Levant history/present situation question: do you know why Egypt isn't taking in refugees from Gaza? Thanks for offering to answer questions

Hey! Sorry this took so long for me to answer; I just had a 72-hour work week and my brain was spaghetti. Let’s see what I can do here.

So first, I’m going to say a lot of this is going to be educated guesses because there’s a lot that’s unknown. With that said, I don’t think any of these guesses are unreasonable.

To begin with, Egypt’s stated reason is that they think if Palestinians are allowed to settle in Egypt, they’ll never be able to go back to Israel. I think this is true, as far as it goes; that’s certainly a valid concern about the current war.

With that said, I don’t think that’s the only reason. Until 1967, Egypt actually controlled the Gaza Strip; it lost possession thereof in the Six-Day War, which Israel initiated after Egypt blockaded all shipping to Israel. What it discovered during that time is that Palestine is difficult to maintain, manage, or rule; Israel offered to return the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt after its victory in the war but didn’t include Gaza in this offer, and Egypt didn’t fight for it. I suspect at least part of the lessons they learned before 1967 lead to their reluctance now. (Incidentally, Jordan also learned this lesson. They expelled their Palestinians and stopped trying to retake the West Bank around the same time.)

Palestinians also have a tendency to bring terrorism with them when they move. They’ve been expelled from several countries as a result, including Kuwait, where they backed Saddam Hussein’s invasion and annexation attempt. I’d imagine this plays a role, as well; the big players in Gaza (mostly Hamas these days) are open admirers of terrorism. Egypt has a peace agreement with Israel, and taking in a group known to commit pogroms and to have endorsed genocide of the Jewish people would probably not go over well for them, especially given the US backs Israel.

The third reason I suspect is at play is one that does disservice to Israelis and Palestinians both, and it’s another reason the UN and UNWRA are hopelessly corrupt. Let me show you three people living in America:

This is Ahmed. His parents were targeted in Afghanistan by al-Qaeda in the 1990s, and fled to America. Here, Ahmed put down roots, and applied for citizenship when he was 22.

This is a second Ahmed. His grandparents fled Iran when the Ayatollah took power. His parents were born in the US, and so was Ahmed.

This is a third Ahmed. His great-grandparents left Israel-Palestine during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. Ahmed’s grandparents, parents, and Ahmed himself were all born on US soil. Ahmed has never set foot in the MENA region—not Palestine, not Israel, not Egypt or Iraq or Iran or Sudan or ANYWHERE. He grew up in a middle-class home in Illinois and speaks no Arabic; indeed, the only reason he has an Arabic name is because he was named for his grandfather. His friends mostly call him Eddie. Ahmed has expressed little to no interest in Palestine.

One of the three Ahmeds is considered a refugee by the UN. Do you know which one?

Palestinians are the only group on earth for whom this is true, by the way. If you’re a refugee from anywhere else, you stop being a refugee the moment you get citizenship in a new country, and only people who actually fled a country—not their descendants born elsewhere—are considered refugees. Hell, Palestinians BORN IN GAZA OR THE WEST BANK AND STILL LIVING THERE are considered refugees. You literally cannot be of Palestinian descent and not be a refugee.

So my suspicion for the actual biggest reason is this special treatment Palestinians receive from the UN. Egypt would be in a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don’t situation in which giving the Palestinians citizenship would be seen as “ceding to Israel” but not doing so would be “contributing to the plight of Palestinians,” and no amount of aid they provided would ever be considered enough. Frankly if I was the leader of a country I wouldn’t want to take them in under those conditions either. (Hence why I say the UN is doing a disservice to the Palestinians with this—they’re disincentivizing countries that might otherwise help.)

So there you have it: their stated reason and also what I think are some reasonable suppositions as to further reasons.

To be perfectly honest with you I am surprised the twins are... somewhat functioning persons after all the shit they went through. I mean, they are barely functional, and 5 was just one massive mental breakdown for both of them but still! They remain Somewhat sane which is very hard to believe to tell the truth, and they really need years of extensive therapy (...also any therapist they go to will need therapy themselves after a session with the twins, I feel sorry for the poor soul).

All of this is to say that this is my ask and I don't want the twins to suffer too much)

this is also the reason I side with the 'twins have normal human lifespan' answer in Raven's poll, because Sparda Luck has had nothing good in store for them ever, and prolonging their years means risking their fragile mental health even more. they just really need a leave/retire at this point and my wish for them is to live their years in relative peace

I'l go over the twins briefly as I don't want them to go through shit again, the canon was cruel enough towards them. Nero is their weak spot. Nero is extremely important to the twins, because he is the physical manifestation of hope for their future. Before 5 the answer to this question would have been each other, as the pain of being the lone brother has been familiar for each of them and has been festering for decades at this point, but it all changed in 5. The ending of 5 shows rekindling of their brotherhood, it it was only possible thanks to Nero, as in 5 both of them were so exhausted they wanted just to end everything*

*I've discussed this with Raven, and we bounced around the idea that the circumstances of twins 'mutual agreement for the end' was not so mutual in details. Vergil was exhausted and had no idea what to do next, except have one last great stand with his brother, and to force Dante's hand to end him. But to bait Dante into doing that, he had to go all out during their battle, so Dante kind of rightfully assumed Vergil was out for his blood. Again. DMC3 tragic parallels my beloved.

I doubt Vergil realised how badly this was all going for Dante, or the consequences of such action on his twin. Though Dante absolutely knew he could not live with himself after ending Vergil again, and that's exactly why he left the deed (= inheritance for Nero) behind before going on this hunt. He thought it would be his last.

It would be curious to see Vergil's reaction to that information, I think if he learns of the deed he'll piece the puzzle himself, and then there is going to be an Interesting conversation between the twins. I doubt Vergil would have gone through with his plan if he knew the toll it would take on Dante, and Vergil never wanted his brother dead.

Nero is the twins future. He gave them a deserved slap as a wake up call, he reminded them of the possibilities the future could hold, while twins only ever look to the past. They found kinship in their shared respect and fondness of Nero, this is their starting point to heal.

Loosing another after 5 would be, of course, extremely painful for either of them (arguably worse for Dante, as his mental state is pretty much in shambles in 5, and Vergil was the same before that, literally in his case, but he has new page now, he just has trouble figuring out what to do with it), but with Nero's help they just might be able to pull through.

But if anything happened to Nero himself? I don't think twins, even with their bond rekindled would be truly able to come back from that. So yeah, the twins' weak spot is Nero.

Nero`s weakspot is obviously family, however much has been much kinder to him in that aspect than the twins. He grew up loved and cared for in his adopted family, but with his own isues of course. While Nero had not knew Dante&Vergil for very long, he certainly does take after his uncle&father (must be the Sparda heritage) in term of issues, because Nero combines the twins' together! Nero struggles simultaniously with self-worth and the need for recognition, which I reckon, will give him A Time while the twins are gone, and if anything they will only worsen after their return too. Nero has already unlocked two power-ups, yet he is abandonned by the twins (for reasons he will have to come to terms with) And he is not even close to their power levels (Vergil only lost to Nero because he did not want to fight in the first place and was exhausted). Nero has been trying to establish himself... for his entire life, but every major demonic outbreak had Required a Dante call, Nero had not been able to handle it on his own. And after twins return this issue will only persist, because he means so much to the twins, he now basically has a very agressive safety net, which all the spardas will have to work together to solve.

Also I could have just said family. Nero will be worrying over twins the entire time of their absence, no doubt about it. Hopefully, in the meantime of awaiting their return, he will look into whatever he can find of their history, and he will get at least a rough picture of what the hell the brothers have been through and why they had to go together.

Other weakpoint of Nero's is, of course, Kyrie. I actually have no idea how he leaves their home, knowing his blood attracts demons, which are already plenty in Fortuna, and with canon suggesting no special abilities to defend herself with. If something happens to her it will be devastating for him, but Nero has grew up with good support system around him, he has another adopted sibling in Nico, and now even his blood relatives are close. It will be hard, but I believe he could pull through with all of their help. (but I want nothing bad to happen to Kyrie)

Same applies for Kyrie - she will be tortured by the loss of nero if it came to that, but hopefully she will be able to work through that loss.

I would say literally all of the littlebugs..... when I joined the server almost a year ago, I had misconceptions about creativity and inspiration and what it meant to write a story.... and being around all the authors I love and hold dear has been wonderful for fixing all the previous problems I had. I feel like I was nearly close to quitting my short-lived bout back into fic writing after putting up hearth, but that very much changed after being around other creatives that I looked up to!!

"For the last time, angel, I don't dance!" Crowley growled as he darted about the book shop, ducking and weaving between the shelves, trying to avoid Aziraphale's pleading gaze to the best of his ability.

"Please Crowley, just for tonight! I promise I'll do anything you ask of me to make up for it!" Aziraphale insisted as he chased after the demon, determined for the two of them to go dancing together. Crowley suddenly stopped in the middle of the book shop, and spun around to face the rapidly approaching angel.

"Why are you so insistent about this?!" He asked in reply, wanting to know why Aziraphale wouldn't take no for an answer.

"Because Nina and Maggie asked me to go with them to their couples dance lesson, and I can't just go by myself!" Aziraphale explained as he came to a stop just a few feet away from his demon. "And besides," he added, "they think it would be good for us."

"Yeah, well, if they want us to stop meddling in their relationship, they really need to stop meddling in ours." Crowley grumbled. "And besides, why would we go to couples dance lessons anyway?" He prattled on, vaguely waving his arms in the air to emphasize his point.

"Well, we are a couple." Aziraphale countered softly.

"That doesn't mean we have to take dance lessons together!" Crowley argued, still not having it. "Don't you have anyone else you could go with? Like Muriel, for example!" He added, doing everything he could to get out of going to dance lessons.

"Muriel was called back to Heaven, remember? They won't be back for at least a few weeks." Aziraphale gently reminded him.

"Well there has to be someone else that you can take with you!" Crowley growled in reply.

"But there isn't! I don't have anyone else, Crowley. I don't want anyone else. Please, you're my last hope, darling." Aziraphale pleaded desperately. He felt a spark of confidence about his chances as he noticed the demon crack slightly at the word 'darling', though when Crowley didn't respond further than that, Aziraphale pressed onwards, gently taking Crowley's hands in his own. "Look, I know that this thing between us - this relationship - is still new, and fragile, and that we're both getting used to it all, but I really do think this could be good for us. We've spent so much time trying to set boundaries, and define what we are, that we haven't allowed ourselves to take a break and just have fun together." He explained softly, hoping that this would get through to Crowley. "I think we deserve to have just a little bit of fun, don't you?" He added with a smile, giving Crowley's hands a gentle squeeze. Crowley sighed softly as he looked down at their interlaced fingers.

"Fine, angel, I'll go dancing with you!" He grumbled softly, unable to say no after all of that. "But, I am not going to be happy about it!" He added, not wanting his angel to think he was starting to go soft.

"Of course not, dear." Aziraphale replied placatingly, letting out a small huff of amusement. "Now, go and get ready. We leave in an hour." He instructed cheerfully, letting go of Crowley's hands so that the demon could go and change into more appropriate attire for the evening. Crowley just grumbled softly beneath his breath, before turning on his heel and sauntering off to do as Aziraphale commanded. Once the demon was out of sight, Aziraphale headed off to pick out his own outfit for the evening.

Aziraphale hummed softly as he closed up the shop for the night, doing what he could to keep himself busy as he waited for Crowley to finish getting ready for the evening. As he heard the click of high heels against metal, he quickly turned around, his breath catching in his throat as he watched Crowley walking down the stairs, a soft blush dusting his cheeks as he took in the sight of her. She was wearing a sparkling black, sleeveless dress, with matching black silk gloves that went up to her elbows, along with a pair of black stilettos. She had grown out her hair a few inches past her shoulders, and curled it too. And of course the look wouldn't be complete without her usual sunglasses, and some black lipstick.

"So, how do I look?" She drawled as she came to a stop just a few feet away from him, giving Aziraphale a full spin to show off the goods, waiting for his verdict on her appearance.

"Oh Crowley, you look absolutely stunning, my dear." He replied in a love-struck voice, looking positively smitten. Crowley blushed softly at that.

"Well, you don't look too shabby either, angel." She replied softly as she looked him up and down, taking in his cream colored suit with an appreciative glance.

"Thank you, my dear." Aziraphale replied in an equally soft voice, smiling brightly. "Now, let's be off then, shall we?" He added chipperly, holding out his arm for Crowley like a proper gentlemen would. Crowley rolled her eyes at the gesture, but couldn't help smiling softly as she looped her arm through his.

Maggie waved eagerly at them as they entered the dance studio, while Nina gave them an odd look from where she was standing next to her partner as they approached. Aziraphale happily waved back, a bright smile on his face as he continued to drag a his grumpy demon along with him.

"I didn't realize you were a cross dresser." Nina said in a curious tone once they were a few feet away, taking in Crowley's outfit.

"Nina!" Maggie chided her softly, giving her partner a disapproving look.

Crowley just smiled sharply as she said, "There's a lot you probably haven't realized about me."

"Right!" Aziraphale interrupted with a clap of his hands before Nina could provoke the demon further, "Why don't we go find our dance instructor?"

"That's a great idea, Mr. Fell!" Maggie agreed excitedly, before taking Nina's hand and dragging her off to find the dance room they had reserved, as Aziraphale did the same with his own partner, following after them at a more casual pace.

"Alright guys, today we're going to start off simple by learning the Viennese Waltz! Everyone get into position!" The dance instructor exclaimed cheerfully as she waited for the two couples to partner up, before starting the music. Aziraphale and Crowley took to the dance naturally, both having learned it when it was first invented way back in the 13th century, meaning that they were mostly left alone as the instructor focused on Nina and Maggie, both of whom had never done anything like this in their entire lives, except for the ball that Aziraphale had thrown so that they would fall in love, though that hardly counted.

"This is nice, isn't it?" Aziraphale asked softly so that only Crowley could hear as they danced around the studio, giving the younger couple plenty of room to stumble around.

"It's not so bad, I suppose." She drawled in reply, actually having fun, though she would never admit that to Aziraphale. She had a feeling he knew anyway.

"Well, thank you for coming. It would have been terribly boring without you." He replied with a grateful smile, giving Crowley a gentle squeeze where his hand met her shoulder.

"Yeah, well, it was better then sitting around the shop all night waiting for you to come back." She sniffed nonchalantly, though Aziraphale could tell that she was glad she came.

"I love you, my dear." He whispered quietly, halting their dance for just a split second to kiss the demons cheek, before picking up the steps again. Crowley blushed brightly, looking off to the side in embarrassment.

"I love you too, angel." She mumbled in reply, though she couldn't avoid the giddy smile that crept its way onto her face.

I've got a question (as per your post saying questions are welcome.) I hope you'll forgive me if I word things wrong and feel free to let me know so I can avoid doing it again.

So, I never really knew what Zionism was and I feel like I still barely know. Before I looked into it, all I had ever heard was people saying it with venom. From the way they spoke, I just assumed it meant something very aggressive and violent. To my knowledge SOME are violent but it doesn't seem accurate to say that Zionism is inherently violent or evil. I'm sure there's more I should know; It feels like I only barely, barely know the basics. In addition to any insights you might have in general, I guess I'd like to know: Is the Two-State solution technically Zionist, since Israel would continue to be a self-governing state? Am I Zionist or Zionist-ish if I believe in Jewish Indigeneity (while also believing in the indigeneity of the Palestinian people because more than one population can be indigenous to the same place.)

Also, and I apologize if it's inappropriate to make comparisons like this, it feels like the term "Zionist" is sort of used how "Communist" was used in Red Scare USA? It feels like it doesn't even mean anything other than "enemy" and is used to elicit a strong emotional reaction.

I want to learn more so that I don't perpetuate any stereotypes or continue in my ignorance. I'd also love any recommendations on books about Jewish History or the Levant! edenfenixblogs inspired me to read more about Jewish history with the recommendation of Night by Elie Wiesel, and I'd like to continue learning history beyond the Holocaust, too.

So first, your comparison of “Zionist” to “Communist re 1950s” is so spot-on I can’t believe I haven’t heard it before now. I just want to get that out front so I don’t forget later (ADHD goes whee).

So “Zionism” is sort of like “queer” in that it means a lot of different things to different people, but has core things that will always be true. Those things are thus:

1) the Jewish people are indigenous to the Levant;

2) many (though not all) Jews were forced to leave historic Israel and Judea due to Greek and Roman conquest and colonization, and this has gone poorly enough for us over the last two millennia that it’s clear we will not be safe until we have self-determination in our own country;

3) by virtue of being our ancestral and indigenous homeland, that country should be in the Levant.

That’s it, that’s Zionism.

I do want to point out there are Zionists who twist the word into pretzels in order to justify being horrible to others, particularly Palestinians. While I won’t no-true-Scotsman these people into not being Zionists, I will say they’re Zionists the same way the Taliban are technically Muslim. They’ve latched onto an otherwise-neutral label in order to have a bludgeon. That is not what Zionism should be, and for the majority of Zionists, it’s not.

According to the amount of docs I created in the past few months, there are about 14.

Those are the ones I've actually started working on, that I do plan on posting one day, that I'm actively nurturing. (and this is just for Young Royals, there's like 5 for percy jackson but I'm never going to finish those). If we count just random ideas I get during the day that I do want to work out ... 25, maybe?

One that I'm kind of really excited for is Wille and Simon meet each other at the Oscars fic (or maybe another award show, I'm not set on the Oscars but that doesn't really matter). Simon works there, Wille is a guest. They flirt. They have fun sexy times and start dating💜

10. Which fic has been the easiest to write?

Either Took a While (but we made it), cause so much of that was written already in the show, like I was just really talking about my favorite moments there, or Got My Heart On Your Hand, which was really just a dumb silly idea but it got me through that week inbetween the first five episodes and episode six, and somehow that made it very easy to write.

Any comment by Lia (@bigalockwood ) genuinely makes me tear up, because she leaves the absolute best (and longest) comments, so those always bring a smile to my face (if i'm not in a literal puddle on the floor)

- Jeff never expected to be in a parental/big brother roll again. He's supposed to be the most notorious and feared killer there is. Not fucking playing single dad over here! So imagine his surprise when the slenderman brought in a child no more than 4 years old and apparently the kid has no fear factor they just ran up to the biggest baddest person there was and befriended him. Ever since then Jeff became wrapped around their little finger.

-very over protective of them. He won't let anyone train them except for him and him alone. And if he has to let someone else take the reins for a bit he's watching them closely like a hawk. Trains them in relatively age appropriate ways as they grow up. They play pretend fucked up scenarios like how missions work or what to do when things go wrong how to interact with the other creeps. Think of it like 'it's me your scumbag dad' videos. He will teach them how to curse and questionable life lessons as they grow up.

-Toby is way too much of a nervous wreck to take care of himself let alone anyone else. And ever since Lyra died he's been too afraid to get attached to someone ever again despite the void in his heart. So imagine to everyone's surprise when the slenderman brought home a child no more than 9 years old. Clearly traumatized and heart broken and shooken up about whatever happened that brought them there. Toby protested about putting the kid with him as slenderman wouldn't take no for an answer. He's holding the kid out like how Mike wazozski holds out boo for the first time.

-at first he tried to distance himself from the child. Going as far as hitting and being mean to the child. He left them in the woods once. However that child was a persistent little creature and always found their way back to Toby. They followed him around everywhere like a lost puppy until he started to warm up to them after accepting that they'll forever always be there. He teaches them a lot of nature stuff. How to track. How to survive in the woods and to fight off predators. The raccoons and possums are your friends. Occasionally if they have free time they will have a girl's night where they do spa treatments, each other's hair, makeup and they eat relatively healthy snacks as they watch movies and gossip.

-EJ was quite confused when the slenderman dropped off a child to him with no word. Is it food? A sacrifice? A new prey?. He was curious and the child was non verbal so it's not like they could answer either besides head nods and writing and facial expressions and body language. Really he ended up not caring and didn't really bother the child as long as the child did not bother him.

-it all changed when the child showed intrigued in anatomy. After he caught them reading his old college textbooks. They communicate by sounds at this point. Showed them on a dead person where the organs were and why they were important. Later on the child became more of the strong silent type and was basically EJs assistant. They have a mentor/apprentice relationship. The kid knows first aid as well and makes a fine medic

-Nina was hyperactively jumping up and down for joy when the slenderman brought a 10 year old girl home who had the same aesthetic as her. They clicked instantly and immediately bounced off of each other's crack head energy.

-shes Nina's partner in crime and has never separated from her and Nina won't trade that for the world.
