Uh so people who have no clue what Flatland is, here's a quick summary:

The narrator, who hides his identity using the alias "A. Square", is a resident of a world called Flatland, a world that only exists in two dimensions, where every person is a flat geometric shape. A. Square tells us the history and culture of his world, which is rife with bigotry that he buys into without question. Until New Year's Eve, before the first day of the year 2000, when a mysterious stranger claiming to come from the third dimension appears in his living room, and starts saying things that sound absurd, and performing what seem like magic tricks.

The original Flatland: A Romance of Many Dimensions, was published in 1884 by Edwin Abbot Abbot. It is both a scathing political satire criticizing the systems of bigotry in Victorian England, and an entertaining introduction to the concept of more than three dimensions.

Please Help These Animals

Hi. I'm not normally the type of person who shares random charity posts; this blog has a gimmick that I don't want to break. But this is something important to me, and with the number of followers that I've somehow amassed, I felt a responsibility to try spreading the word about someone in a desperate situation.

This is Enzo and Diego, two tigers who live in South Africa. Like me, you might have seen some of their more-famous videos on YouTube several years ago.

Their owner, Michael Jamison, takes in rescued animals and raises them in a safe environment. This isn't some Tiger King scenario; he's not a stereotypical crazy rich guy who just owns exotic animals because he can. He got wealthy with a telecommunications business and then sold it a long time ago, and now just works day in and day out tending his flock. He's nursed many sick and hurt creatures back to health over the years, including bottle-feeding animals who can't eat on their own and rescuing a third malnourished tiger (Ozzie) from a circus. The tigers have a massive enclosed area with a pool and a fort, lots of space and friends to interact with, and they clearly love their owner.

Well, the South African economy has completely collapsed in the last 2 years, thanks to Covid and government mismanagement, and Michael is essentially flat broke now. And the YouTube algorithm destroyed his passive income…no one watches his videos anymore, so he can't get the word out about what's happening. I myself was wondering what had happened to him, and suddenly he popped back up in my feed after several years. He made a vlog last week discussing the situation, claiming that he'd barely eaten in days.

You're on Tumblr. You're probably a fierce anti-capitalist or something. If you're looking at his house and all the shit he owns and wondering "Why would I give money to a rich guy? Why doesn't he sell stuff? The dude has a helicopter and a suit of armor in his effing living room..." well, remember, South Africa's economy is in the toilet for everyone. Not to mention their country's import/export sanctions, and his lack of consistent internet. Michael's trying hard, but he can't really sell things because there's no one to buy them.

That's the tragic irony - the dude has 1 million subs but his videos can't get 10k views, and is surrounded by all this rich guy crap but can't afford to eat. And, besides, this isn't really about him.

The government is threatening to take his house and his animals, and with the way things are in South Africa right now, it's a guarantee that they will not be put in good homes. They all rely completely on Michael and his girlfriend Jackie. They're family.

Stumbling on this situation broke my heart, and I don't want to see Enzo & Diego (or any of his other animals) lose their dad and be put down or thrown into an abusive third-world zoo environment. He has a paypal, a merch store, and a GoFundMe. If even a tiny fraction of my followers donated a tiny bit to keeping his head above water, or at least shared his videos with other people, it would help tremendously.

I just hope it's not too late.

How to help Jimin this week

This is for US/PR ARMYs. International puppykitties, please keep going with whatever you know works in your countries. Fighting!

So last week, you might have bought Jimin's two physical albums and/or digital versions at Target, Amazon, iTunes, and WeVerse. And when the alternative covers for the digital album dropped on the BTS US store, maybe you got those too. If you didn't? Please do that by this Wednesday night at the latest.

So what happens this week, to avoid free fall?

Welp, you can buy the digital album on Qobuz using your Facebook login if you want, it's very easy. You can go pick up the 4 physical single CDs from the BTS US Store, if you wanna do that.

Despite COVID and appendicitis and mail tampering and apartment seizure and death threats, Jimin worked hard on concerts and his album and Expo duties--even falling asleep in the studio most nights. For 10 long months, Jimin quietly took his pain and his loneliness and he turned it into art. He coded and he hid a love track... and he paid to do music shows and did fan calls... all for fans because he had something to share with us... and those of us who love him clearly see what he meant us to.

He did all this, and he made history. And the first thing he did was come live to credit BTS and ARMY.

Of course ARMY will have his back now, right?

How I Found a Pair of Unobtainium Kits and used a Proxy Service to Increase My Backlog by Two

First and foremost, this is not sponsored. I don’t even take sponsors for my comic – the thing that is effectively my career – so there’s no way I’d do so for the thing I do as a fun hobby. This is all me and my personal experience using a proxy service to buy stuff from Japan.

Anyhoo! What follows is my experience using the proxy buying service called Buyee to purchase a pair of Catsith kits on the Japanese version of the Mercari website. I went into this knowing that many a Retro Tech and Gunpla YouTuber I’ve watched has used it to get stuff. Figured I’d give it shot.

I have had on my old “Kits to Buy” list the HG Catsith – a cute looking grunt suit from the series Mobile Suit Gundam: Reconguista in G (G-Reco for short) – for a while now. It's been sitting on one of my Amazon Wish Lists for so long it’s kind of become a marker for old stuff that never really comes up for a decent price. I say “Decent" because the lowest price it’s ever popped up at was around like $40? It usually runs around $60 or more if it ever pops up for sale.

This is a kit that's Supposed to be priced between $15 to $24 give or take where it's coming from.

Unlike the Hero suit, the G-Self, the Catsith is stuck in relative obscurity thanks to Bandai never reprinting the thing. It may be a Grunt suit but it’s not like a GM or a Zaku. Most of the other characters ended up with fancier mechs that got their own kits. That and G-Reco isn’t all that popular compared to some other Gundam series so you don’t end up with random reprints for the toy hungry fanbase.

Time passed and I’d recently found that it’s harder to find neat stuff for my various family members and myself for the holidays and whatnot. My getting the younger folks into Anime and video games is proving to be double-edged sword. Now… I've known about proxy services like Buyee for a while now. They tend to be talked up in Retro Tech and Gunpla videos as a place through which the various YouTubers have purchased stuff. Having seen their results so many times, I figured it was time to give it a try.

Setting up an account was easy enough. Nothing really too different from setting one up at any other online shop. The one thing that’s really different is it's more akin to the old Metacrawler search engine. You can select the shop you want to search but I kinda’ just winged it and tried out Mercari. No rhyme or reason to it. Just the one I though might have something neat that wasn’t a straight up auction site.

At first, I just kinda’ popped in “Gundam" and saw what dropped. Then I remembered something important: It's searching Japanese sites. It makes more sense to use the language of the folks who post things there. So I took a leap and looked up the Catsith’s Japanese name and BAM! I got a whole bunch of hits. Not just the usual “This is a Gundam Kit” results that I normally get searching English language sites but actual kits – both prebuilt and unbuilt kits. It was here I found a listing for two unbuilt kits.

Needless to say, I bought it as soon as I could.

Now things get fun.

Whenever I do something like this (buy something through a site I’m personally unsure of), I use my PayPal account. It acts as a buffer between my personal bank account and the site if things get squirrelly and, if it works, acts as a buffer between my personal bank account and the site if I decide to go on a spending spree. The more steps I put between myself and buying things, the better I am at not putting myself into debt.

I say this because I’m kinda’ to blame for the added time on getting these into my grubby little hands. It took a bit to transfer funds into my PayPal account to use on both buying the items and paying for shipping. -.-

The price for the two kit bundle came out to 4300 Yen or $30.50 at the time of purchase. That’s 3800 Yen for the item, 300 Yen to Buyee to buy the item, 500 Yen for their in-house checking and a 300 Yen coupon to save a Little bit of money on the whole dealie. This all gets the package to Buyee’s warehouse. They can hold stuff there free of charge for 30 days. You can also buy more and consolidate it later… but this time I did a single package.

After some doing and some waiting on money transfers on my end, we get to the hardest part of any international buying: Shipping!

Buyee gives a Bunch of options for shipping. Everything from fairly quick choices to ocean shipping that will take months. Needless to say, I took them up on their Buyee Air service that would take around a week to get here. It cost me 5188 Yen or $37.05 for the one package. Again, Proxy Services (or just international shops that let you consolidate items) tend to work best when you buy multiple items. That’s when shipping gets low enough to not be more than the original item.

All in all, I’m in $67.55 for two kits that would’ve run me about $7 less if I could find and buy just the one on a site like Amazon. The time from start to finish was a little under two weeks. I ended up with not one but Two unobtainium kits and a way for me to shop for the Holidays when my nieces and nephews ask for items that just never come to or came stateside. = )

Twitch Revenue Sharing: An Unrealistic Proposal

It’s been years since Phil Fish wanted YouTubers to pay him money for playing FEZ on YouTube. The prevailing counter-argument is that exposure is better than no exposure, and having people play your games on Twitch or YouTube without licensing your work for public performance means other people will see and buy it, leading to increased sales, and more revenue than you could have possibly gotten from a licensing deal. In my experience, this is not true. I understand the analogy to piracy of music and AAA games, but even that is an argument about economics of scale, not about morals.

In my own experience, this doesn’t even happen with free games. On the analytics of my own games, I saw that having YouTubers play them did almost nothing to page views or free downloads. A thousand views in one day don’t translate into one additional download, maybe three page views. The only significant effect was that one YouTube video about one of my games got small many MineCraft YouTubers to make copycat videos. A spike in downloads corresponded one-to-one with the number of YouTube videos with under a hundred views on small channels run by teenage boys.

I don’t think adding an EULA to my games that explicitly covers public performance would do anything. I could consult a lawyer to make it legally enforceable, but I could not enforce it in practice. Twitch and YouTube have cornered the market on gaming content, and even though Nintendo don’t like it when you play their games as a public performance YouTube turn a blind eye. What game developers need isn’t the copyright, what we need is the cooperation of YouTube and Twitch to allow us to enforce our copyrights. Twitch and Youtube have basically cornered the market. 

We could have a chance if instead of trying to legislate or enforce public performance rights for games, we could just pressure YouTube and Twitch into codifying something into their terms of service. I know it won’t happen in practice. I don’t know what to do about YouTube. Youtube would rather ban a game from their site or negotiate a rather one-sided deal, and many YouTube videos exist in a grey area between fair use and entertainment.

I know what to do about Twitch though. I know what kind of deal I would want from them, anyway: When a streamer sets the game, a percentage of the revenue goes to the game developer. This could be 10%-30% of the ad revenue, and 2% of cheers and subscriptions, (out of Twitch’s cut of cheers and subscriptions). If the game is set to “IRL“ or “Just Chatting“, the revenue works the way it does today. There would be a lot of gnashing of teeth about PayPal donations (outside of twitch’s hands) and gifted subscriptions (do they count over the whole month, or for the moment they are gifted?), but I think this system would be fair, and a marked improvement over the status quo.

With YouTube, there is a lot more “long tail“ revenue, and videos are sometimes critique, or machinima, or edited with clips from different games. YouTube ad revenue is straightforward, but the copyright question is thorny. Twitch is live-streamed gaming, so copyright-wise and morally it’s a lot easier to just enable revenue sharing by default for twitch streams of the game, and every twitch stream has to have a game category listed (or arts and crafts, beaches, IRL, just chatting, game shows, demos, game development...).

If we managed to implement such a scheme, it would probably be through some kind of EU copyright directive. On balance, it would be terrible, because large conglomerates like Amazon, Alphabet, Apple and Microsoft would fight it every step of the way and try to make it not worth it for developers, algorithmically punishing developers of games that take a cut. It would also be terrible because it involves automated copyright enforcement. The only way this could turn out favourably for game developers is of the EU commission and US congress simultaneously threatened Amazon/Twitch with regulation, because Twitch already has streams categorised by game.

But if we somehow managed to get Twitch to cut in the developers, I think this would align the incentives between developers and streamers. We wouldn’t have to awkwardly say “but the people who watch the stream might buy the game for themselves.“ Even a story-based game with no replay value after you know the endings would have all the incentives aligned between streamers, stream audiences, and developers.

This poetry book includes poems from over the span of six years which cover my trajectory through depression, a messy breakup, healing, and eventually opening back up to love. Each poem has a corresponding illustration, drawn by me as well.

This book is filled with poetry that encapsulates my experiences with chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and POTS; my deteriorating relationship with my parents due to their homophobia and bigotry; and my journey to find love (and finally getting that!!). Throughout it all are themes of a deep desire to be known completely and chosen, not despite, but because of everything that I am.

why do i need money + about me(tw: mental health related issues)

I am a 21 y/o artist and student from Poland, I am unemployed. I need money for fulfilling my art projects i dreamed about since i was a child. it's not really urgent or anything, but i just want to finally be able to create and tell things I want through my art

the projects i am currently working on are:

my comic on webtoon- story i have been working on since i was 14

my songs! i've written a lot of songs which i want to produce and actually publish +make some cool mvs

overall my youtube channel which is kind of dead but i want to start video essays regarding mental health  

I need money so I can actually pursue those projects. I want to fix my guitar, pay my friends for producing my music, want to promote my art (boosting posts etc)

I've suffered from depression since I was 12. I've developed avoidance and anxiety personality disorder and social phobia.  It has always been hard for me to interact with people even through the internet cause i am just simply scared. i am scared of my close friends, family and it is just really hard to live at this point

i had a job till the end of last year. When I was working there i was too tired to do anything that actually made me happy. last summer i was in psych ward because i just was too harsh on myself cause i was working and going to uni at the same time

so it is kind of: if i get a job i will have money- but i will be too tired to create anything 

to be honest, the only thing keeping me alive was the thought that one day i actually might live the life of an artist. the life that i am able to do things i actually enjoy

cause for the past years i've been stuck in the same place of doing what people want from me and not what i actually want. i didn't have a chance to say what i want to say

the things i am creating are deeply related to mental health issues. i want to create things that might help people find comfort in them, to create something they can relate to. it might sound cliche but i really believe that it is not the casual s(he's) br(ok)en type of stuff, i try to do a lot of research, talk with other people to understand how they feel

a lot of people are telling me that my words help them and i want to do that. i want to help people by doing what i can do best

i might be oversharing, but it is just, i never had a chance to speak out loud what i want to say. and art was the only way for me to show how i feel

but it also is painful when the creations you poured your soul into is made for no one 

so i would be really happy if you would buy my art to support me 

and maybe help me live the life i've dreamed about since i was a child

Update to buying guides

Last week, it was best practice to re-use emails from the week prior to buy on the BTS US Store.

In a shocking turn of events that surprises no one, the game is changing again...

This week, many are saying Billboard's new rules are now one email = one purchase on each site.

So I am interpreting this to mean I can use roobastmoon AT my email DOT com once on iTunes, Amazon, Target, BTS US Store, etc., and then that's it. Time to make a new email, use a new payment method, for the next time I buy.

Personally, I've made a new email and I got a VISA prepaid gift card from my grocery story so I can buy all digitals this week. But otherwise I have to focus on streaming. I have major deadlines and work travel, so I cannot reach out to funding accounts and make a bunch of new PayPal purchases again.

I'm so hoping we can come together this week to pinch-hit for each other--those with the energy to use funding accounts, please buy for Jimin and Yoongi.
