Never had a unhostile conversation in over a decade? Obviously they're besties.

Because they are often in the same place at plot significant moments (and because Horikoshi often doesn't give his story any breathing room for downtime), people get the impression that Izuku and Bakugou interact often. But it's directly in the text that for the majority of their lives (and at least a quarter of the manga), they never talked to each other outside of necessity.

The "childhood friend" thing and All for One's projection of Kudoichi onto the both of them has poisoned a lot of the fandom's perception of their relationship. It's in the School Briefs that Izuku knew they weren't actually childhood friends but that he had no other word for it. Yes, Izuku still calls him by a childhood nickname that indicates closeness. Because he wasn't able to make any other connections after his quirkless diagnosis and he was holding onto any human connection he had. The fact that he calls him Kacchan only further emphasizes that any positive relationship they had ended at an age where calling him cutesy names was socially appropriate - because the other childhood friends - Bakugou's middle school lackeys - call him Katsuki.

All for One assumed Izuku and Bakugou are closest because the only person he ever genuinely cared for was the person he developed in the womb with. And because he sees them as Yoichi and Kudou in his head despite the lack of similarities in their dynamic

i just? izuku is now quirkless again and injured, but still trying his best as usual.

i am reminded of each time katsuki pushed him down in their past where izuku was in the almost same state of being(minus the life threatening circumstances).

i cant find the panel but i am thinking of the one where kid!izuku was standing up for a kid being beat up by katsuki.

sure reminds me of this one in ch 419:

its just... when he's in this state(quirkless n injuried) katsuki is never far away so... im just delusional because that's what keeps us alive sometimes.

but i wish that for each and every time katsuki pushed him down in this state, he will be the one to extend his hand and step in again(because phew chps 403 & 404 were amazing) to do what he does best. show izuku what it means to be his hero.

It was his words, the way they lingered in the air—making it even harder to breathe, that brought you to finally, finally tilt your head up and look at him.

But it was his face, and every bit of raw emotion written all over it, that destroyed and led your walls crumbling down.

“Say something, Y/N. Please.”

You look at the wall clock again, unable to handle his gaze.

Bakugou takes a cautious step closer. Your breath hitches despite all efforts in steeling yourself, only watching him as he reluctantly reaches for your hand, only to pull back regrettably in seconds.

How did everything come to this?

“Sorry. I just—” He starts, stumbling with his words. You can’t believe what you’ve reduced him to. “—I just need you to tell me what I can do to help.”

“This is why I didn’t want to tell you,” you mumble to yourself.

At that, Bakugou’s eyebrows furrow even more. You sigh, darting your eyes away from him, exhausted.

Of this conversation.

Of hiding from him.

Of everything.

“I already told you, Kats,” you shake your head, “it’s not your job to fix me.”

“So, what?” he spits back, the all-too-familiar anger finally bleeding into his tone. “Are you saying I should just fucking leave you to go through all this alone until this swallows you up completely?”

“Yes,” you exclaim exasperatedly. And on that note, one emotion of his becomes finally clear enough for you to identify.

Hurt.

“That’s exactly what I’m saying.”

Some twisted part of you—the part that wants Bakugou to keep on fighting—wishes he’d bark out another response.

Another rebuttal.

Another retort.

Anything to prove you wrong.

But it doesn’t come.

When you look up again from your clenched fists, Bakugou’s head is bowed in what looks so much like defeat.

And despite him being the most strong-willed person you know, his shoulders are sagging in what you can only assume is frustration.

Hell, you’d be equally frustrated as well, but you weren’t at the receiving end, and your end was a whole different story—one you just can’t brush aside despite your tendency to suppress all personal, unwanted feelings.

When he finally lifts his head to face you, his eyes are bloodshot.

“I love you, Y/N,” he starts, voice uncharacteristically quiet. “And I’ve been the damn luckiest person alive to be in love with you.”

He reaches out and takes both of your hands in his.

You don’t break away from his grasp.

“So you have to give me a chance to take this in and plan how to get through this with you.”

“But that’s the thing, Katsuki,” you smile, willing the tears to stay where they are. “I love you, and I just can’t sit back and watch myself drag you down with me.”

You clench your eyes closed, finally letting the tears fall down.

“You deserve better than that.”

At that, Bakugou opens his mouth to protest, but before he can say something in retaliation, you withdraw your hands from the warmth of his calloused yet oh-so-familiar ones, and dash for the door.

You hear his broken voice call out your name, but you don’t dare look back.

I’m doing this for him, you chant in your head as you run, turning another block, and then another, getting further away from your shared apartment.

And the person you would’ve wanted to keep on calling ‘home’.

Why would it require you to eat dirt for you to really get it?

He's supposed to a natural genius. Not only that, All Might is his inspiration: he's probably seen nearly every All Might fight ever recorded. All Might is the atlas holding their hero society together. He has been the number one hero longer than Bakugou has been alive. Bakugou even saw All Might fight in person during the USJ fight.

What insane level of delusion was he operating under that after knowing all of this - that he thought he could win alone in a head on fight against All Might.
