Since the beginning of time, most gynecologists have been men. Men have been writing women's stories for centuries. This work is not a quick-fix. It is journey that won't happen overnight at first until suddenly, one day, there is a quantum leap, then another one. It calls for us to be more available to SIMPLE activities like "belly breathing" or "breast stroking with emotion" to begin the masterful process of raising our energy up and beyond the root and sacral, allowing it infuse into our heart. Let’s talk about a trend in queer Jason Grace headcanons

I have been seeing headcanons about Jason Grace actually being queer since House of Hades came out (Jason was not popular before that. trust me). While there's nothing inherently wrong with queer headcanons, it is frustrating that the most common ones I see are already included in canon in the less-acknowledged character arcs of Reyna and Piper. It feels wrong that Jason fans are so willing to read deeply into the story for evidence that that this white boy could be affected by compulsory heterosexuality and is actually queer, while Reyna and Piper are not appreciated nearly as much despite comp-het being a part of their canon stories.

I even recently saw someone say that Jason's character arc of learning who he really is outside of the norms of Roman society is suggestive of a queer coming out journey. If only there was a character in this series who canonically struggled with heteronormative expectations of Roman praetorship, who then embraced their canon marginalized sexual identity after stepping away from Roman society....does this ring a bell to anyone else...?

In addition to Reyna's canon arc getting projected onto Jason by fans, Piper's queer journey also gets applied to Jason while Piper herself is largely brushed aside by fans. Like Jason, Piper's memories of her hetero relationship with Jason were implanted in her head by the goddess of marriage, and she later realized that her feelings of love for Jason weren't genuine. She then goes on to break up with him and explore her queerness, later dating a girl. This is a very compelling allegory for the real compulsory heterosexuality that wlw experience, and as a lesbian I found myself relating to it a lot. It makes me sad that Piper's queer journey so underappreciated by fans, while every other day I see posts imagining Jason with a very similar journey.

Why Jason? Why do I see so many people put so much thought into how Jason could be read as queer, while largely not touching the female characters with canon stories of queer self discovery? It's hard not to wonder if this is linked to the bias of prioritizing white men over women and especially women of color. This isn’t anyone’s individual fault: if it were just one Jason fan doing this, I would chalk it up to just a preference for his character over Reyna or Piper’s. However, the presence of a trend, the fact that this happens repeatedly, suggests a bias in favor of centering white male characters to the detriment of brown female characters. If you feel targeted by this post, sit with that discomfort. Examine and question your preferences. None of us are free from bias, and leaving it unexamined doesn’t make it go away.

I’m not against queer readings of Jason’s character, I just wanted to point out that people’s headcanons tend to recreate the canon queer arcs of Piper and/or Reyna to project onto him. I’m pointing this out because I don't think people even know they're doing it. Part of me wonders why Reyna and Piper don't get the same kind of attention and celebration for the traits that people want to apply to Jason. Except I think I already know the answer.

The lore of TVDU is truly lacking. There's no real in-depth explanation on witch families. If Klaus doesn't have the magic gene, how would he be able to pass that on to Hope? The whole "first born" thing doesn't make any sense. In no other instance in TVD does birth order establish power. For werewolf families, anyone born into one inherits the gene. This is not true for witches. It would make more sense for Kol or Freya's child to carry magic. Even then, it isn't guaranteed they'll have any power. Why do some witch bloodlines just stop having magic? We aren't given any explanation. They lazily throw in a storyline about Katherine being a Traveller witch but her bloodline has no power (Elena is magicless and Katherine having magic makes no sense). Instead of creating real rules for witchcraft and witch bloodlines, they put things together with no thought. It's aggravating how inconsistent it is and that they forced Petrovas into witchcraft, because they didn't want to focus on the history of the only active witch family in town. Bonnie lost her magic and suddenly white witches were everywhere.

Again, I’m discouraged though I have no problem with discussing Klayley /Hayley or canon Hope. Due to the responses fans will give when it comes to speaking on Bonnie and her Bloodline. Bonnie is the only character to get repetitive moral policing from the writers to the fans. Yet do not hold the women (who happen to be white) in the same regard. Freya, Dahlia and the retconning about Esther exists to uplift Hope’s witch heritage. Then the series went a step further to give Hayley a witch ancestor who to me conceptual wise seems like Silas + Qetsiyah & Cade all in one. It doesn’t seem like that gene should’ve been that strong anyway.

TVD doesn’t value Bonnie the way the others are treated. Hayley had sex immediately upon her introduction. Hayley goes through relationships. Her friends care about her. If Hayley wants to snap off and fight she gets that right. Bonnie isn’t allowed to do half of those things. We’re told Hayley(and her bloodline) are someone/people to be cared about. Hayley is a werewolf Queen! The series does not do the same for Bonnie. She isn’t praised for being a Bennett witch, she doesn’t have equal desirability and isn’t prioritized. It isn’t until season 8 we get Bonnie saying she wants the life Caroline lived (home, kids, family and a partner..)

Hayley’s plots were centered around her motherhood and being a werewolf. None of that translated to Hope. Klaus wasn’t given any werewolf plots. So why center Hope’s life on being a witch? Hayley admits she didn’t understand Hope’s power. Hope’s tribrid era to explore her vampire side was short lived. Bonnie and Hayley have both faced abandonment and family struggles but Bonnie’s isn’t talked about enough like Hayley’s. If Hope did have a Bonnie as a mother there plenty to witch-connections to make from there through Bonnie’s history. It’s a big fuck you to Bonnie to me to include child witches and never allow those connections to blossom.

Fans would’ve hated it if Klonnie were a couple or a fling in canon. Many pretend that Bonnie’s blackness isn’t the issue when it comes to Bonnie possibilities when it often is. It is okay if Bonnie is friends with or helps terrible people in canon. Lines are suddenly drawn when you mention things in a romantic sense or more. The rules NEVER apply to their faves. Bonnie is the pentacle of humanity and no should be paired with her yet their faves can do whatever and still be a “good girl” while dating a man who is capable of mass murders.

One thing that I think I've noticed as this story has progressed, and in general, is that we always expect and or look for reason in men's bad behavior. There is always a reason for them to do bad things, outside of them actively choosing to be a bad person. Someone must have failed them, she must have failed them, she must have failed him, etc.

Elliot tried to kill Hope. He tried to drag her with him into the abyss, and yet he was not viewed as an attempted murderer, but instead as a friend who had gone astray. Someone who needed more support or more attention. At his funeral, people wept over the fact that he couldn't be saved! It is always tragic when someone makes a fatal decision that harms themselves and others around them, but I notice that, especially in the black community, black women's victimization takes a backseat to the pain of black men.

Now we see something similar with Bishop. While it's interesting to ponder the complexities of why he is the way he is, Mercy is being preyed upon! She sets boundaries, and he crosses them, always with an undertone of violence. There is talk about whether he cares or if he can change, and it falls into that same line of thinking. "If I love him more, then he'll do right." "I can fix him" "He just needs..."

Anyway, let me know if I'm way off the mark, but it seems like women tend to take on far too much responsibility for the feelings and actions of men, to the point of forgoing their best interests.

Yes I believe that, in the case of Elliot and Darren, there was absolutely a reason for them to do bad things and some have chosen to dismiss those reasons. Elliot was actively mentally ill, but rather than address mental illness, we chose to throw him away. We literally witnessed this young man's decline and if we can't separate his actions on the pier from his diminished mental state, what does that say about us and how we perceive mental illness?

In fact, when did Hope take a backseat? Once Elliot was collectively thrown away, all eyes centered on Hope's healing and rightfully so! But one thing I'm not gonna do (I feel it would be irresponsible as a Black woman writer) is stifle Hope's healing to uplift the man who hurt her. Hope was wrapped in love by everyone, including her husband (a Black man).

Why didn't we throw Indya away for the nasty shit she did like taking a baseball bat to Darren's nose? Or throw Jerri away for the literal attempted murder of Juan? If I do nothing else, I want us to think about things like this and force questions that we wouldn't ask ourselves otherwise.

I've opened up a space in this current arc to look at a very clearly damaged individual (Bishop) through multiple lenses. I don't think acknowledging Bishop's humanity (pixelness) necessarily means "I can fix him". Like, at all. I think our readers are smarter than that and only recognize nuance. why can't there be room for trans women in feminism? while i agree that being afab is a distinct experience under patriarchy, trans women are our sisters! they have every right to exist publicly as women (the same as butch or disabled or otherwise marginalized afab women) and are as much apart of the fight for liberation from cis male domination as us afab women.

Do you mean why can't the experiences and needs that are unique to transwomen in whatever way be prioritized within feminism? I mean the question can just be reversed, why should they?

I think it's verbiage like this that demonstrates a lack of understanding what feminism is. It's not a club, or an identity. It's not a belief system, not really. It's political activism and it's a framework to critically view our society through, and the only way those two things exist effectively is to be centered on an idea, or tenets if you prefer, some sort of central understanding. Feminism is meant to be the platform women can acknowledge and dissent their oppression on the axis of being female. It's all so stuffy when it's explained like that, but for clarity's sake that's the scope. Anything that falls outside of that scope is just, frankly, irrelevant. But something being irrelevant to feminism doesn't mean it's irrelevant all the time? It's baffling to me to think that way. Why can't feminism be about female oppression and also women care about the lives of other people? Are we feminist robots or are we fully realized people with complex internal and external lives?

Anon, if trans women are our sisters, do you feel they are your sisters, or do you feel like you have to be a sister to them? Sisterhood is two ways. How do trans women prioritize your needs? Do trans women demand sisterhood, or do they act sisterly? Men who are transitioning, whatever that entails, are diverse just like women and feminists, so I'm sure we can find feminist allies among them, but my experience online shows the overwhelming "party line" is that trans women are owed sisterhood, and owe nothing in return. Do they act like sisters? That's something for you to think on for yourself anon, your experiences might be different how would I know.

Anyway long ass ramble abt the tiny dead Hidden Agenda fandom below the cut

This is mainly something I noticed looking through the very limited amount of Hidden Agenda fics on ao3, but it's VERY obvious on there. The vast majority of fics on there are centered on Adam and Finn, which I can understand more since they have an interesting backstory and are well written characters, sure. But then you look at the others and the other characters that are centered are... Riggs and Calvary?

In the actual game ofc Becky and Felicity are the main characters. Both of them not only are pretty objectively interesting characters on their own, and even more so together. On top of this they have the most shipping potential of any two characters in that game, it's literally basically canon, it's not even subtext atp it's literally just text. NO other two characters have that amount of chemistry in the game, and yet there is a noticeable lack of gravey fics in that tag. And I'll stress again bc I know how defensive people got last time I made this kind of observation, I'm not pointing fingers or calling anyone misogynistic/racist/homophobic BUT. but. When the two mcs are women, one of which is poc, and they're implied to be lesbians, and they get sidelined by the fandom despite being the focuses of the game... it's kinda hard not to assume there's some kind of bias there.

And on another point, it's similar when it comes to supporting characters too. In a way I'm disappointed but absolutely not surprised that Adam/Finn is prioritized in fan works over Becky/Felicity, but when characters like Riggs and Calvary are also given more attention than them it becomes way more suspicious to me. Riggs is a fine character, I like him enough and I can see why others might like him more, but wbk he doesn't really have all that much relevance. Calvary is even more confusing bc he basically JUST exists to be a creepy misogynistic asshole and as unlikeable as possible. Thankfully I haven't seen him getting a lot of attention but the fact that I've seen him getting any that isn't entirely negative is... hm...

Now there ARE in fact male characters that can be both relevant and likeable: Tom and Karl. (I talk shit abt Karl bc it's a joke I started with friends, I'm gonna drop that for this post obv bc we're being fr here) these two are pretty obviously more relevant than Riggs or Calvary, they're literally Becky's partners (Tom can even replace Riggs' entire role lmao, and if he's replaced himself it's by Karl) and I'd say they're also both likeable characters on their own too. And yet I'm pretty sure I found maybe one??? fic with them in it? Probably should have mentioned this earlier but yeah, they're both poc.

So like... I feel like it all comes down to what Becky/Felicity/Tom/Karl have in common and then what Adam/Finn/Riggs/Calvary have in common. It strikes me as questionable. But like maybe I'm just an annoying snowflake though idk🤷‍♀️ /s

This turned into more of a ramble than anything and I'm aware i'm also yelling into a void bc I'm posting entirely for a dead fandom that barely existed to begin with, but tbh this stuff applies to most if not all larger fandoms as well, i'm just looking at it from what I've seen in the remnants of the HA fandom. Again I am not attacking anyone here, I am making observations. If you're like mad or something I'm just gonna assume you didn't even read the whole post. Yes ur allowed to like characters, but I am also allowed to address what I've noticed about what characters seem to be more liked than others.

So like, this is why I call myself a Marxist feminists rather than a Radical Feminist because I primarily think that ending the relationship between heterosexuality/submission to male authority and women’s financial security will eventually end the intense prioritization of men by women. Without economic survival being assured without ties to the patriarchal family or heterosexual social structures, women will naturally just care about what men think a lot less.

There are other women who believe the opposite, that one must separate from men. I think this is truthfully impractical and cruel. It might make sense for a young woman without children and a college education, but it makes less sense for less financially well positioned women and once men realize many women who are financially well positioned are breaking away, they will use the women and children they control against independent women (or to at least, stay compliant with the scapegoating). Most women, statistically, have children that they need to care for. Most women, who work for wages, have jobs reliant on their willingness to work harder for less and to take male abuse. Most women do not live in a world where realistically they can reskill and leave their husbands without suffering dire economic and social consequences that will put them at risk for more predation. They literally either cannot afford it or live in cultures were this isn’t permissible. Not only that, but it destroys solidarity between younger and older women which we need to win. Men are 50% of the population. We need every woman on board. This cycle has already happened many times, all over the world, throughout history.

Now you may say? Why don’t women all pick up trades? I think going into the trades is a good option for a lot of women and I encourage it, but when I think about economic security, my mind drifts to more vulnerable periods of a woman’s lifespan like her later years and when she is a mother with young children. It’s easier to be economically well when you aren’t strapped by dependents or in bad health but men use our vulnerabilities against us to accept their dominion.

Women not only deserve inalienable economic security for the carework they preform through raising and educating children and caring for the old and sick but protecting women at their most vulnerable protects us all. If we want to live in a healthy post patriarchal world some, or most, women will still want to have kids. We want those women to need support via labor and $$$ from other women rather then men during that time. When women are old and need help, they need support and $$$ from female driven sources. We will all get old or sick someday, we all were children once, some of us may want to become mothers. All of these life stages are RIPE with male predation and exploitation and women forced “under” male protection , for whatever reason, are often turned against feminists but this is a false, male centered choice. Feminists are natural allies to mothers not men.

Knowing we don’t need to rely on men when we’re weak makes us strong and bold. Kids who grow up in households lead by women, with good financial health and strong female lead social bonds not only thrive but become kids comfortable with challenging male power. Adult women free from the burden of raising children without payment do not need to tie their social and political activities to a domineering and conservative husband. They also don’t need to be as desperate to work in exploitive work environments and can ally with childless women in organizing activities with less financial stress.

Wages for Childcare and full autonomy for female dominated industries IS the issue of our time. I don’t want every single woman to stay in a traditional field, obviously, I’m not in one, but I do want every single woman to know that no matter what there are millions and millions of women who earn good money to throw at lawsuits, financial assistance, who can take time off to protest, who can provide childcare etc etc…for women who do feel called to brave the world of male/het relations.

We NEED a strong base of financial autonomy and self respect. We NEED to make sure men can’t split us in camps of spinsters vs. goodwives. We NEED to make sure every woman knows we have her back, as long as she pays us back with loyalty to women first. It is so critical to the survival of this movement to create strong structures that support separatism rather then undermine it.
