re: the definitive cancellation. i hadn't been holding out too much hope because i didn't want to get devastated all over again, but man i think i really was expecting to be pleasantly surprised. everything else about this show has been so goddamn miraculous.
i'm just one guy in this fandom, and i don't have a particularly loud voice or anything, but i want to get it on record that this show really did have a profound effect on me. i was literally a different person pre march 2022.
ofmd's sheer earnest portrayal, love, and celebration of queer identity is groundbreaking. it's a good show. it displays an expectation of quality that's been getting harder and harder to find in the current media climate (when it comes to mainstream media, anyway).
this show and the discussion it has about queer identity, masculinity, societal expectations, had a hand in me getting closer to actualizing my own identity. it ignited in me a profound desire for more portrayals of genuine expression, and felt like a breath of fresh air in our irony-poisoned culture.
ofmd is funny. and it's loving. and it's honest. and it's obvious why it was able to form such a community around it.
it sucks that we won't get to see the proper end of it the way it was originally intended. it really sucks. but the show still exists and we all got to see it and i'm serious when i say appreciating that fact is going to be better than mourning what could have been at this point.

It's wild watching people react to ofmd/make posts about ofmd, who have clearly never watched any dry humour British/Aussie/Kiwi comedies before (Blackadder, Monty python, summer heights high etc) because they expect all of these dark heavy plotlines to have big dramatic soapy conclusions where everyone's crying and sincerely apologizing and hugging. And then they're surprised or disappointed when it inevitably doesn't.
It gets played off with a joke or everyone just immediately shrugs off any hurt or trauma they experienced and move on.
Like, that's the point gang. Subverting expectations, satirical takes on drama and historical shows. Ed caused monumental levels of havoc then Ed flapped his arms and hid under a blanket and all Stede had to do was compliment him now they're good again.
There are shows where one character is actively trying to harm another character at all times and it's played as a joke because it is one. You're not supposed to cancel the character doing the harm because they're a bad person. You're meant to go "Haha they're insane." And move on because the absurdity is intentional.
"It would never happen like that in real life!!" Yeah that's the point. Also it's a comedy show.
I'm not saying these shows aren't capable of powerful moments. If anything these shows are known for their powerful moments. Because they come at times when you don't expect them. I'm not devaluing the emotional impact or the writing. You're just not supposed to take it that seriously. It can simultaneously be a heartfelt meaningful show and also be highly satirical and making fun of itself.
You can gather so much genuine insight and symbolism from these silly little characters and them being absurd doesn't take away from that. Them having intense emotions one moment, then in literally the next scene they're goofing up a storm. The writer's take different avenues to solving conflict that's not dramatic proclamations and biting anger like you'd see in a drama.
Will Blackbeard actually apologize? Probably not lol. It doesn't take away from his character. It's not a cheap cop out. His YouTuber notesapp apology will probably be the only one and his heinous acts will continue to be brought up in the form of jokes bc that's the genre baby.

okay one thing i wish queer people especially had more nuance about in media is that while i do think we need more canonically gay ships (and characters and plots etc etc) i also think there are so many Queer Ships specifically that are not being appreciated for being friendships. like it pisses me off that for whatever reason queer friendships (that are like...two steps removed from being queer partnerships they just don't kiss or have sex) do not get the same hype or appreciation as the romantic ships. and hell i don't even wanna use the phrase "romantic ships" to just describe partnerships. i think queer friendships are romantic as hell and a lot of people just do not care or recognize that!!! like this all comes back to society's erasure and ignorance of the aro/ace/aspec identities but it's so annoying because all of this queerness can and should coexist. it's a fine line between "okay this is clearly gay partnership subtext" and "this friendship is a little too queer to be hetero but idk if they'd actually fuck" - but just because two men are queerly best friends it doesn't mean that isn't just as relevant or important as two homo partners. i get that we need more explicit gay rep and i'm not denying how important and powerful and meaningful that is...but seeing a rise in really queer coded friendship content is actually such a great thing and i wish people would stop being so rude about it! like i get it you want your two blorbos to kiss! but counter argument: two blorbos learn each other intimately without sexual attraction and realize that being friends with another person is actually really powerful and life-changing and Queer in its own way!!!
but also in a much more real sense...my god disney, please just fucking make the gay lokius partnership canon i swear to god

Imagine it .
Stede finally gets around to offering Olu a promotion and Olu goes “actually I thought I might … go home?”
And Stede’s like , happy but also heartbroken and he starts on this little speech about how proud he is and how it’s been a pleasure and his honour and etc etc etc and Olu’s kind of confused but well Stede is just Like That
And it dawns on Stede and he’s like . “Oh . You mean like for a visit .”

btw there IS a bird that never touches ground
the common swift lives in all of Europe and most of Asia or in the south of Africa depending of the season, and it can spend 10 whole months in the sky without ever touching ground
it's too vulnerable on land
oh and those two months left? mating season

headcanon that Frenchie says things like "back on Blackbeard's ship" (when he refers to it at all) and the others are like Frenchie. it was this ship. we're on that same ship

Listen, not to get into any discourse, but it’s fascinating to me that there’s quite a few fans of ofmd that say that Ed is abusive and that is sure to abuse Stede in their inn, yet also ship Izzy with Stede.
Look, ship what you like, but how can you say that Ed head-butting Stede and smashing a chair against a wall is abusive to Stede, all the while shipping Stede with the man that stabbed him and then later got him captured by the British who almost killed him by firing squad?
Again, ship what you like, I have no problems with people shipping the two together, I get it, it’s an interesting dynamic the two have. But as a Stede girly it’s kinda upsetting to see that the man who canonically loves and adores Stede get called abusive because of a reaction he had after coming back from the dead. Meanwhile the man that tried to kill him multiple times is considered to be the better choice by some.
It’s just… weird to me.

hello right now I am thinking about somebody gently kissing Izzy on the gap of skin between his glove and his sleeve before taking off the glove and kissing him again in the center of his palm. that is all

I don't like getting so angry but I've seen this enough times that I feel the need to say something before I go insane: If you write a fic or draw fanart depicting someone doing something sexual to Izzy without making sure he wants it first, that's rape and you need to fucking tag it. Yes, even if said character thinks they know him well enough to tell how he feels. Yes, even if he ends up liking it. Yes, even if he secretly wanted it, unless the other character is literally telepathic (and even then, if he can't bring himself to say he wants it out loud that's still pretty iffy). Yes, even if he did something wrong and "deserves" to be "punished." I can't tell if this fandom is just bad with tagging or if everyone has an abysmal understanding of consent but either way I am so close to giving up on it entirely because I literally see this shit every day and I can't take it anymore.

OFMD S2 wishlist: a parallel to the "I'm not a fucking mermaid" scene where Ed asks Lucius if he's a ghost and Lucius answers with "I'm not a fucking ghost"
