Thoughts on The Rise of Red
Okay, these are just my thoughts that I wrote down in my note app as I watched the movie.
SPOILERS if you haven't watched "Descendants: The Rise of Red" yet:
Tumblr media
Uma crying talking about Carlos is definitely China crying for real. It’s definitely a plot inconsistency because as far as we know Uma and Carlos didn’t have any type of relationship outside of Mal but for China and the audience, I thought it was a touching nod to Cam.
Maybe it’s just me but I feel like over the past three movies we had gotten better with the wig situations and this movie felt like a bit of a step back for some of these wigs
The special effects in Red’s first song were pretty neat for a DCOM-adjacent movie
Maddox is kinda cute…This man is 44!?!?! 😍
Paolo Montalbano 😍 My first crush! Honestly he and Brandy and China are the only reason why I’m watching this.
Still not a total fan of Cinderella’s dress. It’s giving royal moo-moo
Brandy and Paolo are still cute together. Like not even in a romantic way but they are definitely co-actors that have great chemistry on screen together. Like it feels like they slipped back into their characters effortless.
I’m sorry Brandy but those shoes are ugly
OMG! Chad is their son!!! They really was like, the Prince Charming had a White dad and a Black mom so of course he and Cindy can have a White son 🤣
Is it me or are there already more songs in this movie than the previous?
Maybe it’s because it’s the only second song but I definitely expected that they would have given Rita and Brandy more to work with
I know Dylan and Thomas probably have grown out of working with Disney but I at least wish they gave a throw away line about where Harry and Gil are. Like we know at least where Mal and the others are and that Carlos apparently died. Idk, the lack of Harry’s line in Uma’s song made me miss them.
You know, for all of the fuss they made about the magic wand, the fact that the Queen of Hearts can easily cut it in half is funny to me
Is this Aladdin and Jasmin they keep cutting back to? I didn’t keep up with the movie production before it came out so maybe them being in this movie shouldn’t be surprising
“Now make me proud, for once,” is such a hard comment to hear from a parent.
Not Chloe’s wig changing randomly 🤣
The actress playing young Fairy G definitely looks like a younger actress of the original one. Good casting.
I feel like a lot of these songs are just sing talking. Like not really singing but just them talking and like I know they did that sometimes in the previous movies but it just feels…odd
….did Chloe’s wig change…again…???
It did….
Did both of their wigs change???
Honestly, I’m underwhelmed by the costumes. I know the same designer wasn’t on this movie but eh
Ella is like… “Mom? Who you calling mom?!??!” 🤣
I forgot that since this was before Auradon they probably would take classes about magic
Bridget’s and Red’s outfits are so far my faves
Jaladdin 🤣
“If you wanna roll together we can be a vibe” 🤣
…..Chloe’s hair changed again….Is this just her face hair or something because it’s not the hair she had in the previous scene
Morganna’s son!?!? Didn’t expect that. Again, I have been so far removed from keeping up-to-date about the production of this movie
Oh I forgot Maleficent and Hades were together at some point. Guess I just thought that was an Isle boredom fling thing
I love how this movie totally negates anything that has happened in the original movies, at least in terms of how they happened. I honestly like to think of the OG movies as royal propaganda 🤣
Okay so I think there’s three wigs that Chloe has had, a regular, a slightly more volumized one, and then what my friend calls the “chia pet” one 😅
Chloe…NO! 😫
Honestly, this portrayal of Cinderella is kinda my fave. She’s been through a lot
Okay, should have known the VK songs would be a bop
Maybe it’s just me but every time I see Hades in this, I think he looks like Chris Colfer
I feel like this movie has so many special effects which isn’t bad, it’s just interesting because I feel like big special effects were saved until the last half/battle
WIG CHANGE AGAIN!
Paolo acting his butt off to the pay the bills
Oooo that was too far Red…
Wig change
Yeah, this movie definitely has a lot more songs…😬
Also…why is her wig longer when they’re gardening?
Are there…are there FOUR wigs?!?!?!?!
Me snorting at the captions reading -hero music playing-
Morganna’s son is missing a few brain cells. Love him.
There’s 7 minutes left….what are they gonna do in 7 minutes!
Not the Queen of Heart’s hair blowing in the wind! 😊
I know it’s not that serious in this movie, but I wonder what’s the reasoning for Red never going to Auradon now that things have changed
I’m glad the Queen of Hearts is nice and all but there should definitely be a fanfic about how Red is trying to distinguish her old reality with her new. And no, it won’t be from me. I wipe my hands clean of this series. I mean it! I’m so serious! I totally don’t have any plot bunnies in my head now! Nope! None. At. All!
Wait! Uma! Are you implying there’s going to be some - GASPS- ramifications to the time traveling!?!?!?
Final thoughts:
Maybe it’s because I’m OFFICIALLY not part of the target demographic anymore but I kind of felt underwhelmed. Like the last three movies had things I wasn’t a fan of but there were at least songs, aspects, characters, that I was a fan of. Honestly, the only person I LOVED in this one was Maddox. If you liked this movie, that’s totally fine and I hope my thoughts don’t stop you from enjoying it. I hope you have all the head cannons and fanfic ideas and amazing energizing conversations with others in the fan. If they come up with more stuff with this series (which they probably will) I might tune in but I think this, plus that Pt.2 outline of WLTF that I still owe folks will probably be my last active contribution to this particular fandom.
Anyway, my faves of Descendants: The Rise of Red:
Uma, even if she was just serving the purpose of narrator/handing the torch from one generation to the next
The nod to Cameron
Brandy and Paolo. I LOVE them on screen together.
I actually really liked Ella and hope to see the actress, Morgan Dudley in more things
Maddox was cute but I honestly always seem to have a thing for movie/TV mad hatters (points to OUAT and the SyFy mini series Alice)
Things I’m “eh” about:
The WIGS!!!! And the costumes but the WIGS!!! Like, if this series continues they need to fix stat!
The songs were kinda forgettable. Uliana’s song at her hideout was kinda a bop and Red’s intro song is good too but everything else was kinda “bleh”
I also feel like we didn’t really get to know Red that well or maybe I was just too distracted by Chloe’s wig.
The plot and pacing. I mean, the OG Descendants movies weren’t perfect but I feel like they typically hit certain plot beats where, as much as you can with these type of movies, it feels like the stakes are high. I guess Merlin’s office being the scene of the last “battle” and then going back to their time just felt a little anti-climatic for me.
But anywho, those are my thoughts. If you don’t agree, that’s fine, just be polite, okay?

AU masterpost to keep myself (and everyone else) from getting lost
So since apparently I can't stop creating New Things, I thought I could compile a comprehensive list of all tags and links to keep within reach for a change ✨I'll make sure to update it as I post more/already existing stuff grows content-wise
(Actual list under the cut obviously)
Once Upon A Time AUs
Thousand Problems Verse: The AU where Geppetto never sent his son through the wardrobe and Pinocchio was therefore hit by the curse like everyone else, destined to deal with his fairytale-esque issues alongside the more mundane ones you'd expect from a Storybrooke teenager.
Series on Ao3 - Tumblr main tag - Pinocchio's friends tag - Grace's clique tag - Parents tag
Ever After Storybrooke: OUAT/Ever After High fusion where the EAH protagonists are the children of the OUAT fairytale characters instead. Cedar Wood focused.
Tumblr tag
Stray Saplings: Originally an offshoot of the Pinocchio Swap, where every version of Pinocchio inexplicably switched universe overnight, now a self-indulgent take on August having to navigate being the (gasp) responsible adult for a few of his most traumatized counterparts
Tumblr tag
Appalachian Wine: Eliana is the Blue Fairy's biological daughter, but more importantly, she's August's older sister, and that doesn't bode well for anyone - especially her mother.
Tumblr main tag (with storyline fics) - Eliana tag
TMNT AUs
Shaking The Latch: 2003/Rise crossover where freshly mutated Lou Jitsu falls into the 2003 TMNT universe with his very young sons and gets to meet four more of them (older, brasher and way too enthusiastic about babysitting), plus himself 2.0 (and isn't that the scariest prospect).
Ao3 link - Tumblr tag
Sonic AUs
Salvector AU: Italian classic Inspector Montalbano, but with Sonic characters. Chief of Vigata City police Vector has to investigate the bizarre murder of Dr Starline, even after all suspects seem to fall on the scientist's uncommon ward.
Ao3 link - Tumblr tag
Belle & The Gang: Instead of taking Belle back to the Restoration HQ after rescuing her, the Chaotix take her in. Disaster ensues, but maybe there's space for some healing, too.
Series on Ao3
Miscellanea AUs
Frater Meus (Lies of P videogame): Post Real Boy ending. Carlo, recently resurrected, uses his influence to bring Romeo and P back to his side, one angry but uncertain about the best course of action, the other in a shape that suits the nature of his original creation - a scared child who got his heart ripped out. In a city still in shambles, with a son that aches for his younger brother, Geppetto really should sleep with an eye open.
Series on Ao3
Sunset/Spring (Pokemon Legends Arceus): Akari, the girl from the future, is not half-grown and capable of pulling her own weight, but a small child with no memory whose presence cannot be explained. Just what is Arceus' plan, exactly?
Series on Ao3
Signs (Disney Descendants): Lampwick finds his way back to Pinocchio before the Isle of the Lost is sealed, and they build their own family from then on, old grudges be damned.
Series on Ao3
Baby Cedar & Uncle Wick (Ever After High): Cedar Wood's childhood and growth, surrounded by a doting grandfather, a protective father and a "friend" of her father's who is not always the best of influences.
Series on Ao3 - Tumblr ficlet #1 - Tumblr ficlet #2

To start with, after a few jokes, she says that mentally we are stuck into the 5th century bc. In fact, as a philosopher back then, men (mankind) believe that everything that exists is for them. She then compares the word uomo (man) with donna (woman): in Italian "uomo" can be used both for mankind and male/masculine gender. So she asks "why man? (perché uomo?), we could say human kind or human animal" and states we're animals as well. We also have our DNA for the 70% similar to bananas and for the 98% to monkeys and primates in general (other jokes in between).
(I think this is the point of your question but anyway let me know) As humans, since we speak languages to communicate (while other animals/plants have other methods), we feel superior. And she basically says: "that's the same feeling that we Sicilian people have when someone from the North (Milan/Piedmont...) comes to Sicily, we speak to them in Sicilian and if that person doesn't understand we think that they're stupid: but it's not so, this person speaks another language. So we keep repeating the same sentence in Sicilian hoping the northerner will understand suddenly". She adds a sample sentence in Sicilian (don't ask me to write it cause I have no clue I speak another language as she said but it could be something like "cuccu cammini co' e arance 'n terra" BUT IDK what I did for sure I wrote it wrong) and says: "Even if we translated this sentence, it has no meaning anyway" and then asks Giletti (tv host, from Biella, Piedmont) to translate it (he asks for help to someone near him). She explains that sentence: "cu ccu" are two words that have different meaning just to confuse everyone better, and they mean "with whom" (con chi) and asks Giletti to repeat to help him learn Sicilian. The sentence translated sounds like "Con chi cammini con le arance che stanno per terra?" (with whom you walk with the oranges that are on the ground?). And indeed generally has no meaning but for Palermitani (people from Palermo), it means "with whom you walk with oranges that are fallen cause are rotten" -> who do you hang out with, rotten oranges = bad people? So she adds "It's pretty complex to get and one can understand it only if they have done a thesis on Camilleri (famous Sicillian author/writer who created Il Commissario Montalbano), but even with this background, we say that that person from the North is stupid".
She goes back speaking about the other ways of communication that plants and animals use and focuses on baboons that in order to cheer each other, they squeeze each other's... masculine genitals. "They acquire all the infos they need through that 'it's young' 'they will collaborate' (adds more fun stuff)". Then speaks about ants (formiche tagliafoglie= cutleaves?), and adds they're the smarter of all: "they pick up seeds as we used to do and have huge nests in which they cultivate mushrooms. They have been farming for 50 millions of years and didn't ruin anything we've been farming for 10.000 and have destroyed our planet. They were here when there were dinosaurs and survived the meteorite". So she says "Let's copy them, how does their society works? They're basically all female with a "mother queen" and a bunch of males. The "mother queen" decides the gender of the new borns and it's basically all females, except for a male or so every year for continuing the specie and nothing else." She adds a bunch of fun notes on this, how useful it is for them when it comes to exes and how happy male ants may be. "On the contrary, human animals prefer power ON other humans, men, women, childeren, nature... I like power too, but power OF laughing, making people laugh, dressing how I want, dancing on the street even if I embarass my daughter..." and ends by saying something like "if some stories/situations are still present maybe it's not time to ignore them and move on".

La Squadra's favourite tv shows; because these poor bastards at least they can afford an old tv
TW: Curses in italian, bl*sph*my and dr*gs ( Ghiaccio) and Tina Cipollari
Risotto: " Maurizio Costanzo Show "
Being surrounded by a variety of idiots ( yes even Prosciutto has his dumb moments ) Risotto likes to relax his brain watching an evergreen tv talk show by Maurizio Costanzo.
This old man, who Italy likes to make fun of because he literally has no neck ( and illuso jockingly calls poor Pesci like him) is basically one of the fathers of italian television and the cultured nature of the program itself, really helps Risotto relax and enjoy some quiet time.
Tumblr media
Prosciutto: " Il commissario Montalbano "
Even if normally Prosciutto would avoid cops, or like he calls them " sbirri maledetti " he really likes the vibe of this detective story.
He actually relates to the protagonist ( Salvo Montalbano ) on many levels: his reserved personality, his relationship with women ( both are womanizer ) and his absolute distaste for people who interrupts other people's lunchtime with phonecalls (the first time he saw it happen during an episode, he jumped from the couch screaming " SI C*ZZO SALVO, DIGLIELO A QUEL M*NCH*ONE BACIANNICCHIA!! ")
So whenever his favourite sicilian detective is on tv, he likes to watch it with a cold beer and eating some " spaghetti alle vongole"
Tumblr media
Illuso: " Uomini e Donne "
When it comes to drama, Illuso is the first one to enjoy it! And seeing young shallow people trying to find " true love " on a trash tv program really makes his day.
So with a face mask, coffee and his favourite pj he sits on his bed and evilly laugh at the rejects of the suitors, the tears of the girls and the banshee screeches of Tina Cipollari ( one of the show's regular hosts )
But what really makes Illuso an addict to this unbearable mess is the queen that reigns coldly over this chaos: Maria De Filippi. The woman, being also Maurizio's Costanzo's wife, is one of italian tv's overlords and is responsible for the majority of these type of entartainment ( Illuso has her autograph, is securely hidden inside his office)
Tumblr media
Melone: " Il Grande Fratello "
Cameras, secrets, public display of the human nature on it's lowest levels and tons of pretty girls showering/ telling everything about themselves for the audience to see...You can't tell me this isn't Melone's sh*t!
He especially likes the 24h live where you can truly see the competitors forgetting about the fact they are on tv and display sides of them not only to their journey's companions but also to the audience creepingly spying on them 24/7
Melone takes notes about the girls he finds interesting and plans on going to the " meet and greet" after the program (or when a competitor is eliminated from the game) to ask them out/see if they are good " Babyface material"...1/3 usually they are but the rest of the team prefers not to investigate on his random trips to Cinecittà
Tumblr media
Formaggio: " Incantesimo "
He is the last person someone can imagine enjoying a soap opera, and yet this roman man follows the romance and adventures of the doctors, nurses and lawyers of the " Clinica Life " in Rome like it's some sort of cult.
Formaggio is a passionate man, so he really gets invested in the stories and star-crossed lovers that makes his lonely afternoons more interesting; the rest of the Squadra often found him half drunk crying and yelling at the tv stuff like " NO LEI NON TE MERITA, PORCODDUE!" or " AMO' TE STA' A FA' 'NFINOCCHIA' DA QUEJA STR*NZA!!" and then passing out on the carpet..They have the decency to record the episode, so they don't have to deal with his whining about how he lost the occasion to see Agnese's " Occhi de fata "
Note from Benny: i couldn't find any Incantesimo's gif aaaaaa
Tumblr media
Pesci: " Carramba che sorpresa! "
Pesci is a soft boi, and the maternal aura radiating from Raffaella Carrà ( bless her soul, she truly was an icon ) is a perfect fit for him! He watches her show after rough missions, bullying sessions from his collegues ( illuso and formaggio ) or in general when he is feeling down.
Seeing the happiness, the emotions, the genuine feelings of the people Her Royal Majesty Raffaella helps reunite and be together after years of being apart ( his faves are long lost lovers ) really melts his heart. So he goes up to his room with a warm banket and hot cocoa, locks the door and let himself be a sentimental 22 year old guy without the peer pressure ruining his fun
Tumblr media
Ghiaccio: " Sarabanda "
Ghiaccio loves 4 things : his beloved red Mazda, go to a club and do c*ke while a str*pper with a particularly nice butt gives him a lap dance, beat up some random b*stards and Sarabanda.
Finds the announcer, Enrico Papi, extremely annoying but the whole vibe of the show is what he needs to let his fury filled brain concentrate on something else.
Having a big selection of cd and listening to various artists during his rides he easily guess the songs but finds it challenging (in a good way ) when he discovers a new song or artist during an episode; but if a competitor is slow at answering or straight up ignorant on the whole deal ( and Lord have mercy if they say things with the wrong pronunciation ) he starts yelling like he always does and starts cursing the whole Heaven population.
One time Risotto found him punching the table while yelling " LA BAMBA D*OCAN!!! COME C*ZZO FAI A NON INDOVINARE LA BAMBA MAD*NA P*TAN!!! TO SOREA VACA, COI SOLDI CHE VINCEVI QUI SI FA LA PORCOD*O DI SPESA 2 M*RDA DI SETTIMANEH!!"
Tumblr media
@dark-side-of-passion thank you for keeping me company while i wrote this, love you bestie <3

A new day (year), a new hyperfixation. But am I losing my mind over the fact that in episode 6 of the first season Salvo stumbles and introduces Mimi as “his Augello” instead of “his vice commissario” in front of people? Yes, yes I am.

djdksmsjdn Thank You For The Respect but I must have you know that it's either silly personal posting or, perhaps even worse, me liveblogging and cringeposting about trashy Rai tv dramas so like. I would not blame you if you lost that respect

Vuci mia cantannu vai, sung by Olivia Sellerio. Music by Andrea Guerra. Lyrics by Davide Camarrone.
A haunting Sicilian tune, made famous as theme for the TV series "The Young Montalbano" (Il giovane Montalbano).

Hi, i adore your blogs!
I'm starting to learn Italian. And i know that your are Italian as well. So it would be very helpful if you would recommend some good blogs/books/series that would have helped me to learn language. Thank you!
thank you :D
shows i'd recommend:
- zero: it's on netflix (or at least, here it is) and it's about a black young man living in milan who has a superpower. it is wholesome and it also deals with some serious topics like immigration, second-generation italians, racism etc etc
- la compagnia del cigno: it's a rai show (rai is the national broadcaster) and is about a group of teenagers who study classical music. very very nice and the second season features mehmet günsür acting in italian lol
- doc: another rai show, it's about a high-profile doctor who is shot by the father of one of his patients and afterwards loses his memory so he has to start from scratch
- diavoli: it was actually filmed in english but it's based on an italian book and it features alessandro borghi... which is always good. it's about the 2009 greece debt crisis (which turned into a european debt crisis) from the pov of an italian broker living in london
- il commissario ricciardi: set in naples during the fascist regime it's about a police inspector solving crimes. there's a very cute romance between the inspector and his neighbor
- l'allieva: my FAVE, it's about coroners (but you don't see anything gruesome, don't worry). the main character has great empathy with the victims and helps the police investigate murders even though that's not her job-- and her boss never fails to tell her that lmao. (also, she and her boss have great sexual tension wink wink)
- l'amica geniale: it's a worldwide bestseller, it's about two friends' lives in naples in the 1950s
- boris: the BEST italian show ever it's about a director shooting a very bad show for italian tv. it's the funniest ever but i don't know if it's ok for learners because the jokes aren't that easy to comprehend- imo
honourable mentions bc i don't think they're right for someone who is learning italian because the language is very difficult: il commissario montalbano, gomorra, suburra
books... i'm sorry but i don't read italian books. though at the moment i'm not reading ANY books because i'm too busy.
the thing with italian is that it has regional languages which are not just accents but languages with different words etc etc so a lot of book/shows are in those regional languages.
in the shows i have recommended the characters speak a clear italian (except maybe for boris but they just have a roman accent)
as for blogs... on here i follow @bravagente, which posts everything about italy

Hello, darling. I'm learning Italian but it's all a bit artificial when I'm just learning vocabulary and phrases. Do you have any films or tv series that you could recommend? I'm not very picky but I'm not really interested in granny shows or things for teens. I'd be grateful for any help but I'd most appreciate things that are on Netflix or other platforms as it'd probably make it easier for me to find subtitles. Also, I adore your blog and you seem to be such a lovely person. I adore you x
hi, honey. first of all, thank you so much! you’re an absolute sweetheart. this is probably one of the nicest asks i’ve ever got. it makes me incredibly happy when people want to learn italian :)! i don’t know if i can help, but let’s try.
tv shows/films you can find on netflix:
happy as lazzaro/lazzaro felice (i highly recommend it)
boris (this one is a comedy! it makes fun of the directors, actors and production teams involved in a popular fiction (an italian soap opera). if it’s not on netflix, you can watch it here with english subs)
luna nera (it tells the story of a teenager accused of witchcraft in 17th century Italy. i don’t find it particularly brilliant story wise, but it’s perfect for italian learners)
on my skin/sulla mia pelle (it’s about one of the most controversial cases of police brutality in italy. i highly recommend it, especially if you like true crime documentaries)
suburra (a crime drama and one of my favorite italian tv shows. i love it. characters mostly speak romanesco, the local dialect, so i wouldn’t recommend it if you’re a beginner. it’s worth a try, though!)
tv shows/films you can watch on rayplay and mediasetplay using a VNP (not sure if english subtitles are available, though) or you can find online:
they call me jeeg (a superhero movie, but make it italian. definitely unusual compared to the superhero movies we’re used to. oh, luca marinelli is the villain!)
capri revolution (historical drama set in pre wwi capri. characters often speak neapolitan, their regional language)
l’amica geniale/my brilliant friend (HBO drama set in post wwii naples narrating the turbulent friendship between lila and lenù. characters almost exclusively speak neapolitan (it was aired on tv with italian subtitles lol), so it’s not the best tv series to learn italian to. however, i love it and i think everyone should watch it)
che dio ci aiuti (it narrates the adventures of suor angela, a nun who gets herself involved in all sort of things. you can watch it on rai play)
il giovane montalbano (a young detective solves mysterious crimes in sicily)
volevo fare la rockstar (a family drama about olivia, a 27 year old single mom dealing with an existential crisis. i used to watch it on tv! it’s quite funny and lighthearted)
elisa di rivombrosa (probably the best known historical drama in italy. you can watch it on mediasetplay)
you can find many others tv series, films, reality show, etc. on rayplay and mediasetplay.
if you’re interested in italian lgbt movies, check this post (and follow the op! he’s a lot more helpful than i could ever be).
you could also try to watch tv series, films and cartoons dubbed in italian with english subs! italian dubs are the closest to standard italian. i’m sure you can find something on netflix. i also recommend listening to italian music and anime openings.
@ my italian friends: please feel free to add! it would be highly appreciated.
