Trials of Apollo animatic wip

Edit: Just realized that things would probably make a lot more sense with the script, so here it is :)

(Keep in mind, this is something I made for a drama project, so a lot of this is whittled down to be comprehensible to people who haven't read ToA- also the reason for the stage directions in the script)

(Music passage 1)

Meg: So, a god again, huh?

Apollo: Indeed, but I will not continue like before. I've learnt from my mortality, and Olympus is… 

Meg: Messed up?

Apollo: Yes, that. 

Meg: Hah, no surprises there. So, what'll you do about, y'know, your dad?

Apollo: I… don't know yet, but what he did… does to me, it isn't right, and neither is what he does to demigods, or… the rest of Olympus, and he cannot be allowed to continue

I broke free on a Saturday morning

I put the pedal to the floor

Headed north on Mills Avenue

And listened to the engine roar

(Music Passage 2)

Meg: So, you've been hanging out with your relatives, huh?

Apollo: My godly siblings, yes. We've not always been kind to one another, but I hope we can be, in the future. You understand.

Meg: Yeah, it's nice to get to know some of my siblings without Nero breathing down our necks

My broken house behind me and good things ahead

A girl named Cathy wants a little of my time

Six cylinders underneath the hood crashing and kicking

Meg: So, a revolution?

Apollo: He cannot be allowed to act without recompense, I cannot chance that he will hurt my family again, not you, or my children, or Artemis or any of my divine siblings

Meg: (sits down) …Or you

Apollo: Or me. 

I played video games in a drunken haze

I was 17 years young

Meg: (getting up, begin slowly walking off) So, what's it you wanted to talk about?

Apollo: …I got Athena on board

Meg: (stops) Oh

Apollo: We're confronting him tomorrow

Meg: Okay… Don't die, dummy

And then Cathy showed up and we hung out

Trading swigs from a bottle all bitter and clean

Locking eyes, holding hands

Twin high maintenance machines

I drove home in the California dusk (Come on stage; take quiver)

I could feel the alcohol inside of me hum (Pause and emotionally prepare)

Pictured the look on my stepfather's face (Open door)

Ready for the bad things to come (Draw arrow; Zeus turns; Fire)

I downshifted as I pulled into the driveway (Lightning thrown; Dodge + Explosion; Another shot)

The motor screaming out stuck in second gear (Shot lands; Lighting thrown; Lightning blocked with arms)

The scene ends badly as you might imagine (Lightning; Lightning)

In a cavalcade of anger and fear (Reach for arrow; Realize the strike is coming, and fall to the ground at “fear”)

There will be feasting (sparks in the corner) and dancing (sparks in the corner) in Jerusalem next year (Tableau as Apollo has his anime power of friendship flashback)

I am gonna make it through this year if it kills me (Get up with great difficulty; Stumble)

The aftermath; reeling from his bittersweet victory in the first half

Apollo: I… I did it… We won… (relieved, scared, tired smile)

Meg: (~Pause of processing~) …You did it, you killed him

Apollo: I… don't know, but… there's time to find out

What is epic the musical? I keep seeing people talk about it but I have no clue pls help

Good question! It's a musical about The Odyssey... kinda? It's never been performed, and I don't think it has a script or anything (yet)? But, still qualifies! It's being written in pieces ("sagas") by a guy named Jorge Rivera-Herrans, aka Jay, aka Mr Jalapeno, aka Jorgy Porgy, etc.... Up until like a month ago, it was incomplete, but the final saga has just been released!! Yippeee!!!

I'm not sure exactly how closely it follows the actual Greek epic it's inpired by, but if you can think of something from the myth, that's probably in Epic, lol. (Yes the name of big greek poems is also the name of the musical >:)

If you'd like to get into it (/nf! ^-^), almost all of the songs have been turned into animatics some way or another, which really helps with following the story- I think the best way to watch all of them at once is here? It's also out on pretty much any music platform you can think of, although again, the story moves pretty fast. I'd recommend finding a friend who's really into it to explain the whole thing song-by-song for the best experience XD

"What is this?"

MEAN GIRLS is a fan-made film adaptation of the Broadway musical by Tina Fey, Jeff Richmond, and Nell Benjamin, based on the 2004 film by Tina Fey.

"Why?

The people behind this project are huge fans of the MEAN GIRLS musical, and we wanted to pay tribute to the show that we love.

"Wait, wasn't there already a MEAN GIRLS musical movie? It released just this year."

Yes, and that's currently my fourth favorite movie of all time. That being said, however, it does make a lot of changes from the musical it's based on, so we wanted to make a version that's a bit closer to the stage musical. This includes restoring songs like 'Stupid With Love' and 'I See Stars' to their original musical versions, as well as bringing back cut songs like 'Where Do You Belong?' and 'More Is Better'.

"So you think you can do better than the 2024 movie?"

Oh, absolutely not, and we're not really trying to. This fanfilm isn't meant to replace the 2024 film or discredit the magnificent work done by everyone involved in its creation. As I mentioned earlier, I absolutely adore that movie. We just wanted to see what a version that resembled the stage musical a bit more could look like. I think the two can co-exist as two different takes on the same source material (with one being a big-budget Hollywood picture and the other being a fan film by a bunch of students).

"Is this just going to be an animated version of the Broadway script then?"

Also no. While the primary inspiration for this film is the Broadway show, we're also bringing in aspects of the original 2004 film, the 2024 film, the West End production, and a few original ideas of our own. This fanfilm is a love letter to every version of the story.

"Wait a minute, your artstyle feels a bit familiar. Aren't you the person behind Beetlejuice & Lydia?"

Yes I am. And don't worry, that fanfilm isn't going anywhere. I know there haven't been many updates lately, but we're working steadily behind the scenes. In fact, we're gearing up for the release of our first voiced animatic of a scene from that movie!

So don't worry, MEAN GIRLS isn't going to replace Beetlejuice & Lydia or anything. The two are gonna be worked on side by side.

"Are you seriously going to try juggling two fanfilms based on Broadway musicals at once?"

Yes and no. Beetlejuice & Lydia is a project I'm leading myself, as I wrote the screenplay and will be directing the movie myself. However, for MEAN GIRLS, partly due to the fact that I'm already taking on another fanfilm, this movie will be co-directed by a very good friend of mine, Cass! (@thetheatergremlin) She is one of the coolest people I know and the person who got me into Mean Girls in the first place, so there's no one else I'd be happier to share my directorial duties on this fanfilm with.

Beetlejuice & Lydia and MEAN GIRLS are both being developed by Showtime Studios, a group me, Cass, and two other friends of ours, Carrie (@hollowisthyname) and Alex (@ticklemewiggly), have formed to develop fanmade adaptations of beloved stage shows. There's so much more we want to do if our two current projects are received well, so we hope you'll stick around to see what we do next!

So with all that being said, I hope you're all looking forward to MEAN GIRLS! We already have a finished script and some cast members we're excited to announce soon, so I hope you'll stick around for more updates as we bring this wonderful story of Art Freaks and Plastics to you all!

My main OCs are from my webcomic Star-Bound Destination (READ IT!!!!) they're a bunch of guys who are cool and in space. Yeah. Here's the cover from top to bottom it's Henrietta, Prometheus, and Paul, but there's more blorbos.

The more blorbos are Not pictured but trust me they're (mostly) cool and awesome and like 50% of characters have not appeared yet LMAO | Anyways. I love them. there is no implicit tragedy amongst them. None at all.. I can't say anything unless directly asked.

7. What is an aspect of their appearance that you like the most?

Their hat! I'm a huge sucker for like pieces of clothing with meaning behind them??

Their hat not only represents their love of the interloper but also was given to them by Hornfels when they started showing interest in the comet as a young hatchling. It also kinda represents their growth a little bit?

Like they were a runty hatchling people thought wouldn't grow very tall and their hat kept falling over their eyes when they'd get excited. But over the years as they trained to follow their life long dream they finally grew into it and into themself a little bit!

12. Do you have a playlist for the character? What songs do you associate with them and why?

They do have a playlist!! It's not very fleshed out, they're surprisingly a hard character to make a playlist for...

(there's also a Startners playlist I started but there's a song on there that's pretty 18+ so I won't link it here. Also there's only 2 songs on it lmao)

I think the MAIN songs i associate them with are Rule #9 Child of the Stars - Fish in a Birdcage and Sad Machine - Porter Robinson

The first I'm pretty sure I named a fic after the first one because it just felt very Mylo and Hornfels coded and the second one I have a whole animatic script for but I never sat down to work on it... (Very daunting task)

14. Do you have any quotes tied to the character, either from the story itself or from another source that fit them?

ADHD object permanence is a CURSE. Trying so hard to like think of any one quote from the DOZENS of fics I've written for them or anything ive tagged as them but my memory is SO BAD BRO.

I think my favourite passage I've written for them came from The Horrors that Lie Beneath?

Cause it integrates the pure guilt they feel over their love of the interloper as well as the feeling of grief they feel about their own universe ending.

16. Is there any memes or running jokes associated with the character, both in- and out of universe?

I think the closest thing they got to a meme or running joke is honestly the term 'Startners'. Like not that much for a joke anymore but it STARTED as a joke the same way GrumpyCat did for my BG3 OC Sorren + Rolan did.

So often I'll go 'haha wouldn't this be funny' and then it stops being funny and just starts being a normal word in my vocabulary lmaoooo

(Startners is literally just... They're both astronomers/astronauts and they're partners. Star + Partners... Startners...)

More Than Survive

So when we've got a big song focusing on a lot of different characters and ideas I am chasing EVERYTHING around in my enclosure trying to chew on something. Jeremy's monologuing on his way to and on the bus, learning everyone's personality in the hallway, Michael bopping along to music, all of it!! I had food for WEEKS when Claudia's MTS animation dropped like MMMM THATS THE SHIT

Two-Player Game

Shipping fuel aside I love how we get to see Michael and Jeremy's (and Jeremy and Mr. Heere's) dynamic!! Specifically how we get to watch them bounce off each other when Jeremy sings his own verse and their lil back n forth in the second chorus. Plus imagining these two trying to have a conversation while getting swarmed by zombies in-game is just SO FUCKING fun for me!!!

Be More Chill Pt. 1 and 2

SQUIP being a manipulative bastard my beloved,,, the (presumably squip-produced) image of everyone in the mall first berating Jeremy and then later praising him, or rather what he could be if he continues listening to the squip OUGH mans just wants to be liked </3

Upgrade

SQUIP being a manipulative bastard my beloved!!! Like I imagine it also put Jeremy in the right time and place to see Jake and Christine being all cute together to try n fuel Jer's jealousy into listening to it. Like!!! And ok, I get that Loser Geek Whatever was added to give more context into Jer's life to kinda,, Justify why he would want to listen to the squip and that's all well and good! It's not a bad song by any stretch! But to me personally when we get to "should I take the upgrade" and we hear the ensemble just repeating "upgrade upgrade upgrade now now now now now" like,, that in my head is the squip FURTHER pressuring Jeremy and OVERWHELMING him into taking the upgrade to get the voices in his head to stop. (See also Claudia's Upgrade animation ough,,) Is there a part of him that kinda wants to take it anyway? Sure! But the idea of squip doing EVERYTHING it can to ENSURE Jeremy says yes is just!!! Raaagh!!! Evil scheming!!!

Halloween

Similar to MTS I love the chaos!! Of switching between several characters and seeing how everyone else is partying it up!! And this is just me and my Brain Animatic talking but I just love the idea of Jeremy and Jake's dance battle in the og script?? Like ok we all know that the squip would be manipulating Jeremy's body to get him to win but like?? I really would've wanted to see that friendly competition between Jeremy and Jake?? I wanna see them be friends!!! Even if the shit hits the fan literally a few minutes later. SPEAKING OF WHICH

Do You Wanna Hang?

Look I've already done deep analysis on this song in two other posts. And this is more on the scene As A Whole and not just the song itself (it's DYWR in another font, musically there's not a ton else happening) but it's the character interactions, it's squip being a rotten little shit and being MUCH more overt in forcing Jeremy into something he doesn't want. Like the manipulation was always there but this is like, our first look into EVIL evil, like no the squip is NOT a good thing for you. And then the frenzy of Jake showing up and OH SHIT BROOKE'S HERE TOO and jer can only get the briefest apology out before he just DIPS completely and everything is FALLING APART and!!!! Like!!! Yes it's an uncomfy song and an uncomfy scene but that's the POINT and it's SO VITAL to emphasizing that the squip only cares about RESULTS and not the healthiest way for Jeremy to GET them.

Michael in the Bathroom

I feel like a lot of animatics (and the bway version) just water this song down to "Michael sad" instead of really showing his like, Progression of Emotions. Like he's gotta be in sort of despondent shock at first!! He really went through all his research just for Jeremy to walk out on him?? The fuck?? Like yeah he's alone at this party and he doesn't know what to do without a friend there, (i could stay right here or disappear,) but he's petty and resentful about it (and nobody'd even notice at all [...] cuz my buddy kind of left me alone, but I'd rather fake pee than stand awkwardly) and THEN he starts getting sad (everything felt fine when I was half of a pair, but through no fault of mine there's no other half there)

I should probably make this song its own entire post with all the switching between emotions Michael does between lines (he does it A Lot if you ask me) but he's so much more than just sad and mopey!! He's pissed off!! He's frantic!! He's ten thousand different things!! HES MORE THAN JUST SAD!!!! And I feel like that entire SHITSTORM of emotions isn't shown enough!!!

Smartphone Hour

CHAOS CHAOS CHAOS!!! YOU KNOW THE DRILL BY NOW!!! I don't have much else other than like, the latter half of the song where the rumor mill REALLY blows up and everyone's just saying Whatever the fuck about Rich and it's like!!!! OUGH there really aren't enough Smartphone Hour animatics out there!! And even then idk how many of them really capture the true CHAOS of "Hey, one of our classmates burned Jake's fucking house down," and then social media just has a goddamn RIOT!! I was going to put lyric examples here but, it REALLY is just everything after "always be aware of autocorrect" all the way to the end of the song

The Pants Song

Listen maybe I'm just a filthy Jeremy kinnie (I am) but to see his dad kickstart his life back up because he's worried about his son who just Called Him The Fuck Out is just!! 🤌🤌🤌 and the way he gets Michael in on it because he KNOWS that if anyone's gonna get through to Jeremy, it's gonna be the one that knows him better than anyone else!!! And like, we actually see a pretty good chunk of Michael's character here too??? Arguably more than mitb??? They both care about Jeremy so much!!!

The Play

It's a big ensemble piece again you know I'm totally feral for it!!! This one might just also need its own post too bc goddamn it's like a 12 minute scene with all the dialogue!!! Like with the squip finally showing its cards and revealing its true intentions!!! Seeing the squipped versions of all the other kids while Jeremy and Michael finally team up again!!! Oh god and the fight,, the squip blocking Jeremy from saying sorry,, making him fight Michael, GODS there's so much to unpack in that twenty second conversation alone!!!! And like can we talk about the terror of the "I just feel so connected to you guys right now" when they swarm Michael!!! And him having to WATCH Jeremy be tempted by squipped Christine?? Facing that he might have to go through the grief of losing his best friend AGAIN???? FUCK I LOVE THIS SHOW

Voices in my Head

Ensemble joins again babeyyyyy!! Like seriously I just love seeing everyone's distinct ways of hyping Jeremy up!!! Mr. Heere's cheesy old school approach! Michael pointing out something that's not superficial! Rich's innuendo! Jenna and Brooke being total sweethearts!! Chloe's backhanded advice (she's so fucking funny holy shit)!! AN ACTUAL LOOK INTO JAKE BEING A TOTAL BRO!!!

Not only all that, but the way that Jeremy kinda,, foregoes everyone's advice and does his own thing!! He ignores the voices telling him what to do and says "what's on his mind," AND THE ELUDING TO THE SQUIP STILL BEING THERE BUT!! The conscious decision to shut that voice down!! And this spawns like, my favorite line from the entire show

"So many voices in my head, and they can yell and hurt like hell but I know I'll be fine [...] of the voices in my head the loudest one is mine"

MY EXCLUSION OF ILPR, SQUIP SONG, DYWR, MTS REPRISE (both of them), AND AGTIKBI DOESN'T MEAN I DONT LIKE ANY OF THESE SONGS!!! I'm sure I could find a lot to chew on if I went after dywr, even though it's more or less The Joke Song of the entire show but YEAH THOSE ONES DEFINITELY HAVE MERIT and I might even rb this later with additions but THIS POST IS ALREADY SUPER LONG AND I KINDA BLEW THIS ASK OUT OF THE WATER BUT XNDJSKSNDH

Good Omens 2 bits (part 1)

Imma watch this again and actually take notes the second time around, but I just wanted to do some points on things I noticed on first watch:

- I love how the Bentley actually IS sentient (or at least some version of it) and changes it’s personality a bit when Azirapale drives it (is it bc he actually changed the Bentley? How did he manage to actually change the Bentley? HMMMMM??? awfully sus Crowley)

- Another thing about the Bentley, idk if they were actually there in the first season, but you can VERY CLEARLY see the bullet hole stickers that Crowley got the one time he got petrol just so he could get those damn Bond bullet hole stickers. Nice touch.

- Apparently Crowley’s flat is property of Hell??? And that’s why he has to live in his car the whole time now that he’s a traitor??? Do you think Crowley has been only sleeping in his car and spending the rest of his day in the bookshop? One of the lines in Crowley’s confession would seem to support that but idk.

- Onto the bookshop now, absolutely LOVE how Aziraphale learned his bloody lesson the first time about how IF YOU OWN A BOOKSHOP DO NOT HAVE OPEN FLAMES WITHOUT PROPER SAFETY MEASURES!! I was dying when them using electric candles in the circle finally hit home and Gabriel saying “Look there’s plenty more fire extinguishers up here!” absolutely killed me. I was dying of laughter.

- Another thing about that climax... I absolutely fucking LOST IT when Aziraphale did the halo thing. Neil mentions it in the introduction of the script book about how Good Omens was almost made a movie before and... well... take a look for yourself:

the FUCKING DISCUS HALOES MADE IT IN FFS!!! I was dying, as soon as I saw Aziraphale go for the halo I was like, “oh Neil you better FUCKING not have” and then he did, and I had my face in my hands and couldn’t stop cackling at the madness I had found myself in.

- Another thing about this script book, I noticed this just through the trailers but they did cement it in the show:

They did it, they managed to put it in there. I honestly teared up a bit when I heard it in the trailer, cuz it was something that Terry had suggested. - Another song related thing, I am SOOOO happy that good old fashioned loverboy finally got the love it deserved. It only took us all making so many animatics with it and fanfic titles with it’s lyrics, but I’m glad to see that the Bentley thought it was fitting.

- It’s also nice to know that before the Fall, Crowley was at least a Dominion or a Throne, but my bet is on being a higher power than that since I don’t think they’d just let ANYONE make the whole galaxy (also LOVED that scene btw,  such a great opening to come back to).

- I think the last things I’m gonna mention are the whole nazi zombies thing (why is it ALWAYS nazi zombies?? It’s so weird to see them here, anyone else immediately think of COD??) and the fact that this instance of Aziraphale’s magic act is at least probably part of the reason why Crowley reacted the way he did in the first season to Aziraphale wanting to do magic for Warlock’s birthday (that and he already knew that his magic wasn’t very good as he says).

But yeah I’ll probably have more thoughts later since I am going to watch it again and take proper notes this time, but even though that ending was heart breaking I still really enjoyed it whole heartedly. I’m pretty sure my smile was plastered onto my face for most of the show. I know not many people will see this, but I hope you enjoyed and I’d love to gear about any little things that you noticed. So back in time, this used to be a hospital. Those rooms are used to be wards where patients admits. You can see there are wide rooms right. So they have placed the hospital beds to their patients in the wide hall. They weren’t devided as rooms back then. 

Did you see the map? So you can find two courtyards. In the center of the buildings and one outside. They had built them for patients for like.. therapy , feel freedom. 

And this is the doctors’  staff room. 

This ice cream shop used to be the mochery.

Me : oh. So are the interiors still the same? 

Uncle : i mean.. Some of them are.. But most of them are new. You can see those grills, and iron hooks on the window. Also there are still the old tiles on the roof. They are not sri lankan tiles anyway. I mean not even the newest ones. 

Once this place has benign abandoned for few years. After we got independence, we also had the war between lttds right. Back in time they also have used this place to hide. But after then no one had come this place and has been abandoned. But afterwards governors took it to the government and rebuilt it as a shopping complex.

What’s unique about your project?

My project reimagines real historical figures, Dascon and Pramila, and reinvents their original story, which ends in tragedy. But in my version of the story, it offers a fresh perspective and invites the audience to question whether or not they achieve a happy ending, adding an element of suspense and hope. 

I also hope to portray the essence of both Sri Lankan and Indian history and themes that also highlights the intricate details of the architecture and artistic grandeur of the two regions. 

One of the core themes of the story is the suppression of women’s dreams and ambitions in a patriarchal society. And Pramila represents the countless women whose needs and desires were overlooked, and who were often reduced to their roles within marriage. Another important theme is the relationship between Dascon and Pramila. Growing up they shared a friendship, but there are unspoken feelings towards each other and the social and cultural constraints make it challenging to express their true feelings. So they’re both in a state of emotional confusion, trying to understand their feelings for each other while dealing with the expectations placed upon them. 

The cliffhanger ending leaves the audience questioning the future of their relationship. Will it lead to a forbidden romance, or will they let go of their feelings for each other? This open-ended conclusion allows for multiple interpretations and potential outcomes, keeping the audience engaged and invested in the characters' fates.

What was your progress at the end of semester 1?

Since I was significantly behind at work when I first started this project, I was struggling with finalizing and developing the story and script. Especially because I wanted to infuse my own twist to the story. I spent a large amount of time on that so I was lacking in character and concept art exploration. I finally managed to finalize the script, and complete the storyboards and the animatics. I later on realized that the animation extended for more than four minutes which is way more than the advised duration. I felt like the animation was too dialogue heavy as well, so I’m looking for ways to simplify it more, without losing the core message and the emotional depth. 

What did you do during the break for this project?

I spent the time reading and watching a few pieces that would help me refine and simplify my animation, so I was unable to work on any concept art. Before I start working on the artwork and animating, I want to make sure I'm ready and have finished the script, storyboards, and direction I'm going for. 

What is your plan going forward? (Include a detailed time plan)

Going forward, I want to start with the detailed background designs and explore more on the character design. I want to use as many references as possible in order to bring out that indian/Sri Lankan style and essence. I plan to have those completed within the month of June.

So by Stage 01 - Final character designs, Final concept artworks, Final storyboard, final animatic with sound reworked. 

July - August: Rough animation, Clean up, scene by scene color

September - Voice acting, sound design, editing and final artworks

Do you have any challenges that are hindering your progress on the final project? if Yes What are those challenges?

The main thing I struggle with is time management. Since I also work, I just need to focus on sticking to a routine. Because it is manageable, I just need to put my mind to it. Aside from that, once I have figured out the final version of the story, I can begin working on the final animation.

Other tasks include finding voice actors and creating my own soundtrack for the animation. I intend to seek assistance from a few friends, who may know people who can compose music.

okay that's out of the way, now on to the fun stuff

I am working away at making the script for VAs and artists to reference cause, as previously stated, nobody wants to wade through twelve thousand words of self indulgent fic written in my weirdly descriptive poetic style, to try and do something.

I have a possible VA for Vox and Fizzarolli, which. I was honest to god not expecting to find someone who can do Fizz's voice, he only has a few lines so I was deadass considering cutting his part out (I would have cried about this cause I love Fizz so much) He isn't in the server cause he doesn't have Discord but we're keeping in touch. Fellow Fizzarolli fans, say "thank you Joshua". I also have another VA on board but we haven't talked much about what roles she can do, and I think we're waiting till we have a decent cast on-board. If it helps, I do quite a good Angel Dust and Katie Killjoy, so if no-one else volunteers for those, I can give it a try if I need to.

So far we have no artists, which isn't an issue yet cause as far as I know voice stuff gets done first in animation. I will be putting out the call again closer to when we need artists for this. Expanding on this from the original post: I'm hoping for something similar-ish to the show's style, done as an animatic or even rough animation with a bit of colour if possible. I'm not expecting perfection, I'm not asking for something completely polished, I just want something I can see, I guess. And again, I wish I was rich and was able to pay people, but unfortunately I'm broke as fuck. This is why I'd love to get a fair few people on board so the work is divided up evenly and no one person is doing too much.

There's a LOT of talented animators and VAs on Youtube who've inspired me, but I have no idea how to reach them as I'm not sure if a lot of them have Tumblr. Any advice on this, or anyone who knows similarly talented people on this hellsite, would be very cool

Look, this is gonna sound absolutely unhinged, but hear me out. (insane rambles under the cut, this bitch is LONG)

In April, a friend and I had a conversation about a song I wrote and how it was. Well, kinda coded to Vox and Valentino.

Then one thing led to another, and two-and-a-bit months and twelve thousand words later, I had written an absolutely sprawling shitshow of a fic (details later in the post)

Even as I was writing it, I knew the written word didn't do it justice.

Hence, this post.

Fuck it, my mom always says "if you don't ask you don't get", and for once I want her to be right.

This is, I suppose, a sort of... call to action, for lack of a better term.

Artists, animators and voice actors, I'd like your help to turn this fic into an animatic, or if we can manage it, an actual animation.

ONLY if we can manage it, not if it's gonna stress anyone out.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Just to get this out of the way, not that I should even need to say this but it's unfortunately 2024. If anyone even SUGGESTS using A.I. your ass is getting blocked. I don't fuck with that artificial bullshit.

On to my next point: I am unequivocally in support of artists and actors being paid for their work. 

However, I am a Broke Bitch. Unless we could somehow do crowdfunding or something, I physically would not be able to pay people. This makes me feel like a very shitty person, but unfortunately it's the truth, and I want to be upfront and honest about that.

This is why I hope to get as many people on board as possible for this project, so nobody has to do a shit-ton of work.

I understand that most of you are busy, with work, school/college, or life generally life-ing. Join the club, my life is hectic too.

This is why I really have no set deadline for this. Whether it takes a few months or a few years, as long as it's done well with a minimal amount of stress.

My Idea Of The Process 

(please bear in mind I have little to no idea of how the animation process works so this is almost definitely wrong, please feel free to correct me about it)

Step 1. Storyboard

Step 3. Animatic (this could very well end up being as far as it gets and that is absolutely cool beans)

Finally, I'd be more than happy to be the one to edit all the clips together. Editing is its own kind of hell, and I'm totally willing to take one for the team.

The Vision

This is. (fffffff) this is the part that's gonna make me sound like a Draconian jerk but I promise I don't mean to come across this way.

I'm hoping to have something that's as close to the style of the show as possible. (this video kinda has the right vibes) This is so the final project will look cohesive and somewhat professional. (god that probably sounded so bad but I genuinely have no idea how else to say it)

TO BE ABSOLUTELY CLEAR. I have nothing against artists with other distinctive art styles, in fact I've come across several that I absolutely love.

Regarding The Writing

I've never directed anything before, so forgive me if this is crossing a line, but like. 

I have my vision for how I want this to go and I'm kind of. not overly flexible on that. Obviously ideas that people have to get this to work good are more than welcome, but they might not end up happening.

Not to be a dick, but I am sorta the director so I do kinda get to make the call on that stuff. (ew god that felt odd)

If this gets off the ground, I'd have to turn this 12,000 word fic into a script to make it easier for people to read it and not get bogged down by my weird old-fashioned poetic style. This would be sent out to people who express interest at some point.

Just a heads-up: If you're expecting an AO3 link I am so sorry but it's Google Docs, mainly because this thing is wildly self-indulgent and I, for one, do not fancy attracting potential haters. Most people are nice, some are very vocally not. Besides, what would be the fun if everyone knew the story in advance?

Ephemera Week (2002)

Mission Hill (originally aired on WB, 1999-2000)

Mission Hill was a perfectly good animated series from former Simpsons show-runners Bill Oakley and Josh Weinstein. It was a sitcom about cool young people in a cool young people city. Andy French is an aspiring cartoonist, intended to be a Matt Groening type who would (over the course of many many seasons) eventually find success and get his own super-successful animated series called THE SIMPSONS: SEASONS 1-8.

The premise of the show was that Andy’s parents retire and sell the childhood home, displacing his nerdy high-school aged younger brother Kevin. Kevin moves in with Andy and learns how to be a cool city style guy, you know, the kind that’s always “walkin here!” and sucking off Bob Balaban in the men’s room and whatnot.

The show is at least better than the bad seasons of the Simpsons, and has a cool alt-comics style that suits the show really well. Not to damn it with faint praise, it’s a good show. There are a handful of GREAT episodes and plenty of strong jokes. There's news of a revival in the works focusing on Gus and Wally, the older gay couple in the show. It's supposed to take place in the same era the show originally aired in, which is just great.

Like Baby Blues and Home Movies before it, I did catch this show randomly on it's network of origin. I saw one or two of the final episodes to air on WB. I liked it! I was glad to see it get revived for a run on Adult Swim. I've wanted more episodes ever since.

I don't think the show is available for streaming anywhere, which is too bad. It came out on DVD with special features. That DVD set was reissued on DVD-R without special features, so... buyer? be wary. There's also a number of music replacements that ruin some of the scenes. At one point I had a bootleg set where somebody took the DVD video and replaced the audio with the as-broadcast version of of the show. Good luck finding it.

Another confusing Baffler Meal thing: the deleted cold open that's on the DVD. It gets called back to in the actual episode ("Between two steamed buns", "Nine dollars!? For what?") and provides crucial context, BUT it also gets contradicted in the actual episode (SG sells out for "one serious speaker" instead of owing a restaurant money). Also I remember all the ads for this episode used a clip from the cold open! It always kinda bothered me that they cut it but boys (matt & dave) will be boys!

I do think the cold open is nice and I always make a point to watch it with the episode. In my mind they are as essential as watching that boring Terry Gilliam short before Meaning of Life. The next step is pointlessly editing them together using Nero. Yeah, that’s the ticket
