When they finally met back up I kind of wanted Shard to be Sonic's salty ex but also a sweetie pie towards literally everyone else

He doesn't want to fight him anymore, and would gladly help/save him (and brag about it after)-- but he's sick of thinking of/hearing about/having his life revolve around Sonic. What's so great about this guy anyway? He can be a better hero any day of the week.

The urge to mildly antagonize him is probably hard-coded and probably not just him feeling a little jealous and insecure about how much easier being liked seems to be for Sonic than it is for him.

one interesting thing about the solas crestwood catastrophe is that:

if we look at the relationship from solas' perspective, he knows he's already... permanently altered lavellan with his magic, in a way that they didn't consent to/fully understand the ramifications of. oops! that was accidental, and he didn't even know them then, so presumably he manages to get over the guilt enough to have somewhat of a normal relationship afterwards.

but then, let's assume that he did stick to his plan to tell the truth... then he essentially:

altered their physical body with magic.

lied a LOT by omission.

drew them in with friendship/affection before dropping a Huge Moral Burden onto them.

can't REMOVE the magic in his current state, until he gets the orb back.

if the explanation goes badly, and lavellan ends up hating him/disagreeing with his plan, they wouldn't even be able to tell him to fuck off permanently. bc the anchor is still slowly killing them.

if lavellan agrees with his plan in theory, then... they still have to accept the deaths of most people they knew and cared about. which even if they're ok with for the Greater Good™, will horrifically change their personality and ruin their life.

if lavellan agrees to help with the plan, then... they're basically solas' agent afterwards, and will have to personally bloody their hands even more. and the power differential only gets Worse.

so he's... a bit mythal-esque in his approach, by accident, isn't he? RIP! mythal is of course, the Best Of The Evanuris™ and a girlboss, but that's presumably unsettling to him when he realizes it. it seems like he had thought his confession through up to the point of "hm, maybe if i explain it really well, they'll accept me as the dread wolf, and the necessity of my plan? and we'll be together :)" without planning any further steps fhsjsgjf

so then he goes "oh, fuck. nevermind. what if i just stay as solas the Normal Apostate™ a bit longer. but, i need SOME pretext about why we're even here, or what 'the truth' is that i'm telling them. uhhhh... the vallaslin are... removable?" out of reflex.

then that's, once again:

lying, and with the expectation that he'd have to keep lying even longer.

encouraging lavellan to change an integral part of themselves, when they trust him deeply.

which is STILL very mythal-esque, or possibly dread wolf vs his foes type of behaviour, and it's towards someone that he loves! even when he's trying to be solas the Normal Apostate™. incredible. then solas either takes off the vallaslin, and realizes that he's altered lavellan further on false pretenses; or lavellan refuses, and he realizes that he's asked them to change themselves, still on false pretenses. and then he decides that it's Joever and there's no way to remain in the relationship that preserves his ethics. presumably, the fact that he killed felassan for showing 2% of this emotional bias towards mortals, is also weighing on him throughout.

BUT. then he does say afterwards that "everything will be made clear once corypheus is defeated". which is a pretty douchey thing to say if he expects to take the orb, and then for lavellan to like... die in the veilfall immediately? hdjsjfhsf. so to me, that seems like he had an intention to retake the anchor, and then tear down the veil and reveal his identity, and expected lavellan to still be alive afterwards to see it. and then they would no longer be magically attached to him, so at least that would equalize the situation a bit.

but then the orb breaks too! so, he has to slink off with 0 additional clarity to lavellan beyond saying "ough... what we had was real 🥺" before going to kill mythal himself. absolute trainwreck of a breakup.

Best light for streamers without a lot of space.

Amaran is the budget line of video equipment for Aputure. And it is surprisingly solid for the price. You can get knockoff versions of most of their stuff from Neewer or GVM, but if you want something reliable that won't break in a year or two, Amaran is a good medium budget option.

They just released what I am callng the anti-ring light.

The Verge Max.

This is a ring light where they fill in the hole and give you an entire light. You can read a long rant about ring lights here. But the short version is, you don't want one unless you put the camera in the hole and are doing a tight close up of a face.

If you aren't doing a close up of a face (like for a makeup tutorial) then you just have a normal light with a giant hole in it.

You will get no magical benefits from a ring light under any other circumstances.

The reason ring lights are so popular (outside of being a fad), is because they don't take up a lot of space. A lot of people are streaming from their computer desk which is usually up against a wall. And you just don't have a lot of room to set up a proper light with a modifier.

Before now, your best option would be an LED panel (with the hole filled in). This one by Godox is pretty good.

It has a little remote and you can add batteries to make it mobile.

But it is small and in order to get soft light, you have to place it very close to your face or set up two of them. And it might get uncomfortable blasting a small light source into your eyes for long streaming sessions.

This new Amaran light is just as thin as a panel light, but its lighting surface area is like a proper studio light.

And it is round so you will get nice catchlights in your eyeballs (if you care about that).

So you can place it a little farther back or against the wall and distribute the light over a larger area. It won't be as piercing and uncomfortable, and you get flattering soft light.

I realize $260 is an investment. You need to be sure you can make good use of this light. But if you are in cramped quarters and need a proper lighting setup, this is a great option.

Otherwise, if you do have a little space to work with, you can buy the Godox panel (or use any decently bright light you have), and tape a $10 umbrella in front of it.

Don't sleep on umbrellas. They work great. They just spill light all over the place, so you have to be mindful of that.

But I took this photo of Chris with a $10 umbrella.

All you are trying to do is make the light source bigger. You can even put the umbrella on a ring light if you already have one.

Or you can bounce the light off the wall behind your desk. If you have a big white wall, use it as a light source.

The gold standard for video lights is always going to be a COB LED light with a Bowens mount. That last part is important. The mount allows you to attach any light modifier there is.

This Godox is pretty good for an entry level continuous light. I like them as much as Amaran.

And then you can throw an octobox on there at the size of your choice.

It even has a grid to help prevent light spill.

This setup is also great for portrait photography.

The Verge Max comes out in June, but here is a video of it if you have any interest.

Good lighting is a superpower. You can be using a webcam or smartphone and lighting can improve your image much more than just about anything else.

Because I have to socialize mostly through video chats, I have a little LED panel set up near my computer. Makes a pretty big difference when compared to the regular room lights.

I really love this parallel between Gertrude and Jon on humanity (vague tma spoilers)

Gertrude "you were the one so insistent on staying human" Robinson lost everything that makes her human.

Sure, she never became a proper avatar and technically stayed human, but she didn't allow herself to love, to trust, to connect, because every time she did, she'd lose something and someone, so she became cold, she built walls, she took any risk, she'd go as far as she needed to, if it meant success.

It doesn't help that all of her actions lead to other people, servants and avatars to either despise and fear her or hold a great respect towards her. Either way it gets her what she wants.

You could forever argue about what kind of person all of that makes her, yet she was a person. Good, flawed or bad, she was a person and she was human. At least in the most technical most polished way.

But to say she never cared? That would be completely wrong. She held a cold demeanor and a strong confident facade, but deep down she cared.

To speak with such fondness of someone you've never properly interacted with? Is it not human? Yes, Agnes was her anchor, but still. There is something so warm about the way Gertrude talks about her, is curious about her.

To worry about the effects and ethics of your power, to refuse to embrace it, wouldn't that too be human?

And Gerry was probably the last person she genuinely loved and cared for. Gertrude's last tie to humanity, her last anchor and her last reason.

So when he died, when there was nothing left, her tasks, her goals became just some mundane things to take care of. Yes, for the greater good, for the sake of the world, but after you lose everything to care for, to come back to, what's saving the world you already grew so cold towards? Is it really driven by love, dedication, loyalty or connection? Or is it driven by revenge at best, and muscle memory at worst, simply because there is nothing left, but yet another task in your life?

Gertrude, undoubtedly, was human in this very technical, almost artificial way, and she tried her best to remove every ounce of humanity she had, even if she couldn't truly succeed.

On the other hand, Jon stayed so human, it's killing him. Sure, he became an avatar, he stopped being human in a literal sense, but he loves, he cares about people. He has anchors, he has people he mourns, he has people he loves, he has a reason. And that at the same time gives him power and weakens him enormously.

Him choosing to lose his humanity, to wake up, is the most human thing he could do. It's a choice to keep living, to keep fighting, to keep loving. A choice that he would regret over and over and over again as he thinks that he doesn't deserve to exist anymore, that his mere existence causes pain and suffering. And in a way it does.

So when people tell him that he's a monster he believes it. Maybe even more than they do.

It would be so much easier if he was a monster. If all the bad things he's done were driven by some power he was beneath of. If he was, he could just brush them off cause he can't help it, it's in his nature. "Is a thing evil when it simply obeys its own nature? When it embodies its nature?"

The thing is, he's not. He's not evil, he's not a monster, not a vampire, not a doll came to life, not the distortion. He did not come back wrong.

His choice to keep feeding is his own and that horrifies him so much. This choice not to starve, to keep living and to keep enjoying is a very human choice, it is not an instinct. The same way it was his choice to keep reading, to keep being involved. Yes, it's not fair. It's not a fair price for curiousity and it's not a fair price for living. But it's the reality of things.

Do you think he ever regretted setting a person free, even though that could easily kill him? Do you think that he ever regretted setting his foot into that coffin to save someone, who tried to kill him? Do you think he ever regretted choosing to save his loved one over finally getting a chance to kill the man, who ruined his life? Because I sure don't.

All of his mistakes, his sacrifices, all of his choices, all of it was caused by his humanity. Curiosity, love, hatred and fear, but never instinct. And that's what makes him human in all the ways that truly matter.

So when he finds out that there's a chance it all could be just a setup, it scares him. Because he thinks that it strips him of his humanity, of his choices and his whole life.

i will never be over the perfect slow burn of leonardo's deteriorating mental health from s1 to s3 in tmnt 2003

he's a pretty reserved and quiet guy but we still get to see him be a dork in s1 and act like a typical teenager!!! having fun riding his scooter during the blackout with his brothers, getting SO excited over perfecting his split kick, and the background stuff too, like reading a book (and getting interrupted by the battle shell almost running him over in "fallen angel" rip), and eating junk food with his brothers.

but you get further into the series, and a lot of that stuff just kinda... fades away. he'll still mess around and play with his brothers sometimes before the plot starts, but the more obvious dorky teenage stuff sort of stops, and 99% of the time in the background shots in the set-up to the plot, he's training. And it's not even the fun, "i REALLY want to get this move right, hey look guys i did it!!! :3", kind of training like with the split kicks. he's taking it 100% serious, like it's life or death. And well..... I think for him, it definitely feels that way.

I mean, Tales of Leo pretty much shows us what is most important to him. (and i always go kind of bonkers over just how explicit they are in laying out just who exactly Leonardo is and what makes him tick in that single episode. Obviously the show does it at least once for the others too bc it's a kid's show, but once they give us the basics of personality early on, they let the characterization come through more subtly. In comparison, this episode comes late into the season and it kind of feels like them grabbing us and going "are you paying attention? this is important. it will be important.")

we get to see how focused he is, how he's been there to save his brothers when they get into trouble, how they trust him and his judgment, and most importantly from splinter's tale, protecting his family will always outweigh any fear he has. Leonardo is at his bravest when his family needs him. and we get proof of this moments later when he wakes up from his coma ("Leonardo, my son, you must gather all your strength and confront your fear"), he wakes up because he heard his family tell him they needed him.

and I think, pre-series, this protective drive, this responsibility he has gladly put on his shoulders, wouldn't be that much of an issue. Obviously, there were dangers but. Intermittent ones. Ones any of them were fully capable of handling on their own and as kids.

But then the show starts happening and their adventures get more dangerous, more lethal. And the stakes keep getting higher and higher.

And Leo feels this change the most keenly because he feels so responsible for the lives of his family. And, unintentionally, his family ends up reinforcing this belief, inadvertently places expectations on his shoulders, because at least once per season there's some big high stakes fight and everyone looks to Leonardo to pull through and finish things.

And obviously if they knew, if they realized how this might be affecting him, they would say something, do something, but Leo would never tell. He wants to protect them. He's probably happy and proud that they rely on him.

And so the series goes on, with his family none the wiser of what's happening, but, imo, you can see the cracks in the façade.

We know from Return to New York with the way he freezes and has a flashback when fighting the Elite that he most definitely has a little trauma from the Shredder Strikes Back. That he was afraid during that fight, even if he didn't show it. That he might've been scared during other moments in the show but didn't show it because his family needed him.

When he makes a mistake, he's so harsh with himself. In s3, Hunted, Leo steps on a mine and he immediately goes "stupid, stupid, stupid!" at himself. In the recap episode of s2, Raph points out that Leo isn't so perfect considering how he almost believed the Shredder when he tried to get Leo to join him. And unlike in the first episode of s1 where Leo pushes back against Raph's taunts, he just full-on agrees with Raph here. Splinter tries to let him know it's not his fault but he brushes off any comfort or reassurance, because in his mind, he should have been better.

All of his spare time now seems to be spent on training, because he needs to be ready for anything. And on that point, his hypervigilance is through the roof. If there's someone in the shadows, some quiet sound hinting at an attack, it's almost always Leo that notices. I think constantly of the moment in Hunted when Mikey would have been sniped if Leo hadn't noticed the glint of the rifle and got him out of the way. I'm sure what could have been haunts Leo. And it's those small moments, where Leo needed to be ready and able that keeps reinforcing Leo's belief that he has to be on the look-out, has to protect his family, because if he isn't, they will die.

And it just builds and builds and by the time you get to season 4, where Leo is spiraling and isolating himself and lashing out, it feels like it's been a long time coming.

honestly, maybe the producers/directors were going at this strategically because we have to remember that animes and mangas are only mediums to PROMOTE the source material. if they do something different in the anime adaptation, people are bound to express their disappointment and encourage the anime watchers to go for the light novels. if it leads to more sales, then what's a few scrapped lines right? it might even encourage a s3 production in the future. in a way it's a good marketing strat but also like damn </3
