"You're late," he said in a manner of greeting, voice uncharacteristically soft. "Again."

Rafayel was not fooled. "Sorry, I was just--"

"Making excuses?"

He shot Zayne a glare, a furious tint of red coloring his cheeks, travelling downward, and disappearing behind the V of his shirt.

The moment he did, the first crack of the doctor's nonchalance started to show. Soft eyes slanting into intense sharpness. A corner of the mouth quirking upward, showing perfect white teeth.

"Might I remind you that you lost a bet, and yet..." Zayne's voice dropped several octaves, gliding lower into a husky, breathy thing that sent shivers rolling down his spine. "...you dare make me wait. I was beginning to think that you've run away."

Rafayel folded his arms across his chest, trying to put something between them. And in hopes of concealing how his cold hands were trembling.

He faced the doctor head-on, never mind the loud beating drum that was his heart. "Have I ever disappointed you, doctor?"

"There's always a first time for everything."
