HUGEEEEE fan of your de!swap fic! Just finished reading chapter 5 and WOW what a chapter. I'm soooo glad to see that suzerainty popped up, the original scene with that game is my favorite scene, and I'm overjoyed to see that it carried over to your fic!!

Curious question, what was your motivation behind choosing what skills Kim has? I love all the skills you created for the fic, and I'd like to know your thought process behind it

But, yes, the skills. Oh man, anon, the skills. You have opened up a can of worms here. You’ve given me an opportunity to rant here, anon. So I really hope you’re ready for a long post because I have plenty of thoughts, my friend.

But before we actually get into any of my skill related thought processes and ideas I’d like to preface this post with 2 things!

Many of the skills (and generally the early parts of the fic) are inspired by a hodgepodge of many different people’s headcanons and art here on tumblr! Which, because I’m one of god’s favourite clowns with a terrible short term memory, I have no idea what came from where! I looked at and read a lot of the things that later inspired me before I ever thought of writing the fic at all. And I never thought about writing any of my sources of inspiration down before I had already finished the draft of chapter 1! Which I kinda feel terrible about! The readers with a better memory than I might remember that I wrote in the first chapter that if anyone saw anything that looked familiar they should tell me so I could give proper credit. (Which I still implore any keen eyed reader to do!) So yeah, this is just to say; I’m not a genius who came up with all of this on my own and I was inspired by many cool people so don’t give me too much credit!

BUT! If anyone ever wants to write or draw anything using the skillset I’ve made for my version of swap!Kim, then you are so very welcome! So don’t sweat it if you want to reuse a name, concept, or the entire set! I’d just be happy to have inspired you:-]

Anyways sorry for the preamble. I just needed to get that said before I go down my rabbit hole:-)

So, let’s get to it! (For real this time I promise, anon) Here are a few of my general thoughts about my Kim skillset and some individual insight into more of the “interesting” skills!

There were a few things I considered when making the skills. For one I needed to figure out what skills were needed because of narrative necessity and what were needed for characterisation. For an example HANDS ON is almost only a “Kim is physically interacting with his surroundings and I need to describe that” skill while TORQUE DORK, on the other hand, is a fluff skill that’s there because of Kim’s interests in machinery. Besides their personalities the skills also need to serve a role in telling a story, y’know? Whether that be description or character. That’s also one of the reasons that Kim only has 16 skills instead of Harry’s 24. A fic is a different medium than a game so it’s not necessary to have quite so many skills. But, if you want my non-boring justification for that, I also just think that Kim is far less scattered brained than Harry! The man is simply more together even when he’s falling apart so he therefore has a few more “multi purpose skills”:-]

Speaking about Harry, I felt like it would be important that Kim’s skills felt unique to him even if some of them started out as reskins of Harry’s (I mean, how do you make a skill responsible for logic without giving it similarities to Harry’s LOGIC skill??). Not that they needed to stand out completely but rather I didn’t want to feel like I was applying Harry’s voices to Kim’s head. Which also means that Kim’s skills just can’t do the same things that Harry’s can! For one they aren’t as psychically inclined even if they can take guesses and read people in similar ways (which they’re partially that good at because of narrative necessity, but hey man, don’t look at me I’m just trying to tell a good story here!)

One thing which I also really wanted to stress with the skills too is that many of them have “rivalries” or “alliances” with one another. Some of them are complete opposites (EYES vs. OUTSIDER) while others will almost always back each other up (POISE & COMMAND). This animosity is there because; one, Kim is constantly trying to keep himself in check and is very harsh on himself so therefore no skill can ever “win” for long. Two; I’m a BIG fan of the thought of “Kim’s centrism is killing him”. So therefore every skill is almost always pulling him in different directions and opposing each other while Kim is trying to thread the needle of just existing. And because there’s this constant infighting Kim’s mind becomes a very hostile place to be. One last general consideration before I get into some individual skills! I really love how having a high level skill in DE also has its downsides! They have blindspots! They have one track thoughts and motivations! And it’s dangerous to only listen to one of them! So I attempted to show that with Kim’s high level skills like VOLTA DO MAR and POISE in the fic:-]

Anyways: individual skill thoughts! I don’t have something to say about all of them but I'll quickly go through my thoughts on some of the more interesting ones in order. (Also I’m so sorry for rambling so long, anon. Here's the part of the post I think you're interested in.)

Starting off with PUZZLEBOX and NOTEKEEPER! If I’m honest I think these two are inseparable; Note provides information and Puz connects the dots. They’re quite obviously Kim’s deductive and note taking powerhouses. Note does however also have a purpose as a narrative device since it’s the one that recalls past information (that Kim can remember). They’re a little like a narrator in that sense. Anyways I don’t have many thoughts about these two but I think they’re kinda cute in how “dumb” they can be despite being intellect skills:-]

FANTASME is not a skill that gets a lot of the limelight but they do have a good amount to say even though they’re a low level skill. They’re kind of a CONCEPTUALISATION and INLAND EMPIRE mix I guess. They’re focused on Kim’s “nerd” things (that isn’t machinery or paperwork) and escapism. They know about art but they don’t really “get it” as Harry can. They’re also the driving force behind Kim’s existential dread as you have seen in chapter 4.

BLEEDING HEART is what I labelled as the “feelings” skill, and they were kind of an EMPATHY clone in the early concepts before I really figured them out. Because all they really want for Kim is for him to feel. Their second priority is making sure that Kim feels for the people around him as well. To Bleed it doesn’t really matter what emotions Kim is feeling as long as they are being felt and that he isn’t hurting or “burdening” anyone. They’re sad, suppressed, and visceral. Another thing about them is that similarly to how ESPRIT DE CORPS is the “gateway skill” that Harry uses to read Kim, BLEEDING HEART is the “gateway skill” Kim uses to read Harry in the fic. This is mostly because I don’t think Harry can be understood through the lens of the RCM like Kim can in the game.

EYES is interesting to me. Because they aren’t the RCM but rather swap!Kim’s understanding of the RCM personified. Which both means they’re brutally honest about how the police sucks but that they also cannot let go of duty and loyalty for the life of them. They are aptly named after Eyes; Kim’s last main connection to the RCM and its office culture. Which is very cool but also not my original idea! And because of the reasons mentioned prior I really don’t remember who came up with that stroke of genius but I would honestly like to thank them personally. (If I ever get my hands on the post I saw it in I’ll link it here)

I love the idea of OUTSIDER. Kim having a skill that’s specifically manifested because of how alienated he feels is so interesting to me! That how much the world has failed him is ingrained in him just speaks volumes, y’know. Outs don’t have too much of a narrative purpose compared to other skills but I do love them regardless. They aren’t completely my original idea either, but unlike EYES, I have no idea where I got this one from. (Again, if I find the source I’ll put in a link, but for now my cursed memory can produce nothing.)

JOIE DE VIVRE is the most fun little guy in Kim’s mind to me. They are what makes life fun (as their name suggests) and they ultimately represent indulgence. They are essentially good to listen to occasionally but not constantly. Because Joie is all about base desires which they want fulfilled now. “Hey! Smoke that cigarette now! Hey! Fuck that guy now! Hey! Avoid your responsibilities now!” And if they don’t get that they will immediately trash talk whoever shut them down. And, to say the least, they are constantly being repressed by the other skills. Kim can’t get rid of them but, oh man, does he wish he could.

VOLTA DO MAR is my swap!Kim’s signature skill. And it shows: they are used to being in control. They are all about keeping Kim going and they generally serve a similar role like VOLITION does in terms of keeping Kim sane. But they are really nothing like VOLITION. They’re mean. They’re efficient. They’re a completionist and simultaneously a survivor. They will shut down anything they deem unnecessary while also dealing with any odd situation which Kim simply needs to roll with. Volt ultimately thinks they know best and is thusly kind of a dick.

NERVE is a kind of “physical skill all in one” with the added on flavour of repressed anger. NERVE’s name then, of course, both comes from the biological nerve and because of the “that struck a nerve” saying. They just want Kim to follow his gut and retaliate for once. They’re the physicality of anger and instinct. Which has pros and cons…

POISE is an interesting little fella to me. They’re kind of like a teen who’s obsessed with being cool and keeping up face and facade in my eyes:-) And since they’re also such a high level skill they get to talk a lot, and with their focus being reputation a large part of that talk is about how embarrassed Kim should be. They’re a personification of self consciousness and intrusive anxiety riddled thoughts and yet they’re also one of Kim’s most useful skills, both in regards to reading others and not being read himself. They’re sort of a necessary evil in that sense.

Oh man. That was a ramble. And I didn’t even talk about every skill. Well, I’m all tuckered out now but thank you so much for the ask, anon! I kinda took it as an excuse to just talk for once so I hope that alright:-]

I don’t know how many people (if any) will find this interesting so, to the people who got this far, I’ll tell you my swap!Kim’s 5 highest level skills as a token of my appreciation for reading:-) Number one is of course VOLTA DO MAR, followed by POISE, BLEEDING HEART, NOTEKEEPER, and then lastly COMMAND. Extra fun fact; EYES and OUTSIDER are always the exact same level and this makes them furious.

NARUTO TOPIC: (NON-)'CANON'

In regard to this ask by @isabeldc (and a lot of recent Anon asks about Canon).

(Very long post. [a lot of warnings])

Eh.. I feel like I might be the only person interested in this topic from a p.o.v. that talks about what goes on behind the story. And that is fine this is my personal view. But I think it is vital in a conversation like this because that is where it starts. I still hope this answers the Canon asks I still had though. I apologize, I have studied marketing and am studying storytelling, so this post is kinda theoretical.

Disclaimer: What is Canon is not up to you or me, but your truth will always be yours.

Yes, this post is intentionally color coded.

WHAT DOES CANON MEAN?

Canon is original (and official) source material.

So, as 'Naruto' became an entire franchise based on that original source material- this means: the Manga.

However, additionally Canon also means: material derived from the original source that matches the same narrative. Kishimoto's narrative. (His work.)

A common misconception is that narrative is the same as storytelling (skill) or plot. A plot (chronological) is part of the story. It is a sequence of events (beginning → end). The complete narrative can be more seen as the story itself, a structure and a means to help you understand the creator's perspective and their values. Aka, again: Kishimoto's narrative, his p.o.v. By definition all literature is narrative. This is a very complex topic and yet despite 'Naruto Canon' being easy to define- some people are confused. I also know it's not that serious, I'm making this because I find the topic interesting. That's all.

What made it so confusing for 'Naruto'?

When you experience a story (reading/watching/listening) you use two ways of thinking: paradigmatic and a narrative one. It means logic (facts/truth) and the narrative way of thinking which deals more with human intentions, feelings and personal experiences. They play a part in your interpretation*.

A story's structure reflects the way we, as a learning individual, give meaning to (or make sense out of) personal experiences. Also why humans benefit from learning through narrative (story) as it is more easily absorbed by our brains.

Hence, in our case, when you observe an absurd amount of mental gymnastics or out-of-context reasoning to force 'boy loves girl' despite evidence, (heteronormative thinking), what is really happening is that someone is trying to mentally connect pieces of information to an existing related thread of thoughts. This through concepts, feelings, images, sensations, metaphors etc. An element ('Naruto's story) is ‘wrapped’ and connected to existing narratives in our head. Often biased. (s)

It is not always ignorance or ill intent. Not always.

Such idiosyncratic interpretations* of Canon and other contradictions that only live in a fan's head are Headcanon.

*Note: stories play a very important role in interpretation. And while the mind is a personal thing that in itself is not an excuse to create false narratives on purpose. (Cognitive bias.) These are obvious as they lack in sufficient and accurate information. Your "interpretation" isn't source-material-truth (as in Canon) by itself.

That's why it has been easy to ignore marketing material until now because:

Whoever controls the narrative has the power to influence the reader/viewer. (Depending on target-audience. And yes, I'm talking about what you think I'm talking about.)

Which brings me to..

Ownership

Viz Media (terms are incredibly long) says that Kishimoto and Viz Media LLC/Shueisha co-own 'Naruto's licensing. Viz Media (led by Ken Sasaki) is also the one that oversees the financial and operational concerns, controls, buys and handles all the affiliations (which also means hiring third-party employees), licensing and broadcasting businesses as it is the parent company. And well, this is normal. Kishimoto is a Mangaka, not a business man.

What I'm emphasizing here is that Kishimoto does not have full ownership of 'Naruto' (which has its own rules) as it became more than a story. A franchise. Something that became a profitable source due to the story's success. Even as he was creating the Manga, he mentioned in interviews that he had to argue with the team about details/scenes (Naruto's sexy Harem Jutsu- guy version etc) and that he felt pressured about x, y and z.

A popular book about screenwriting ("Save the Cat!" by Blake Snyder) talks about pre-sold franchises. It is when studios produce sequels/remakes that an audience is already "sold" on. A built-in fan base. In the early '00s big companies already had trouble grabbing a viewer's attention as the average attention span was cut down to 30 seconds. These days it is down to less than 5. (Newer studies say it's more an issue of us becoming more demanding, an adaptation of sorts.) People quickly give up on new shows if it doesn't grab them immediately and it is hard to cut through all the traffic that competes for attention. I even notice myself finding it hard to get into new shows lately and needing to really sit down in order to give it a chance. 'Naruto' has everything that Hirohiko Araki (creator of JoJo) describes as 'the Royal Road of Manga', so decision-makers just don't think that you're out there always wanting to try something new. They're not willing to gamble without research. (That's not smart anyway.) And this happened a lot throughout Shippuden with the help of polls, (most popular female character for example which was a huge one) collecting data and doing thorough quantitative research to predict a future and hopefully spot a trend. Hence the existence of 'Boruto'.

So what do you think? How genuine is 'Boruto' anyway?

(Having done research doesn't mean automatic success.. as we are the built-in fanbase.)

This also is happening as I write this post. (Though the current poll seems highly busted as the cult found a way to vote multiple times a day.)

You may constantly hear people say "Boruto is only made for profit" and that in the end is true, yet there is more to it. I hope you can see why. And it is important to understand the underlying intentions in my opinion when it comes to a discussion about something being genuinely Canon. Which is why many people refuse the sequel to be Canon in the first place.

.. Storytelling and building a franchise around the original work (incl. business, marketing, adaptations) are different things.

In all definitions for something to be judged as Canon, as a general rule, official material has to be genuine. Preferably made by the original creators themselves. If it goes against the narrative (the story) or if it doesn't add anything that matches the same narrative as the original source material, then it is non-Canon.

THE ANIME

'Filler lists' for Anime are made by page contributors which you and I can register for too. Despite 'Naruto' finishing in 2017, the most popular lists get updated regularly and not too long ago.

Why you ask? Personal bias and confusion created around its messy sequel 'Boruto'. They've added 'Anime Canon' (it makes no sense) which simply means Filler (non-Canon). Episodes based on novels (every episode after 484) are now marked as 'Manga Canon' and previously were not as there is no Manga nor is it Canon.

Hence, people are bringing up the Canon-question lately. Things in 'Naruto' are being changed in discussion for the sake of its sequel. "If that in 'Boruto' is true then this for 'Naruto' wasn't right either!!" They say. Hello????? Its foundation is being reworked instead of the other way around. And I don't know about you and this has nothing to do with Naruto or Sasuke as characters only, but that's pretty damn sad. (And yes I know, what exists already can never be changed, but this is still a matter of controlling the narrative which I'll explain.)

To produce an animation a lot of people are involved. (Literally hundreds.) Don't take my word for it though, there are plenty of documentaries about the process that you can look for. I also have a few examples from ASO College group Japan. The pics are from their animation course. To understand how a change in narrative (or deliberate control) can happen, it helps to know a bit about the process.

This is just a general overview but all of these are vital for the production of animation. Everyone has their own role but first, before anything there is a planning phase. Someone who schedules and does the finances etc.

The Producer.

Aka Studio Pierrot (and Aniplex) for Naruto (Shippuden) 4 years after the Manga was published. Well, the planning started probably earlier but that’s when the Anime first aired. (2002)

Then, you need a director who will grasp the entire image of the work and control the production to make sure that everything progresses smoothly.

“The director has the right to make the final decision on many aspects of the animation project.”

The narrative of the Manga will always be kept in mind (of course) but this is true!!! Kishimoto is not the director of the Anime. It is not his job. (Although as a Mangaka, you are also a director of your story in the Manga as well.) And at the same time he was still extensively working on the Manga without rest.

For ‘Naruto’ the director was:

Hayato Date

For ‘Naruto Shippuden’ the directors were:

Hayato Date (1 - 479)

(Note: interesting choice to switch director here, no?)

Osamu Kobayashi (480 - 483)

Chiaki Kon (484 - 488)

Toshinori Watanabe (489 - 493)

Masahiko Murata (494 - 500)

‘Naruto’ has 30+ episode directors who are in charge of the individual episodes themselves. ‘Naruto’ Shippuden around 77 (!!).

Only when everything is decided planning-wise, then they start the process. They need someone to fill in all the details and spoken lines.

That’s the amazing work of a screenwriter.

“Even if the work is being adapted from an original Manga or novel,”

“Modifications are almost always needed for producing the animation.”

Of course, a scene needs to be filled as blocks of narratives are missing between panels or even rewritten in order to produce an episode. In the case of 'Naruto' entire fight scenes needed to be choreographed. Dialogue needed to be added in order to compose an entire episode out of a few panels. Entire Seasons of Filler arcs exist. Who do you think wrote all that?

This is relevant because it means that more than 30 people are involved in the process of 'storying content' based on their own judgement of the original Manga. If you ever wondered why some episodes are very much in favor of one narrative and seemingly against the same one in another- this is why as well.

"Can you kill me calmly(/softly)? Sasuke.."

Some things didn't make it into the Anime. Other things changed that modify the context a bit like having the other Shinobi help Naruto during the War by animating all those hands. Or have Naruto show regret after "dying" because he promised Jiraiya he would become Hokage. That changes a lot because in actuality he didn't mind dying with Sasuke, that was his choice. Having him show regret in front of Sasuke would make Sasuke feel guilt, (that's what some people thought) as if he was blaming him for it. That wasn't the case at all, yet, if you haven't read the Manga I can see why you'd think that as it gets brought up in conversation. They completely missed the mark in my opinion. And well, Sasuke's entire confession.. it would've explained a lot for Anime watchers. During VotE2, Sasuke's emotions were dulled compared to the Manga as well as in the panels, he was shouting while punching Naruto.

Then of course there are certain scenes that were glorified and characters which background stories are completely made up. And yet, those episodes are marked as 'Manga Canon' (when it should be 'Mixed Canon/Filler'.)

Which is fine, the point is that the Anime is created by an enormous team. Even the slightest modification changes the narrative and it is inevitable as so much script is added or at points, lost. But arguing for Canon based off of a list is completely pointless for these reasons.

Currently as I write this, 197 - 222 from Shippuden are all marked as 'Manga Canon' except for 213 (Mixed Canon/Filler) and I don't think it was that way(?), which is perfect because I want to talk about that one and 212.

The story at this point is Sakura running after Sasuke and Kiba told her where he is. She knocks out her comrades whom she asked for help, leaves them to die in the middle of a path in enemy territory so she can go after Sasuke herself and thinks she can kill him with a useless poisoned kunai even though he is immune to it. (Confirmed by Kakashi.) Now, please take note of the image that the OP called 'lovers' is painting ↩

Ah yes the love-triangle. Except, no one is paying Sakura any attention. The OP/ED’s have their own directors btw.

In this arc, both Naruto and Sakura set their own resolve in how they are handling their current situation and decide what to do in regard to Sasuke. More importantly how they feel about it. The Anime decided to split up their decision-making into two episodes in order to show you the contrast deliberately. 212 'Sakura's Resolve' (Manga Canon?) for Sakura, and 213 'Lost Bonds' (Mixed Canon/Filler'?) for Naruto.

First, Sakura deceived, hurt and manipulated (yes, she did, your meta's defending this don't make sense) the people around her so she could run off on her own. Naruto sneaked off without Yamato knowing, although he got annoyed, his little white lie saying he "slept" didn't hurt anyone. In fact, if he wasn't on time Sakura would've died. They both got 2 panels in the Manga running towards the bridge where Sasuke is.

In the Anime however majority of ep 212 shows Sakura running while we hear her thoughts about the matter. The same for Naruto in ep 213 although he is in despair while lying in bed first which is prolonged too.

They add scenes of Sakura as a child where she tells other kids, including Ino that she picked Sasuke to be her crush. For Naruto it is scenes of him picking Sasuke to be his rival.

We see a ton of "Team" 7 flashbacks while we hear their thoughts. Sakura asks herself when she fell in love with Sasuke, that being teammates didn’t change her, how she was “so hopelessly in love with the cool Sasuke..” as we see some scenes of her staring at him:

.. yada, yada..

As for Naruto, he says the reason he picked Sasuke to be his rival is because he was so different from himself (as Sasuke was so good at everything at the time and Naruto wasn’t) he wanted to become like Sasuke. (He confessed this in Canon.) Naruto explains that Sasuke was always one step ahead of him and that the reason why he trained so hard was because he wanted to catch up to him. He’s his strength. (Do you see where this is going? Do you already notice the insane contrast with the previous episode and how it feels?) Instead of Sakura's shallow thoughts and selfish love they show Sasuke acknowledging Naruto which is also Canon (Chunin Exam). Something he realized he wanted since Chapter 3.

“It was the first time Sasuke acknowledged me as an equal.” he says.

Then, in Sakura's episode she reflects upon how she never gave a thought to who Sasuke really was “behind that pensive face” and when she realized “the shadow he carried” it was too late. Thus, Sakura gives up on Sasuke. (But that is Canon.) She also goes on about Naruto knowing more than her and her trying to catch up with them but that Sasuke isn’t Sasuke anymore. Her thoughts here, although not in the Manga word for word in the same Chapter, still match Canon. She doesn't know anything about Sasuke and Kishimoto has her confess this again after the war, that all she could do was cry.

Naruto’s thoughts, confessions are actually also in the Manga and he repeats them later in the scene which is under the bridge both in the Manga and the Anime.

Naruto reflects upon what he knows and came to learn. Then Sai is shown (who’s character is used also to help readers/viewers answer questions about Kishimoto’s version of “bonds”), as he says that both Naruto and Sakura must have a reason to pursue Sasuke so desperately even though he doesn’t understand it all that clearly yet. Because he doesn't. This to emphasize the point of the episodes.

While Sakura had set her resolve to kill Sasuke by herself, Naruto is still in despair about the entire situation and previous events. He mulls over his bond with Sasuke (this extension of the pining isn’t in the Manga) while we see some more flashbacks (Retrieval Arc, Canon). He accepts that at the time he didn’t understand Sasuke as he thinks over his words during VotE1 while they show scenes that are in the Manga:

We get to see more flashbacks from characters who press Naruto about his bond with Sasuke as they all tell him to give up on him. As they tell him to focus on his goals to become Hokage which can't include Sasuke and that he's a fool that should become wiser if he wants to survive as a Ninja. As not only the whole world gives up on Sasuke and Naruto's faith in Sasuke, even Sakura who supposedly loves him so much says that he's is too far beyond their reach... Yet she comes to realize after Naruto’s speech under the bridge that it is only Naruto that is able to reach Sasuke, that only Naruto never gave up on him and that her resolve to kill Sasuke in comparison to Naruto who wants to bear Sasuke's hatred and die with him.. is not only weak- they made it pretty clear how irrelevant she is to him. As she says herself: She's the one not able to reach him, but Naruto can. And she said this before 'Sasuke's retrieval Arc' too.

Conclusion:

Naruto already said he'd rather be a fool his whole life.

So, the Anime tells it slightly differently than the Manga, neither episodes are entirely 'Manga Canon' and don't follow the original structure. However it is all based on Canon, so how would you judge this? There is a reason why I bring this up.

It would almost be impossible for an Anime to be completely 'Manga Canon' because your Anime would be really short yet what you can do is be genuine and stay true to the narrative. Which is what happened here. So why is everyone simply accepting how every episode is marked by a random person anyway? Why are some episodes marked differently when it's the same? That list is biased as hell.

For that reason I'm very selective about episodes being Canon or not. Some scenes within an episode are, some aren't.. But in the end every episode despite Fillers up until Shippuden ep 479 the message didn't change. Hinata and Sakura still were ignored in the end and dudebro's ran to the internet to complain about Naruto and Sasuke's fixation on each other. And so for me it doesn't really matter much.

And also, I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't mind a Naruto remake. If they could do it well at least and follow the Manga completely without so many flashbacks and leave out all the fillers? Make it like the bingewatch-Anime's like they make these days? It's just that I don't have a lot of faith in it. But if they could with a non-bias director? (At least one that understands the Manga well.) I'd love to see it.

MOVIES

For the same reasons I don’t consider the movies Canon. Not even if Kishimoto worked on them. So many people work on these movies even at the planning stage alone and then hundreds including the animation, voice acting, production and music... Plastering Kishimoto’s name on it and saying “he worked on it” doesn’t really say much tbf.

The only exception is ‘Boruto the Movie’ (if you count that in the first place), because Kishimoto was very vocal about it being his personal project. He did not only write the story, but also did the screenplay. (!) Which is very different from vaguely saying "..he was involved in the writing." And it shows because the ‘Boruto’ Anime, with their weird shipping-agenda, re-did the scenes to make them look less gay. Which is insulting tbh.

And no, 'the Last' is not Canon, Genjutsu my ass.

We all know why it was made and if you go back to the meaning of ‘Canon’ (“material derived from the original source that matches the same narrative”) that’s not it. Genjutsu worked on Naruto before he could control Kurama's Chakra. Explain to me why Kurama, whom had a perfect partnership built with Naruto at the end of the series, hated Naruto all of a sudden and refused to break him out of that lame guilt trip other than stupid plot-reasons and you may have a point. I'll wait.

DATABOOKS

Vague, includes subjective commentary by staff and are highly inconsistent. I guess they’re fun to use when discussing powerscaling between characters. You can quickly check a character's Chakra nature or profile which is useful. For things like that I guess they can be helpful.

For other data though.. why not use the Manga? All the data is in there already. While it is true that the books use the Manga as a source and it is nice to know their birthdays, the commentary includes words that literally don’t make sense. Temari can “blow away the Universe” (subjective) and Sakura sees Naruto as “a troublesome guy that courts her insistently but only wants the best for him and never doubted him.” (wrong) Hinata is described as a “pure white lily whose feelings of love reach towards the future in place of her resolve” (my god). There is a reason why people use these Databooks so insistently while ignoring the Manga. It is glorified and untrue.

Therefore, sure they may be fun to have (I guess) because they’re meant to show you a summarized overview of a character through spiced up vocabulary like they’re selling them to you, but that’s why Databooks can’t be Canon.

INTERVIEWS

You have years worth of story and a little interview is what should invalidate or support that entirely? Everyone has their own bias/characters after all. Characters that Kishimoto openly mocks. Kishimoto's earlier interviews seem very genuine and he goes in-depth about his story and how he’s thinking about ending it too. As early as 2006.

He leaves little stories about his life in-between Manga Chapters and they're enjoyable to read. Some interviews are also in his art-books. But around the time they started to press him about ships in the middle of Shippuden? He stumbles around words, says contradicting things, constantly mentions feeling pressured and starts hiding. I think it is clear why this happened. But that's why I try not to use them in arguments because it is easy to counter his words with his own damn words said in another interview :')!

I do use his interviews when it comes to his art-form/writing because I, as an aspiring writer, love to take inspiration from him. But no, interviews are not Canon as Kishimoto himself, has been too contradicting. Which is why I don’t use them if possible, not even in SNS’s favor.

Of course, this applies to VA's etc- too.

NOVELS

None of the novels from the Naruto franchise (though maybe Itachi Shinden? Not sure) are truly made to add something new that was in character. Truthfully I haven’t read them all but novels are non-Canon. Yes, no matter what label they give them in order to fool you into getting interested in its dumb sequel. This never used to be a question in the first place. Not like this anyway. The only fandom that is questioning this is.. *drumroll please* the Naruto/SS/Boruto-fandom. Wow, I wonder why. Are you surprised? Are you questioning this? Ok. Google something vaguely like "are novels canon?" and see what comes up. Ikr? And you didn't even mention 'Naruto'. And I know, I'm sure there are plenty of people saying the novels are Canon nowadays, hence this post. And hence the changes in the Filler-lists.

There is one I have read in its entirety though, the one that made that all happen, which author (mostly known for the Retsuden series) made sure to note it is in fact, NON-Canon.

And this is probably the only thing I'll agree on with Esaka.

These aren't Esaka’s only tweets claiming the novels to be her own. As in: singular. Or her own interpretation/story/not an extension of the original Manga. What people don’t understand is that plastering Kishimoto’s name on a novel as “by Masashi Kishimoto” is a marketing ploy because it sells well. It makes 'Boruto' and in this case a ship that has no development more legit despite still having no development.

It makes us talk about it more. Joke's on me. I'm aware thanks.

Because they know that people do care about things being Canon even if people make posts about them not caring about things being Canon or not. Wdym oxymoron. Showing off the Mangaka's name means the story (the original Manga) is by Kishimoto not the story within the novel but they don’t have to specify that on a cover. Why? Because they CO-OWN the licensing. They hired Esaka who got into 'Naruto' only a year before writing her fantasy novel. He didn’t sit next to her to write her trash garbage (anti-)fanfic. (Spoiler). Why is that so hard to understand?

Check WSJ, 27th issue if you must, “she (Esaka) returns” after having written Sasuke Shinden and Kakashi Retsuden.

These novels are simply made to create more income for the company and the quickest way to do so is by picking a target audience and satiate their needs. Kishimoto mentioned he had no clue how to get SS together as Sasuke only has rejected her and had no reason to love her (Canon) and so they hire a SS-shipper to write that story.

"So?" I hear you say. "He couldn't think of anything, so they hire someone else, what's the big deal."

Oh. glad you asked. Well for one, we already had 'Gaiden' where Kishimoto made the dynamic between the characters as adults pretty clear. Secondly, this novel was a response to 'Gaiden' and went directly against the entire narrative including the original source almost as if to debunk what was already there. Like she was saying that Kishimoto was wrong about everything and that her ship is sailing strong regardless while taking his scenes AND dialogue used between Naruto and Sasuke but then using them for SS. This, because Esaka seemed a little bitter about it. So therefore already, 'Retsuden' can't be Canon no matter what. Thirdly, she is a well-known Naruto and Hinata hater who openly likes tweets mocking them and supports the idea that Naruto is a third wheel who is not really that important to Sasuke. Engaging in such (anti-)fandom behavior as a "professional author" hired by the franchise and holding quite the influence for your sub-fandom is just disrespectful. She agrees with fans who beg for official smut novels and art from her and Kishimoto and I just don't think she should is all. (This, and don't laugh, is also marketing research, she can, if the company can profit from it, actually make it happen. Because it already did with the adaptations. But doing so with this type of behavior, doesn't mean the narrative-change is Canon.)

Also, Kishimoto drew the cover but didn't even design it himself. He got the assignment by email. That's how much he was involved. Kenji Takahashi from the design company ‘Terra Engine’ is in charge of the designs and JJ-books interviewed them about it in 2019. (S)

I might one day make a short summary of a long post I made about Retsuden because that one is a mess. I don't encourage you to read it. I do have to say, if you think Sasuke with 2 arms, or Avatar-filter screenshots are bad, from what I've seen, those adaptations are 1000000x better than the novel 😂💀 and that's saying a lot.

Reflections and headcanons on Wednesday and Tyler By a lover of enemies to lovers

I'm starting with this thing of putting my reflections on Tumblr about series and the truth is I'm liking it, so here comes a reflection that nobody asked for about the series Wednesday and Tyler.

This is not my native language, so if there are any mistakes I'm really sorry.

I'm a big fan of the literary cliche of enemies to lovers, and it makes me a little sad that this one has such a bad reputation for teen series that misuse this kind of plots giving them a toxic tinge, when in my opinion a good enemies to lovers doesn't mean that. For me, a good enemies to lovers has to involve actions that make the characters hate, loathe, and even want to kill each other and then, after a good plot, character development, and being held accountable for their bad actions, end in a well-structured and logical romance. These are the most exciting plots in my opinion.

This is why I see potential in this ship because both Tyler (Tyler from the last chapter specifically) and Wednesday could have an interesting dynamic.

Tyler is a Hyde, who from the little information we've heard are artistic and vengeful people by nature, whose true nature emerges after a traumatic event, and they begin a master and slave dynamic with their liberator.

This monster intrigues me too much, because it makes me theorize several things. First, was Tyler's personality always hidden behind the affable Tyler, or did he just start having these psychopathic behaviors after being freed? Did he always have these tendencies but, learned to camouflage them? His mother is described as a nice woman, who began to change after her postpartum depression, and it's not explained (or I don't remember) very well how she passed away Suicide? Natural death? Her character intrigues me a lot and I can't stop creating headcanon about her.

I imagine this monster is based on Dr. Jekyll, but in a looser version. I like to think that the Hyde's come from a distant branch of Mr. Hyde, that either his offspring managed to mutate, or just decided to gestate more people like him, and for some reason these started to mutate. Yes, I've taken a guess at where the Hyde's came from and created this crazy Headcanon.

Back to the point, Tyler most likely knew there was something different about him, but didn't know what until Marylin decided to unlock his true nature. I remember them saying that Tyler's mother was diagnosed as bipolar, or something similar. So having dual personalities is ruled out for me, and I would focus more on that they both started to fluctuate between different emotions, more negative than positive, and started to develop psychotic behaviors, which they associated with bipolar.

In Tyler's case I don't see that so much, as in my opinion he has more sociopathic, or psychopathic behaviors, as he has just discovered that killing gives him great pleasure, and he is very good at manipulating people. Tyler is not a good person, from a more normal perspective, but considering how the environment of the series works it's not such a terrible thing.

People often say that this shipp between Tyler and Wednesday is toxic because he's a murderer, but the environment of the series, and specifically that of the Addams family doesn't consider being a serial killer a bad thing per se.

Wednesday herself is a girl with sadistic traits, who enjoys torture, and it is something she likes to practice, in fact it is a way she has of showing affection to people, like her brother. In addition, she herself comments that her personality is toxic, and that she would hate it if her record showed that the piranha event proved that she failed in her assassination attempt. That family has a toxic dynamic that they show affection for, and it's totally normalized. That's the fun thing about the Addams family, watching them show their affection through sadism.

That said, I always thought Wednesday would end up with a sadistic monster, or a psychopath, because she loves those kinds of relationships. And I think people in the series aren't able to see that nature of the character, or underestimate her too much. Because let's be honest are people really of the opinion that she would be Tyler's victim? Pls, those two would have a most interesting and challenging relationship of which Wednesday would end up victorious every time. I feel like it would be a good relationship of like minds looking for challenge, after challenge, and challenges. Also, that the Hyde's must have masters, makes that dynamic could be even more entertaining.

And let's move on to the redemption issue, well yes, to have a good enemies to lovers you need good character redemption because otherwise this dynamic doesn't work. Tyler went through lines like attacking Wednesday's two friends, or even attacking cosa, leaving her very hurt. That's something our little sadist wouldn't forgive so easily, because she's many things, but it's been made clear to us in the series that when she creates a bond with someone she's going to defend it to the end.

Wouldn't it be interesting to see how he and Wednesday along with their friends have to fight against a common enemy? To see how no one trusts him for being a killer, both of monsters and humans, and for having manipulated them all (except Xavier, who always knew his true nature, and with whom I also think he could have an interesting dynamic. Well let's face it, sadistic Tyler gives a lot of play in everything) The more difficult the objective, the more interesting I find how they can develop the characters.

In conclusion, I think people see this ship from a ''normie'' perspective, where, obviously in our society, murder is bad and never salvageable. But in a universe where there is a school of monsters, some of whom have psychopathic tendencies, or who don't see a sadistic reality as bad, we can't implement our moral canons.

I love Wednesday's ship with Enid. Because yes, the cliché, that opposites attract, is also one of my favorites. But my sadistic side sees more possibilities in Tyler than in other characters. Although I have to say, a Wednesday without a partner would make more sense to me too. But hey, I'm a romantic girl.

Oh, and my take on did Tyler love Wednesday? I'm going to be 100% honest, I reckon there's more chance that he didn't, than that he did. In the end Tyler was manipulating the situation at his whim, so we can't be 100% sure, because we don't know how strong the bond of master and hyde is, I mean is the bond strong enough to overshadow the hyde's feelings? Does it completely override the hyde's compression to serve? Or can he think for himself enough to be able to fall in love? I feel like in some parts of the series he comes across as sincere, like when he sees Wednesday come down in her black dress.

But honestly that doesn't seem like a defining thing to me. We're used to the two main characters falling in love at the same time, but it's more fun to see how this comes up over the course of the seasons.

Well, after all my headcanon I've created in my head, and that no one was offended at any point, because after my many travels in fandoms, I know that shipp is something people kill for and tend to get very upset about. But I like to think about possible plots that I would like to see, and if I don't like it, I'm sorry.

Thank you and I probably will I know I’m not there in the series yet I’m just on book one but I looked at the character bio’s and 😂 Azriel is probably gonna be my favorite.

Also Avarak is fiiine so there’s no problem 😂 I was thinking about pre-reform but then I thought of him being brought back to present time like deep space nine time and the only person who can get him to be reasonable is the reader. He doesn’t want to get a check up by the medical officers and she crosses her arms and taps her foot at him so her and Avarak end up in a stare off until she sighs and says she just wants to make sure he is healthy because she cares so he scowls but allows the medic to come close briefly. Then he doesn’t want anything on him much less a universal translator implant behind his ear and when logic doesn’t work to convince him and decides he won’t even listen when it’s mentioned she decides to find other ways to convince him like during sex in the middle of whispering something into his ear she will switch to English and if he wants to know what she said then maybe he should consider a translator. Not to mention the conflict with modern Vulcans he understands some logic like in strategy but where’s the passion, Vulcans (are to him) were warriors they’ve forgotten who they were. He also doesn’t like how pushy they are about their beliefs or the concept for him that they hide behind a mask of neutrality. Modern Vulcans trying to force him to be what they want him to be honestly reminds him of rich patrons trying to buy him especially politically in the coliseum.

He was fine with romulans only briefly but now says “they are akin to Le-matya slinking through the tall grass-” (I headcanon that Le-matya will mimic sounds like tigers mimic the sound of deer, monkeys, cows, and babies to lure in prey) “-you may think you hear a friend but it’s the sound of your imminent death”. While I think pre-reform Vulcans like modern romulans are sneaky and treacherous I feel pre-reform Vulcan had like some sort of code of honor it left no room for mercy and allowed brutality but there were certain things you just didn’t do like go out of your way to actively frame someone, if you wanted them gone you simply killed them or exposed their schemes.

Hilariously enough I feel like Avarak would like Klingons and Andorians the best but only certain ones like Martok or Shran.

Avarak tolerates humans at best and in some ways they remind him of Vulcans but his respect is hard earned through feats. He does have a few humans that have earned his respect like Sisko, his human, and O’Brian. However he loves his human who he is convinced is the best of them all. She makes him soft but he won’t admit it, he has a reputation to uphold.

Respects the jemhadar a good deal at first but pities them the more over all when he learns of their origins.

Avarak just...yes. I love him. Very much. 1000/10 would snuggle just to hear him purr. (Yes, I firmly believe Vulcans/Romulans purr when they're content and I will hear no arguments.)

Omg I think Jorik would be really intrigued by him, both scientifically and personally. He'd definitely want to get to know him...perhaps ask him questions and gauge his reactions to emotional-inducing stimuli... Also, since Jorik is a short mans, he'd be constantly looking up at him both impressed and intimidated. (In a good way, of course.)

and, well, if he still wanted to kiss davey more than sarah after a couple months, then that was his problem.

00. the fool : what are your muse’s thoughts on new beginnings ? does it frighten them or excite them ?

Beth is all for new beginnings so long as her family and loved ones are there to begin with her. She doesn't want a life where she has to leave her family behind unless there is no other choice (meaning they're all dead, etc.) It has the tendency to excite her because new things are exciting, but it also frightens her because it's so unknown to be going into something she's unfamiliar with.

01. the magician : how does your muse feel about fate ? do they believe they can change their own destiny ?

Beth believes that some things (like meeting people that are meant to be in your life) are fate, but the circumstances are not set in stone.

02. the high priestess : how does your muse make decisions ? do they trust their instinct or would they rather trust their heart / their logic ?

Beth is bad about trusting her heart before trusting her head. It has tendency to go either way, but it doesn't change how she makes decisions. She'll always follow her heart.

03. the empress : does your muse have parental / nurturing figures in their life ? how do they impact them ?

Beth was close to her father and after he died, she didn't allow anyone else to fill that role for her. She instead nurtures friendships with older people, but they'll never be someone she puts high on a pedestal like she had both of her parents before their deaths.

04. the emperor : how much respect does your muse have for authority ? why is this ?

Beth is very respectful of those in authority. She had been taught that in as a child growing up in a Christian household. She absolutely respects people that make the rules and set the boundaries until they give her a reason not to.

05. the hierophant : what are your muse’s morals / ethics ? do they follow their moral code strictly ?

Beth values honesty, respect, compassion, loyalty, generosity,and fairness in high regard. She will try her heardest to live by those things as well. She's human so she'll make mistakes as human beings do.

06. the lovers : how important are relationships to your muse ? do they value having a significant other ?

Beth values all the relationships that she builds. She loves her friends and treats them as if they are blood family. She wants people to love and appreciate her so she gives that to them as well. She wants to have a significant other who will be as good to her as she will be to them, but she's okay being alone as well. She doesn't need someone to be content. Does she want someone? Yes, but that's only human nature to want/need that kind of intimate companionship.

07. the chariot : how much does your muse care about winning ? are they a sore loser ?

Beth doesn't care about winning. She just loves the thrill of being able to play. She's absolutely not a sore loser and is happy for the one(s) who do win.

08. strength : how does your muse use their energy ? do they tend to work towards their goals steadily or in bursts ?

Beth grew up on a working farm. She does better having a routine so she will use her energy to steadily work toward whatever goal that she has set before her. She's hard working.

09. the hermit : how introspective is your muse ? how often do they self - reflect ?

Beth is the queen of self-reflection. It's what fuels her love for writing songs and poetry. It's how she works things out for herself.

10. the wheel of fortune : how well / badly does your muse take setbacks on their goals ?

Beth will always rework her goals and give herself a new one to meet when she encounters delays and setbacks. She's not a quitter so giving up up isn't an option.

11. justice : does your muse find it easy to be impartial in emotional situations ?

Beth is not impartial at all when she's emotional. She's had many regrets when making decisions or saying things to someone when she's emotional. Maggie knows this and tries to wait until she's had time to adjust to let her make decisions that will affect/effect her future.

12. the hanged man : how open is your muse to new opportunities ? do they constantly look for them or do they simply take whatever comes their way ?

Beth doesn't look for new opportunities. She really just takes life as it comes and that's done well for her in the past. She likes it that way.

13. death : is there anything in your muse’s life that they should be letting go of ?

Beth needs to let go of the regrets she has of being too weak to do anything to save others and protect herself better in the past. She also struggles with the regrets of not saying goodbye to those she cared about that have passed away.

14. temperance : does your muse make plans ? how impulsive are they ? has this gotten them into good / bad situations and how have they dealt with them?

Beth prefers to make plans, but she knows that most of the time they're not always able to make plans. She's not impulsive unless her emotions are high. During those times, she's gotten into some not-so-good situations with people (strangers, too). She tries to learn from them and grow.

15. the devil : is your muse addicted to any substances ? is there anything that could possibly make them quit ?

Beth is not addicted to any substances. She knows how they destroy people and lives and she has no desire to destroy herself or anyone else around her.

16. the tower : what event drastically changed your muse’s life ? do they resent that event or are they glad of it ?

The first drastic event to change her life was the death of her mother, then the massacre at the barn when she lost her once again. She's grateful for the event at the barn because it opened her eyes to what was really happening. Her father's beheading changed her in ways that she's not sure she'll ever fully get over. She sees it still in her nightmares.

17. the star : what does your muse take inner comfort in knowing ? what guides your muse ?

Beth is guided by the notion that she'll see all of those that she loves and has lost when she dies. She truly believes that they'll be reunited in heaven and that keeps her moving forward.

18. the moon : what does your muse long for ? is it a realistic desire ?

Beth longs for more musically inclined people to share her love of music with. She feels it's realistic enough if she teacher others to love music the way she does.

19. the sun : in general, how optimistic is your muse ? does your muse appreciate the small things in life ?

Beth appreciates the small things because she sees how much they truly mean to people over the larger things in life. She is definitely an optimist. It's the only way she can accept things as they have been after the Outbreak.

20. judgement : is your muse forgiving of themselves ? how about of others who wrong them ?

Beth isn't as quick to forgive herself as she is to forgive others. She will always be harder on herself than she is on others.

21. the world : is there one thing in life that your muse must accomplish ? what will they do when they complete that goal ?

The only thing Beth wants to accomplish in life is to leave the world and people and places better than she found it. She'll be able to die happily. Hopefully at an old, old age.

i love the way that you write roche ; i already liked him a lot from the game but i did feel like they didn't give him as much depth as i woulda liked to have seen (like all the secondary characters rip) - BUT, that's why i'm so thankful for you - because you GIVE him that depth, the explanation to his chaos & attitude. i find myself nodding along with all of your headcanons or sitting stunned at the thought behind them. & writing wise, urgh- i just love the way you write. your words flow so effortlessly and you can tell how much roche means to you by the way you write his dialogue and have him behave / act. he feels like a human, a messed-up human. but a human. i just appreciate everything you do much - especially for a lil character like roche. it's really special & i'm very thankful to see it on my dash. ( also, YOU yourself are lovely & i am FOREVER in awe of your art. you're a solid 10/10 keep being amazing~ )

Oh, Han... there's just so much to unpack here I don't even know where to start tbh. ;o;

But yes, in all fairness, Roche means a great deal to me, for a variety of reasons, most of which I will spare the dashboard, but mostly because I feel like my love of this daft biker has kind of... guided me through a truly terrible time I've had lately. Life this past 13 months has certainly not been easy, and though I was gently encouraged to pick Roche up as a muse for someone else... I found myself utterly enamoured by him. Flaws and all.

Thing with Roche is that I can go in any direction I want without much risk of breaking character. Like, logical thought processes, the chaos and insanity and just his general loopiness all tied together with a strong sense of morality and honour all kind of fits into this tight little powder keg of utter nonsense, and having him flit from one demeanour into another is so much fun to write and explore. All the dynamics, I love them!

I get picked on sometimes, by people who know me IRL for my unadulterated passion for this guy, this background nonsensical meme who looks like he belongs in a different game, but I can't say I truly care that much. Not when writing for him, developing his character and drawing dumb pictures has helped me deal with the absolute DUMPSTER FIRE that has been life in general (it's getting better now, so please don't worry lol!) He's helped me make new friends and connections even outside of the RPC but within, he reignited my love for RP as a whole. So... yeah. I love Roche, I love him and his fictional ass a whole lot!

It makes me so unreasonably happy that you enjoy my writing, man. Like, you're... one of the BEST there is to offer in the FFRPC so being given the chance to write along side you is pretty stellar for a nobody like me, yeah? Just, I don't really have the words to hand right now how all of this made me feel.

A random headcanon: his full name is Baker Baker. Also because we have no information on what happened after his parents died I'm choosing to believe he just raised himself from when he was a baby. I'd seriously like a genuine explanation of what happened there by the way because we do know his mother died and father left when he was a really small child and i don't think he would've been able to take care of himself. Who raised him? Does he have step parents? A somewhat sweet explanation for this I'd like to believe in is the witch realized he wouldn't survive on his own so she put a spell on him that keeps him alive until he's old enough to take care of himself. Maybe. We can never know.

General Opinion over said character: he is everything to me you do NOT understand. He along with Marvin are the definition of the word blorbo and poor little meow meow in my mind. Everything about him. His daddy issues. The green green hat. The fact that he can't find the cheese cloth. The way he drank the respect women juice while in the woods. The fact that he actually felt bad for Jack after his wife tricked him. His little dance when he got the money. No more. "Maybe i just wasn't meant to have children" while surrounded by children he just accidentally adopted. The fact that he's canonically left handed in the original thank you Chip Zien for being born with the same dominant hand as me. I'm talking too much about this man.

The headcanon itself came from an early trivender fanfiction which wasn't good and i was trying to build up something bigger than I have the motivation for, my bad, it doesn't matter. The one thing I'm glad I did was coming up with Trina naming her Lavender because she didn't have a chosen name yet. Considering lavenders are already my favorite flower and that lavender is considered the gayest color (lmao) she's just Lavender to me now. I'm obsessed

General Opinion over said character: if i were to summarize her in short it'd be "girlboss with a darkside". Because that's what she is. I still can't believe she died.

okay so i just spent a really long time looking though all my old notebooks in order to find my notes on coming up with names for my dragon age characters, because i thought that remembering the logic i used for them might help me come up with a rook's name that would be more natural for my world state. and in the process i discovered several things:

a. it is NOT easy to find something specific like that in my notebooks. i kind of remembered how the page where the names were written on looked (i was wrong), but i didn't remember the exact year. and for context i have been leading some kind of a diary/journal since literally the day i learnt how to write. and i still have all of them. yes, after high school diaries mostly transformed into bullet journals, and after i dropped out those transformed into notebooks for anything and everything with no system other than dates, but i never stopped actually having a notebook. which is also where most of my creative drafts are

b. i very rarely wrote years on my notebooks. dates always. years - FOR SOME REASON NOT

c. i have two places where i keep my journals, apparently. and i didn't sort them chronologically very well

d. there are A LOT of notes on some creative ideas i had in the past that i have no idea what they mean now at all. what if i was cooking back then......

this is where i slowly started to find my da notes, thank god. read more to spare your dashes, but by god i'm noting my discoveries down

so first of all i discovered, which is something i forgot about, that i was trying to come up with a full name for ruth, my warden. because at some point i thought that ruth, the name i originally came up with, didn't sound very elven, so it had to be a nickname for an actual full name

well, i didn't exactly come up with ruth. i guess it wasn't long after i read fried green tomatoes, and when the game asked me for a name, i probably looked back at my bookshelf, thought, HEY the old time lesbians book! and named my warden after one of them lesbians from the book

so my notes on her full name are....

first of all, i looked at this and was like, what was the fucking reference. i had no idea. didn't feel like some dragon age inspired elven language, but i filed this for later research, cause i still haven't found others' names

second of all, i don't know how i feel about this "final" full name. not surprised i forgot i even had this thought process. but let's just say this is non canon. and besides, considering she's trans, that would make even more sense that her name is just ruth. that is her name that she chose and it doesn't matter much if she had any other names before that. that is all left behind, if not in her clan's memory, than in that cursed mirror

moving on i found the pages where i was making my hawke's name

so i just, while writing this, realised what happened. i think back then i was still mad you can only play as a human in da2 (listen i was yet to find out da2 is one of the best games ever made) so i was trying to headcanon my hawke as a half elf and make him a name that would reference his "elven" name. i don't think it makes any sense, there is not a single elf in amell's family (who i learnt a lot about today, while scrolling da wiki again). but yeah, his elven name was tariam? and that in human was tarjei

i will decree this also non canon. he's just tarjei, it's fine.

then i found the notes on my first, now also non canon, inquisitor, lavellan, who things didn't work out with

i do think corriro is a fun name tho, i'm happy with it

but once again, i used the same mysterious reference for elven names. what the fuck is this. anyway, i tried googling what i might have looked for back then, and i think i found exactly that. it was a pikabu (russian reddit basically) post from 10 years ago with a guide on how to make elven names, where op gave a link to their source, which was a post from 2010 made on one of them text roleplaying forums that i used to love so much (i mean i never rped on this one specifically but still the nostalgia)

overall, idk if this will help me come up with rook's name. especially since rook would be growing up in rivain, not in ferelden, and not with dalish elves. BUT fun journey

Idk) and after the fall, they hadn’t seen them until the exchange program, where Angel!MC was one of the exchange students and they’re reunited?

Or this same thing but when they’re reunited, MC falls for another one of the brothers?

“We’ll always be together, right?” you asked, clasping his hand softly.

“Of course,” Lucifer replied with ease, flipping your hand over so he could hold it for real. “Nothing in this world could ever take me from you.”

Oh, how those words played in his head when he fell, your tear-stained face the last thing he had seen. Your hand, reaching futilely for him, even as you were pulled back by several other angels.

He still thought of you, though it had been years since anyone dared mention your name. Diavolo and Barbatos, unaware of your existence, and his brothers, who now knew better.

But he didn’t forget you. Couldn’t forget you. You haunted his dreams, your airy laugh echoing in his mind when he awoke, inescapable. Every line of your face was still sharp in his mind, not dulled, like many of the other memories from the Angel Realm.

Once, he had thought time closed all wounds, but now, he knew better.

When Diavolo had put him in charge of picking out exchange students, he couldn’t stop himself from paging through all of the applications from the Angel Realm, looking for your name. It wasn’t there, and Lucifer wasn’t exactly surprised. You never had been big on politics, and who knew if you still missed him the way he did you. It had been hundreds of years.

Despite the very logical and understandable reasons, he couldn’t help but be upset. Did you not remember him? Did your promise of never leaving his side truly mean nothing now that he was no longer graced?

Lucifer felt a headache building behind his eyes and looked at the stack of applications from the Human Realm he still had to go through. The job was a chore, and he wished to be done with it.

Perhaps he had been more hopeful than he was willing to admit.

A gust of wind scattered the papers on his desk and he reached over to grab one, not even bothering to look at the name as he slid it into the stack of other chosen applicants. Whatever. It was a human anyway, not like they were going to last long here no matter who they were.

Sighing, Lucifer set about collecting the rest of the papers and throwing them in the wastebasket. Diavolo would have to live with his choices, and really, the sooner he finished with this he could turn his attention back to internal affairs, more important ones.

Surveying his office one last time to make sure everything was picked up, Lucifer stood. He would take the chosen applications to Diavolo to look over and then wash his hands of it all until Diavolo needed him again.

Lucifer stood next to Diavolo, on his right, as always. Today was the day they’d be welcoming the exchange students in and he had to be in top form, especially since he’d be welcoming Simeon, who, while wasn’t you, was someone he also missed from the Angel Realm, loathe as he was to admit it.

Besides, he thought to himself, perhaps I can ask him for news of you. Not right away, of course, but still…

Performing his duties as Simeon and Luke were welcomed to R.A.D. was painful. The small glimpse of the familiar palace he used to reside in through the portal was enough to send his mind wandering, even is by all appearances he seemed perfectly focused. Diavolo, of course, seemed to see something was off, but Lucifer ignored the probing look he was sent, smiling pleasantly, impersonally, at the angels.

It took no time at all for the angels to be shuttled off to their new residence, though Simeon managed to nod to Lucifer as he was led out, something Lucifer acknowledged with the slightest nod of his own.

“Are you alright?” Diavolo asked when they were alone once more, asides from Barbatos, of course.

“Ah, yes,” Lucifer said calmly, smoothing his tie down. “I apologize.”

Diavolo’s face softened slightly, and Lucifer couldn’t stop the frown that pulled at the corners of his mouth in response. Despite having been born and raised in the underworld, he was still too full of love, too caring of others. While that made him a good person and leader, it didn’t always make him a great demon.

“Is this about Belphegor?” Diavolo pressed, and Lucifer’s spine straightened.

“Of course not,” he said smoothly, watching as Barbatos’ eyebrows climbed up towards his hairline. Maybe he should have lied; it would have stopped the questions. “Shouldn’t we be getting on with it? We don’t have all day.”

Diavolo gave him one more, deep, searching look, but dropped it. It didn’t take long for everyone to be settled back into their places, him included. Shaking off the thoughts and memories of you and of his time as an angel, Lucifer drew his sin around him like armor, forcing his shoulders down.

Solomon seemed to see right through him, his mischievous gaze giving Lucifer a slimy feeling. Thankfully, the sorcerer was able to make himself comfortable quickly, as it was likely this wasn't his first time in the Devildom.

Only one more, Lucifer told himself. Then you can leave.

“I’m going to begin summoning the last exchange student,” Barbatos intoned, beginning the magic. A swirling portal, the same as all of the others, opened up, and you fell through, not quite managing a graceful landing like everyone else.

Lucifer felt frozen, as he looked down at you. It couldn't be! No, seriously. When he had fallen, you were a favored angel. This human in front of him couldn’t be one and the same.

But, as you looked up at him, eyes gleaming, he knew.

Diavolo went through his little speech and Lucifer only barely managed to deliver his lines. His mind was whirling, and he couldn't look away from you. How were you here? Why were you here?

You stared at him right back, steady. Lucifer could barely contain himself. He wanted to sweep you up in his arms, shake you by the shoulders, get to the bottom of things.

It seemed like an eternity, but eventually, he was tasked with taking you back to the House of Lamentation. He waited for you to gather your things, which you did with haste, your fumbling so far removed from the graceful movements from before that he was thrown into another loop of doubt.

Neither of you spoke until you were out of the R.A.D. building and walking down the street.

“Is it really you?” Lucifer asked, staring straight ahead. “Not some- magic, or trickery?”

“It is,” you said, and your voice, so familiar, made his heart beat faster. “I’ve missed you, Lucifer. So much.”

“Prove it to me,” he challenged, his cocky tone only barely covering up the plea in his voice. “If it’s really you, what promise did we make to one another in the grove by the palace?”

You looked up at him, a little half-smile on your face. “We promised to always be together. And I’ve come here to fulfill that promise.”

Lucifer swallowed, elation singing in his bones. “I’ve missed you too. How are you here? How are you human?”

You sighed, looking up at the dark sky. “I was… displeased with the situation around your fall and the Celestial War. I kicked up enough of a fuss that I was stripped of my grace and sent to live with the humans.” There’s obviously more to the story that you’re not saying, but he won’t pry. For now.

“I was trying to get down here, and I think Micheal knew that,” you continued, “which is why he put me in the human realm. Enough of my grace remained that I did not age nor could I die, so I stayed. In limbo, waiting. When I learned about the exchange program I knew I had finally found my way back to you.”

“You’re foolish,” Lucifer said, but there was no heat. “To get yourself stripped of your holiness for me. I was not- am not worth that.”

Your face twists into a scowl. “It wasn’t just about you,” you explained. “Heaven was just no longer the place for me. There were many things I did not agree with that only got worse when you and your brothers were gone.”

“I see,” Lucifer said. He had had no idea.

“But that’s all in the past,” you insisted. “I’m here now, and you’re here now, and we can begin anew. I mean,” you say, shy for the first time since you had appeared, “if that’d be something you were interested in, of course.”

“How could it not be?” Lucifer asked wryly. “A day hasn’t gone by that I haven’t thought of you. MC, you were the love of my life and I hope that you still are. Though this is all a bit unorthodox-”

“-When have we ever been?” you finished for him, grabbing his hand like you had so long ago. And, just like before, Lucifer held it properly, weaving his fingers between his. He felt off-kilter and unsure, but for the first time in a long while, looked forward to the future.

You were humming under your breath, obviously in good spirits even though there was so much still unknown. Lucifer was never one for being fanciful, nor did he ever think that the ‘reunion’ trope was a particularly poignant one, but maybe he was wrong.

“A lot has changed since we last saw one another,” Lucifer said suddenly, the words bursting out of him. As much as he loved you, so much was different. He had another brother, for crying out loud! “I’m not the same man you fell in love with.”

“And I’m not the same person either,” you replied after a moment. “I don’t expect you to be the same, or for us to be the same, but like I said before I’d be interested in pursuing a relationship despite that. I have faith that I’ll love you, no matter which version of yourself you are, and I’d never fault you for growing and changing, especially with all that has happened.” You laughed. “You probably think I’m being naive, and so what if I am? It’s only the first day I’ve been here. We have a whole year before we truly need to worry.”

There you go again, calming him down when he gets ahead of himself.

“I suppose you’re correct,” Lucifer says, seeing the wrought iron gates to the manor. “As always. Ah, prepare yourself for my brothers. We have a lot to explain.”

“I’m excited to see them all again,” you said lightly. “And to meet the new one. Satan, was it?”

Lucifer jolts, remembering Belphegor. “About that,” he said, “first we may have to take a trip to the attic.”

“Whatever for?” you ask, but already seem prepared to follow him, no questions asked. Diavolo may be mad, and Lucifer would be in a lot of trouble from a bunch of people, but situations change and he thought he was doing the correct thing, so…

“It’s kind of hard to explain.” Sheepishly, he rubbed the back of his neck. “But when you yell at me I promise I’ll deserve it.”

“Okay,” you declared, dubious. “You’re not exactly filling me with confidence here.”

That made him chuckle a little. You were so different, but still you. And oh, how he had craved your presence.

“I really missed you,” he stated again instead of the hundreds of other things he wanted to say. He thought you knew what he meant regardless. The ‘l-word’. The one he had been too hesitant to say, even back when you were both angels. Surely, it was too soon to say it now, even though he felt it in his heart, whatever of it remained.

“And we’ve established I’ve missed you,” you said, a note of humor in your voice. “But thankfully I don’t have to do that anymore.”

“Thankfully indeed,” Lucifer murmured as he prepared himself for the chaos that would come. The chaos that would be completely and undeniably worth it, because now, he had you by his side once more.
