finished watching netflix atla! i think the hate is unjustified lol like all that hate seems a little too intense for what i think the show missed. it didn't hit all the same notes as the original show, yeah, so i'm not sure it quite succeeds as an adaptation, but as a standalone show it's pretty good. and i might have some gripes with the characterization, but there was love in the casting and in the costumes and the world, and that goes a long way for me.

maybe this is a hot take but i think there's a difference between having empathy for a character or feeling protectiveness over them and straight up infantilising the character in question, and i unfortunately see the latter quite a lot

Me finishing S2 of Alice in Borderland: Wow!!! God, what an emotional gut-punch. The Land wasn’t some sci-fi virtual reality or any of the other cliches Mira was peddling, but rather a limbo where the games represent the characters fighting for their lives in the real world. And sure, an afterlife-esque explanation isn’t the most original, but often the most common endings are common for a reason. And this one fits perfectly. Rather than a cop-out “They were already dead from the start,” I interpret the games as being their actual deaths and those who had the will to live (alongside some inevitable luck and, as Karube points out, help from others) end up pulling through in the real world too, rather than the real world dictating what happens in the games. Which means everything we witnessed still keeps its emotional significance. We get that perfect, happy ending without erasing their hardships because the hardships are what got them that ending. It turns out they were really playing the games for the same reason they always have: to survive. And everything else seems to near perfectly line up with our explanation. We know now why some characters hung on despite numerous, horrific injuries and others perished from comparatively minor stuff. It’s not just a suspension of disbelief on the audience’s part, but an in-world representation of who is fighting the hardest to come back from the brink. If the Land is a limbo--one seemingly created for this specific tragedy--we know now why people are arriving at different times (their hearts aren’t all stopping simultaneously), and the limbo decays as fewer victims of the strike arrive and more make their choice, slowly eroding as it nears the point when no one else will need it. We see those who choose to test future “players” before inevitably passing on themselves. We see how even though Anne “dies,” Kuina deciding that they’ll go back together gives her the strength to pull through her surgery. We know now how they’ll meet again and become friends! That’s also just an awesome example of how you can kill a trans characters for the “realism” (everyone in that fight came out the worse for it) without actually removing her from the narrative/denying her a happy ending. We understand what the woman meant about those not being fireworks. We have a resolution that actually allows the survivors to return home in a way that makes sense (seriously, if people just popped back into the real world having remembered the games, wouldn’t they be talking about it?) while still keeping the core of what they learned. None of them need to remember the exact events because they’ve maintained both their newfound hope and just enough residual connection to recognize one enough and re-establish those bonds--perhaps an explanation for what we’d otherwise call “fate” or “soulmates.” They played the game of life and they won. They get to live! All they wanted was to do extraordinarily normal things together and now they can!! Walking out that door and the cards blowing away is the perfect endi--

I really don't wanna dislike him but between fandom's tendency to forget the bad stuff he did but also seeing people ONLY talk about the bad stuff he did and basically never bring up the good aspects of his character and seeming to resent him I'm worried that's rubbing off on me and like. I don't dislike him but liking him is getting a lot harder these days and it's genuinely upsetting to me

Yes, I am aware! I remember finding that interesting when reading about on Bulbapedia when trying to understand the Go-verse. Not sure if they would expand on it or not in pokemon Go, but it's certainly an interesting backstory.

I will admit, I was pretty disappointed with Cliff's personality. Before really reading into his quotes, I got the impression that he was the "I don't want to hurt you, but I'm loyal to team rocket so I'm gonna" and I thought that would be interesting cause I don't think we've gotten that type of team rocket member before? The only one that I remember is that random npc that battles you in radio tower I think that basically goes " what? A kid?! I don't want to hurt a kid, but I if I must....". Like that underlining kindness( kinda) despite doing something very wrong. But then I read Cliff's quotes and was proven wrong lol. He's just a Giovanni simp/j. In hindsight, I should have just expected that, and my disappointment is kinda silly all things considered. I got my hopes up based on nothing lol.

Anyway, I know Cliff's loyalty towards Team Rocket is due to them saving him in the past. It's really interesting and I hope that they expand on it more!

Fuck there are so many things but, uh....

I guess the one thing I would change about the world is make it so that being unemployed isn't essentially a death sentence anymore, anywhere. That you could still have a basic standard of living and just vibe even if you're not employed.

One of my favorite comics is Spaceshipping by Alex Steacy (if you like goofy slice-of-life sci fi, and you're at least ok with porn, I highly recommend it). And I think I recall him describing his world's "boring utopia" as "the worst you could ever do is a small apartment with basic appliances, food, and free healthcare." Or something to that effect, I should try and find the actual quote.

But yeah, as someone who has been unemployed for about eight months now due to factors outside of my control (believe me, I've been working my ass off trying to find employment) this is something I'd love to just wake up one day and see.
