List of Canonically Trans/gnc Characters

My own list in this post is anime, manga, games mostly but in the spreadsheet you can add anything.

Following my tierlist of them, I realized I should make a public list so theyre not just kept in my head, since I spent quite a while finding these characters. If you want to watch/play anything with trans or gnc characters, you can use this list.

They range from good rep to bad, characters viewed as "traps" or not taken seriously to ones that the whole fandom understands is trans. I've added trigger warnings to the characters and fandoms I know can be triggering. I've also put certain names in bold to show that they're a main character, but i've only watched a few on this list so some are missing.

I would add trigger warnings for "bury your gays" and similar tropes, but I want to avoid spoilers. Maybe you can look it up first if you're worried. I've tried to exclude characters that are referred to as hermaphrodites.

The "crossdressers" section obviously includes some spoilers.

An Apology to Ossan's Love and The Novelist

I'm writing this post today as a formal apology to both Ossan's Love and The Novelist for avoiding them in 2018-2019 due to general negative fandom takes about them. Both shows are great, and I should have watched them six years ago.

I recently watched the Pornographer series thanks to @lurkingshan burning some of her coupons to make me properly engage with the series. In that series I found one of the most compelling expressions of internalized homophobia I’ve ever seen. Rio was not only cut off from being sexual with other people, but he felt like he couldn’t even be a proper man.

Later, in Mood Indigo, we got to see the messed-up way Rio became an erotic novelist but also finally seemed to connect with an important part of himself. He also found a mentor who, despite his proclivities, became an important paternal figure to Rio.

Finally, in Playback, Rio finally faced his own insecurities and accepted that Haruhiko loves him and reciprocated it. At every stage of this story, they are able to communicate so much of their story through the sex that’s happening. We’re applauding depictions of sex happening in the genre now that this series was doing half a decade ago.

I decided to give Ossan’s Love a second try when I saw @isaksbestpillow getting so excited about the second season and providing context for the original show. With Ossan’s Love, I understand why people might have bounced off this series right away. A lot of folks don’t enjoy the way the Japanese do comedy, Haruta is intentionally unlikeable at the beginning, and I’ve seen concerns about the boss either being a predator or that his feelings would be treated as a joke.

Thankfully, I tend to enjoy Japanese comedy and found the show hilarious! I was laughing out loud almost every single episode because of multiple characters, but most especially Yoshida Kotaro as the boss. This show generated so much of its comedy from the core characterization of each character, so every joke landed so smoothly for me.

Something I really liked about this show was that it never said we were wrong for disliking Haruta for being a mess and a slob. He cannot take care of himself, and he barely gets better at it before the end of the show. I like that Maki breaking up with him didn’t make him suddenly straighten up his ways about this and become a fully-functioning housekeeper, but he did get better about doing some chores even as the chief started taking care of him. Haruta isn’t the easiest character to like on the domestic front, but he is good at his job and he is a kind character. I like that you have to figure out why these guys like the mess that is Haruta, because I like the audience has to think about what in men that gay people find attractive. Is that a rosy-eyed read? Yes. I don’t are.

As for the boss, he never uses his position over Haruta, and they’re also in sales. It’s not as egregious to me as it would feel in other positions. I also like that his attraction to Haruta isn’t a joke, but the fact that he’s older and maybe isn’t speaking the language of the youth is very funny. He’s an extremely endearing character and I love Kurosawa Musashi.

So, this is my apology to both of these shows for letting negative fan opinions stop me from facing these shows properly. Both of them were great. I’m currently working through the Ossan’s Love: In the Sky season to get to the movie and new show.

Yoshida Keita was excited. He finally got a better paying job than his previous one. Keita sat down at his desk, ignoring the whispers he heard from his coworkers.

Kobayashi quickly turned the attention over to herself, “me too!! Beautiful bodies!! Right?? Just like women! The human body is so beautiful!!! Let’s go get coffee!! Nakamura-San, do you want coffee!? Actually, does everyone want coffee?!?”

Nakamura, the woman who sat beside them simply said yes. A few others agreed. Kobayashi looked over to Furukawa, who looked on the verge of laughing. His lips were pursed as his eyes crinkled, before he nodded out a yes.

Kobayashi mentally counted on who said yes and quickly dragged Keita to the kitchen that was thankfully a few steps away with a door to close behind themselves.

“Yoshida-San! You have to be careful!” Kobayashi shook her head, getting the coffees ready.

Keita was honestly shocked. “You don’t care…?”

“Why would I? What you do in your bedroom is none of my concern.” She said matter-of-factly, getting a cart ready to carry the drinks back.

Keita simply hummed. Honestly, he wasn’t expecting her to be so nice. His mother kept telling him to be careful who he told and that the wrong person could ruin his entire life.

And yet, this lady was so nice.

“Oh but, why did you ask if I’m free tonight?”

“Ah, a few people want to treat Furukawa-San to a couple of beers! Y’know, since it’s his first week here.” Kobayashi said, grabbing a couple of snacks to bring as well.

Keita hummed. “Is he new?”

“Yes, he transferred from another department. He’s a handsome man, right? I was shocked that he was almost forty.”

“Forty?!”

“Shush! He might hear!”

Keita nodded, covering his mouth as she finished up the coffees.

“So, are you free for tonight then?”

“Ah, yes. I’ll come.” Keita said.

“Let’s go back now.” Kobayashi said, letting Keita push the cart. Just as she was about to open the door, she stopped for a moment. “Yoshida-San,”

“Eh?”

“Try to mask your looks better. You were looking at Furukawa-San as if he was a piece of meat.”

Keita wanted to huddle into a ball and cry in the corner.

“Furukawa-San! Are you okay with a couple of beers tonight? It’s Saturday tomorrow!” One coworker said as they all began to pack up for the night.

Furukawa looked a bit hesitant but smiled, “ah, just this once,” he began to pack up as well.

Kobayashi smirked at Keita, a wink thrown his way. Keita could feel himself blush. He honestly felt like a high school student again who wanted to confess to their senpai.

The restaurant they were at was thankfully mostly empty. Keita was mainly silent the entire time. Everyone paid most attention to Furukawa, asking him what he did before or if he was married.

Keita was lucky enough to be sitting across from Furukawa at the table. He rested his chin in his hand as he simply watched as Furukawa dodged any question that he deemed too personal.

Much to Keita’s stupidity, he didn’t notice how Furukawa got more flustered whenever he could feel Keita’s eyes on him.

Kobayashi simply sighed to herself. A bunch of stupid gays.

It was getting close to midnight when Furukawa was most obviously wasted. A giggle left his lips, earning a squeal from a few of the women.

“Ok! Everyone is ready to go? What train are you guys taking?” Kobayashi asked.

The others began to make plans with who they’ll walk with if they were taking the same train. And in some weird sense of twisted fate, Keita and Kobayashi was taking the same train as Furukawa.

“Ah, then you guys can get him home safe?” Nakamura said, quickly getting up.

Keita was ready to refuse but Kobayashi answered for him. “Yes! Let’s go before the last train is gone!”

Kobayashi and Keita had to basically drag Furukawa to the train station. Furukawa was a giggling mess, talking about how they should use his first name.

Kobayashi began to do so just to humor him. “(Name)-San, will you be okay with Keita-Kun taking you home?”

“Eh?”

“Keita?” Oh god his name sounded good from his mouth. “Hm, Keita, take me home, Hm?” (Name) giggled, leaning more of his weight on Keita.

(Name) had to be around 5’7. His head met Keita’s lips directly. Oh, a perfect height for forehead kisses!!

He pushed the thought away. “You say hm a lot, Furukawa-San.”

“Yah!! I said call me (Name)!! (Name)!!” He whined, earning attention from a few people on the train station as they waited for the last train.

“We should all use first names! We got so close so quickly, right, Keita-Kun?” Momo grinned.

“Eh, yes…” Keita didn’t really believe that but if this was how he would finally make meaningful friends so be it.

“Alright, you can take him home then!” Momo said, letting go of (Name). Keita quickly held up (Name) staring at her in shock.

“Oi! You said you take this train!!”

“I do but I’m going to stay at a friend’s tonight. You enjoy (Name)-San! Use protection~!” She giggled, skipping away.

Keita wasn’t sure if he was happy or scared. Okay yeah he wanted (Name) but if he was supposed to just have to confidence for it Momo was certainly mistaken.

He was just going to get (Name) home and then go masturbate in his own home!

(Name) blinked, slowly turning around to stare at him in shock. Informal speech?! To a man that was his boss no less? He pursed his lips to reprimand Keita until his eyes widened in shock.

Banana fish re-review ~

I did a rewatch of banana fish and oh my God I forgot how good this series was. Considering the original manga came out in the 80's in JAPAN, it was SO ahead of its time. One of the best depictions of gay characters I've ever seen in Japanese media, even by today's standards.

Some more silly thoughts:

Like yoshida just casually dropped a manga with an insanely progressive take on the bl genre by showing a complex queer interracial relationship with incredibly well-written characters. Honestly the fact that ash and eiji's relationship wasn't explicitly defined as romantic is a plus imo. Not being able to rely on obvious romantic gestures like kissing, hand-holding, romantic confessions, etc. actually forces the writer to develop their relationship without that crutch to lean on. That's why ash and eiji's relationship is so good, because it doesn't rely on surface-level romance to get across the fact that they love each other and instead use subtlety and little nuances in their interactions. It's obvious from the subtext and how much they're shown to care for each other.

Not to mention the great depiction of black characters (I know portraying black characters non-offensively is like, the bare minimum, but may I remind you this is the EIGHTIES in JAPAN, and there are so many CURRENT animes that have an issue with it).

I mean yea does it have its flaws? Sure. Ash's admittedly very lame "lynx" title that comes with many wildcat metaphors, eiji being a bit passive in the first half, sort of cringe portrayal of America, etc. but my God the way she handles the trauma and character dynamics is incredible.

Ok so I did have a uh... Not really a criticism but something that I noticed that got me thinking. I feel like some shows use dark subject matter as a bit of an easy way to evoke an emotional reaction from the audience. Sometimes authors give characters horrible backstories as a way to make the audience THINK the character is complex and interesting but in reality it's a bit of a lazy writing tactic. Low effort high reward kind of thing. Banana fish obviously does have brutal subject matter and ash is really put through the ringer, but I love that yoshida doesn't let that become the axis of his character. He has trauma that greatly impacts him, but he's also super developed on his own apart from that. When I think about Ash's character, I don't immediately think about the traumatic backstory parts. The balance between how significantly the trauma affects him vs making sure that's not the ONLY part of his character is extremely well-executed.

Scenes that stuck out to me (not including asheiji ones bc it goes without saying theyre all amazing)

- the interrogator playing Ash's tapes after being arrested ("later, movie star" was the most brutal line ever omg)

- max burning the photos of ash (underrated moment this was SO good),

- any and all interactions between sing and blanca (they're such an unlikely duo peak comedy right there)

- the convo between sing and yut lung in the last episode

- ash stabbing the guy in the dick with a fork

- callback to ^^^, ash stabbing the banana with a fork

- Ash's breakdown in front of dino (ep 19 I believe)

- the entirety of ash escaping from the "mental hospital" and then having to go rescue ibe and max lmaooo

- ash brutally murdering Abraham(?, the redhead guy) by blowing abt a thousand holes in him w a machine gun as payback for shorter

- ash shooting shorter

- running joke of max being Ash's dad

- everyone constantly manhandling yut lung by yanking on his hair (dude get a haircut)

- ash immediately going to shoot himself no hesitation after yut lung told him he wouldn't hurt eiji if he did so (technically asheiji but I'm keeping it since this was a yut lung and ash scene)

- "what does this picture look like?" "Your wife"

- eiji's cute stupid little outfit he wore when he went to go find shorter in Chinatown

I also have a confession:

I LOVE yut lung. Him being paralleled with ash, but instead of finding love he let hate consume him because he had no one unlike ash who had eiji was just devastating but in a good way.

So yea those are my messy thoughts after finishing it. I'd argue that it was probably one of the best pieces of queer media to exist at the time. In the world. And one of my personal favorite pieces of queer media ever.

I HAVE SO MANYYYY HE MAKES ME SO SAD. Warnings for sexual assault talk

particularly just how tragic he is and framed as comedy (meant to be realized is tragic, but csm fans tend to have no reading comprehension💔) like ermmm when his FAMILY IS BEING HELD HOSTAGE? and he desperately offers sexual favors to ensure their safety like people seeing that and going “haha woah what!!” or “denji gay moments!” or whatever like yes I think he is bisexual but that is literally not a moment for evidence for that, he is desperate and willing to do anything to help his family and we KNOW his relationship with sexuality.

Denji is 16 at the start, he’s going through puberty, he’s horny. That’s not a bad thing and is actually really fun to explore! It’s a central part of his character that he just wanted to touch boobs and have sex and a girlfriend, but what ISNT silly is how that is directly what causes him to get groomed and assaulted over and over (groomed I use mostly just for makima, himeno is on the fence for it I think she just took advantage of him and then. Sexually assaulted him like twice) Denji’s had no family for the vast majority of his life and has had little contact with other people in a normal way, he’s had no way to process or experience desire whether it be sexual or romantic or just desire for things in general. He struggles (and I believe he’s not even conscious of it) to differentiate between these types of feelings because the only time he’s done that was with pochita! And it makes sense he wouldn’t wanna fuck his dog like. Duh.

But he’s so continuously taken advantage of and manipulated that even in recent chapters when he’s sorted through some things and has visibly REALIZED he needs to be treated better and with respect, you can see him revert back to those traumatic habits and responses because he’s desperate! And you can see he’s not fucking happy when these examples of reversion occur! He feels bad, but because characters are laughing at him or what he says “feels” (“feels” because tbh like it’s realistic when you think about it!) out of pocket and surprises the audience, it’s viewed as funny!

Literally my friend, when the chapter of him offering to tongue yoshida’s ass for a week to keep his family safe, was laughing! And that’s like ok initially I guess bc yeah it’s vulgar and sudden but it’s so sad! Chainsaw man has a funny name so “it’s a comedy,” or someone literally just tried telling me it’s a “tragic romcom” like!!! Csm is not a sad romantic comedy!! Denji is groomed, sexually assaulted, manipulated, taken advantage of, the list goes on!! None of his romantic encounters are ever (save for asa) just Kind Of Sad. Csm is the story of a victim over and over again and it’s explicit about that!! The comedy comes from silly moments that are semi frequent, but overall it’s a tragedy, like ohhhh my god denji makes me so fucking upset

Random femAkeshu Pokemon AU lore I couldn’t include in Dark Void for various reasons:

- Akechi becomes the ghost type Elite Four member. She keeps Ceruledge, Mimikyu, Decidueye, and Marowak on the team, but also rotates other ghost types she obtains later during various adventures with Akira.

Among these are a Dhelmise (a callback to Shido’s ship in canon), Gengar, Spiritomb, Banette (throwbacks to her childhood due to their lore as abandoned or resentful creatures), and a Sableye named Kurusu she captured as payback for Corviknight’s supposedly stupid pun nickname. Also she does not mention Kurusu’s name until it gets into trouble and she can call Kurusu an idiot, to Akira’s confusion. Akira thinks it’s petty. Akechi thinks it’s justice.

- She catches a Torracat as well, evolves it into Incineroar, and once again another one of her Pokemon pursues one of Akira’s (Meowscarada this time) romantically. Even the cats are gay.

- Akira keeps Zebstrika, newly nicknamed Loki. For once, Akechi approves of a nickname. Nerd. You don’t even have Norse mythology in your universe.

- The other Elite Four are Sae (Ice), Iwai (Steel), and Chihaya (Psychic). Shido was previously Dragon.

- Gym Leaders as of the fic: Ann (Fire), Yoshida (Rock), Hifumi (Water), Kawakami (Normal), Ryuji (Electric), Makoto (Fighting), Ichinose (Dark), Lavenza (Fairy). Kamoshida and Kaneshiro were previously gym leaders before Ann and Ryuji. Since Makoto was already a gym leader, I let Ryuji take Kaneshiro’s spot.

- Team Ark’s goal was simplistic control over as many regions as possible, and were led by Shido. Shido previously destroyed Akira’s life similarly to canon, so she ran away from home and helped Sojiro at Leblanc. I didn’t pick a singular region for this because I decided it was its own, despite basing the fic mostly in Sinnoh. They globe trot much like the Journeys and Horizons anime.

- Akira doesn’t travel with everyone everywhere like in canon once she befriends them, but some usually accompany her for awhile. Ann and Ryuji journeyed with her after she helped stop Kamoshida because he kidnapped Shiho, a Pokemon breeder and Ann’s girlfriend.

- Madarame was a patron of the Lilycove museum who supposedly painted everything he submitted. Truthfully, Yusuke was painting every contest star submission himself, and lived in poverty at Madarame’s house. Akira, Ryuji, and Ann saved him, he helped Akira with Team Ark in return too.

- Kaneshiro owned the game corner and was a gym leader. He had a bigger hand in Shido’s Team Ark, like a mini boss such as Saturn or Courtney, for example. Makoto nearly outed Akira to the police despite Shido having them under his thumb, because he threatened her city (his gym neighbored his?. However, she decided she couldn’t let injustice slide, and helped her reveal the game corner and Team Ark’s corruption.

- Futaba and Akira were already friends in this AU. She is the PC storage system creator known as Medjed, but she ran into some trouble thanks to a Cofagrius haunting her house. Akira and Akechi were the ones who saved her, solidifying Akira’s trust in Akechi.

- Akira and Akechi traveled together a decent bit, to solidify their bond. They battled regularly, with a pretty even win-loss ratio once Akira got the hang of things. Akechi lied about her Pokemon on hand sometimes “just in case.”

- Okumura was killed by Akechi still in this AU, the same way she attempted to kill Akira. 🫡 HOWEVER, an Okumura power plant was the casualty instead of a spaceship palace, and in the process several Pokemon nearby were injured or killed—including Cubone’s mother. The weight of orphaning something so defenseless the same way she had been after losing her mother chipped at her walls, so Akechi took in Cubone as an apology. It wasn’t enough to change her fate, but Cubone loves her, and she loves Cubone.

- Haru retired from Okumura Corp to open a Pokemon cafe after Team Ark collapses. Shes tired and deserves it

- Kasumi is in a coma after an accident—I still haven’t decided if she’s dead or not. Sumire loses her mind a little bit thanks to Maruki’s totally ethical experiments (lie), and takes on Kasumi’s goal to become the greatest coordinator. She only goes into recovery after the Darkrai and Cresselia incident. Thanks for nothing, Maruki

- Lavenza gave Akira her Zorua, who was the one to fool Akechi at Dragonspire Tower via illusions while Akira rushed to claim Zekrom.

- Zenkichi is in the Officer Jenny role. He has dozens of lookalike relatives, and Akira claims she can’t tell them apart. Takemi is in the Nurse Joy role with dozens of lookalike relatives, and Akira can tell all of them apart with ease. Zenkichi doesn’t know if he’s being pranked or not and he’ll never find out.

- Akira’s Polteageist is on loan from Sojiro, except Sojiro loans it forever. He hopes that kid is safe now

- Shinya is a bug catcher who taught Akira some of those stupid strategies you’d see Ash use in the anime. Akechi is MALDING that they work, by the way.

- Ohya is a reporter much like Gabby and Ty. She exchanges tips about Team Ark with Akira, despite Akira never directly telling her she’s the one committing crimes constantly to bust worst crimes.

- I can’t stop thinking of Akechi just vibing but visibly only there for Akira. It’s like when Piccolo starts hanging out with Goku’s crew because of Gohan, except like with a mean lesbian human. Why did I choose this analogy? Idk!

- Mishima owns a Gimmighoul. I don’t know what else to add here

Ann is the tallest girl among the Phantom Thieves, santing at 5'5! (In my head she is taller than Ren but shh)

If you take the thieves to darts, the worst player in the gang is surprisingly not Morgana, but Sumire! Don't ask me how she's worse than a cat!

In P5 (including royal), Ann is the only romance option to directly say "I love you" to the protagonist without cutting herself off* (and, i'm half sure, she's one of the few direct kisses a protagonist receives in a persona game) and honestly? good for them ily ann im so gay for her *Sumire says it too, even before being romanced, but it's not a complete "i love you", per se. She stutters through her confession and Ren has to finish it for her because she's so flustered, which is pretty cute i'll be real but in terms of Saying it, it technically doesn't count.

Sho Minazuki (yknow, the guy from the arena games) was originally meant to be the protagonist for P5! This is massively implied in ending dialogue for the Arena games, as well as how similar the two look if you, like, dye his hair black. Also if you recall the original Femc for P5 with the neon red hair…

Sumire lives with her dad, that much is obvious, but the Royal artbook reveals she also lives with her grandma and her mother!

Among all the non-party-member confidants in P5 (including royal), only 5 find out Ren's identity as a Phantom Thief through something else other than a mementos request. These are Maruki, Yoshida, Sojiro, Mishima, and Sae

The Featherman series is a Power Rangers style anime that airs in the inner universe of the series. Contrary to what the Dancing games make us believe, There's always only 5 Feather soldiers that are part of the main crew: Pink Argus, Red Hawk, Black Condor, Yellow Owl, and Blue Swan. These names, however, are sometimes interchanged between "generations" of the show.

Actually lemme go on a tangent (you asked for fun facts you're GETTING fun facts) There are three generations of the Featherman show to date: OG Featherman (persona 2), Featherman R (Persona 3), and Featherman V (P4 and the Arena games). There's actually a change in the naming semantics every new generation of Featherman. For example, take this excerp from the wiki: "Red Eagle (from Featherman), Feather Hawk (from Featherman R and/or Neo Featherman), Feather Red (from Featherman V)" So in P2, the naming convention is "[Color] [Bird name]", in P3 it's "Feather [bird name]" and in P4 it's "Feather [color]"

Sumire, piror to the third semester, is only ever called by her last name, Yoshizawa, by everyone aside from Ren, Morgana and Futaba. This is a very a subtle way to show something's up with her and i gasped when i first found out about it.

Ok fine enough P5 facts have a P3 fact. It's kinda well known im pretty sure but Makoto Yuki's barrage of official names include, also, Sakuya Shiomi from the stageplay. Sakuya means "blossom" or "bloom". Hey do you recall that he dies in March 5th? yknow, when spring starts? Cherry trees. you get it

Back to P5, Tactica reveals that Haru used to indulge in chopping firewood when she was younger. Her dad didn't like that for her, but he never tried to stop her. This probably leads to her having an Axe as part of her Phantom Thief artillery.

Did you know Fuuka and Futaba actually become friends in the Dancing games? They sadly don't remain friends after losing their memories post-game but Fuuka knew her as Alibaba, and Futaba knew her as Lucia :) I hope they became friends online again

In the jazz jin in Royal, Futaba reveals that the retro console you use to play games was hers, and that she'd sold it to the shop in Yongen. Also apparently the busted laptop you buy there was Haru's! (fact also revealed in the Jazz Jin)

Oh boy. If you're here on my account then you probably already know who I am and how absolutely insane I am for them, but I'm gonna ramble anyway LOL thanks for giving me the opportunity to show people on Tumblr how insane I am ‼✌😁 If people who don't know me from twitter find this, hi I'm TK! I may be a little deranged for Yoshiden, just a tiny bit y'know- Yoshiden means a lot to me for various reasons but I'll just put down all my insane ramblings down belowwww [CSM Spoilers if anime onlys/new readers find this post somehow] [Serious Section] -Denji's distrust/disliking for men/straight up internalized homophobia is most likely because of his past abusers being male (the mafia and his father), so if he starts to trust Yoshida throughout the course of part 2 and they end up forming an actual bond, whether it's romantic or platonic, it kind of helps Denji get over his distrust and help him cope with that trauma knowing that hey not all dudes are that bad actually, this guy's pretty nice. (You could say that Beam already did that and they had a good bond too but Beam is... y'know... *finger across neck* bleh... and Denji still emphasizes he wouldn't let a dude sit on him in 104 so...)

-Surprise surprise, I'm in on the bi Denji agenda because I'm bisexual and all my favs have to be bi 😁😁/hj But seriously, bi Denji is a pretty good concept cause aside from getting rid of his internalized homophobia, it also helps him get over/cope with his trauma as I said above. Part 1 was all about Denji learning about different kinds of love (familial love from the Hayakawa family, romantic love from Reze, and the mess that is sexual->maternal->abusive love from Makima, etc etc), so exploring his sexuality in part 2 could be a nice little addition to that. (Bonus points for the new kind of familial love he has for Nayuta now that he's her older brother/father figure; bonus BONUS points if Yoshida's the other dad LOL) [Delusional Absolutely Normal Section] -Yoshida's canonically a pretty boy as stated by another guy, so maybe if Denji stares at him long enough he'll realize guys can be as pretty as girls too and think it's fine to find guys attractive LMAO

-We all agree Yoshida's gay or at least mspec mlm leaning/preference right? Right. -Anyway, I'M A TOTAL SUCKER FOR ONE-SIDED LOVE STORIES LOL I'd like to think Yoshida has coworkers who could've taken the job of watching over Denji but he deliberately asked to do the job because he found him cute back in part 1, though realistically he probably only got chosen for the job cause he knew about Denji's identity already and he's also in high school, but we're not here for realism, we're here for gay people. (Gay people being Hirofumi Yoshida.) (Did you see him at the table with Angel while Denji and Power were talking about barf and stuff? Dude was smiling while listening to them talk about random shit, he probably became interested in Denji then and there; hell, even the goddamn onigiri scene where Denji still eats it after it fell to the ground probably made him go 'woah this guy is sick in the head I'm in love') Back to the one sided thing, the idea of Yoshida being willing to die while protecting Denji is???? insane??? and I love it because it really shows how devoted he is not only to his job but to Denji in general. He's never truly lost his temper at Denji, even when he used his bare hands on the cake, even when he let himself get sat on by girls, and even how he only wants to reveal himself as Chainsaw Man just to get a girlfriend. Sure, he called him hopeless in the recent chapter, but he never raised his voice or fought back. He's always trying to be patient with him even when he's being completely ridiculous. Copypasting what I've said on twitter here: If someone started scooping and eating the cake I bought with their bare hands, I wouldn't just sit there and go "Aaaaaah!", I'd definitely get pissed. Yoshida has FEELINGS for this boy, I swear. He said NOTHING about it. NOTHING. No "Why the hell'd you do that?" or "Dude that's gross" OR ANYTHING, he immediately just goes back to talking about trying to prevent Denji from revealing his identity. If someone I liked, however, would eat cake with their bare hands, I'd just be embarrassed but also find it cute so I'd let it slide. (Tested and proven 👍)

If, miraculously, Yoshida canonically confesses to Denji, he'd probably still pine for him even if Denji turns him down, which he probably will. Yoshida realizes, after being his bodyguard for a while, that he really enjoys Denji and being around him; he'd get too attached to those feelings and still shower him with appreciation even if he knows it'll never be reciprocated. Just knowing that Denji's being given the love he deserves is enough for him, even if Denji doesn't want or care about that love. It's the Buddy for April 22nd! He's wearing the Capricorn Cloth (being a capricorn himself) of the classic Masami Kurumada manga Saint Seiya.

I loved Saint Seiya. I have all the paperbacks, even, I liked it when I was a kid. It's an interesting manga, in that it doesn't make much sense in retrospect, but when you're reading it, you're more interested in the beat of the plot than in the big picture.

The plot, as I understand, is that this rich girl Saori is the reincarnation of the goddess Athena, so her dad arranged for ten boys to get trained to be her protectors (the saints), wearing bronze armors based on traditional constellations. Then they get into a martial arts tournment to win an actual gold cloth, but complications start making it so they need to stop fighting amongst themselves, and start fighting actual bad guys.

In a way, it's a very toyetic story - each character has their own unique armor (or cloth) which is fits both them, and can be assembled to resemble its constellation, so kids had a lot of expensive toys to collect. And since the golden cloths (belonging to the strongest saints) are based on the twelve zodiac signs, kids already have a favorite character picked out for them.

Me, I'm an Aquarius, so my favorite was Aquarius Camus. The one with the ice powers. He also won a Literature Nobel, you know. But I never related to him, really. He's an ice guy, which is cool I guess, but, not the power I'd choose.

The manga's also very camp. The art's really old-fashioned, looking almost like sometihng from Tatsuo Yoshida's generation. Not a lot of attention is paid to proportions and depth, and the fight scenes are not dynamic. But that's one of the things I like about it, to be honest. It feels like there's a closer dialog between the artist and the reader when the art is so direct. It's the opposite of something like the manga version of One-Punch Man, for instance.

And the designs of the cloths, characters and enemies is also pretty unique, it's got that simplified design quality of eighties manga that's not as popular anymore.

One aspect that Saint Seiya, like Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, isn't shy about is the gay subtext regarding some characters... it's most obvious with Andromeda Shun and Pisces Aphrodite, but also Virgo Shaka, Aries Mu... it's an intentional aspect of the story, but when me and my friends were kids watching it, we thought it was pretty "gross".

Even though it doesn't really make sense and it's pretty much designed to appeal to kids' love of shiny stuff and fight scenes, Saint Seiya is one of my favorite franchises. I'll be honest, I didn't know much about greek mythology when I first watched the anime, so I assumed a lot of the stuff Kurumada made up was actual part of ancient Greek myth. Still makes no sense why Capricorn Shura had the power of Excalibur, though... what does Excalibur have to do with Capricorn? Should be a Draco thing, or even Ursa Major...

Living With Him Ep 2 Stray Thoughts

Last week, two childhood friends that had grown apart moved in together before their freshman year of college at the insistence of their mom. Natsukawa is excited about being on his own and not being so responsible for chores and child care anymore. Kazuhito seems quite gay for Natsukawa and very happy about this new arrangement.

In the course of getting to know each other again, Natsukawa was surprised to learn that Kazuhito is single, and wanted to figure out why women keep dumping him. He decided they should hang out on what was absolutely a date day and see the neighborhood. They went to the batting cages and to a furniture store. We also got to see Kazuhito take care of Natsukawa when he caught a cold. I'm sold.

I thought Kazuhito couldn't cook? I guess he can do simple breakfasts.

He wants to learn to cook more! I love this man.

Kazuhito's friends definitely have heard about Natsukawa. Not sure if Haruna already clued in on Kazuhito being queer, but he and Yoshida seem to know something.

"Yoshida is good looking." "Oh, is that so?" This man, I tell you. I love the "letting you in" type.

Did Kazuhito choose to work at an Italian restaurant because of Natsukawa?

So Yoshida is one of these exes, Natsukawa definitely can see what's going on with Kazuhito, and Haruna is clearly having a great time watching this.

I am so into Kazuhito. I will not let this preview lead me astray. I like the friends so far. They're nosy in a way people who've been watching someone pine for a long time can be.

Don't you think it's funny cause actual canon gay characters in BL manga will say "I love you" but only the shounen bromance can spew out some of the most romantic shit akin to a 19th century poet writing a letter expressing his surpressed love for his lover 😭.....

Some of the lines of shounen manga between two boys are insane, and definitely why they get themed promise jewellery, lmao

But on a serious note, I'd say its because of genre expectation. There's definitely a ~ vibe ~ around BL manga (the same as the vibe around yaoi) and what the audience expects from it and its characters. BL carries an atmosphere and connotation that Shoujo doesn't. It's kind of why I'm reluctant to actually explore it that much. (I keep almost starting Sasaki to Miyano, but the fact it is labelled BL kinda puts me off.)

In that light, I can see why things like Yoshida insisting Banana Fish isn't BL happen - especially around the time it was originally published. That being said, the love story is so intrinsically baked into Ash and Eiji's relationship that you can't not read it like that. (Not without a lot of effort.)

And I kind of prefer that to an 'I love you.' There's something about not saying it, and leaving it as subtext, that I enjoy more. Probably for the same reason at the 19th century poet - it means more. It's says more.

I've been Banana Fish centric, but the same applies to things like Vanitas no Carte and Moriarty the Patriot too. There's something special about not needing to say it outright.

Maybe that's just because I've been on tumblr for so long that queerbaiting and subtext is what I'm most used to, and, honestly, get a little nostalgic for.
