop, not noticing the cracked sign above him as she hops out of the cart. "Guys! Guess who's back from training with Monkey ki-"
Her eyes widened, now noticing the army of bull clones in front of her. They were groaning, eyes glowing a light blue. one of the bull clones jumped down, roaring, as the others jumped forward. MK gasped, holding an order of noodles as she backed away, screaming.
But before the bull clones could even attack her, they are knocked back, as Pigsy's truck appears out of nowhere. MK gasps as her friends step out of the truck.
Tang noticed MK and immediately bolting over and tackling her into a hug, crying out in relief "My baby girl, Thank Buddha you're alright!!" Tang cried out in relief.
"Guys! What's going on? whoa-ho-ho! You look so awesome!" She compliments on their wardrobe, almost a Mad Max kinda vibe.
"Yeah, so uh, some stuff happened while you were away, got really kind of intense." Mei informed, rubbing her head.
"Bu-but I left you with one of my clones!"
"Oh, yes...she's been super helpful.." Tang said in a deadpanned voice. The clone in question, who stood beside Tang blinks in confusion when noticing the stares she was given.
"I don't know what to tell ya, guy." With that, the clone exploded, leaving behind a pile of hair.
"What's going on? What's with all the clones acting so strangely?" MK asked confused and shocked at what was happening.
"After you left-" but Mei was interrupted by Tang "Ahem, If you'll allow me" Tang said with a smirk, Mei groans "Go ahead, Mr. Tang" Mei said rolling her eyes in exasperation.
"Well, after you left, the Bull Clones attacked, but they were more powerful than before, we believe it's all tied back, to the Demon Bull King himself....he's conquered everything" Tang said finishing explaining "We tried calling you, but they brought down the power lines." Pigsy said.
MK's eyes were filled with worry, slowly replaced with anger as she gritted her teeth and clutched her fists tight making her knuckles white.
"Where is he? Where's DBK?" MK growls out.
"We're not sure. But there's pretty scary noises coming from the mountain." Sandy said with a frown and pointed to a far off point in the city, an area which had been abandoned for a long time.
MK frowned, then had a look of determination.
"Everyone, Get in." the teen said, everyone turns to her in confusion, MK only grins with determination, punching her fist into her hand.
"We're gonna stop him and bring back our city" MK said with a determined smirk, everyone smiled at her filled with their own determination as they piled into the truck, heading for the mountain.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
At the Flaming Foundry, Demon Bull King cackles, watching his bull clones wreak havoc on the city. "Look at them cower and run! With this power, even the great sage could not stop me!" Demon Bull King said with a sinister smile, Princess Iron Fan only frowns, her eyes laid on the glowing blue canister attached to her husband's back.
"Yes father we have finally taken our rightful place as the rulers of this city!" Red Son said looking at the screen, but suddenly the alarms sounded, as an image appeared on the hologram. Upon further inspection, they noticed it was a truck with MK and her friends inside.
'Noodle Girl.' Red Son thought happily to see her again. Whispers echo within Demon Bull King's mind, the image of MK distorting, replaced with the image of Monkey King. "Monkey King!? Come to take me? bind me? I will not let that simian triumph again!" He shouted in anger.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On their way to the mountain, the gang passed the construction site, screeching to a stop, before them stood the remains of a destroyed road, bent into a walkway, leading up towards bull shaped rubble.
"Alright, what's the plan?" Sandy asked turning towards the teen, everyone following the water spirits gaze.
"There's obviously going to be lots of clones waiting for us inside, so we have to go in as fast as possible without one of us getting captured or harm" MK said looking at the damage.
"Sounds great. Let's go!" Sandy shouted, grinning. "Yeah!" Mei cheered.
MK looked at them with a worried expression, "What? No, I didn't mean you guys too."
Tang chuckled. "You thought that you were going without us?" He questioned, making MK sheepishly nod.
Pigsy chuckled. "We get it. You're the Monkie Kid, eh? It's your job to go fight the bad guys." He told her.
Sandy put a hand on her shoulder smiling. "But we're your team, little lady. It's our job to get you there." The Water Demon reminded her, earning a smile from MK.
Pigsy steps on the gas pedal, charging at the base right as Mei used her sword to blast a hole through the front entrance, allowing the truck to drive straight through, landing on a built in road, hidden in the ditch that surrounded the base.
The sound of another engine roars behind them. Pigsy peered at the side view mirror to see bull clones driving up behind them. "We've got company!" He shouts looking back at the front, the bull clones swerve, hitting the truck and causing everyone to bounce out of their seats, Tang falling on Pigsy. But after a few quick maneuvers from the pig demon, he managed to loose the opposing truck.
MK looked around through the window and spotted something. "look there! DBK's throne room!" She calls out looking out the window.
"it's gotta be somewhere down...there!" The teen said, Tang screams in fear as the bull clones come closer, colliding their vehicles together, Sandy was quick to grab Mei, and MK and hopped out of the truck, the two teens clinging onto his back MK screamed while Mei laughed in excitement.
Sandy jumped into the air, punching the vehicle, smashing it into pieces Mei and Mk jumped off Sandy's back and ran towards the hole.
"Come on, MK! Let's go!" Mei called out and jumped into the hole with MK behind her not knowing how deep it was until they were falling.
Mei and MK latching onto each other as they screamed, Mei quickly took out her sword, stabbing it into the wall, stopping the two from falling just as MK latched onto Mei's waist. "Now what?" Mei asked looking at their predicament.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"They are coming for you," cold, ghostly whisper continues to echo in DBK's head. "The Power" The cold voice said.
Red Son smiled seeing this as a chance to prove himself, "Father, let me go up there and destroy those-"
But was cut off by Demon Bull King, who laughed, "You? Why would I trust you?!" Demon Bull King turned to his son. "You have brought me nothing but failure! Time and time again, nothing but disappointment!" Demon Bull King shouted. His harsh words strike deeply within Red Son, making his fists tighten and his lips quiver, fighting back his tears threatening to fall down his face.
Princess Iron Fan watched, anger rising before shock overtook her face. Her husband would never call their son a failure, this was not her husband at all.
"Traitor, He's a traitor! Kill him!" The voice screamed in his head.
"Traitor..?" DBK growled, eyes shining blue. "Yes, perhaps."
Red Son sputters, eyes filled with worry and slight fear. "What? N-no, father! I would never-"
"You thought you could deceive me?!" Demon bull king shouts, enraged and back hands the fire demon making Red Son hit the wall making the fire demon groan in pain. "Stand against me?!" Demon Bull King shouted raising his fist, Red Son couldn't help but flinch covering his face with his arms as Demon Bull King raised his fist until Princess Iron Fan ran in front of him to block it with her fan.
"Come to your senses! This power has clearly poisoned your mind!" She yelled at him. She then paused when she heard something whispers 'traitor'.
"Another traitor in my midst!" Demon Bull King yelled, snarling at the two. "I do not want to hurt you," Princess Iron Fan said and Demon Bull King laughed, "As if you could." He then lunged at her and the two started fighting.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"So, about getting down..." Mei laughed nervously. "Monkey King wouldn't have happened to...I don't know taught you his cloud trick by any chance?"
"Uh, that's still a work in progress," MK chuckled nervously, thinking back to the few times she tried summoning the Somersault Cloud, only to end up sneezing mini clouds.
"What are we gonna do?!" MK hissed, shaking to make things worse, someone's phone went off. The two stopped moving and froze, The ringing bounced off the walls, awakening the bull clones.
"Mei! Your phone, shut it off!" MK yelled at the dragon girl was quick to pull out her phone, but it fell from her grasp as she let go of the sword, trying to catch it. "Mei!" MK cried.
The teen screamed, letting go of Mei's waist and started swimming in the air towards the sword. MK quickly grabs it while grabbing Mei's ankle before she could fall They groaned and grunted MK sighed as Mei stopped the ringing.
“Seriously, at a time like this?” MK hissed.
Clones scuttled across the rock wall, their metal creaking and clanking, as they got closer to the two. "Yeah! Now's a great time to download the latest version of Monkey Mech-" Mei let out a gasp in realization.
"MK, you remember that cool mech you made, when we first fought DBK?" Mei said looking up at MK "Uh, yeah? But I don--" MK cut herself off with a gasp, as she realized where her bestie was going with this, and took out her staff in her spare hand.
"Give me hand Mei?" MK said. Mei nodded with a smirk, swinging both herself and the MK before launching them up into the air, allowing MK to slam the staff into the rock face, the earth crumbled upon impact, as golden light spewed out, the staff magically forming a Monkey Mech out of the loose earth, with the hero two inside.
Upon seeing the gigantic mech, the corrupted clones launched themselves at it, ready to tear the enemy bot apart, though a quick swing of the mech's staff, destroyed them, and giving MK enough time to make a plan.
"Alright, new plan, you hold off the zombie bull clones, I'll get down there and finish this" MK said looking down at the hole "Think you can handle this on your own?" MK asked with a smirk "I've always dreamed of piloting a blood thirsty mech!" Mei squeals with excitement but with a hint of bloodlust. The dragon girl begins pressing random buttons.
"On no, maybe putting Mei in charge of the mech isn't such a good idea—AAAAAAHH!!!' MK's thoughts were cut short when Mei pulled a leaver and the teen began falling straight down a hole as she was thrown out the mech, the teen screamed in fear and quickly whistled for her somersault cloud , the cloud flies down the hole and under MK slowing down the fall a little bit while Mei fought the hoard of zombie bull clones.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Princess Iron Fan grunts, landing on her feet and sliding back a good distance from her previous attack Red Son, however, was not so lucky, he tumbles backwards with a grunt, straining and hissing as he grips his hurt arm, Iron Fan wipes the blood from her lips, Demon Bull King laughs, stomping towards the two but stops, hearing shrieking All three look up to see MK on a cloud falling down towards them landing with a thud as she rolls on the ground, her cloud dissolving away from the impact.
"Noodle Girl?" Red Son yelled, surprised.
"The Little Thief," Demon Bull King's voice sneered another more sinister one, overlapping his.
The teen then put Red Son down before stretching her back, which gave a sickening crack, making Red Son winch at the sound as MK fell back, "Gimme' a minute..."
Demon Bull King then started growling in pain before looking at MK as she got back to his feet and did a couple of stretches that he'd learned from Wukong, Demon Bull King's vision split her into two turned into Sun Wukong.
As MK finished her stretches she turned to the possessed DBK, "Alright, I'm ready to fight now. Let's go!"
"Sun Wukong! Come to lock me away again?!" The Demon Bull's voice roared, making all of them turn to him in confusion. "I'll crush you where you stand!!"
MK blinked, then looked around to see if there was someone else there. "Uhm, I think you have the idea sir," MK said, leaning down to grab her staff. Whatever was going on with Demon Bull King and causing the whispers and delusions in his head.
Just then the earth shook, making MK look up just in time to see Demon Bull King charging at her. She yelped as she had to dodge several attacks from the raging bull, she finally got to put some distance between the two of them as Princess Iron Fan flung two blades of wind at the Demon, causing him to be trapped for a second.
When MK landed next to Princess Iron Fan she turned to her and asked, "So how do we free him?"
"Canisters on his back contain the ancient power that we needed the key to unlock. Its power has driven him mad," The Wind Demoness explained, motioning with her fan, to the blue tubes on Demon Bull King's back, who was currently breaking free from the rubble that'd trapped him.
"Okay then," MK said, uneasy before twirling the staff around, tensing up when Demon Bull King roared again, his roar shaking the cavern they were in. "Time for round two."
"No," Red Son told her, standing in front of her protectively. "This time, we fight with you."
The Fire Demon was determined to not let anything happen to his future girlfriend, flames surrounding his hands as he and his mother stood in front of MK.
"You'll only have one shot. Make it count." Princess Iron Fan tells her as she shoots forwards, letting out a cyclone of wind, which encompasses the snarling Demon Bull King, "You will all meet your fate together!!"
Both Demons were pushed back. Princess Iron Fan's fan had been chucked away somewhere in the room. The earth started to shake as Demon Bull King walked up to finish off his own family.
Demon Bull King lifts a claw to hit them, only to get hit in the head by a rock, everyone looking over at where MK stood smirking, another rock in his hand, "Yeah! I've got more rocks where that one came from!"
The Demon Bull King slams MK into the cave wall, his fist tightening around her body, snarling. "You have been an utter disappointment! I had hoped you would have learnt more of the Great Sage's little tricks!"
"I don't know what to tell you, man," MK shrugged, seemingly uncaring about her current dangerous situation, only panicking when Demon Bull King went to squash her with a thumb. "No wait!"
In a puff of golden smoke and hair, the now-revealed clone disappeared, angering the now-surprised Demon Bull King, "What?! A copy?!"
"Ha! turns out I actually did learn some of his tricks," MK called from above, making the large Demon look up in surprise as clones spawned. MK used several of them to spring herself further and faster, readying to hit him with the staff.
"Here...comes...Monkie Kid!" MK slammed down on Demon Bull King with her army of clones, managing to get a solid hit on the canisters and knocking them loose, causing them to crash and break on the stone flooring, releasing whatever was inside.
The ground shook, causing MK to yelp as she looked around. The Demon Bull King got up with a groan, looking around confused.
"What? W-What...happened?" He questioned, as Princess Iron Fan stopped her son from coming near him, just in case. Bull King looked at his wife and son, seeing their defensive looks, and frowned, concerned.
Princess Iron Fan went over to him, gently cupping his snout and placing her forehead against it. "You came back to me." That was all she said, resting against her husband as she wrapped the family in wind.
Red Son looked at MK, who looked back at him. "Thank you, and take care.." The Fire Demon told her, before disappearing with his family.
The mech stood at the edge of the battlefield, the group sitting on its shoulders, eating a bowl of noodles. "Well, ya did it, kid." Pigsy said as he ate his noodles.
"You beat DBK! again!" Sandy exclaimed.
"Thanks guys, but... I'm not sure I did." MK sighed, looking down at her noodles. "Whatever was powering him up, it made him...different, uncontrollable."
But we won, right?" Mei grinned, trying to lighten the mood. "I'm sure it's fine. You were done with this, hmm?" Tang asked, taking a piece of food from Pigsy.
"Hey! get your mitts off my bowl, Tang!" Pigsy yelled at Tang, making the group laugh.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
MK headed back to Flower Fruit Mountain to tell all about what happened today. "Monkey King! Macaque?" She called out to the simian husbands, looking around for them. "You'll never guess what...Happened?" She trailed off, She found them in front of their house, but...Something was wrong.
Very wrong.
Macaque held Monkey King in a comforting hug, while he was crying his eyes out. Rumble and Savage were by his side, also trying to comfort him.
"Monkey King? Macaque? W-What happened?" MK asked, with a worried look on her face. Macaque glanced over towards the girl, not saying anything.
"What wrong!? Did something happened!?" She asked again.
Macaque sighed, went over to MK, putting a hand on her shoulder. "MK...It's..It's Bai-He."
"Bai-He?" She looked around to see the little apprentice wasn't anywhere in sight. "What happened, where is she?" She yelled, really concerned.
"She's...She's gone, MK..." Was all he said.
MK gasped, covered her hand over her mouth. "W-What?"
"And Just when things got better, it got worse. Really...Really...Worse."
To be Continued.
Hi I LOVE your blog!!!
Idk if this is a personal question but I was curious as to why you decided to focus on Ming/Qing/early-mid 20th century fashion. Ik that specializing in specific periods instead of like, everything, is a more effective way of studying/researching stuff. I was just curious why you chose those specific periods to study! (Sorry for any bad english,,,)
Hi and thank you! No worries your English is fine. Um there are multiple reasons for this and my interest for each era developed one after another, sorry that this turned out pretty long.
When I discovered the hanfu community, I was only really interested in Ming Dynasty fashion and not anything else because I’ve only had previous exposure to Ming history. Maybe this is purely personal and I can’t pinpoint an exact reason why, but I was never interested in Chinese history prior to the Ming, like, at all. It’s not that I think it’s bad or boring or anything, it just doesn’t speak to me. This was extended to fashion history as well. To me at the time, Ming fashion looked visibly different to stereotypical expectations of historical Chinese dress fostered by period dramas and such, so I found it very refreshing (obviously the other eras also look nothing like stereotypical guzhuang, but to the untrained eye the Ming is just so wildly different it can’t be missed). I’m also generally a big fan of brocade fabrics and the drape of Ming clothes. At the time I was so obsessed with Ming style hanfu content because it looked so gorgeous and posh and not like anything historic Chinese I’ve seen before, it was novel and exciting.
I got into Republican era fashion a bit later. I forgot the exact reason why, but it was probably just me seeing those iconic 1930s advertisement posters with cheongsam wearing women and deciding to look into it further because why not, it’s connected to my existing interest. I’m generally more well versed with late 19th and early 20th century history since that’s most of what I learned in school and uni, so I had a bit more social context to work with. Also, primary sources like artworks, descriptions and physical artifacts are exponentially more abundant the more recent a time period is, and I realized Republican era fashion was a lot easier to research than Ming fashion, so I decided to focus on that for a while. I’m hooked to this era by the avant-garde designs that were inspired by modernist art, since I have a taste for “degenerate” and weird modern art in general, so that was right up my alley. Aside from that, I think 20th century fashion is especially relevant to understanding the state of Chinese fashion and its discourse today, since we’re inevitably more influenced by what transpired in the 20th century than anything prior to that. It’s like I get a better understanding of my place in the world by looking at this era.
Then I became really frustrated with the lack of English language information about Chinese historical fashion and started this blog. I was writing the series of posts on early 20th century fashion and decided to wrap it up at the 1950s and 60s since I wanted to include the iconic Hong Kong style cheongsam of the midcentury, but thought it wouldn’t be fair if I didn’t say anything about the mainland of the same time. I had a lot of deep seated misconceptions about fashion in the early PRC like everybody else, but the more research I did for the post the more I came to realize they were not true, and I had to reevaluate my perception of the period. I had so many existential crises writing that series (and in the subsequent maintenance of this blog, and I’m sure there are more to come) because putting every bit of knowledge I had at the time into a cohesive timeline exposed many structural and historiographical issues with discourses around Chinese fashion history i.e. the way it’s usually written, and I had to unpack them one by one. Watching movies from the midcentury that were not period dramas or propagandistic in nature was a really shocking experience for me, since they showed people in such gorgeous and nicely tailored clothes I did not expect to see in the Mao era. There were also many sophisticated designs from the midcentury that combined Chinese silhouettes and elements with contemporary Western tailoring (and I think 1950s Western tailoring is *chef’s kiss* perfection) which would definitely be popular nowadays as historical inspired street wear. It’s just so pretty and to contemporary taste. After reshuffling my worldview I developed an obsession with the 1950s as well.
My interest in the Qing came last, mostly because there are so many colonial and nationalist narratives around it and everybody seems to have a negative perception of it that it’s intimidating to start. At this point I had a vague idea about most fashion styles in the Ming and early 20th century, so now the problem for me became one of filling in the gaps. Like, yes I know what fashion at the end of the Ming looked like, I know what fashion at the beginning of the Republican era looked like, what about the stuff in between? So I begrudgingly started looking at Qing fashion, and after the most preliminary research I realized most information out there about Qing fashion is bullshit and incorrect. The 17th and 18th centuries are so poorly researched if researched at all (and not mislabeled as Ming), and Internet and scholarship alike are completely flooded with stereotypical 19th century dress and early 20th century Manchu fashion (which isn’t even in the Qing but that’s never stopped anybody). It sort of became a rush to unearth the truth.
A part of my interest in these time periods at this point is spite, like, I want to see bigoted narratives obliterated and people appreciating historical fashion without being coerced into feeling certain ways. It’s also highly rewarding after unlearning years of conditioning that gave me internalized racism by unpacking some of the narratives I came across in fashion history. It’s nice to finally be able to look at fashion in these eras without a white male colonizer voice telling me what to think in the back of my head…
No but if my father infused his soul into gems that got stolen and my grandfather was killed because of it and some ipstart princess stole it from the theirs because it was the price of her getting her Romeo and Juliet fantasy I would too do whatever I could to get prices of my father back. Nothing is more important to me than family, no matter how shitty my father may have been. If his soul was trapped in three gems that my beloved grandfather died for and some uppity princess who’s never experienced lost as I have said “yup this is mine because I stole it!!!” I woul too lose my damn mind.
I think this may be hard for non colonial people to understand but I have had many of my families legacy taken from me by the west and then refused to return it because of “finders keepers” and “it would be better for everyone if we kept it with us instead of with you”. My family heirlooms are in the British Museum as we speak. I have seen my great grandmothers HanFu on display without our consent because it was STOLEN from us. I cannot begin to express my discontent and my hatred for all that have touched one of the pieces she’s worn and made without our consent. To know that one of the biggest joys of your great grandmothers live is now on display for a bunch of westerners who do not know the significance of the embroidery on her dress is so distressing I have trouble going to sleep sometimes especially since I know that the companion piece is with us. But to have her put in part of her soul to that piece and be stolen? I cannot being to think how badly I would feel. I already feel uncontrollable levels of anger to the west whenever I think of what happened to my family but if I had an inkling that her spirit may not move on properly because her spirit lasts in a piece of her art? I would go to the ends of the world to make sure she has rest.
I can sympathize with the Faenorians, especially considering that they did not think that their brothers would be saved without competing this oath. If I had sworn the same I do not believe I would have done anything differently, especially concerning the fact that my ancestors sprit rests within the artifact that my brothers and I damned ourselves to.
Non colonized people, I do not think, would understand just how painful it is to be separated from your birthright and culture. To know that someone else holds in their hands something that belongs to your country and your culture but refuses to give it up because they’ve “earned it” and have “conquers rights” is devastating. To hear that two of the twelve zodiac signs would not be returning to us even if my government has agreed to pay whatever they want is devastating. My government has said, repeatedly, that they would pay whatever the buyers wanted to be able to put the twelve zodiac signs heads in their resting pace so they can be respected and worshiped as they should be, but each time, westerners refused. It’s devastating. I cannot imagine how it would feel to know that your fathers souls rested within one of these artifacts but one of the thieves would not give it up because “muh mom stole it so it’s ours!!!!”
Some school assignments!! So, here's some stuff I did for finals and midterms, all character design-related, I guess.
The first was for my western art review class in which we had to combine 3 paintings from different art movements and create a character inspired from them. I took heavy inspiration from "The Nightmare" by Henry Fuselli, combining it vaguely with "The Gleaners" by Jean-Francois Millet and "Intervention of the Sabine Women" by Jacques-Louis David. I did make a breakdown of these paintings and their characters I made from them but I won't share that for obvious reasons.
The second is Hanuman, or 'Anoman' in my culture, For my Eastern art Review midterms, I was to take any character from Indonesian Wayang and reimagine them in a completely different style- to which I chose Monster Roadtrip as the style isn't too far off from the one i have.
The last two are for my Eastern Art Review midterms in which I had to create a character inspired by two ancient artifacts. To which we chose japanese ceremonial bells and chinese wine vessels. The first design is alright, but seeing as a lot of people ended up going with a deity-inspired, hanfu-wearing design, I wanted to make my character stand out by making him the exact opposite. His clothes are inspired by the way the japanese ceremonial bells rust overtime, his skin taking inspo from the chinese wine vessels we used as reference. He carries around one of these vessels where a little fruit spirit resides. I decided to give him the name "Masake", a play on the name "Masaki" and the word "Sake" because we love a silly drunken uncle character.
[Hanfu · 漢服]Chinese Eastern Han Dynasty (25–220 A.D.) Hanfu-Civil Officials Based On Han Dynasty Relics
【History Note】
 In the Eastern Han Dynasty, officials were divided into civil officials(文官) and military officials (武官),and civil officials usually wore black robes and a cloth crown called "Jinxian Crown/進賢冠" on their heads.
The military officer (武官) is different from the civilian officer. They wear red robes and wear a crown call” Wubian DaGuan/Huben crown(武弁大冠 or 虎贲冠)”,These crown is characterized by always having two feathers on it
Refer to the picture below to distinguish between civil officials and military officials in the Eastern Han Dynasty
During the Three Kingdoms period(220–280 AD) in China (the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty), Zhuge Liang(諸葛亮), a well-known Chinese military engineer, strategist, statesman, and writer should wear the above civil official clothes when meet the emperor instead of wearing the clothes like below:
・↑The image of Zhuge Liang produced by a Japanese game company
----
The above image is the image of Zhuge Liang imagined by later generations combine with the actual costumes at the Song Dynasty(960–1279 AD) in China.
The Three Kingdoms game, including those made by the Japanese, is also based on the image of Zhuge Liang imagined and drawn by people after the Song Dynasty(960–1279 AD).
Which is not conform to the clothing that Zhuge Liang should have worn in  Three Kingdoms period(220–280 AD,the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty)
Space buns are very popular right now but they look like Odango hairstyle, but I heard that 牛角头 actually originated from China?? Are hairstyles an important part in the Hanfu movement.
Hi, thanks for the question, and sorry for taking ages to reply!
The double bun hairstyle you’re referring to has a long history in China, where it goes by several different names (depending on the specific style). It is most commonly know as Shuang Ya Ji/双丫髻 (lit. “double maiden bun”), so-called because it was mainly worn by girls & unmarried women. It was also worn by young boys, maids, and dancers. It is a hairstyle associated with youth. Niu Jiao Tou/牛角头 (lit. “ox horn head”) is a type of double bun hairstyle, but its shape is more angular and pointed. You can read more on the history and different types of double bun hairstyles here and here.
Below - Tang dynasty artifact depicting a maiden with a double bun hairstyle. Note the cute flower ornament on each bun! (x):
Tumblr media
The hairstyle is still commonly worn today, mainly by young girls for festive occasions. Below - young girls in hanfu with double bun hairstyles:
As for your second question - yes, hairstyles are definitely an important part of the hanfu revival movement! After all, you can’t revive hanfu without also reviving the hairstyles to wear with it. The hanfu movement isn’t only about reviving clothing - it also involves reviving hairstyles, makeup, accessories, art, customs, etiquette, etc. And out of all of these, I’d say hairstyles get the second most amount of attention after clothing.
Hope this helps!
Look I’m not going to dispute whether or not Han Chinese is the ethnicity with the highest global population percentage (because it could be true), but I sure as fuck want to drill it into everyone’s head that that statistic is without a doubt heavily inflated by Han nationalism. Which is the current Chinese government’s policy of imposing Han identity and culture on every citizen it possibly can.
Cultural genocide is de facto state policy, and at this point it’s almost impossible to know what percentage of “Han” Chinese people are actually ethnic minorities whose roots were erased. And just so you understand the scale of it, there are Han nationalists trying to claim Korean hanbok is actually just a derivative of hanfu, that the majority of Viet people are actually Chinese, and that Tibetan artifacts are actually Chinese artifacts. And the brainwashing runs deep, to the point I had American-born Chinese classmates say some of that shit to my face.
So no, straight cis white men aren’t the Global Default Human by any stretch of the imagination, but—*gestures vaguely at the aforementioned Han nationalism*—that shit rubs me the wrong way just as much.
Shifting through the artifact cave after finally being allowed. She’d felt a burning agitation at being held back from doing one of her main duties. She had to grow familiarized with the artifacts if she was to preserve them and keep them organized. A heavy task before her.  Especially with how much it has become. She can feel the bead of sweat roll down the side of her face, the iconic eye twitch before she slips her cheongsam on, abandoning her normal hanfu outfits in favor of something more simple. Moving through the area is a bit difficult but she manages to get started with setting up area’s. Taking the large artifacts first and setting them in a manner that’s more fitting. Cleaning them is a bit of a harder task. A heavy sigh as she shakes her claws a bit after managing the time consuming task. And she’s only partway through! Can you believe it!? She begins working with the smaller objects. She finds that some act like jewelry, perhaps to be worn? Surely though that was easier to put away in smaller boxes. Getting the labels carved into the edges of the boxes is harder. As if making the small stands for the moment. She won’t deny that from the entrance is harder to see all the progress she’s been making. Though walking past that large mountain of items she’d yet to sort through one could see the gentle care poured into the room, segments that have been cleaned and look pristine. Balanced on one of the step stools to help her get to higher segments. She squeaks when the mountain shakes. Struggling for equilibrium she falls down, hitting one of the boxes on her way down as her claws grasp for anything to not fall down. Grumbling as she gets her footing barely so she doesn’t fall flat on her face, tail swinging for equilibrium. She notes that one artifact has begun glowing. Maybe the mountain shake (probably caused by Her King and His Successor training) had caused it to activate? The rest scattered around begin to faintly chime in response. “....Oh.”
A shock wave invisible to the naked eye. Pure magic ripples over the area as the artifacts stop glowing. A snow white figure drops into the scattered artifacts. As if she’d slipped. An awkward angle as she lays against one of the smaller piles of the artifacts she’d yet to get organized. Markings faintly glowing as her magic swirls at the edges of her vision. The world turns black and her body goes limp. Head tilting back as pale violet eyes close. Well this would be a sight for whoever found her passed out in the artifact cave.
Coucou ! :D Pour les questions des mariages, si ça ne te gêne pas, la question 9 ou 18 ou 21 au choix (ne te force pas à faire les 3, surtout pour la 9 qui doit prendre pas mal de temps ^^') pour n'importe quel couple que tu aimes bien ! :D Merci beaucoup d'avance !
Salut et merci beaucoup :) Du coup j'ai fait les 3 parce que pourquoi pas (et avec des digressions un peu partout) ! J'ai laissé les dieux décider de chacun des couples !
9) Show us a mood/stimboard of their wedding's general aesthetic...
Pour Gladys et Dimitri (le mariage royal, hohoho !) TADAM !
Tumblr media
(Bon j'ai tordu un peu la consigne donc c'est autant un moodboard sur leur relation que sur l'esthétique de leur mariage. On ne le dit jamais assez, l'image du milieu a été dessinée par la talentueuse Yzderia.)
18) Did anyone oppose the marriage? Did they speak then, or did they just forever hold their peace?
...Pour Felix et Vigdis.
Comme a dit une personne très sage : "haters gonna hate". Il y a forcément des gens qui ont trouvé de quoi critiquer ce mariage, que ce soit à cause des origines de Vigdis ou pour n'importe qu'elle autre raison triviale.
Mais comme ça reste le mariage du duc et que Vigdis est une héroïne de guerre qui a des connexions importantes, personne n'aurait osé l'ouvrir pendant la cérémonie.
De toute manière, Philippe a bien vérifié la liste des invités avant histoire d'enlever ceux qui pourraient poser problèmes vu qu'il veut que son neveux passe le meilleur moment possible.
Par contre c'est évident que Sylvain est allé voir Felix avant la cérémonie pour l'asticoter et lui ressortir un truc edgy sur la romance et le mariage que Felix a dû dire à l'Académie. (Loog approuve tout à fait ceci mais attention au karma, Sylvain. Felix ne va pas te manquer).
(Après reste la question triviale de savoir si Vigdis a finalement mis une robe pour son mariage. Mais vu qu'elle dit à Gladys dans un des chapitres qu'elle "mettra une robe au moment où Gladys s'y attendra le moins", sans doute pas).
Au final, ça reste donc une cérémonie qui se déroule très bien !
21) Do they have a honeymoon? Where to? How soon after?
...Pour Loog et Maude !
Vu que le mariage se passe juste un peu avant le début de la guerre, pas vraiment, non. Et d'ailleurs, Loog culpabilise de n'avoir que ça à lui offrir, même s'il est profondément heureux et ému qu'elle reste avec lui malgré ce qui se profile. C'est pour ça qu'il se promet de se rattraper dès qu'il le pourra et de traiter sa dame comme elle le mérite.
La cérémonie est aussi festive que possible. Ils veillent bien à ce qu'il n'y ait aucune décoration blanche, vu que c'est la couleur du deuil en Dagda, pour ne pas rappeler de mauvais souvenirs à Maude. Du coup ils sont soit tous les deux habillés en bleu, soit elle en vert et lui en bleu. Maude a une fleur dessinée sur le front, ce qui est un maquillage traditionnel de chez elle. C'est quelque chose qu'elle fait toujours tant que c'est possible.
Un peu comme ici :
D'ailleurs, si tu veux voir des tenues de la période dont je m'inspire pour les vêtements dagdaniens, je te conseille vraiment ce tumblr. Il y a de très beau vêtements et de très jolies reconstitutions :
Mais cela dit, cela ne les gêne pas non plus parce que Loog et Maude sont heureux juste en étant ensemble. Un chroniqueur de l'église qui les a rencontrés lors des fameuses négociations note qu'ils s'apportaient beaucoup de joie l'un à l'autre.
Du coup la "lune de miel" c'est plutôt après, lorsqu'ils peuvent prendre plus de temps pour eux. Lorsque leurs responsabilités les amènent à se déplacer, ils en profitent pour visiter Faerghus. Ils finissent par avoir de nouveau le temps d'apprécier la paix.
Happy Halloween! 🎃 No new costume this year because it’s been a bit of a rough time but I wanted to share one of my favorite shots from my hanfu Cinderella 叶限 shoot with @allisonthephotographer, wherein I give our prince a passable excuse for not being able to recognize his mystery maiden from the ball. In keeping with my anachronistic/modern hanfu, 面纱 veils were not historically worn but are a stylistic artifact of modern historical dramas derived from Chinese full face veils. During this pandemic, it seemed extra appropriate to incorporate a face covering, as I had originally intended to wear this out with my mask beneath the veil. https://www.instagram.com/p/CkYdOFHMjtg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
