Then in the future they would be more comfortable to switch (and the bicker about who should be the big or small)

Welcome to the One Piece Ship War - crack edition!

What is a crack ship?

A crack ship is a (in this case romantic/sexual) ship that has little to no basis in canon.

When will my ship qualify for this tournament?

They will automatically qualify (after having been submitted) when:

The characters involved have NO canon interaction*, and are not part of the same crew (no matter how popular the ship is).

The characters involved have 1 short canon interaction and less than 10 fics for them on AO3 (as a side pairing counts too)

They might qualify if:**

They have no canon interaction but are part of the same crew or organisation.

They have 1 short canon interaction but more than 10 fics on AO3

They have 1 long canon interactions or 2/3 short ones and less than 10 fics on AO3

They have multiple canon interactions but NO fics on AO3

It's an incredibly funny ship (but you gotta convince me it's crack!)

These ships will not qualify on principal:

ANY ship between Strawhats (honorary Strawhats don't count if they haven't met a certain Strawhat - examples: BrookNami does not qualify, SanjiVivi does not qualify, but BrookVivi would qualify)

The top 25 ships (or something, be sensible) on AO3.

*canon interactions include fillers, cover stories, specials, and movies (though I haven't seen the last 2 yet and I don't remember much of the other ones, so these might slip through, but I'm counting on you to honor this rule). Also, I won't know nor check interactions in the manga (that haven't been animated yet), so something might slip through there as well. Just honor the rules, please.

**Any ships in the 'might qualify' category will be judged on crackyness by me first, and when I'm in doubt, I will put them up for a vote - so expect a few polls for this.

All characters must be from One Piece (no OCs).

Must be a crack ship according to above guidelines.

Ships that were in the previous shipping war tournament are allowed in this one too, as long as they follow the previous rule.

No moral limitations. These are fictional characters, not real people. Go wild. (But be prepared for 'problematic' ships to be voted out in round 1 or 2.) I will not start discourse/moral discussions about any ships! (messages about morally questionable ship are likely to be ignored and deleted)

Poly ships are allowed! I will cap them at 5 characters, however, and at least 1 character should follow the interaction rules stated above. (examples: JinbeRobinBrook or KidLawLu are not allowed. RobinNamiKiller would be allowed, on grounds of Killer having no interactions with the other 2 (I think? 😂)) Again, be sensible here.

All characters involved have to be humanoid. No concepts, objects, or full animals (fishmen/merfolk, minks, and Chopper are allowed).

You can submit multiple ships, but use a new form for each ship.

Do not hate on other ships, just support your own.

You are allowed and encouraged to submit fanart! As a lot of these ship won't have official art with all characters in it, it will come down to fanart for the most of it ((bad) edits are also very much allowed). However, it needs to be your own or you need permission from the artist before submitting it! However, if you haven't gotten permission yet when submitting, you can always send me a link to the fanart later. Without picture submitted, there might be a chance your ship will have to compete without a picture.

Thoughts on the official translation of 405?

Yeah, thoughts abound.

1. Is the official translation of the final line in chapter 405 accurate? No.

2. Regardless, some people think it's inaccurate in really blatant ways that it actually is not. For example, some people think the official translation is changing some explicitly used pronouns around. If there's EVER anything about Japanese that isn't completely clear, it's what the pronouns should be--because the vast majority of them are implied.

3. Re: the "yeah yeah" line, I can conceive of a delivery of the line that does not sound disrespectful. That doesn't mean that's how the translator meant it, and this translator does have a habit of translating Katsuki's rude language with a certain *VIBE* that I don't always agree with--but that doesn't change the fact that Katsuki does speak very rudely and the translator clearly tries to capture that in the way they seem to think is best.

4. It's quite a leap to claim that this official translation is inaccurate due to deliberate malice, which I see a lot of people doing. From what I can tell, the translator just didn't realize the final line is a callback to chapter 322. Without that context, yeah, I can see how it'd be difficult to fully understand what's being said there, because enough of the words are vague or implied that it'd be confusing what Katsuki's talking about without that realization. Katsuki doesn't say "I (ore)" in the line, he says "kocchi (this/here)," which depending on the context can mean "I, we, us over here on this side (of the line, of the argument)." He also doesn't say "Izuku/Deku/that nerd" specifically, he says "aitsu (that guy over there)" with the kanji reading as "One For All." Without the context of chapter 322, it could easily read like "we'll wipe the floor with you where those One For All guys couldn't."

5. Building off #4, we need to be a little more self-aware as fans. When you are a big fan of something, you're gonna be more likely to remember specific lines and notice callbacks and be keyed into the little details. First of all, not everyone is capable of that, especially with respect to a long 405-chapter-and-counting manga. This line is referencing something that the translator hasn't necessarily seen in over two years. Should the translator have to comb back through the entire manga every week just to be safe? Is that really feasible? Of course I'd love for the official translation to be as accurate as possible, but when you're translating something on a weekly basis that isn't even finished yet, it's just a fact that there will be times you miss things. You don't always have the luxury of time to go back and check for things you've missed that need to be tied together. I've messed up lines in my translations before too. Please keep in mind this is the translator's JOB, not necessarily their PASSION. They're likely translating multiple projects at the same time for a meager paycheck. They've got a lot of stuff to remember from various projects at the same time, and they're gonna miss stuff on occasion. Did the translator "not care" in this case? I think it's far more likely the translator cares enough, but if they're not in the fandom they're not gonna care more than the fans nor should we expect them to.

The proper response is NOT TO ATTACK THE TRANSLATOR'S LIVELIHOOD like I see MANY people doing, holy crap.

Translating is often a thankless job. No one writes Viz telling them how good of a job the translator is doing when they get 99% of the translations right. The most obsessive fans often jump on mistakes as if those mistakes are personal attacks. But we're complaining about 1 or 2 lines out of the whole chapter. The rest was pretty good. That's the case for most chapters. It's hard to justify claiming malice when the translator far more often than not gets it right. But goodness, attacking the translator is not going to endear you to anyone who matters. If the translation is something you truly care about and you want to foster nontoxic fandom spaces and have good relationships between the fandom and the producers, a more proper response would be something like:

"Hey Viz, I think the translator missed this key bit of context which could have helped him with this line's translation. I love Horikoshi's work and want the best for it, and I think the translator cares about doing a good job. Would you please let the translator know about this and have him look into it for the official print tankoban release in English?"

The more you alienate and dogpile the translator, the less they're gonna care about doing a good job.

There are some posts I've seen floating around that at the start Dazai may not of known that Chuuya wasn't a vampire which I kind of agree with. I'm at work currently so I cant double check but when he goes "that's a nasty trick you've pulled fydor" im pretty sure its in his thoughts?? To which why would he think that if he knew the whole time. I think dazai must of caught onto the fact Chuuya was faking it at somepoint but not sure when that would of been. Also at the end of the ep Dazai said he didn't have a plan. (I did watch the episode at just after 2am my time when it came out and then fell asleep afterwards so my memory could be not correct). I do think chuuya not being a vampire at all is a little disappointing tbh but this idea softens the blow. Would like to know your thoughts on this idea if you are open to sharing?

I'm in that category too, yes. I've left a few tags saying basically the same thing on some posts.

First, there are a few things the anime didn't answer (more than failing to justify Chuuya faking it since the start, there's Sigma's case about needing to help the ADA, which... didn't happen at all) so either we haven't seen the repercussions of this arc yet, or we got the shortened version of what the manga will offer. Which could work either way. (not ideal necessarily, but besides huffing what can we do huh)

Dazai not knowing though! Dazai did admit to his "plan" being to mostly adapt on the fly and trust his allies to help him back. He implied this prison break was one big trust fall. But that's how I've always interpreted Dazai's way of planning! I even made a post about it a full year ago!

Since Dazai knows Chuuya slowed down the elevator (which I can accept, Dazai's ability shouldn't affect random objects he touches, and Fyodor had told Chuuya through a comm to go finish off Dazai because he wasn't in the room), I assume that by then he was aware. Maybe not before though. Definitely not at first. Because this?

I refuse to believe was entirely scripted. Why is he acting? For Sigma? For corpses? I'm of the opinion that no matter what is going on through Dazai's head, his expressions are always genuine (ex: he might react with surprise at something he completely expected, if only because of how sudden it was, or when/how it ended up happening. Here? genuine distress.)

And I extend that feeling to Dazai having an emotional moment, complete with flashbacks, while "drowning" Fyodor and Chuuya. He did say he wasn't expecting to kill them that way, but perhaps it really was a moment of weakness triggered by concern or guilt.

I can accept Dazai having caught on during his face-off with Chuuya. That's Mr I-know-your-breathing-patterns we have here, so if they didn't high-five after the elevator crash-landing (still broke Dazai's leg), I would say Dazai knows physics enough to go "hold on" and connect the dots. So yes, that baiting of Chuuya, the light taunting, the bratty attitude he only really has with Chuuya, the angry YELLING and insults when Chuuya shot him in the shoulder? The destiny talk? Yeah I can re-contextualize those as Dazai over-acting his part. And then not being able to shut up after being shot in the head.

Maybe there's some reaching here, maybe this will not be totally accurate to the source material. But Asagiri does have a habit to write scenes from an outsider pov while knowing whats happening in the characters' heads and behind the scene, but then not give us that input directly. Never before today was it confirmed that Dazai improvises a lot in his plans. And yet! That's something I've believed in for a very long time.

This all could very well be covering Asagiri's poor decisions, but between this being the adaptation and bsd being an unfinished story, I have a hard time deciding at the moment how much of a poor decision this was. Maybe it's worth a raised eyebrow. Maybe it deserves some criticism in hope the author takes notes. Maybe this was an anime-original resolution due to time constraints (think of the Fifteen final fight). I can only raise concerns for now, and wait.

Onto volume 3!

The looks vash and ww share at the end last volume and now. Ww’s first though is that vash knows what s up and also is a bastard. Which yeah, but also I think vash look says clearly “I know I can trust you with this”. despite the ordeal with rai-dei that clearly still affects them – especially Wolfwood – vash seems certain on where Wolfwood stands in that fight. I mena, after his immediate reaction to leonofs play…

I love seeing Wolfwood fight. No words to eloquently describe it but damn

I think it’s very interesting how many people (including ww) that fight vash see the pain, the anger, the emptiness and all in his eyes. And they are not WRONG but at the same time no one seems to realize that despite this all, vash still is full of genuine love and hope as well. with vash that is not mutually exclusive.

They never say it but c’mon, its clear vash has AT LEAST a general idea what wolfwoods deal is or at the very least that has ulterior motives and is not just tagging with vash for the fun of it. At the same time, literally none of the gung ho guns has even a silver of trust in ww loyalty. Which, fair enough. I don’t think ww has much of a set loyalty at that point beyond  trying not to die and keeping the orphanage as save as he can.

Okay, look, vash is getting through a lot, all the time. And I know there is worse to come, yet what leonof does to vash with the puppets looking like the people from home attacking him and just…. Everything about that is a special case of fucking evil man.

There is something objectively really funny about meryl and milly in this. like, they just so happened to find Jessica, get back to the hidden city vash calls home, accidentally save Wolfwood and then just.. decide, jup we gotta help nurse that one. like they have so little context for the whole mess, for this hidden city, anything really. Hell, they barely have context for Wolfwood! They literally just met him briefly on the bus ride after he nearly dried up in the desert… then they saw him two years later with vash during the whole assassin insurance agent thing but it’s not like they said anything to him then. Even funnier from the point of view of the people there. “you know that guy?” – “sorta. He’s a priest we met once when he was stranded in the desert like two years ago. Come to think of it, last we saw him he was with vash”

not to mention how do they know vash? well they are working for an insurance company investigating all the property damage vash causes

Home took quite the hit and oh man vash feels so guilty about it all but luida makes it clear he is family and if anything, he and Wolfwood saved them. And judging by the other peoples reaction or lack of disagreement, they see it like that too. Like vash feels he needs to do it all alone and there are many people out there that hurt him but there are also the people that love him so, so much

Oh Wolfwood. Whatever he’s dreaming, it has him sniffle… but as soon as he wakes up he’s like, wtf and ouch, then the next thing he does is argue with vash. in like the span of two pages

so, vash thanking Wolfwood who immediately points out that he killed. To which Vash acknowledges that is true but also that Wolfwood spilling blood did save a lot of people. That is what I meant in my last post about ‘vash being too caught up in his own way of living’ and his personal moral code. What happened at home doesn’t make vash change his own actions or believes but I think he realized in that moment that he wasn’t fair to Wolfwood before. It was a bit of a reality check id say. He accused Wolfwood of being a coward and giving up easily, but it’s not at all about taking the easy way out for Wolfwood. Its him doing what he can and NEEEDS to in order to keep himself and other save. vash may not agree with it but he’s starting to understand Wolfwood better. I think vash is so used to do things on his own and not having companions for any extended periods of time that it can be easy to forget that what applies for you will not applies for others or be feasible. Or the only right thing to do.

See, we know knives sent Wolfwood to be vash’s guid or whatever you wanna call it. So it’s kind of easy to forget (and I haven’t quite realized the degree of it before reading trimax) how little Wolfwood actually knows. I mean, he did impersonate chapel so… right until he met vash ans knives in jeneora rock, Wolfwood clearly had no idea what these two were capable off. And he has realized vash isn’t your regular human but I think only after seeing the picture with Jessica does he realize truly just how far away from human vash is. Like, some of the gung ho guns, even ww, push whats normal human too but vash is another level.

The conversation with ww and luida. It gives us some insight on vash. but its also kinda funny because it basically boils down to:

WW: what the fuck is he and what the hell is his deal?

Luida: well, hes not really human but he’s not trying to set himself apart much. Been around for a really long time, most of which is actually really horrible for him. But he’s just out there, trying to help where he can, being kind, just an overall nice guy don’tcha think?

I’m not actually sure how much luida really knows about vash. she sure knows about knives and I think july and stuff too aand obviously how he doesn’t really age and all. But I’m not sure she knows about the fall or vash as an independent plant specifically. But I don’t think it even matters in that scene. Because what she says is yes, vash is not a normal human but she puts all the focus on what kind of PERSON he is above everything else.

Which I think is especially perfect with Wolfwood, who at that point is still very much struggling to understand vash beyond the rumors, the destruction and his unnatural… everything. Mostly because vash as a person isn’t making much sense to ww currently (its ok ww vash is a complicated guy)

Another example is how interesting Jogo is but nobody care about him because they don't want to fuck him. Like his last fight with Sukuna? The fact that he's the first person Sukuna ever praised for being strong in the story? A "stand proud. You are strong." Like? When I game to this moment I was zo shocked because it's not expected on Sukuna at all. And how Jogo mourned the death of Hanami and Dagon too?!

It really does suck that when it comes to liking a character some people just stop at their appearance and that's it. Nothing else intrigues them and they go as far as to misinterpret them -> leading into misinterpreting the story and having terrible ass cold takes that just feels like they need something to say to make them sound "logical".

And it's people like that who are the loudest. So when others want to engage in the story and they check out meta posts and reviews for it, they'll see that trash first and run with it.

When JJK first came out, I did see it was quite popular but at most I saw fanart for it and kind of just ignored everything else. I went ahead with watching the anime and then went to see what people were saying and honestly? What the hell?

Gojo is a character that has a bad case of "likeable character, unlikeable fans".

I truly do believe that some of his fans only take to him for being attractive and powerful. When it comes to his story? "Eh, what's that?"

Look, I'm all for finding characters attractive. I, myself, find some characters attractive. But I don't see the thrill of stopping there when that character also has a whole story you can explore.

I know Gojo fans are mad, but... his pretty ass is in a story that is meant to be written tragically. People will say "he should be the MC, that's my MC". Well, guess what? He's part of the main cast, so his ass is getting that full experience.

I like Gojo a lot, too, I do. But watching the first season, something deep in my soul told me "oh, he's a sad one", so I guess a part of me was already prepared for something like 236.

This is going to sound harsh, but when he said "I would win" way back in the beginning? I clocked in that he, in fact, wouldn't. That fight against Sukuna was going to be a lost battle. Oh, I believed in Gojo and I wanted him to win. But whenever a nearly, seemingly invincible character say they are going to win... most likely they're going to lose.

And again, it's JJK. There's going to be loses and agony. It also doesn't matter sense for Gojo to win when YUJI STILL EXISTS!!! Like, sometimes, I feel like some of the fandom just wants Gojo to take the frontlines just so Yuji can't do anything.

I didn't expect for him to die, no. Still hurts. But... come on... the manga wasn't ending that soon.

The fanon interpretations I see of him (Gojo) is just... if you asked me to pick one I hate the most it is the "Gojo is a womanizer/playboy" interpretation. Same case for Sukuna, I do not see it. Especially, when in canon this guy just does not care for all of that. But it's fanon stuff and since I don't like it, I just steer clear of it.

And good point about Jogo. I'll be honest, I find that the Disaster Curses were interesting antagonists of the beginning of JJK. They were the first real threats for our cast. They were challenges.

They were curses made from humanity's fear of disasters and other humans. And yet, even with being curses, they showed "human" qualities. They were able to talk, a rare case for curse spirits, and feel other emotions. Mahito often displayed joy, example. Dagon and Jogo displayed sadness. They were a group that did hold some care for each other.

And yeah, I would say because of their physical appearances they're often ignored. (Unimportant, but I actually loved Hanami's design, that's my favorite design right there.)

It’s highly possible they’re going to push contrasting narratives. Unfortunately. Though I don't see the point in forcing any of these ideas into a movie, because there's simply no time. It will have no meaning either way unless 'romance' is going to play a significant part in it... which also wouldn't make any sense.

It's a lose-lose for all of us no matter what you ship...

However, they’ve always done it with filler (everything aside the source material and... arguably Kishimoto's add-on's) as well as marketing material. Some is still subtle enough so people can argue about it, but argue they will. (Ah! Isn’t that so very clever?) It isn't for nothing they used to force Naruto on Sakura aggressively and love to make him look like an idiot in filler, or introduce random girl characters as part of a new movie-plot so he can not only be the Hero to save the day, no, he can be their personal Hero. Because, oh, isn’t he actually so handsome now that he saved me? It’s a lame way to check off the romantic elements they for some reason always need to add in and give to Naruto, disguising it under the excuse of “character-arc-stuff” because Naruto can't evolve even a single belief unless the girlies’ minds change about him first. Let alone narratively it destroys Naruto’s character, because a huge "problem" is that he’s people-pleasing his way to being liked and pretty much all filler I’ve come across only strengthens this flaw (I saw ‘flaw’ lovingly btw). Name a single thing that faithfully stayed true to the Manga and wasn’t made by Kishimoto:…

… right. 

Imo, best case scenario? They just leave out everything beneath the surface, pick a single Theme, focus on the Shinobi in a way that still allows for a bit of believable growth in these characters. Something that can still show the current while pushing for some realization and round it out somewhat satisfactory in the end. If they’re going to try anything beyond that, it’ll fail.

Kishimoto created art, but the sole decision for an adaptation means art is now ground through a giant meat-mill of great team-effort and commerce. Every medium functions differently and this decision alone comes with many problems. (Length ’s an important one. Structure too.) You can already see it in the interviews that are held about this project. Too many people are involved that have influential say about the outcome of the creative decisions. There’s also the lovely men in suits that have all the control and yet have zero creative-skill although they’d like to believe otherwise. Studio’s by itself have their own politics. This never bides well for adaptations. Very rarely is it acceptable. Very often it’s disappointing. Almost always it’s a high-budget fantasy. And yet they always know that fans are going to be critical and still not care. 

Stubborn as hell. 

(It’s different when it’s not really an adaptation, but more inspired by an existing story. HTTYD for example is very, very loosely based on a book-series— it has little connection, but there’s obviously still a story idea in there… )

You changed his cloth while he slept, being careful as to not wake him. You watched his chest rise and fall at a normal pace. You carefully checked his vitals, making sure he was doing better. His heartbeat seemed to have calmed since earlier now that he was resting.

All of the S4 could tell how worried you were for Rider.  Army continued to ask if you needed any help, but there “wasn’t much that could be done,” you’d sigh. 

He stayed in bed, continuously pushing you away for the following week. You slept on the couch to avoid disturbing the rest of the S4- not that you’d get much sleep at all. 

It only hurt Rider even more to see you slowly become more drained by taking care of him. He just wanted to tell you to stop hurting yourself for him. Those injuries that are slowly healing- they’ll leave scars. They’re all his fault. 

He now had a headache as you walked in. He attempted to speak again, his voice extremely raspy- so much so that what he said made no sense. He flopped onto his pillow in frustration as you sat down beside him and offered him something to soothe his throat.

After taking the honey-flavored throat lozenge, he attempted to speak once again. It came out rough, but somewhat comprehensible. You tried to urge him not to speak, but cut yourself off to hear him out.

“Stop… taking care of me.”

He was thrown into a coughing fit as you rested your hand on his back to soothe him when he shot you a glare. And then the words settled in. 

..What?

 He noted your confusion so he tried speaking again, but nothing. He turned around, facing away from you and snuggling into his blankets.

You left the room shortly after, obeying his wish. You sat at the kitchen table all alone until Aloha joined you.

“Wha’s wrong, Doll?”

“I don’t- I don’t understand.”

He stayed silent, placing his chin in his hand.

“He doesn’t want me around. He doesn’t want me to help him. I don’t… get it.”

“He’s- hm… Yeah actually that makes no sense to me either.” He shrugged lightheartedly. He ruffles your tentacles after standing up, asking if you wanted a snack. 

“Needa take care o’ yerself, darl.”

You agreed to have whatever he was having, which ended up being some canned peaches. You couldn’t help but wonder if Rider was hungry. But now you were conflicted- do you go ask? Or leave it be?-

There he stood in the doorway, leaning against it for a moment. You abruptly stood up to go over to Rider to allow him to lean on you, but he simply shook his head. You sat back down silently. He stumbled over to the table, eyeing your bowl of peaches. You pushed it towards him, simply saying that you were full. He knew this wasn’t the case- but you were doing your best to care for him in a subtle way. He couldn’t help but sigh. 

He attempted to speak again after eating a slice of peach.

“Stop…hurting yerself for me.” 

 He eyed the newly forming scars littered across your face and hands.

Your jaw fell a bit, eyes widening before looking at him with the sweetest, calmest, worried look. You shook your head.

“That’s all? I think I can make that decision on my own, Hun.”

He had you worried all week for nothing.

“Yer tired,” he took note of the bags forming under your eyes.

“I’m fine with it. As long as I help you get better,” you smiled softly at him.

…There was nothing he could do about it, huh. 

“Jus’... focus on yerself.”

“Sure, whatever makes you happy.”

Eventually, once he was well enough to get around on his own, you brought him to his house, checking in on him less frequently.

About three weeks later, you find yourself spending time at Wahoo World along with Team Blue for the costume event. You tagged along with their antics, finally allowing yourself to enjoy the day for once. You grabbed a costume that felt comfortable enough for you, just to amuse Team Blue.

Eventually, you ran into Rider, nearly forgetting he’d be at the event. Or at least- you semi-expected him not to go due to being unwell. You’re glad to see him doing better.

You walk away with Team Blue after you all run into him. You roll your eyes and grab Goggles by the back of his shirt once again to avoid him pantsing Rider. Before walking off too far, you say that you’re gonna go get something back at one of the shops- an excuse to check on Rider.

You jog up beside him quietly. He glares at you before recognizing you. He sighs absentmindedly, but it isn’t out of malice.

You keep your voice low incase anyone noteworthy is around, and ask him if he’s doing alright. He nods towards you, embarrassedly telling you that he’s there to pick up a keychain for Aloha to give to someone. 

“...I know, hun.”

He offers you a shocked look, as if thinking: ‘wait- that’s part of the story? How many people know about this embarrassing day in my life?! Ugh…’

As if reading his thoughts, you tell him that “It’s not that embarrassing. He’s just helping out another person. Is it so bad to be kind?~” You finish with a teasing tone.

He blushes under his mask, tch-ing.

“I’ll be watching your battle with Team Blue!” You say as you walk off to go meet up once again with the aforementioned team while Rider stood dumbfounded.

As the prophecy (a.k.a you) foretold, you stood in the stands as he faced the members of Team Blue. 

They had barely recognised him when the mask came off at the end of the battle. It…was sad to see. They began questioning him up until you showed up and gently told them:

“That’s enough.”

Since devil theory is into anime, what types of genres do they usually watch????

Oh boy, this is gonna be a fun one to talk about :D

Well, for the most part. Also a bit long!

But first, something that’s probably not needed, but just in case: A disclaimer that some of the series mentioned here might not have aged well in terms of like… depictions of minorities or handling certain serious topics in questionable ways. I know a lot of the stuff I loved as a kid had problems like that.

*gestures towards Cardcaptor Sakura which has at least 3 different child/student x adult/teacher relationships, including the protagonist’s own parents for fuck’s sake!!*

Long story short, some of the mentioned series here are ones I have watched myself at some point in my life! I still love some of these for the good parts, but I’m not gonna make excuses for the bad parts (if what I just said about Cardcaptor Sakura doesn’t already make that clear). Again, this kind of thing is probably obvious for most people? But it’s also probably a good idea to state the obvious anyways.

So yeah, now that the disclaimer is established, onto anime talk!! Also a bit of manga talk here and there, since there’s overlap with different series. :u

Reiterating from my big Devil Theory post, all four of them had a little anime-manga club going during their school days (Nunchaku was an honorary member since she still lived in the US during this time). Adding more to this headcanon/idea, they kinda-sorta still have the club going, but it’s really just the four of them hanging out and watching/reading/talking about anime-manga stuff together like friends anyways. Also debates on stuff like power levels, which characters would win in a crossover battle (a la Death Battle), arguments over why a certain manga series does or did not deserve to have an anime adaptation, etc. :P

Also each of them have been bullied for this particular interest to some extent and at some point in their lives. Even with anime and manga being more “acceptable” these days, their first instinct is to still keep quiet about it, and hide any merch they have from anyone who notices. It takes each of them a while to actually open up about the topic to their own partners, let alone any friends outside of their own little circle. They get there eventually!

Moving on to the specific topic of favorite genres, in general they’ll at least check out the popular stuff together. Astro Boy, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, YuYu Hakusho, One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, Full Metal Alchemist, Mob Psycho 100, My Hero Academia, Delicious in Dungeon, Odd Taxi, also various anime movies like the Studio Ghibli films, so on and so forth. You probably get the point! Dragon Ball and its sequels is probably the big one they all remember starting off with. Each of them also have preferences for other stuff they’ll watch/read on their own!

Just as a reminder of who’s who, I’ll put in parentheses which OC corresponds to which DT palette, and a little blurb about them.

For specific favorites for Sai (spring palette, guy with anger problems who gets it sorted out eventually), his favorites are pretty straightforward: as long as it has awesome fights, he’ll watch it! He’ll suffer through a show with a crappy plot if it at least has excellent animation for the fight scenes. Like basically “we saved the budget for the fight scenes and cheaped out on everything else” levels of blegh. Same with manga, it better at minimum have cool art and fight scenes or it ain’t worth it in his opinion. Also he was absolutely inspired to get into art because of those fight scenes, and thus he now works as a freelance artist!

For Nunchaku (summer palette, butch lesbian with high gremlin energy), she really likes sports manga. Admittedly I don’t know a whole lot about this genre of anime/manga myself, but from snippets I’ve seen, I know it can get wild sometimes! Because of the period of her life where her parents forced her to do as many sports as possible, she knows a decent amount about a lot of different sports. She likes to see how the series she reads/watches compare to the real thing, and enjoys when things get really ridiculous.

Also a big fan of the early seasons of Pokemon, Digimon, and Yugioh. Those were her big intros to anime besides Dragon Ball. The later seasons of those three, eh, not so much. She doesn’t hate them but doesn’t love them either, y’know?

In addition to that, she also keeps an eye out for good wlw/yuri series. Nunchaku mostly checks out series made by (or at least written by) actual lesbians, bi women etc. But even then she has a very small pool of stuff she particularly loves, and is also frustrated with how little butch x butch stuff there is.

For Bō (winter palette, blond hair and weightlifting tech guy), he will check out anything involving mecha or cool technology, though he doesn’t always like them (Neon Genesis Evangelion is probably a big one that he regrets watching at all). At the least, if he likes the designs of the mecha/robots featured in the series, he’ll still buy figures or kits of them.

With series he’ll check out on his own that he actually likes, it’s mostly gay manga (i.e. stuff that tends to get labeled as "bara" in Western anime fandoms, even though the term itself is not generally seen as a positive in Japan. At least from what I’ve researched, it probably varies). Of course he enjoys them because Gay, but also because they tend to feature characters with similar body types as him who aren’t meant to be jokes in some way. Which, probably says a lot, doesn’t it? :(

So then besides those two genres and the big popular series he’ll check out with his friends, he’s more into gaming. Like, they all play video games and have their favorites, but Bō is the only one who would call himself a gamer. He has suffered through a lot of horrible video game adaptations of various series, lol…

And finally Daishō (autumn palette, leader of Devil Theory and sometimes basically roleplays as an anime villain while in costume lol), with his love of horror movies, he is also of course a big fan of horror anime and manga! Though whether he genuinely loves what he reads or not kinda depends, due to… sorta complicated feelings.

Okay so, the idea is, for a long while (including even into adulthood), he would check out particularly gruesome and gorey series, even if it got to a point of making him feel genuinely ill. Like, I’m talking about stuff with no deep story or themes to them, no cathartic or at least bittersweet endings. They were mostly if not completely just for the shock value of truly horrific things happening to the characters, who never survived in these series.

And a lot of the time, he read them just to laugh at the characters for being stupid, thinking they deserve the suffering. This also applies to non-anime/non-manga series too. He’d check out the stuff even big slasher fans would want to avoid, if that gives a better idea of what he was seeking.

After sorting out some personal issues (a lot of issues actually, including his big guilt about almost getting his friends and himself killed due to the deal with Faux), he comes to realize he only bothered with that particular subset of horror as a form of self-harm. Again, the big guilt about the Faux deal going wrong, though also guilt about feeling like he’s not doing enough for his friends, that his problems aren’t as bad as other people’s, and so on. Made himself suffer through horror content he can’t stand himself as a sort of subconscious punishment.

Once he works through those feelings, he stops reading/watching stuff like that. He even throws out and burns a lot of the books/DVDs/etc that he collected from that horror subset. After that, he still enjoys horror stuff of course! But he actually respects his own limits and doesn’t force himself to watch/read stuff he knows will just make him feel terrible or ill. He’s a big fan of Junji Ito stuff, plus other stuff in the same vein.

And, I think that about covers it! I was expecting to namedrop a few more series than this, but eh. :P

I’m like 90% sure there are more Knights than those 8 people, but I guess no one else bothers to show up to the meetings.

In the novels, the crossdressing maid cafe was entirely Rod’s idea, but anime seems to be going closer to the manga route. I prefer it this way though

I like how all the girls voted yes for similar reasons.

It’s a blink and you’ll miss it moment, but you can see the Bauer siblings in their maid outfits in the OP.

Yeah, Lambert’s kind of a big deal, so I still find it funny that the First Prince simply referred to him as “the other guy” and “the Vice Captain” in the last episode, like he didn’t know who he was.

Claire’s fear of ghosts and the like is also adorable. And she was so confident a moment ago.

Remember Miss Claire, this is a job you volunteered for.

Now we start to see one of Rae’s most appreciated talents. If it wasn’t for all the teasing she had done previously, Claire might have asked for her hand then and there.

So when Lambert first mentioned about the school being haunted, you can tell Rae was initially confused, but once she heard the details, she immediately knew it was mostly her fault.

I wonder if Rae is getting enough sleep with all of her late night kitchen experiments.

Okay, that’s a nice touch having Misha teaching Ralaire how to play Rock, Paper, Scissors and that’s why she’s been mimicking a hand so much lately.

I sympathise with Claire here. The whole situation was just so unfair.

Of course, Rae knows about that whole tragedy. There’s more to the story, of course. Even with the new novels from Claire’s perspective, we’re learning new details about it that just make the whole thing so much worse.

Given the dream she was having, I bet Claire was the one who grabbed Rae’s hand in her sleep.

Classic isekai trope right there. Rae certainly didn’t choose to be Claire’s maid for the salary, so if Rae needed a lot of money, she’d have to acquire it through other means.

Ah yes, Claire and Ralaire are both gluttons for Rae’s cooking and baking.

Insurance in case “something happens” which coming from Rae and her knowledge of future events yet to come, means the time will come when Lene needs those recipes. Claire might be Rae’s priority, but it’s nice to see her looking out for other people who need it.

First time we see Rae’s healing magic at work. Of course, Rae made sure to figure out how to do healing, in case Claire ever got hurt. On that thought, I’m reasonably confident that the real purpose behind developing her tungsten carbide barrier was also so she can better protect Claire from any threats.

Oof, that foreshadowing.

I see Rae’s ED song has entered a second phase. I’ve listened to the songs so many times by now that I can just tell, even though I can’t understand a single word.

The Foundation Fair is next episode, and that’s going to be a treat to watch for so many reasons. This is going to be a long week.

Ok so, idk if anyone has done this before (probably, yeah. haven’t even checked the tag. my bad) but I have a drama recommendation for y’all!

if u, like me, are a little short on time and have no spot free in your schedule for the foreseeable future (or have the attention span of a goldfish, in which case, same fam. same), then a series composed of 10, 15-minutes episodes might be the solution fit to your needs. AND, if you like women falling in love, the domesticity of routine, and food-prep videos... then oh boi I have a drama just for you!

Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna (2022), or She Loves to Cook and She Loves to Eat, follows the story of two single women getting to know one another when one of them, Nomoto, ends up making too much food for herself one evening and decides to invite her neighbor over, Kasuga. Both women have a particular relationship with food and the social expectations surrounding it, but when something feels right why not savor it fully?

apparently, it was adapted from a manga of the same title by Yuzaki Sakaomi, but I found out about that only after finishing the first episode, when I discovered the manga artist has made adorable end cards for the show that make their appearance while credits roll! so cute!

it’s not explicit, but there is a very heartfelt insight from one of the main characters about identity and self-discovery that truly gave justice to the plot in my opinion. the only content warning I feel the need to point out is centered around instances of fat-phobia and body-shaming: they are brief but handled with care and respect; there are also a couple of incidents surrounding heteronormativity and general discussions of women’s role in society.

also, since festive season is approaching, I feel it would be a disservice to the show if I were to avoid mentioning this: there are a couple of episodes focusing on spending winter holidays away from home, but they offer comfort in the knowledge that one may choose to spend such time with chosen people instead.

all in all it’s a wonderful drama and the episodes are short enough that you can catch up on them at your leisure or let them play all one after the other for a couple of hours and a half while having a blast at it, the world is your oyster. I hope you can find a way to watch it and enjoy it with your loved ones or if you need some companionship in these trying times :D have fun!

Something about this mental image of AFO dressing izuku in fancy clothes, like very dear doll, just stuck with me. And I felt like drawing a few of the more feminine outfits since every one of them has some kind of meaning to the story.

The first more feminine outfit was the one izuku chose specifically when he tried to convince his father to let him go to UA.

"Dad, I want to go back to a real school and make actual friends," Izuku spoke bluntly. Trying his damn hardest to keep himself calm as he asks, and had even prepared himself with his dads favorite outfit. It was a traditional green Hanfu dress with flowers. More than aware it is for women, but it isn't as if it matters in a home where the only company he's allowed is his father.

Absolutely creepy, but in sweet way. As he doesn't care about what he supposed to be wearing and enjoys everything, but at the same time trying to persuade his father to what he wants with it.

The second outfit I drew was the black dress he wore when he accidentally met his childhood friend. And it escalated quickly to the worst

Maybe Izuku was desperate for some kind of recognition. To gather a fraction of the past that his father took him away from after all these years. That he dug far back to that nickname he hated even if didn’t want to say that name as Kacchan was about to leave, “How about Deku?”

Now that seemed to trigger something and a curiously amused expression showed on Bakugou’s face. The recognition sparked in his eyes as a loud hum escaped him.

“Oh yeah! Deku must explain why you look like a weird doll,” Katsuki said with amusement.

Izuku felt a stab in his chest at the other words.

This happened right after izuku ran away from his dinner with his father. Naturally he was wearing a dress. I can't find the exact quote but I remember it being described as dress with a ribbon. Maybe it was just my imagination, but izuku wearing a dress and looks like a doll, Plus kachan recognizing him by his old nickname just felt very symbolic. Like Deku will never be more than just a doll for others.

The last image, and the one I liked the most was izuku wearing his school uniform.

"Dad! Can you grab me my uniform!?"

Izuku doesn't even check what the man brought feeling pretty good right now. Though clearly, he was going to end up late so he just throws it on.

"Sorry he's just- Well he's excited I have a friend," Izuku noted only to realize Shoto was looking at him up and down. "What? Is something wrong?" Ugh, did he not put on enough makeup? Did he put the uniform on and mess up his hair? Izuku felt nervous at his friend's suddenly very critical gaze wondering if he needs to run back home to fix up-

"You look nice,"

Though when he arrived at the school Izuku felt like he was getting a LOT more looks than normal. To the point if he was honest he kind of felt almost anxious about it as while attention can be nice it felt more like they were weirded out. Wondering why that is the case, he worked hard on his appearance! Even Shoto said he looked nice, did he miss something? "Hey do I look weird?" Izuku questioned wondering why people were staring knowing his friend would be honest. Shoto glanced around a bit then back at him in confusion before a light bulb seemed to register. Those eyes light up as he finally decides to answer the question.

"Probably because you're wearing the girl uniform?" Shoto questioned. As if he hadn't just revealed the most horrifying thing Izuku could have done. The innocent way his best friend didn't even think to point out the uniform was for a girl.

The betrayal izuku felt. For his father it was simply a joke. For izuku it was world shattering. How he took izuku's trust and played with it.

Shoto, with his pure heart didn't question it.

I reason chose to give izuku white hair even when he supposed to still have his green is because he's under his father's manipulation. From the moment his mother died his father was everything to him and he was everything for hisashi.

And still, he plays with izuku's life like he's some kind of doll. Just because he doesn't see a problem with it. But for izuku it affects everything.

My frustration with most criticism leveled at manga artists and authors is that people end up addressing symptoms and not causes.

When I was 11 or 12, I wanted to be a manga artist. Part of this particular fixation meant reading a lot of manga and trying to imitate the styles— something you can still see in my art. I came across a manga called Bakuman that I would really recommend, because it gave me a better understanding of why manga has a bigger tendency to have huge plot holes, fucked up character development, and flat characters when compared to, say… published novels. I’ll need to dig it up sometime so I can show y’all specific stuff but for now I’ll work from memory… I need to get these thoughts down.

Most manga are published through weekly magazines, and the artists are expected to come up with a chapter a week. I’ve seen some shifts lately due to the work-related stress and injuries that have abounded as a consequence but that is where things started, and that meant manga artists had to come up with SOMETHING on a schedule, no matter how good or bad it was. (So yeah, that terrible pandering filler chapter/arc was probably a mangaka with a hell of a block.)

Then, within the magazine, there are frequent checks and polls to measure popularity— if a manga isn’t popular enough, it gets cut, whether or not it was finished. (Yeah, that manga you loved that had a really sudden and terrible ending? Probably more niche than you realized.)

Contrast this with traditional publishing (as I saw someone here doing, comparing Harry Potter to My Hero Academia): authors take years to write, and then they have to find an editor, and even if the whole story is published in segments they have at least a year between those segments to plan, write, and edit. NaNoWriMo winners have demonstrated that the writing phase can be finished in a month or two— the rest of the effort goes to editing.

Manga artists have an editor, sure, but that editor is on the same deadline. Worst-case scenario they get a day or two to read over the chapter.

Novels also tend to remain popular enough not to have to deal with getting cut— and most novelists will just finish in self-publishing if their publisher decides to terminate their contract. Manga artists simply move to the next idea, from what I’ve seen.

This leads to a system where, I kid you not, most artists are just throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. They get an idea, it gets dashed out, and then they see what happens. I can’t tell you how many artists I’ve seen express genuine surprise at the popularity of their ideas, and I think it’s just because that idea was one in maybe five or six that got submitted to the magazine that round. They have to figure it out as they go, and what does that mean? Plot holes.

And if a manga is popular enough, the expectation is that the manga artist will continue to make it… and make it… and make it. My dad joked once that you’ll always find another villain behind the latest big bad with these types of series, because the goal is not to create a cohesive story but to maintain audience attention as long as possible. My Hero may be in the middle of a final battle, but who knows whether AFO will actually turn out to be the ultimate villain— while Voldemort was clearly the problem and remained the problem for the entire Harry Potter series. (I’m working with the comparison I saw— I have some personal issues with JKR as an artist and a person that I won’t get into here.)

You see where I’m going with this, right? I sure hope so.

Learning that, as a manga artist, I would be expected to continue creating what gets popular no matter how I felt about it— that was what tanked my desire to become a manga artist. And I love manga to death, but I’ve also learned not to expect much of it because the system itself is designed in such a way that only the most batshit insane series with wild twists and turns and crazy unrealistic characters will succeed. Think about Naruto, Bleach, My Hero, ONE PIECE, etc. it’s a miracle there’s a plot line there at all.

Unfortunately, some people hold these manga to the same standard as Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Steelheart, Mistborn, etc. And as long as they do so, they’re going to be disappointed, because the manga publishing world is basically a reflection of the internet influencer world— “create till you drop and everyone forgets your name” is the goal of the game. Until we see some kickback against that system, you’re not going to see well-developed manga that are also popular.

If you do find one, congratulations! Cherish it. The mangaka probably had to kick a few shins to keep it true to their vision.

Truly. And thank you so much. Well, considering the series does make me happy (including a certain someone), I feel like I will probably be happy while reading it and true. We got hints of angst in the anime and I feel like they’ll undoubtedly be explored more.

Sure thing. And do. It’s good so definitely check it out when you have the chance. I see and I understand. My friend sent me some manga panels of the slightly darker moments and I feel like it would have been difficult to animate. Though I have heard that they’re making another season, that’s coming out this April, so it’ll be interesting to see how that goes. Yeah. The second season is pretty much entirely anime-only and Alois and Claude do not exist in the manga universe. But the third season is based on the manga again so then the anime series becomes good again. Me too. Like I was already excited to hear about him voicing Grelle and then Lawless’s VA also appeared later on so that’s just great. But at some point Grelle did sing and I could connect the voice to Yata’s moment in Requiem of Red.

Thank you. I’ve given you my essay and hope that it’s all clear enough since it was a ramble but it was the only way I knew how to do it. It’s nothing. Some bits were a bit more difficult to come up with than others but all in all, didn’t take extremely long. Only time will tell with that one. But either way, I am looking forward to learning more about him and of course seeing more of Lawless (and him). But yeah, every interaction is important so they will be interesting to see.

I see. That is a real shame and sounds like it would be horrible in some cases. I see. A part of me figured that after I initially read your message but it’s so horrible that they’ll still fight you, especially if the frames are super expensive. But I am glad that there is an optometrist around that you can go to, even if it does take ages. Yeah. I can imagine that. Like overall, I have pretty okay eyesight since I don’t wear my glasses during the day in the house but I feel like I’d also definitely struggle with reading the subtitles unless I was sitting right in front of the TV. I'm so glad the series makes you happy and I'm looking forward to talking to you more about it, both through anything you wanna send through the inbox and in our messages through dm's (which I am hoping to get off one more within the next week or so before I go temporarily AWOL to write commissions/passion projects). And I will say they definitely do explore more of everything touched upon in the anime within the manga. Manga often gives more space and time to really flesh out events and characters and development, just because the pacing can be a little more relaxed and it's one of the things about that medium that I really love.

I will check it out when I get the chance and thanks again for letting me know about it. And I do feel the art style of Black Butler, though ungodly beautiful at points, is something that definitely would be hard to animate and still keep looking exactly that way. And I hope you'll enjoy the new season when it comes out. I have been told by another friend that some of the specials are really fun to watch, but it's definitely worth it to devote my time to catching up manga-wise if I feel like getting back into Black Butler, so I might just bump that up the to-read list a little, especially since I've been a little spoiled in that I'm told there's some really interesting things going on now with Undertaker and that was a character I had really loved and found intriguing. I couldn't name a single one of the voice actors from shows I like without googling the characters I first heard them as, so again, just you and the people like you, who can hear those characters all in the voices and know voice actors work definitely make me flabbergasted, in the best of ways, and make me really happy for these artists getting the recognition and love that deserves.

That's very reassuring to hear because yeah, when I get talking, I don't shut up and I have been told by friends in real life that getting texts from me can feel a little bit like a bombardment but I'm always just so excited to talk to interesting people and discuss things and share my thoughts. Plus, I adore long replies and walls of text from people, because it shows excitement and enjoyment of the conversation, so long replies never both me either, so you're cool that way. And I have the replies but haven't really taken the time to fully read everything, just in trying to work away at stuff as quickly as possible. I kept one but deleted three. I really need a little bit of radio silence, just for a week or so, so I can really buckle down and write these posts without my focus getting distracted or me feeling like things just keep being added to the 'to-write' pile, please and thank you.

And it is a shame, because good quality health care should be a basic human right to me, but at the same time, I have to remember to see the positives in it all. And I don't agree with fighting any patient for their prescription, as it's actually legally a right for the patient to know and you actually hit the nail on the head - Vogue Optical frames can range from $200-$400, after my lens prescription is added in there, as I have absolutely horrific eyesight and already wear bifocals at my age. So, not even ashamed to admit that I am a little jealous of people who don't need to wear glasses all the time and terribly jealous of people who don't need to wear them at all because I've been wearing glasses since pre-K haha.

I love music, and I only switched to a digital library because I ran out of space. I still have, in storage, a shit ton of CD's (both burnt and bought) and cassette tapes, plus a couple vinyl records. Music is a pretty constant for me, that or podcasts, way more than I would say television is and every time I sit down to write, I normally make an hour or two long playlist to listen to while writing so I get having a playlist for when you're posting on AO3. Heck, even the shortest of my drabbles on here have at least a 3-4 song playlist I listened to while writing them, and some of my AU's have a 20 song playlist I listened to on loop while thinking them out and writing them. Also, always up for song recommendations, in case anyone has some, just putting that hint out in the universe for ya'll to drop them in my dm's.
