Follow up of the Marco And Shanks Feuding Over Buggy -

Once things resolve, the captains are somehow the WORST instigators. Roger, once he realized Marco was flirting with his Baby Bug, is caught between "well, kid has good taste" and "Oh I Gotta Kill A Child".

Whitebeard makes frequent comments about daughter in laws and it sends EVERYONE reeling, especially Buggy. He thinks it's hilarious, and it mostly joking ((but a little serious)).

Maybe it's the multishipper in me, maybe it's the polyamory projection, but eventually Shanks and Buggy have The Conversation about being captains of the own crews, of being each other's most definitely, of being married ((they are 13-15 when The End Is Nigh for Roger, and I can see Buggy having a sudden realization that Captain that Dad is dying. She and Shanks speedrun being married so he can do it. They're minors so it isn't official, but they get/make rings, set it up and have Captain officiate it so they're "married". It's the closest they'll get to the real deal and both need their dad there for this.)).

Shanks and Buggy establish an open relationship. They can be with and pursue others, but communication is key and they need to just keep each other relatively in the loop.

Buggy jokingly asks if Marco is still a sore subject, and Shanks shoots her a grin. "If you stay mine, you can be with whoever you like. Just promise me you will make sure he treats you the way you deserve, princess."

The next time Marco crosses either, it's Shanks. And he asks "hey featherhead, still crushing on clowns?"

"And if I am?"

"Here's her denden number - be nice, be polite, don't hurt her or I'll roast you for dinner, chicken boy :))"

Buggy goes on to assemble the world's weirdest, most unexpected polycule. A Yonko husband, a Yonko's division commander boyfriend, two warlords, a Marine, maybe a Revolutionary, just... wild ass polycule.

((Bonus, once she settles in the East for a bit, Zeff takes one look at her and goes "Oh boy now I have a niece. Damn it all." He threatens to shovel talk anyone who dates his weird clown niece but they rarely stop by the East, so he's got the conversations scripted in his head. When Mihawk shows up, he is READY.))

Buggy also has a bunch of evil exes bc she's a catch but she doesn't always clock red flags. It's mostly fine, but if any attempt retaliation, usually she's oblivious, either bc her crew goes full Protect Mom Mode or bc her current partners... take out the trash, as it were :))

Once Luffy realizes Buggy is basically his step mom is all sorts of ways, the Strawhat Protection System is enacted full throttle. She is oblivious. It's hilarious. Buggy has Scary Dog Privileges and doesn't even realize.

Whitebeard still calls her daughter-in-law. Roger is screaming crying throwing up in the afterlife. Rayleigh flips between "Oh my baby girl can handle herself ahe's so strong" and "Nobody Is Good Enough For My Daughter". Crocus hoards all newspapers that so much as mention her or Shanks.

Just. Silly funny polycule shenanigans.

Buggy just has a whole ass harem of boys pining over her and she goes through life thinking they're normal about her but they're not. They're literally obsessed with her. She only loves Shanks and is fond of Crocodile and Mihawk (ends up falling for them eventually, y'know) and the people she has been with have always been just kind of there? She doesn't forget them but she doesn't really care about them either. IT girl, girlboss behavior for once even if she's still a failgirl. But they always remember her. She's not easy to forget. Everybody that loves her is so protective of her too and she wonders why she never gets bothered by anybody?? She believes it's because she's now important and scary and yadda yadda but it's just because people have to go through Rayleigh, the strawhats, Shanks, and Cross Guild to get to her. So, you know, she's protected.

This is just amazing, btw. I also think they have an open relationship. And Marco being extremely confused when Shanks gives him Buggy's number is just hilarious, help. He's having a moment there wondering if it's a trap or something. I think Buggy would have the time of her life, and although Shanks also sleeps with other people, his heart will always be with Buggy. Like- He's the clingiest most annoying husband in the world. He's so proud of calling Buggy his wife. He's just there cheering for her, knowing that no matter how many people she's with, she'll go back to him!! The trust they could've had in each other if things would've gone well,,,,,, Going insane.

Minami Kenjirou sees red.

The water pools around his ankles, cascading down his pink legs and splashing against the tiles of the shower stall.

His skin is turning pink from the scalding water, the color sprouting from various spots on his limbs and spreading like wildfire, a distant rash his eyes ache to relieve but not his hands.

[Don’t get angry.]

“You good-for-nothing brat,” a woman spits from behind him before striking him on the back one more.

He sits on his knees, hands balled into fists and a neutral, distant expression on his face. The ideal figure of the obedient child.

The first strikes have that effect. They don't sting so much anymore, or maybe it's just that he can't feel them as acutely as he does for the next ones.

His nails dig into his palms as the whip hits the tender, marred flesh of his back which he is sure is a cobweb of red lines by now, a maze of strings entangled together and imprisoning his frame.

He grits his teeth when she pauses, then lashes out at him with a howl-like scream. There we are, he observes. The whip drags itself along his spine, dragging with it remnants of the skin it has reopened, and blood. The movement, somehow, reminds him of a dog licking its master's wounds.

Such irony.

Maybe if he untangled his hands from his hair, he could give in to the pulsing curiosity. Run his fingers along his arms, his legs, his chest and back. Search for dark places and feel them burn underneath his numb fingertips. Rake them with his nails, just the tips, then pressing, digging into the flesh then rubbing, and scratching, until skin there is no more.

[Don’t abandon me.]

"Please, Minami, my darling, my love..."

He advances towards the woman half-sprawled on the floor, her body slowly emptying itself from blood, liquid seeping between the fingers she presses on her stomach. If he closes his eyes, Minami could almost hear it drip. Each and every single drop leaving the veins, slipping through pink flesh and reddening fabric, attracted by force of gravity to the fellow trickles and pulling itself to the ground in a steady beat. A pulse outside of a body, a rhythm in echo wth the faltered breathing and choked sobs.

What a sweet, sweet music to his ears.

“Oh my god, Minami, I beg of you!”

His feet bring him closer in the direction of the body, reaching out towards the extended hand. He raises his own in response, fingers clutching a torn card to the pint the corners have dug into his palm and etched a new web of lines interwined with his own natural lifelines.

The knife resting in the palm of his hand is the only god he knows.

[Don’t go anywhere.]

(Hey.)

His nails, he notices, have dug into the flesh of his palms deep enough to leave crescent-shaped indents. The hot water's strangely relaxing effect, added to the cacophony thumping inside his head, has left him too numb to focus on the pain. The mark becomes an open wound and even as it draws blood, Minami's eyes only follow the trail crimson droplets take, plunging into the pink water and blooming atop the rose water. They disperse themselves as soon as they come, washed down the drain.

[Fasten it tightly, til you could throw up, so there aren’t there aren’t any people here.]

Like poppies, a voice pipes in his brain. Alive for a day, then gone tomorrow.

Just like humans.

[Nice results, huh? Hey hey, aren’t I a good kid?]

He exits the cabin and lifts his hand in front of his face, bringing it to the mirror next to the stall. The temporary crimson hair dye he used on missions has left his fingers tinted as if he's dipped them in a can of paint.

These days, he doesn't bother putting on gloves to dye his hair or using cottonballs and makeup remover to wipe the blotches of red and white caked on his face after a long night.

[Aren’t I a cute kid? Hey hey, I’m good, right?]

He touches a finger to his lips, chases the movement of the tip as it traces the remnants of wine red that formed a perfect line on his mouth only hours ago. A blunt slip on one side smears cosmetic beyond the left corner of his lips. His finger presses flush on his cheek, and he repeats the motion faster on the other side, smudging the right cheek with a wider, paler line that still burns bright under the bathroom led.

[It hurts, hey]

Maybe he should start investing in better cosmetics. If only to stop looking like he just stepped out of a freak show. He knows himself to resemble such a specimen out of overhearing the people coming by the orphanage, the same ones who come to adopt and yet whisper behind his back. They say a lot of things, mostly about how he does'nt strike anyone as a fit role model for the children he teaches at the small college. Some even go as far as saying things along the lines of him trying to find a family that will love him through his work. Someone who who will appreciate him in spite of his antics and queer physique. About what a child he is. On the outside he gives them the smallest polite smile he can msuter. On the inside he's dismembering them and cutting inch by inch with a dull saw. See how pretty they'd look with red decorating their faces.

Minami may be naïve, but he isn't so stupid as to not know what others have to say about him.

But then, Yuuri did say red suited him, didn't he?

Minami's wide eyes remain fixated on Yuuri's face and hands as they remove the cap atop the lipstick, the color slowly popping out of its tube like a pointed needle, threateningly long and crimson. He shivers at the thought of it pressing against his lips.

As if sensing his inner dilemma, Yuuri – or rather, the Puppet Master as he'd introduced himself the first time (he really ought to get it in his head by now, stupid stupid stupid) – smiles at him reasurringly, warm brown eyes crinkling from underneath his lace mask.

Minami almost flinches when Yuuri raises his hand, and scrunches his eyes shut tightly in expectation of a slap or a blow far worse. Surprise almost makes him pull back when instead, the vigilante carresses his cheek as if cajoling a scared, wild animal.

He lets himself be manhandled, Yuuri's hand propped under his chin and fingers raising it higher. This time Minami doesn't jump when the lipstick fills the distance between himself and the other man. The tip, spotless a second ago and almost so silky he could have sworn seeing his reflection in it, dissolves as it brushes his cupid's bow, then bends in accord with the curve of his upper and lower lip. Yuuri never once takes his eyes off his work, focusing hard on getting his apprentice's mouth perfectly shaped. His touches are slow though deliberate, a painter's brush strokes on a blank canvas.

If such is a muse's occupation, then he wouldn't mind having Yuuri's eyes on him anytime.

[Love me, more and more.]

And yet he also insisted that personal hygiene remained a capital matter.

For the umpteenth time, Minami messes with his lipstick. It had started out as it usually did in these situations: out of curiosity he'd probed at the sticky substance spread across his lips in a perfect circle, finding it a little itchy despite the smoothness of the applied cosmetics under his now smeared finger. He doesn't need to look at the mirror to know that he looks like a mess.They haven't even gotten started on his hair for the day, and yet there's no doubt he already makes for a vision in red.

[It’s painful, it hurts.]

Yuuri sighs in fond exasperation by his side, if the telling smile that makes its way to his lips is any giveaway. It sends his heartbeat going at a faster pace, having this smile dedicated to him, and him only in this moment ...

“Hey, isn't that my lipstick?” Yuuri raises an enquiring eyebrow. “The shade looks familiar.”

“It is!” Minami exclaims. “You gave it to me when I first started as your assistant.”

“I did? My, my, was that long ago...” Yuuri muses, hand propped under his chin and inching closer to Minami.

His hand then reaches for Minami's, while the other comes up to carress his jaw in a soft manner. Mnami feels his cheek heat up under his teacher's knuckles.

“I must say, my little one, it suits you very well. Though you probably already knew that.” Minami's breath catches at the compliment and sincere compliment, but he has no time to muster a “thank you” before Yuuri pulls him in for a kiss, and he reacts of his own will once their lips brush. The flavor of the flowery paste invades his mouth and melts with Yuuri's own minty and sweet taste.

“Oh, poppet” Yuuri whispers when they break apart, breathless and panting in each other's ears, “I'll make a bonfire out of that spark of yours.”

[It can’t be stopped.]

Red carries memories and images that Minami shall never forget, the kind burnt in a corner of his brain, always there but never really. The scarlet fringe that falls into his eyes, the sole untainted reminder he has of his dark days. The flames burning in the hearth of Victor Nikiforov's home at every gathering, eternally burning come what may. The blaze shortening his breathing, chocking him, almost licking his body with unbearingly strong heat.

“It's okay, you're gonna be okay.”

He succumbs to darkness in the arms of a dark angel.

He won't die.

Not today.

The temporary hair dye has washed away, Minami's once fiery red hair fading back to its original flaming, marigold hue. Though the strands are slowly regaining their strawberry blond shade under the bathroom light, rose liquid still beads on the half fringe falling on his left eye, forming scarlet tears that trickle down his cheek.

[People aren’t people aren’t enough.]

“You'll leave me, won't you?”

[I won’t lose to anyone in my class.]

His sobs are delving into dangerous territory. As much as he wish he could stop that big mouth of his  from opening itself and sputter nonsense, he can't stop. What had first been repressed tears have turn to openly hysteric screaming and crying. His throat and face burn under the combination of neon lights and raw anger.

“Just say it already! Say it! SAY IT!”

Yuuri isn't replying – or could it be he isn't here at the moment? The Puppet Master's personality hardly ever strays far away from Yuuri's own, but he knows better than anyone what it takes to get him to blow a fuse.

When his mind comes into focus on this one single thought, Minami's brain shortcircuits. Shit. He just went all out on Yuuri, of all people, in a situation where he wasn't being Yuuri. He suddenly found himself praying for survival.

[More than that kid, more than any kid. Everyone come look at me.]

“Joker...”

“DON'T “JOKER” ME!” Minami snaps, then promptly slaps his hands to his mouth. Oh fuck fuck fuck now he's gone too far now he's lost it and Yuuri's gonna hurt him hurt him hurt him –

“Joker.” Yuuri's hand claps his shoulder in a tight grasp that shakes him awake from his daydreaming.

“My little trickster...c'mere”. Minami finds himself wrapped into Yuuri's arms.

[Was it kind of a lie?]

“Come on over then.” he encourages without force, rubbing his back for good measure in slow, small circles. “Cry all you need, I'm right there for you. I'm not going anywhere, okay?”

Tears stream silently on Minami's cheeks, the sobs building at the back of his throat not to far away now. He succumbs to Yuuri's embrace, burying himself deeper into his hold.

[I like you, you who are so filthy]

“Who am I to you?” Yuuri asks him one day, when they're facing each other.

A thousand words come to mind, interwined in sentences Minami is positive no language can render beautiful or meaningful enough.

His only response, the most logical that comes to mind, is to shrug, giving him his trademark lopsided grin and saying: “What's a Joker without his Queen? I'll tell you.”

He breaks the distance that separates them in a heartbeat, using one of the ropes he'd bought from a joke shop and customized to his taste – a subtle reference that, surprisingly enough, didn't go unnoticed. “Nothing.”

[It’s not enough,]

“Master! Master, look!”

Yuuri sighs. “Puppet, how many times have I told you not to call me that?”

“I know, I know, but look, look! I made us assorted cards for my new deck. What do you think?”

Truth be told he had only made two cards to replace their predecessors, but the prospect of aligning the rest of the package with the brand new ones was a tempting project.

The cards are beautiful. Polished and brand new, depicting on one Yuuri's newly acquired indigo costume and Minami's own three-piece, gold and carmine suit; with the exception that Yuuri wore a golden crown encrusted with rubies atop his head, whereas Minami had on a glittery, purple jester cap up on.

Minami rushes to show them to Yuuri, but in his haste he almost flings them straight into his palm, and barely avoids cutting it when –

Blood oozes from the tiny papercut. Though the cut isn't deep, Minami is close enough to watch the copper fluid beading from the tip of Yuuri's finger. They both stare as his blood seeped from the fingertip and dropped in the middle of Yuuri's own card, now baptized with its inspiration's essence.

[I won’t let go.]

“Yu – Master” he hushes, breath tightening at the back of his throat and forming a ball that threatens to choke him. In his panic he'd almost let out that he knew about his true identity.

[I’m so sorry.]

Yuuri waves him off, smiling reassuringly. “It's fine, Puppet. See? Just a papercut.” Yuuri brings the fingers to his lips, sucking in the trickle of blood descending on his finger. Minami unconsciously holds his breath at the sudden intake of air and fluid, the suction producing an almost inaudible and obscene sound.

“Besides,” Yuuri reflects, coming closer until their faces are inches apart, “I am sure you can make it up to me, can you?”

[This is happiness,]

Later on, he drinks in the sight of Yuuri sprawled under him. His lips swollen from kisses, his ruby-coloured lipstick bleeding at the corners of his mouth. Cheeks flush and burning. Skin tattooed with bruises and handprints, soft to the touch and body pliant under his hands.

Summary: Midge can feel Lenny looking at her. If she doesn’t look back… well, that might be worse than looking. So she looks.

His and hers riffraff is not the best Midge hoped for them.

He bails out his buddies—who, for all their nightclub savvy, were the schmucks unfortunate enough to be closest to the bar, and therefore closest to the front door, when the cops busted in. She bails out an embarrassing number of Wolfordites. It’s not the fact of them being strippers that shames Midge as each of the women is escorted from the cell in G-string and nipple pasties—like they paid an especially brazen pervert to rejig the swimsuit portion of the Miss America pageant and he went, Oh, I know!—it’s that they were caught. Survival instinct, ladies! she wants to snap at them like a drill sergeant. Just because they’re dressed in feathers doesn’t mean they need to turn into chickens with their heads cut off when the pigs trample their way into the coop.

It's easy to busy herself with the pantsless Harem Girl and the (oy yoi yoi) stripper version of herself (she’s managed to keep her hat though, which is very in-character) and turn her back to Lenny. He and his associates are laughing the whole thing off. One of them remarks on Lenny’s tie being absent from his ensemble and lets a vulgar insinuation trail off; no one actually suspects that he took this long to get here because he was between the sheets in his swanky hotel room, curled around a stark-naked Mrs. Maisel. She makes hospital jokes! She laughs! She fucks! Boy, it was a bitch to get the show corset back on.

Eventually, they’ve claimed everyone who could reasonably belong to either of them and it’s time to leave the lockup. Lenny quietly mentions to his friends that he has a prior engagement with a very, very funny comic and some terrible Chinese food. Boise overhears and tactlessly invites himself. Midge should mind. Really, she should. She should put her foot down about this as firmly as she did about the knocking policy, and the better-coffee policy, and the best-tampons policy, but she honestly thinks it might be helpful to sit this tactless man between them and make it harder for Lenny to see the expression on her face whenever she looks his way.

She was never certain that Lenny wouldn’t hurt her, but she didn’t expect it to be so soon. Maybe she’s an idiot, with the hints of his lifestyle she’s accrued without meaning to (between gigs, Lenny will drop off the map like a sea monster whose civilization has lost its taste for the old mythologies), but the heroin truly took her by surprise. She keeps thinking, Did I save him from himself tonight? Not permanently, god no, but was that where his evening was headed if the raid hadn’t happened? The blizzard? The towel and the drink and the way he undressed her with one smooth pull on a zipper?

When they walk out into the snow together, Lenny and Midge are each wearing one of his jackets. Leaving his hotel, he said the least he could do was let her borrow it again. The least he could do after what? After she rifled through his toiletry kit and saw what she saw under the harsh bathroom light, or after he made deliberate, worshipful love to her in the dark? The good or the chilling? The best or the worst?

At the hole-in-the-wall Chinese restaurant, Lenny chain-smokes while Boise talks at length about every feminine touch he’s given the Wolf lately and how the cops have probably destroyed them all. The tampons, the flavoured liqueurs, the fresh-cut floral arrangements. He’s dragged an out-of-sorts Bunny along and she’s mostly dressed—though she really puts the “crotch” in “crotchety” when she rests one heel up on the table and asks why their food’s taking so long. Midge suspects the poor guy might have a crush on Bunny, but it doesn’t stop him from draping an arm across the back of her chair. He doesn’t mean anything by it, and Midge sits forward so his arm doesn’t touch her, but Lenny’s sitting across from her and he looks primed to put his latest cigarette out in Boise’s eye. She never figured him for jealousy. Then again, he’s probably just pissed that these two extra people are eating with them and making their presence the reason he and Midge aren’t talking about the drugs, instead of Lenny’s avoidance being the reason they aren’t talking about the drugs. He’s such a…. Shit, she’s mad. And she’s scared.

Too soon, they’re at another doorway—sorta their thing—the thick scent of sweet-and-sour sauce at their backs as they stare out into the snow. Boise and Bunny dashed out a minute ago, hoping to swing by the Wolf and take stock of the damage. Their footprints are already filling in.

Midge can feel Lenny looking at her. If she doesn’t look back… well, that might be worse than looking. So she looks.

“I can’t pretend—” she starts.

“I don’t want you to pretend you didn’t see,” he cuts her off. “You saw. I’m not hiding anything.”

That’s bullshit. Her jaw tightens as she stares back at him. There’s snow drifting into his hair, onto her eyelashes.

“You took the bag out of my hand and put it up on a shelf. You did that immediately, gut reaction.”

“Yeah, I tend to have those with you.”

The emotion behind his eyes shifts—defensive to longing. Midge raises a stern finger.

“No,” she says sharply. “I will not listen to you be charming about this. That will not work on me.”

Lenny tilts his head slightly, begging to differ.

“Don’t worry.”

“How do I do that? How do I not worry?” Midge demands.

“You know me,” he tries, gesturing to himself with the side of his hand, like he can cuff right through his own chest.

She smiles unhappily.

“I don’t.”

“Midge,” Lenny pleads.

He tries to convince her with his eyes for a minute, but his gaze lifts to her hair and he gets distracted (or is trying to distract her) sweeping the snow away. The restaurant staff start yelling at them to shut the fucking door, so they drop into the drift that hides the sidewalk and let the door bang closed.

He isn’t… hers, in any capacity. She doesn’t tell him what to do or not to do, doesn’t tell him he can show up drunk to do unpolished stand-up at a strip club or high to a showcase at Carnegie Hall. They’re always joking, but Lenny isn’t her comedy partner. He’s slept in her apartment, but he isn’t her husband. He isn’t even her boyfriend, and she’s not sure that was seriously on the table for either of them, but it’s not now because she can’t trust him for shit. This is a huge fucking problem because, at the same time, she trusts him more than most people she knows. He genuinely cares about her. She genuinely cares about him.

So she runs her hand up the front of his jacket and Lenny traps it under his palm, against his chest. The snow falls red in the light of the neon sign in the restaurant’s front window—the wrong colour for snow. If anything, the opposite colour it should be. But it is kinda pretty. Midge stands on her toes and kisses Lenny. Her shoulders are cold where his jacket is too wide and square and hovers above her bare skin.

He doesn’t seem relieved by the kiss, or suspicious of it. He kisses her exactly the same way he did in his beautiful blue hotel room, like it might have killed him if she’d left when they’d finally come so close. She takes that averted possibility much more solemnly now. What does it matter? It doesn’t; she’s kissing him the same way too.

How he holds her isn’t different now that she knows he’s been injecting himself with heroin. Physically, how he feels hasn’t changed at all. Maybe she finds a way to help him, or maybe it’s a habit he picked up to deal with his nerves about performing at Carnegie Hall. Maybe he can break that habit. Maybe none of those things will be true. God, Midge would love to be Susie’s fucking magician, projecting the future on the wall. The only wall nearby is the glass storefront of the restaurant and that wouldn’t work, would it? The projection would just shine straight through. She wouldn’t be able to see it.

Their kiss breaks apart, but they’re still hugging the back of each other’s neck, pressing their faces together. If someone were to tell her that Lenny Bruce wouldn’t do just about anything for her, she’d call that person a liar. You fall in love in New York City and get a junkie for a guardian angel.

“Your nightgown,” he murmurs.

“What?”

She opens her eyes and his are closed.

“The one you were wearing the night we both got arrested. That’s what I was thinking about.”

“When?”

“When I told them blue.”

Still not quite ready for a dozen posts about how terrible the likes of Combatants Will Be Dispatched are, sorry. Watch Vivy though, it owns. Here’s some more things that are (mostly) good. As always, worst to best.

Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki S3

Yatogame has long run out of hot Nagoya facts and its ensemble comedy never amounted to much, so now it seems mostly content to just spam more and more wacky character designs. About the only thing that it has left going for it is that 3 minutes a week are more effort to drop than to watch, so I expect them to make a movie next. 4/10

Go-toubun no Hanayome S2

Quints is a weird one. S1 was a barely good enough (i.e., well above average) implementation of the ages old harem chestnut. S2 is actually better at the core of its appeal, since it gives all the characters a sharper profile (things like taking Nino from joke to badass and making Ichika a villain are no mean feat), but it does pay a steep price for it. You see, to deliver a steady drip feed of meaningful character moments it apparently has to rush through the source material at a breakneck pace, which completely wrecks the "story" part of this story and makes every episode seem like a recap. And it still keeps wasting precious time on vestigial nonsense like its framing device and the Kyoto flashback scenario that was already the worst part of S1. But by far the most annoying aspect is its insistence on keeping all the options valid, since it prevents any real progress and makes everything seem arbitrary and pointless. So sure enough, after a season of much ado we still don't end up anywhere — you can't really raise the stakes if all at stake was "who wins" to begin with. It's watchable and even enjoyable scene-for-scene but it's getting harder and harder to call it a solid show overall. 5/10

Skate Leading Stars

I was watching this primarily because I didn't like Yuri on Ice much and wanted to see if something that is a blatant attempt to cash in on it would be better — because while YoI delivers on one aspect (being hella gay), it really is an absolute shambles of a sports show. And sure enough, Skate Leading has none of the auteur appeal of YoI, but it just works much better. In particular I appreciate how it managed to make me care even a little about a cast of assholes, which is a nice contrast to the nauseatingly ingratiating way YoI tries to make you love its characters. Also, Skate Leading is just generally cheap and unambitious, so not susceptible to trying hard and painfully flaming out on the presentation side like YoI is. But at some point you gotta let go of these comparisons and on its own Skate Leading is... just fine, I guess? Competent, mildly engaging, not very memorable. And that's probably where it loses to Yuri on Ice in the end after all, even if I think it's "better". 6/10

Idoly Pride

Idoly Pride sold itself on me with a really good (and hilarious/tragic) first episode that was just too bizarre to ignore — I mean, how can you ignore GHOST IDOL MANAGERS. Well, the majority of the show isn't like that. It's a competent and solid version of the idol franchise show, yes, but it really had more potential than that. Especially midseason, it gets lost in these dozens of characters, and while they're all likeable, it does seem like a waste of a good story just centered on Mana/Kotona/Sakura. By the end it comes back around to the heart of the matter with a Maeda-style sob story, which could be a disaster but seasoned veteran Jukki Hanada makes it work anyway. Overall, there's quite a bit of ridiculous hacky melodrama in this, but quite honestly that's the best part and I wish it would concentrate more on it. The rest is just okay. 6/10

Yuru Camp S2

Yuru Camp is still likely the best pure iyashikei show when it gets down to business. Compared to S1 though, this seems to happen less and less. At its peaks (i.e., basically any quiet moment with Rin) it's at least as good as ever, and there's some good cast additions like Mini-Inuko, but it appears that Yuru Camp simply has run out of things you can do with camping and it fills up the time with other... stuff. This stuff includes the generic school club shenanigans it was never particularly good at, and a gigantic helping of crass consumerism. Yeah, I would say the majority of Yuru Camp is just a straight up infomercial at this point, which itself ranges from the perfectly acceptable (which cute anime isn't about food constantly), to the sketchy (I don't know whether the Izu tourism board cut this production a fat check, but if they didn't, Yuru Camp still gives its best effort to make it seem that way) to the highly irritating – I am aware that camping requires gear and you can't just ignore that, but you most definitely do not require whole arcs dedicated to talking about raising funds for the purposes of acquiring the Lamp of Comfy Happiness at your friendly local Caribou™ either. Not to mention an arc where the aforementioned lame school club does the same, for double irritation. Make no mistake, this show is so riddled with scenes that beg for a solution to embed affiliate links in video files that it makes me wish I was watching something as anticapitalist and underground as Love Live. And irritating really is the last thing a show with this core concept, as stellar as it is at that, can afford to be. Bummer. 6/10

SKOO the Infinity

Skoo has one really huge asset: ADAM, its magnificent villain. It also has one really huge liability: Reki, its not magnificent protagonist. To be more specific, it's very good at anything outrageous, physics-defying and silly, such as most scenes ADAM is in, and quite bad at anything serious, dramatic (in a serious way) and down to earth, such as most scenes Reki is in. So, what's the verdict? Well, the rest of the cast is more ADAM-like, and Reki's co-protagonist Langa is fine as the straight (yeah, right) man. The tedious buddy drama is a comparatively small part of this show, and at least it pays off quite well in the end. Seriously, I was ready to give this a 6, but the final episode is probably the best one of the show, in all of its aspects. That's really not something you see often. Skoo's a great time. Except when it's not. 7/10

Non Non Biyori Nonstop

Speaking of the rare good ending, what about we gave one of those to a slim and inconsequential slice-of-life show? NNB has always been solid, comfy and amusing quality with a couple of standout moments (usually something with Renge), and Nonstop has that plus an ending as conclusive as any show of this type is ever going to have. Besides, it does a lot of things right by focusing on more characters than the central 4 (especially Konomi has great material in S3), it expands the universe just enough to not get stale, and it moves things forward — It's definitely a lot better than the movie, is what I'm saying. Apart from that, well, we're three seasons in, if you have any interest in this you probably don't need me to explain what's good about NNB at this point. Bonus points for being nothing but an ad for the manga. 7/10

Wonder Egg Priority

Oh boy, so here's the big one. Wonder Egg is the rare Meaningful Arthouse Show About Real Issues You Guys, as you might have heard. And well, the long and short of it is that it's a very good show with quite a few glaring problems (besides not actually being finished due to production issues, but what we have is enough of an ending to be able to meaningfully talk about it). In particular, one problem: WEP is, at its core, one of these metaphorical Magical Girl-ish series that are just a thin layer of abstraction over coming-of-age or societal problems. The issue is that "metaphorical" in this case means "literal" and "thin" means "basically nonexistent". This show is not subtle regarding what it's about, at all. This is a double-edged sword — on the positive side, some things really should just be said aloud, and I'm really, really fucking tired of the Ikuhara style of "here's some wacky things, maybe a blog post will eventually tell you how it's actually about the most important thing ever" obfuscation — if it's really so important, just spell it out. On the other hand, there are limits to this and when a second, different Ai appears I don't really need a voiceover line telling me that yep, this show is about parallel universes now. WEP spells out many important things, but it also spells out many things that are implicitly clear or better left vague. Not to mention that with being so obvious up front, the show's tendency to leave figuring out what it's actually saying about it up to the viewer can leave the wrong impression. Again, I settled on the opinion that it's subtle after all where it counts the most, but you might easily get the impression that it pulls its punches (Ikuhara does this the exact other way around — once you figure out what the fuck he's talking about it's abundantly clear what he's saying about it).

In fact, this show is so good at subtle, quiet character moments that it calls into question the need for big huge fighting fantasy layer in the first place, especially since I'm not a fan of the fantasy designs and the fights aren't great. Sure, they look impressive on a technical level (this show is very good looking in general), but the lack of actual impact or rhythm makes me think this is not made by people who are very familiar with action and maybe they should have asked some seasoned shounen veterans for this — or just, you know, not do it. They can (and do) impress with character acting in quiet scenes just the same. And while Ai's character story actually does pay off quite nicely by the end we got, and Momoe and Rika are also handled well, Neiru's backstory is significantly less good, not to mention the whole Frill subplot regarding the show's mythology that they introduced just before (and that's the part to be resolved at a later date), which is a huge can of worms. We'll see how well they handle that, I suppose, but as it is it's a weird and vestigial detour that doesn't add much besides thematic headaches.

But yeah, apart from all that — I like it, a lot. Great character writing in the details, cool looks for the most part, tons of ambition, and a message that I consider to be appropriately handled — for the most part, and for now. Not quite ambitious arthouse anime at its finest, but also not a pretentious disaster like Sarazanmai, Monogatari et al. 8/10
