Never thought I'd ever find myself at home on Thursday night playing with my paints, yet here we are. . Pre-covid my art days were on weekdays and on Thursday I pack up my stuff, put it away for the weekend. Take it all out again soon as the kids are off to school once the weekend is over. . But now its turned all upside down. Weekday is practically no art days, maybe a couple of digital doodles while the kids have their virtual lessons. Come Thursday I pull out my paints and markers. 😅😅 . How is your Thursday night looking? Movie marathons? Going out? I was reading on the Velcro-Teflon effect today and found it fascinating. It is about how we react to the negative and positive in our lives. . We always forget the good things that happened, and remember the not so good with so much more clarity. The negative sticks to us like Velcro. You'll remember all the bad experiences from many years ago, but the positive habits, the positive experiences, they slide right off, just like as if its on Teflon (the non stick stuff on pans) Its human nature. It's what has always happened and what will keep happening. . One of the ways to change this and to tap into your happy thoughts is to spend couple of minutes a day to contemplate about the things that have been good, to be mindful and to be actively grateful for everything that is going right for you. Nothing fancy, just small things like, I had a good breakfast this morning. 🥪 or I got to drink my coffee while it was still warm today ☕ (all food related but you get the idea.) . Tell me one thing that's been good today. Me, I managed to do 30 mins of yoga in the morning 💖 . If you want to know more about this Velcro-Teflon effect , there is a TED talk about it. Throwback to this massive painting and wonderful opportunity. The exhibition happened only in February, but it feels like so so long ago. But I can still remember, the girls in out art group were cautioning each other to stay safe. We didnt even know what we were dealing with back then. It hadn't yet reached our shores. I never in a million years thought that I would be displaying my artwork at a gallery for an exhibition. It was surreal 😅 alhamdulillah when I look back and think, from the time I started getting serious about my art and wanting to get somewhere with it, each year has had some serious milestones. 2020 brought my first ever exhibition, and hopefully inshaAllah many more to come. Frankly speaking though, I never thought my art was a gallery kinda art. More like a splash it all over the walls on the street kinda thing 😅😅 I mean that is what I always aimed for. I didn't get there yet. I got some place else. But I will keep trying for the street too 😄 • Quick shout out to my art girls. What would I do without you girls? What is your favourite way to de-stress? Mine is usually aimless doodling or journaling. Both things I have been doing since my teen years. Hello folks. Here is my top four tips to create the perfect mandala 1. Make sure you get your grid down perfectly. It is tricky but can be done. The grid is the backbone to your mandala, so get it right. Keep your pencils sharp and work slowly. 2. Plan out your mandala. Map out exactly what you want on each circle. You can draw the entire thing in pencil first , or just draw one segment of each step only. When you are all done, then you go back and ink. I do this mostly when I am doing a commissioned work. 3. Speed. I cannot stress this enough. When inking, go slow. Dont let all the #hyperlapses you see on IG fool you. Those are there to show you 10 hours of work squeezed in 1 minute. Draw slowly!! 4. When you're adding color, never just wing it. Find out what colors work harmoniously together. Even if you have to make a copy of your mandala and do some rough coloring, go ahead and do that. So just something I've been thinking about. Most of the people I follow on Instagram are artists of various kinds, and included in that is a big chunk of mandala artists. I follow them to show them support, like "hey we are in this together yea" kinda thing. But at times it also feels like, their styles creep into my style. Unconsciously of course. I just see the art while scrolling and admire it , tap a heart, leave a comment and move on, but later when I'm drawing it will come to haunt me (so to speak) 🤣. So sometimes I go around and "mute" a lot of artists 🙈 and at times I think twice before i follow someone, specially if i feel their art my influence my art heavily. I hate that it happens, but guess that is part of it too. I want to create genuine art that's from me 100%, but then again, we are all heavily influenced by what we see around us right? Oh well! Any thoughts on this? Do you experience this?
