I see that in your pinned post you like the lunar chronicles and I wanted to talk about it to someone
I’m currently on book one not super far into but I’m really enjoying it and starting to understand why is a popular series (also I’m listening to it on audio book which is something I never do but it’s also super good)
Hi Kay! Ooh yay, this ask made me so happy! I love the Lunar Chronicles and am super glad you're enjoying them! Not only are those books incredible, but they also give me really fond memories, since I read them all (at least, the original four) during a two-week program I went to in the summer of 2021 at a college that happens to be the college I will be attending this fall! So those books have very special memories attached to them for me.
I remember reading and liking the first book a lot, but in my opinion, it only gets better from here. The first book was fun and entertaining, but I got to the point where I could not make myself put down the second book, read the third in two days while I was also very busy, and stayed up much later than I should have to finish the 800-page monster that is the final book. So, all that to say... I was entranced. These books had me under a spell, which I didn't break even after I was finished.
But! Rambling over, I'm so glad you're liking them! Feel free to rant to me in my inbox about them any time- I hope you have fun with the rest of the books. I'm sure you can see this already, but it has incredible characters, really sweet romances with absolutely zero love triangles (thank goodness), and some of the best found family I've ever read.
And I'm glad you're liking the audiobook! Personally, I don't tend to listen to audiobooks when I read a book for the first time, but if I enjoyed a book I love going back to listen to the audiobook, so maybe I'll have to check that out! Is the narrator good? I'm listening to the Keeper audiobooks right now (I'm on Neverseen) and I obviously love the books but the narration makes me cringe sometimes, especially when she does accents. But I've heard some incredibly narrated audiobooks as well, so if you like the narration maybe I'll have to give it a shot! I've been wanting to reread those books anyway.
And somewhat related- I know my blog is primarily a KOTLC blog, but in my pinned post I have some other books/media you can talk to me about! I'll be updating that soon, so if anyone wants to talk about something else (mostly books tbh) I have those in my pinned post :)

Saw your ask about going to a bookshop, got any book recommendations for someone who hasn't read many books in a while? Which type of stories intrigue you the most? Do you like movies? If so, which genres, which flicks?

My favourite fiction genre is fantasy, and I do so love @neil-gaiman's books; I've read 6 of his books so far this year. I've also read a few books from people here on Tumblr, such as Time to Orbit: Unknown and Curse Words by @derinthescarletpescatarian or Hunger Pangs by @thebibliosphere, or When The Angels Left The Old Country by @kuttithevangu. They're all lovely authors, and I think that Derin's books would be especially wondrous for someone who hasn't read in a while - they're tremendously engaging. I have also read a lot of other fiction this year, not by authors on Tumblr, but if we were to talk about all of the books I've read, we'd be here all day.
In terms of non-fiction, I tend to like books to do with religion, sociology, and anthropology. I've been reading a few books about the intersection of religion and queer identity lately, including the book I got yesterday. We also tried to look for Gathering Moss, which has been on my to read list for a while, as I loved Braiding Sweetgrass. Sadly, although Gathering Moss was meant to be on the shelf, it couldn't be found, so I couldn't get it yesterday.
Some other books I've got at that bookshop recently included the Wizard of Earthsea trilogy by Ursula K Le Guin, which I haven't read yet, and People Love Dead Jews, which was rather informative. It is a rather lovely bookshop; it's quite small, but it is an independent bookshop and publisher and tends to have books that the larger bookshops don't tend to have.
In terms of films, I tend to prefer either older films, odd films, or a mixture of the two.

Thinking about Murderbot and ART again and how Murderbot is so adamant that ART is not its friend and that they can't be friends and okay fine it'll tell the stupid space ship about its traumatic past but only because it keeps pestering it! And alright, maybe ART can help Murderbot and do a little surgery on it and assist with uncovering the Dark Secrets™ of Murderbot's past but it's and asshole and NOT Murderbot's friend!!!
And then when Murderbot mentions ART to its clients on RaviHyral it just immediately goes for the word "friend"??? And I understand that it couldn't exactly say "there's this giant research transport AI in my feed that helps me pretend to be a human" but like. Murderbot, darling, you could have used anything. You're cosplaying as pretending to be a professional human security consultant, you could have said something like "associate" or "assistant" or whatEVER but "friend" just rolled right off the tongue there, didn't it?

Once again being haunted by the "I do not know what strength is in my blood, but I swear to you, I will not let the White City fall, nor our people fail." "Our people...I would have followed you, my brother...my captain...my king." to "Sons of Gondor, of Rohan, my brothers! ... There may come a day when the courage of men fails, when we forsake our friends, and break all bonds of fellowship, but it is not this day!" pipeline

also if only the physical copy of how to disappear completely & never be found i first encountered & read a few years ago (sort of [roughly avg age ten] reader book, not any similarly titled How To) hadn't disappeared completely & not been found since, probably b/c i put it somewhere i intended to be For Safekeeping, which is also how my binder vanished....b/c it's one of those like. those book for late elementary/middle school readers when they just weave in this unrealism which makes for a delightful range & unpredicability? and with a cynical protagonist girl like off to the races like wow her mom is depressed asf & smoking? and it's about A Family History Secrets Mystery so blatantly a haunting that the inciting incident is basically introducing a haunted [family history secrets mystery] house. and spoilers don't matter like it's stemming from there being this missing uncle who grew up so in contrast to the Winsome Winning Sibling Who Does It All Right while seeing his own affiliation with rats that he tried to disappear completely & never be found which led to this Tragedy which led to this more unintended disappearance of his & he haunts this house & wants to be left alone & only goes out at night with this [ambiguous Is That A Giant Rat Or Weird Small Dog (protagonist affected by these family situations who expresses her preoccupation with an awareness of how fate can Strike and Get you with this interest with roving packs of killer chihuahuas. people think she's weird though she spontaneously befriends this other girl struck with this bolt from the blue & a bit weird / outcast & then Insightful who i wish was in it more)] & plays into the hauntedness danger like playing into the [something's Wrong with you then] until having to take yet more action where the urge to express the truth comes out more both b/c living that hidden is more threatened but also b/c now the niece children are more threatened as well. ft. a sort of preternatural blurring of time b/c of only being communicated with through this uncle via his comic pages (that he paints?) of dubiously accurate translations of irl events that are created so quickly it seems to verge on foresight, imagine like "hmm what's this painting. it's me standing in this room looking at this painting??? as someone ominous lurks in the shadows right behind me?" in both [now how could you know this & paint it really fast ahead of time] and [horror]

i know I told you I'd never catch that fucking disease we're calling all for the game by nora sakavic but if I'm gonna be honest with you the same day I said that I'd already asked gloomy if I should read it when he was complaining to me, and I kind of want to. like no I absolutely do not but also it looks so bad. the siren call of bad media is a strong one. but also fucking no
on the one hand yes this would be hilarious but also on the other hand gloomy has rid me of my naive belief that every single person is susceptible to the aftg phenomenon and if i had both of you bullying me about it i think id have to leave tumblr
