Toxicinsanity (Mayor X Syntax) is always a fun one. I love the art and the angst that goes with it. I mean, Mayor literally kills Syntax so anything healthy coming out from it is a bit of a far stretch. I talked about it in another ask recently but yeah this ship is good lol.

But the idea of a healthy relationship being a far stretch is the same with shadowpeach (Wukong x Macaque) for me. I mean, I kind of like it? I see the appeal (I won't pass up their gay monkey content). But with the way the characters have been established as of right now (pre season five) I cannot see Wukong and Macaque fully reconciling with each other and making full amends for their wrong doings against each other. Even if the idea of these two becoming as close as they used to be before the attack on the celestial realm seems too strange for me. Some relationships can't be repaired. But honestly the idea that the two were childhood lovers or had crushes on each other before the falling out is really sweet so I'll give it that.

Destiny bones (Mayor x LBD) is a ship I would love if not for how LBD literally just replaces Mayor with Wukong in S3 Finale. But honestly given how LBD was literally going to die if she didn't do that I'm pretty sure Mayor would forgive her (I mean, I doubt LBD could do anything for any reason to make them not worship her anymore). And, to be honest, if she really did want to replace the Mayor with a more powerful servant, then she probably would have already gotten rid of him when she regained her hold on Macaque. But anyways, I love the dynamic of LBD having so much control over Mayor and what that could mean for their relationship. I can definitely see Mayor being in love with LBD (in all the ways possible), it's just the idea of LBD loving Mayor in turn which makes me contemplate it a little. I mean, I just don't see LBD as someone who would invest in a romantic relationship? Or any relationship at all? Not because she is heartless but because she has dedicated her life to her destiny. Freenoodles (Pigsy x Tang) - Also really sweet to me, I just, love those two. I know that Lego will probably never officially make them canon but I think it's just a given that the two are in a relationship, married or not. Sometimes the coding in the writing is enough.

Syntax x Shoe Store Worker - An inside joke between me and a mutual of mine but it's a very silly crack ship.

Regardless, none of these ships will top Shadowpuppet for me. I rest my case.

I have never played Stanley parable in my life but I am in LOVE with your narrator design

AHH thank you so much!! I’m glad he’s been received well!! Honestly, I spent so long worrying about and fussing over his design. Probably sounds preachy but I wanted to make sure he held the multiplicity/complexity of his character where he’s capable of being smug and smarmy as well as antagonistic, fussy, apathetic, vulnerable, pitiable, goofy, endearing, playful and even loveable. And fuckable , yes I’ll admit. (I actually ended up listening to the Narrator’s voice lines alone for HOURS to get the right feeling while drawing him.)

So yeah it was a bit tough to hit the visuals that matched that range of character for him. I love all kinds of different designs for the Narrator, especially the more abstract ones bc they’re so creative but I also like the human ones where he’s just some silly old man bc I think what makes the Narrator so appealing to everyone (besides Kevan Brighting’s EXCELLENT voice acting, which is a big part of it bc of how he delivers these lines) is how he’s written with so much character and personality. Despite definitely probably not being human, he comes off as SO incredibly human, almost to a fault. He feels like a person with flaws that we can relate to, especially as creative people who want to communicate and connect with others, rather than a typical AI or program in the game that’s just running as intended.

Anyway, I’m rambling but I’m so glad people love him and I really appreciate the comments I’ve gotten about how they think he also fits the voice. When you do that, I think that’s when you hit the jackpot. Especially as a character designer. You want everything about the character to sync up with who they are or what they’re written/described as.

There’s so much more I could go in depth about when it comes to what I took into consideration when designing my Narrator and what I think about him as a character, especially in my own AU, but it’s a LOT for another time. Which I credit basically entirely to Adrian Greensmith, as it was a vision he had for the character. I really can’t imagine Hunter having been played by anyone else as he brought so much to the role. (Fun fact, if I remember correctly: Noah Urrea, who plays Clay, originally auditioned for Hunter. No harm but I'm very glad he didn't get that. He makes a good Clay and Hunter just needed to be played by Adrian.)

One of the key things Adrian brought to the role also being, probably accidentally, his anxiety.

"I spent a lot of Metal Lords feeling a bit anxious [...] and in hindsight I wonder if some of that was just a sign that Hunter was quite an anxious character [...] I mean his body's so tense all the time." - Adrian Greensmith.

I shortened that quite a bit so I'm including a slightly longer clip of the interview audio for more context. (I can upload a subtitled video clip if anyone wants that as well as link the video on yt but I'd have to do a bit of a search for that)

Aside: If I had to guess I'd say he's probably referring to Peter Sollett who directed Metal Lords when he mentions a 'Pete'.

And yeah the bratting thing was a little bit of a joke but mostly not a joke. Without going absolutely off the deep end, the mentality behind bratting is something I really see in Hunter.

Evie Lupine has a wonderful video about bratting and why people would be interested in it (and why some people hate it) but a short snippet that always spoke to me from that is the following:

"The motivations behind bratting are pretty varied. I think one of the main ones would be a sense of security and comfort. This is when the acting out is sort of a way to be reassured that even when you, break rules, even when you push at things, the partner that you're with is not going to abandon you." - Evie Lupine

Obviously, with Hunter's fear of abandonment, it's easy to see why this would appeal to him.

He also just...idk he has brat energy - sincerely, a brat.

And Kevin does just play out the counterpart to that. He doesn't always have Hunter under control but he tries to.

And he does mostly act as that safe person to brat against, which again amplifies the impact it has when Hunter starts to think he's actually losing Kevin, destroying that feeling of safety.

Aside: I obviously don't think that these characters, in universe, negotiated for a bratting dynamic. In universe it'd be something that just sort of organically developed within their friendship/relationship. But even more than that it's an archetype of a dynamic that we as the audience can easily read into their interactions if that makes sense.

And yeah, I have ADHD as well. And RSD is something that affects me pretty fucking severely. I've only really become more aware of it in the past year or so as my partner has pointed it out more and more.

So it's definitely something that I then noticed more and more in Hunter too.

Obviously this is all just my take on the character, and other people might have totally different interpretations. That's the beauty of art, we all get to find what we need in it and read it in our own ways, influenced by our own life experiences.

Re: relationships in Potion Permit

The grind in Potion Permit is awful and tedious. The player's options for money/resources definitely fall short of the variety in Stardew Valley or Coral Island. But, I've decided this game is not for the player who actually wants a lot out of the central simulation. This is for the simulation player who wants to see character development in the NPCs, and not just in the romanceables.

Often, the other townies are even more interesting than the dateables. Every single townie — even the freaking cat — has a storyline to unlock. Everyone is figuring something out about themselves, or about the town, or about you, and you just need to get to know them to be part of the process.

As usual, there's a lot of busted stuff around town that only gets fixed as you progress through the game. But, at least the way I've been playing, making friends is part of that progress. Because I'm getting mixed up in people's lives and getting to know everybody, I know I'm not the only one working for the betterment of the town.

So, it doesn't really feel as though everyone is just sitting around while I pay for everything. The mayor, the law enforcement, the crafters, the rangers — they all seem genuinely interested in doing their part for Moonbury, and genuinely grateful for my help. I'm forever needing to chop a gazillion thousand wood and break a bajillion thousand rocks 🥴, but hey, if it helps restore the environment, or helps a mother and a daughter hone their craft and respect each other, maybe it'll be worth it.

I also appreciate the dose of realism the Chemist gives every character whose story involves a potion request. Yeah, I'll give you something for your insomnia, but you still need to work through your anxiety and fix your sleep schedule. We all need to do the work.

Romance in this game definitely leaves something to be desired. [SPOILERS] Once you reach the dating stage with someone, after the thrill of the confession cutscenes, little else changes besides the option to go on a date every now and then. And I do like the dates — I like the idea of hitting the bathhouse with my boo after a long day chopping wood / breaking rocks (gods, so many rocks 😩😩😩). But maybe marriage in Stardew has spoiled me; it would be nice to be able to move in with my Potion Permit partners, start and end the day with them, and get a bit more variety in the cycle of dialogue lines now that our relationship has changed.

As for the options: Rue reads as too young and naive for me. Martha, the first person to try to make friends with the Chemist, is a real sweetheart who deserves to be happy and loved. Leano — haven't actually made level-two friends with her as I don't go to the beach that often, but I can see the appeal. I picked Matheo purely for the tsundere enemies-to-lovers arc, but I genuinely respect his ideals and his conviction. Xiao is logical and studious, but also surprisingly forward — I hear his wanting to spend more time with me in the same matter-of-fact tone I imagine the rest of his dialogue, and it always catches me a off guard. Reyner is a tough guy who needs to soften up, and he has the most suggestive cutscenes. 👐🏼👀

Oh — *is handed a card; squints* — I've just learned that partners don't get jealous if you date other people! That will at least save me from the wood/stone grind of a new save just to explore all the romantic options.

The devs have also said they'll be adding more romanceables. I guess I'll just keep fingers crossed for Lucke (sweet farmer boy genius), Helene (cheeky button-pushing games mistress), and Runeheart (could probably break me in half with her arms).

Overall, this game is pretty low in the mechanics department (seems dumb that you can't use your own healing potions on yourself). But I've still really enjoyed meeting all of the characters and becoming a part of Moonbury.

Eddie hates his father so much and hates war (he still goes to Afghanistan, in the epilogue) and rebels against that, Buck doesn't like being considered the pretty boy the whole time, and gets real good at charmspeak, Maddie has the whole love thing totally under control (Doug doesn't happen in this cause fuck him) and Karen as a daughter of Apollo is so real to me. They go on a (to be decided) quest, of Hen, Chim, Buck and Eddie, and they all get into many precarious situations and it's all just a load of fun. And then in the epilogue, it's them working at the 118 and using their powers to help and yeah! Vibes.

I think the issue with "the block button is here" is an approach. It feels natural to you, because you know not everything is for you,, you carve out your own space, and that's fine. But for them, if they see something, the thing is on their territory, not other way round. It's not enough to look away, they want it gone from their space - and their space is for them the entirety of where they look.

Draycest for me is very appealing when Drayden is aware of Drayton's crush, of Drayton's deep, deep desire. I saw some scenario on other side of fence that Drayton possibly could be a pretty much free use slut to try and make Drayden furious, maybe jealous, definitely angry for him.
