My friend is showing me your page. There is much arguing and I can not vote in the us, but I wonder what I could do to learn more to help. I can not risk my work visa though. Sorry to bother
hi anon, i was saving this to answer until i got to my laptop.
i have a tag that's #resources that may be of help to you; it's sort of a catch-all tag for any sort of resources, but here are a few highlights:
palestinian resources masterlist (history)
introduction to abolition reading list
my post about how to learn more about cuba/help the cuban cause
intro to black/decolonial feminism recommendations
another prison abolition resource list
how to get into anticapitalist politics resource list
resource list on CIA interventionism and US backed coups
intro to decolonization
anti-imperalism reading list
post-colonial theory reading list
it is an awful lot of reading and/or engaging with history and theory, and i agree that it can be daunting, but this is not a race, and you can take it slowly and at your own pace.
of course, as you are not a citizen (it seems? since you're on a work visa) please keep yourself safe. of course you don't have to go to protests/demonstrations if your safety could be at risk or you could risk deportation, but there are plenty of less high stakes work you can do around your community.
you can support the Innocence Project, who work to prevent people from being executed on the death penalty; you don't even need a US address to sign their petitions, just a zip code. there may also be prison abolition groups/prisoner outreach programs more specific to where you live that you may be able to help with. there may be bail funds near you that need donations or assistance.
you can see if your community has a Food Not Bombs group and volunteer with them, and if not, there's most likely a local soup kitchen/food pantry that could use volunteers.
you may have a university near you that has an SJP (Students for Justice for Palestine) and you can see if they need any help/volunteers/etc for their events, and they may also be a good resource just for education.
the point here is to connect with your community and see what the needs around you are. the united states government thrives on individualism and on its citizens being so isolated from each other.
above all it really is a learning curve. study the revolutionary movements of the past (and present!) in places like cuba, burkina faso, vietnam, haiti, etc... do what you can. this ask wasn't a bother at all.

november fic round up
had a busy november! all the fics that got updated and posted:
The Jacket Exchange: A Dallas Winston/Ponyboy Curtis Ship Manifesto — updated this, and addressed the musical. [chapter eight] exodus to eden — At the bottom of Jay Mountain lay the town Jasper. It wasn't a very big town — just enough to have its own zip code, a few neighborhoods within spitting distance of each other, more than one store, two movie theaters, three gas stations, two diners, and a host of various other locations solely meant to cater to the tourists that came through whether they be people entranced with the wildlife on Jay Mountain or wanting to indulge in skiing or other pursuit. [chapter ten here]
abel was no lamb, he was my brother — When Darry had envisioned everything, the day that he brought Ponyboy home, he thought it would be something he would remember for the rest of his life. It was a simple fantasy, the only one he allowed himself in the years as leads went cold, as life wore on, as things went on. [chapter three & four]
rain or shine — There's a fascination to Ponyboy's gaze whenever Dallas does something that he deems very human, whether it be the small signals of Dallas' oncoming ruts or cutting his fingernails or recently, shaving his facial hair until it's more manageable if not gone; those things seem to fascinate him endlessly, tracking whenever they happen with surprise and interest that is more than odd for Dallas.
nocturnal animals — "You keep eating that burger like that and you're gonna choke," Dallas says, leaning back as Ponyboy continues to tear into it, the cigarette behind his ear sticking out. Snow continues to fall in a steady pace through the windows, making shadows on his face. [chapter four]
pathways — The flowers in Ponyboy's hair makes him resemble those hippies that Angela saw on television or saw in magazines, his hair so long that he could almost be mistaken for one of those people — except he has no message about Vietnam, has no words coming out of his mouth talking about a guru and she's starting to believe a snake would look at home with him.
radiant — It was all Ponyboy could do, to give her the little food he had. His mother, who'd been so radiant, so gold was now almost a husk of herself. For once, she didn't turn him down for the offer, eating slowly, quietly in the living room. It had been six long, lonely months in that prison and it showed on every inch of her.
fire in the sky — "Mr. Curtis, please see me after class," Mr. Syme says as he places Ponyboy's quiz down in front of him, face down. Shit, that wasn't good.
Ponyboy feels dread creeping up his spine as Mr. Syme continues to pass back the quizzes to everyone. The looks he's getting from other students vary from amused to concerned — pity, really. Being in an honors class did that and as soon as Mr. Syme gets to the front of the class, Ponyboy peeks at his paper.
A B- stares up at him. [chapter 79 to 81]
summer nights — The music keeps going in the barn, and Dallas keeps tasting like bourbon as Ponyboy keeps on kissing him, keeps on letting Dallas get his hand around Ponyboy's belt.
in the dollhouse — Tulsa, 1967. It's the last spring break before Ponyboy goes to college. He's got more worries than what he thought he'd have, including his relationship with Dallas Winston. All he wants to do is have one last party before he goes to a future he's more than earned.
Too bad that the boardgame he brought to the party is not just a boardgame. It's a matter of life and death, to play against Julian. And it's not just Ponyboy who's a player in this game, but the whole gang, or what's left of it. They just have to survive their own nightmares, one by one and hope they'll all wake up in the morning, the victors.
get busy living, or get busy dying — Six months after Johnny dies, the prodigal son of Tulsa comes back home. Dallas has never exchanged more than two sentences with him. But… Ponyboy seems like a good place to start putting himself back together. [this is currently listed as anon until the wanksgiving 2024 event is over on 12.5.24!]

~ Family ~
Grandfather: John Ralston
A veteran of the Vietnam war, John Ralston was part of a small test group who were given an iteration of the Super Soldier Serum. Although it initially showed no effect on it’s subjects, the serum soon sent those given it to an earlier grave, with each soldier dying of a mysterious ailment within two years of receiving their “mandatory vaccinations.” Although the project was deemed a failure due to none of the subjects showing any signs of enhanced physicality, later research discovered that the serum had altered the subjects’ DNA structures, passing down dormant gene marker that, when activated, caused the serum’s effects to appear in the individual who possessed the gene.
Father: Rupert Ralston
Although Rupert never met his father, his mother often told him he could have been his twin, in looks and temperament. He followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the army not long after he married his wife, Louise. Rupert served for almost twenty years before he sustained an injury from shrapnel and was confined to a wheelchair. Although Rupert never showed signs of the serum taking effect, DNA collected by HYDRA operative and tested by S.H.I.E.L.D following the raid on the Ralston household found that the gene had indeed been present, and was likely passed down to Rupert’s two children.
Mother: Louise Ralston
As a girl, Louise Ralston used the brag that her uncle knew Captain America. She used to pull out her mother’s photos of scrawny little Steve Rogers with her uncle Bucky and bring them for show and tell. Ruth remembered when the Smithsonian contacted Louise for photos of the Captain and his childhood friend and Louise spent a week digging through the attic with Ruth’s help to find all the old pictures and artifacts they could. Rupert even took Louise and Ruth to Washington to see the exhibit when it was opened to the public.
Brother: Jackson “Jacks” Ralston
Nearly fifteen years older than Ruth, Jacks never had a close relationship with his sister. When Ruth was not even three, her brother joined the military. He was killed in combat by her fifth birthday. Although she never knew her brother, his picture on the mantle and the stilted yearly dinners on his birthday meant she never forgot him either.
Great-Uncle: James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes
Ruth meets Bucky in the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, at the Captain America tribute exhibit. In front of the photos of Bucky himself, that her mother had donated. It’s easy to recognize him, when you’ve seen his photo and heard the stories all your life, also when he calls you by your dead grandmothers name. It’s probably easier than it should be, to convince him to take Ruth with him. It’s nice, not to be alone, even if the running goes from state-to-state to cross-continents. Life feels…routine, normal, at least as normal as you can get when you’re two Enhanced people on the run from basically everyone. Ruth clings to Bucky like a lifeline, even if he’s a trained assassin and over 90 years old, he’s still the only family she’s got left. And he does the same. Two years pass easily, and by the time Steve Rogers busts into their Bucharest apartment, Ruth doesn’t hesitate to start swinging.
~ Personality & Traits ~
Personality: They say Super Serum amplifies the traits already existing in an individual, but when the Serum is there from day one, what does that give you? Ruthann Ralston, apparently. Impulsive and rash, Ruth has a short temper and a mouth that would make a nun blush. She has more shitty jokes here than even the punniest of dads, and delights in using them at any opportunity. Ruth’s very resourceful and self-sufficient, determined to survive no matter the odds. To Ruth, she’s seen (and done) more than enough to warrant independence, despite her youth. She feels a lot of survivor’s guilt for what she sees as getting her entire family killed because of what she is. Despite this, she is very compassionate and trusts people who show kindness to her. She’s generally pretty unwilling to let others govern her and strongly sticks to that belief that respect is earned. And with her, it’s hard-won.
Likes: Math, numbers, puns, terrible jokes (like real stinkers), track and field, lacrosse, blue raspberry slushies, independence, close combat, competition
Dislikes: Anything cherry flavoured, being told what to do, using rifles/sniper rifles, cereal, unsalted butter, basketball, avocados, feeling trapped or restrained, being treated like a sidekick, dramatic motivational pep talks, cold weather, people who “don’t listen to music”
~ Relationships ~
Best Friend(s):
Maya Jameson (Formerly)
Shuri
Friends:
Peter Parker
Steve Rogers
Wanda Maximoff
Sam Wilson
Yelena Belova
Allies:
T’Challa

Enemies:

~ Misc. & Notes ~
She’s fluent in Romanian.
Ruth has a tendency to try and automatically take her opponent to the ground, even if they have size and weight over her. This can be a great decision or a terrible one, depending on her opponent. Mostly a terrible one, when she’s sparring with Bucky or Steve.
Rocket once tried to recruit her for an off-world job. He figured she had “just the right level of recklessness”, but that got shut down almost immediately, to her disappointment.
Her and Peter had a rivalry. He beat her at the airport (barely!) and she’s made it her mission to beat him in a rematch.
She loves cats, but they seem to hate her.
After the “Civil War,” Ruth stuck with Steve after he freed her from the Raft. While Bucky was in cryo, Steve kind of took over for him. Ruth saw Bucky again in 2018 for the fight in Wakanda.
Ruth is fundamentally against using umbrellas. “Face the rain or stay inside.”
She learned how to fall asleep quickly and sleep lightly fast. She still does it to this day.
When Ruth was twelve, she tried to teach herself to juggle and ended up giving herself a concussion from tripping on one of her juggling balls and falling into a cabinet.
She keeps a “go bag” of money, food and clothes squirrelled away in her room. Everywhere she lived after what happened to her family. At first, it was a necessity, to stay ready to run from whoever was chasing her and Bucky. Now it’s just a habit.
The last thing she saw before being Blipped was Bucky disintegrating in front of her.
bucky and ruth = joel and ellie on steroids

Eldritch Television
September 21st, 2024, at the United States hidden research lab in Sandpoint Idaho, General Bill Hall walks into the base. The local newspaper is in his hand as he balances his hot chocolate in the other. The man rushes through the crowd of quantum physicists as he makes a sharp turn and nearly collides with Hugo Pacheco. Aka the local janitor who had just finished cleaning up a coffee spill on a desk that contained what used to be a blueprint for teleportation. The sudden stop of General Hall causes some of his hot chocolate to leap out and reclaim the stain on the table. Hugo sighs as he cleans up the stain once again.
“ Sorry about that Hugo I am in a rush. Dr. Pasak Simon said that today will be a day to remember,” General Hall said with a cheeky smile as he moved his hot chocolate closer to Hugo almost pointing at the man.
The steam fogs up Hugo's glasses as he looks at the General unamused. After a few seconds of silence Hugo speaks, “Señor Hall, de nuevo, no… hablo o comprehender…inglés.”
The general laughs and bends over slapping his knee. The vibrations transfer through the man's fat to his other hand where more hot chocolate falls on the stain. “ Man, I love your one-liners, Hugo. You should go into comedy,” Says General Hall.
“ Hugo stop distracting the general! There is an important broadcast that he needs to see,” Dr. Simon says in a clingy tone as his bedhead hair covers his eyes.
General Hall walks over there as Hugo sighs in relief. Once General Hall is across the crowd of people he sees Dr. Simon bent over at his computer with a long string of numbers generating from his computer screen. General Hall looks at the text with amusement unsure as to what they mean. He just admires the stimulation like a baby with keys.
Dr. Simon snaps his fingers and gets the general's attention as he then speaks, “General this is the most complex code that has ever existed on Earth. With the help of our supercomputers, I was able to make an algorithm to translate it. The language is unlike anything we have ever seen before. We believe that it came from space or another dimension. This could be the first contact I figured you would want to be the first one to hear it.”
“ Brown noser,” General Hall says while coughing into his elbow with his hot chocolate arm causing some to fly into his nose.
“ What was that sir?” Dr. Simon asks beating his eyes for the misheard compliment.
“ Nothing, uh… play that message right away doctor,” General Hall orders.
Dr. Simon pressed the button as the supercomputer began to transmute the message to something the humans could understand. The room turns 10 degrees hotter as the computers run on full power to get the message of the otherworldy beings across. Dr. Simon bounces in his chair unable to contain his excitement while General Hall daydreams about the promotion he will get for this discovery. A promotion that will pay him so well he can finally afford that sailboat he’s always wanted. The room is deafened by the roar of the machines as the people go silent.
Suddenly a piercing ringing is heard that sounds like glass shattering in reverse as a long inhale and a longer exhale is heard. The pause feels like an eternity when finally the alien Bigelli speaks, “ Do you think Earth fell off after World War Two?”
“ Yeah… the Vietnam war was interesting but I was more interested in the subplots going on like Woodstock, or when that colony of ants from Flordia overthrew their queen in 2004. Honestly, Earth kinda jumped the shark after 9/11. That changed everything, especially with that internet thing. It’s so annoying how many interesting people they introduce to it and do nothing with. Like whatever happened to Filthy Frank?” the alien known as Zip Zomp says.
“ He became the singer Joji,” says Bigelli as the sound of him taking another hit from his tesseract is being heard while the humans look at each other trying to find what emotion they should be perceiving.
Hugo's hands began to shake as his chest heaves trying to physically process the reality. He is unable to shut his eyes as they feel like they are drying from the shock. His hands slap his cheeks as he exclaims, “Madre Mia! Me vida es una mentira!”
Once Hugo runs out everyone looks at him confused as Dr. Simon lets out a nervous chuckle, “ I guess the alien language translated itself to Spanish for Hugo… hehe how convenient… right boss?”
“ Huh, I didn’t know Hugo was tri-lingual,” General Hall responds as his eyes stare off into space.
“ Ah, yeah I remember now. Like I said they had too many characters to keep track of. Especially the humans, why did they think it was a good idea to have 8 million at once?!? What the hell were the writers thinking? I’m glad the wormwood and nuclear fimble winter caused by the Russians bombing the Thwaites glacier wiped most of them out in 2034,” Zip Zomp says.
“ Yeah that was really foreshadowed well with the lore, especially with the Hindu Kali Yuga,” says Bigelli.
“ Agreed, though I wish they didn’t have to rely on cameos to give lore. Like Zeus coming in and shipping himself with a lot of the characters he wrote while his wife scolded him? Kinda pervy if you asked me,” says Zip Zomp.
“ Yeah, I wished they did more cameos though. They kinda chickened out after a bunch of humans nailed Jesus to a cross. I mean the dude was fine three days later so it’s kinda weird they stopped,” Bigelli says.
“ It means they had a few more cameos like the Fonz,” Zip Zomp states.
“ I guess, hey who do you ship in the show?” Bigelli asks his friend.
“ Oh easy my OTP is David Neal and Rob French I don’t know what it is but I think they would make a good couple,” Zip Zomp says.
“ Eh, I see them more as friends. I mean they worked together during Supreme General Bill Hall's new world order,” Bigelli says as everyone in the room stares at the to-be Supreme General who takes a minute to respond by stepping backward and nursing on his hot choclate.
“ Didn’t Dr. Pasak Simon overthrow him after poisoning his hot chocolate?” Zip Zomp asks causing the General to stop as he glares at Dr.Simon who gives a friendly wave to defuse the hostilities.
“ He did and then died 38 years later by public hanging in São Luís by Brazilian resistance fighters,” Bigelli explains as Dr.Simon stops waving and gives a side-eye glace at the translator.
“ Oh yeah! I remember that… I remember the scene where Pasak Simon was in hell. Man, he cried like a little girl after being impaled with 6 pitchforks covered in tetanus,” Zip Zomp says with a nostalgic laugh as Dr. Simon slowly turns off the transmission.
Dr. Simon looks at General Hall with tears in his eyes as he shakily takes off his glasses. “ Sir… I don’t want to go to Hell,” he says with a panicked breath that fuels his tears like a fan to a flame.
“ You don’t have to. I don’t have to become supreme general as long as that means you’ll stay my friend,” General Hall says with tears coming down from his eyes landing in his dumped-out hot chocolate.
“ You really mean that?” Dr. Simon asks as his eyes swell with tears. Slowly falling down due to the quiver of his lips.
“ I do, come here you cry baby!” General Hall says opening his arms.
Dr. Simon gets up from his seat and hugs him as the room erupts in confused cheers. Dr. Simon then exits the embrace and adjusts his glasses, “ Wait a second, if they were talking about the future. Does that mean events are set in stone? If our reality is just a TV show to them, does that mean our choices don’t matter? Is free will a lie?”
“ The transmission log has an answer to that sir,” One of the scientist states.
“ Well, what are you waiting for spill it out for us!” General Hall demands.
“ To paraphrase, Bigelli says that, “we are the choices we make. Big events may be carved in stone but it's the decisions that lead us there that have the biggest impact on the way things turn out. If it wasn’t for free will, us aliens wouldn’t have multiple earths as” … let me make sure I am reading this right… “nonfundable tokens?”” The scientist says moving his head back slightly to make sure he is reading it correctly.
“ Oh NFT’s I have 10 of those!” General Hall exclaims proudly as the room collectively faces palms.

Study Reveals Cities Influence Rainfall Patterns
We've all heard of the urban heat island effect, where cities are warmer than their rural surroundings. Now, scientists have identified a similar phenomenon called the urban "rain island effect," where cities seem to receive more rainfall than nearby rural areas.
In a groundbreaking study, researchers analyzed rainfall patterns in over 1,000 cities worldwide and discovered that more than 60% of them experience higher precipitation levels compared to their rural surroundings.
youtube
In some instances, the difference is significant, as highlighted in the study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. For example, flood-prone Houston averages nearly five inches more rain annually than the surrounding rural areas.
The study’s findings carry significant implications for urban areas, with the most concerning being the increased risk of flash flooding in densely developed regions.
Why do cities get more rain?
What causes cities to receive more rainfall than surrounding areas? According to study co-author Zong-Liang Yang, a professor at the Jackson School of Geosciences at the University of Texas at Austin, one major factor is the presence of tall buildings. These structures block or slow down wind, causing air to converge toward the city center, which can lead to more rainfall.

https://www.behance.net/gallery/202051419/Weather-Forecast-For-77377-Tomball-TX
“Cities often have tall buildings that cause air to converge or pile up,” explained meteorologist Marshall Shepherd, a former NASA scientist and co-author of the study, now at the University of Georgia. “It’s like two trains colliding—their front ends rise up. That’s convergence.”
The city's buildings create lift, pushing warm, moist air from the surface into the cooler air above, where it can form rain clouds.
Another factor is the urban heat island effect. According to NASA, the warmer temperatures in cities create unstable air. When city-heated air rises, it cools and condenses, forming rain clouds that typically drench areas downwind.
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in 31410 - Savannah GA
Other cities also experience increased rainfall. Alongside Houston, the Miami-Fort Lauderdale-West Palm Beach metro area also shows a significant difference between urban and rural precipitation, according to the new study. Globally, cities like Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, and Lagos in Nigeria were similarly notable.
In general, cities with larger populations, higher aerosol emissions, and more pronounced urban heat island effects tend to see greater increases in annual rainfall.

How was the study conducted?
Researchers analyzed daily precipitation using high-resolution satellite data for 1,056 cities worldwide, from 2001 to 2020. They compared annual rainfall, extreme precipitation events, and long-term trends in each city to those in nearby rural areas. The study found that 63% of cities received more annual rainfall within and downwind of their urban areas than the surrounding countryside.
In Southeast Asia, cities like Ho Chi Minh and Kuala Lumpur—known for rapid urbanization and population growth—exemplify how urban factors can amplify local rainfall patterns.

Elements of this proposed ban that require actual thought, since it's just... not as simple as the internet makes it out to be:
This is not the first time they have tried to ban TikTok. This is a recurring issue, and it comes back to China. I'm sure most of us have seen the absolutely cringeworthy congressional hearing snippets where the CEO, Chew, has to correct someone with "Senator, I am Singaporean."
A good portion of this is xenophobia. Getting that out of the way first. You know a bunch of the reps and senators are just really scared of The Scary Foreign Company.
The concern that most representatives have (it passed the House 352-65) is about TikTok gathering data on users and sharing it with the Chinese government, as Bytedance is under partial control of the Chinese government. It's complicated who owns what and to what degree, but the Chinese influence on TikTok is not zero.
The current iteration of the bill is not a blanket ban. It is conditional. TikTok will be banned if they do not separate from Bytedance.
TikTok shot itself in the foot a little bit: with the bill's introduction to the House, they pushed a notification to all adult users of the app in the US. They then provided a platform to input the zip code of the user and call the reps and senators, all within the app, rather than just sending them to the link I always use. This use of age and location data was seen as a possible example of the Chinese government gathering information on the userbase. Is age and location information that most apps have these days? Yes. Are the others owned by China? There's the issue.
Sale of Americans' personal data to China are already under scrutiny and have been for a while, along with Russia, Vietnam, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, and Venezuela. To my understanding, the law passed in that link affected all data brokers, including Americans.
A lot of people are, understandably, wary of accusations that China may be a malicious actor due to the American tendency to skew such things due to racism, xenophobia, and a distaste for communism. I myself had that reaction, but I know I have a tendency to do that, and tried to reframe and distance myself, in the manner of 'would I react the same if it was a different country where I had less concern over racism playing a role in the policy?' In that regard, I would like to remind everyone that China is one of Russia's closest allies (along with Belarus and India), and Russia is China's closest. China is also very dependent on Russia for oil power right now. If you believed, to any degree, that Russia had psyops on tumblr to manipulate the 2016 election, something that was later proven, then you should at least consider that China would do the same on an app that they technically own through Bytedance.
Honestly, I don't know how much of the reporting on the topic of China's government paying out the nose for US private data is legitimate and how much of it is just hearsay, rumor-mongering, and racist conspiracy theories... but I can't really ignore that the US and China are at odds, and 'China has it out for American citizens' holds water the way it does for 'Russia has it out for American citizens.' It's just... Cold War, part II stuff.
The questions we have to ask ourselves are about which actions in pursuit of 'avoid the malicious intentions of a foreign government we are not really at peace with' are reasonable precautions, which are racist/xenophobic and have a chance of negatively impacting innocent people (e.g. we don't want a repeat of McCarthyism), and which ones are both. The previous ban on data brokers selling to these other countries is both, in my view, because those data brokers shouldn't be selling at all. It's not really unreasonable to ban those sales to international entities, but it's also xenophobic to apply it only to foreign actors instead of domestic ones as well.
The approach to this that I think we could all benefit from is to ask the questions below. I will give the absolute most basic answers, but each answer is significantly longer and more complicated in reality.
Which freedoms or rights does a ban of this platform violate? Free speech, freedom of commerce.
Which freedoms or rights does a ban nominally pursue? A right to privacy, protection against a non-ally foreign state with possible malicious intent.
Who is intentionally impacted by a ban? The Chinese government, data brokers both domestically and internationally. In a positive manner, American citizens are impacted in the sense of their privacy being protected.
Who is unintentionally impacted by a ban? People who use TikTok to communicate in situations where they otherwise might not be able to. People who use TikTok to make a living as content creators. People who use TikTok as a platform to advertise their businesses. People who use TikTok for activism.
What complicating factors may be driving this proposed ban? Racism and xenophobia are skewing perspectives by those who are concerned about the PRC. Older legislators are concerned that the younger generation, the bulk of TikTok users, are too young or too addicted to the platform to make reasonable decisions.
What complicating factors may be driving the negative response to this proposed ban? A kneejerk suspicion of that racism and xenophobia by progressives, which may cause a dismissal of concerns with plausible legitimate basis. Concern that older legislators are enacting policies that they do not understand due to their lack of familiarity with the platform, or technology in general.
What other complicating factors are there with regards to this proposed ban? Why the hell is there no similar concern for Facebook, X, Google, or any other US-based company that does ridiculous amounts of data farming of citizens across the world? Regulate your own damn companies first, maybe? Seriously, where the fuck is this energy when it comes to Zuckerberg and Musk?
I cannot make your conclusion for you. I cannot pretend that the American government's concern over China is unfounded, nor can I pretend that racism, xenophobia, and anti-communist sentiment are wholly uninvolved in Congressional actions.
But I do think that understanding what Congress is actually doing is important. Knowledge is power, and hopefully I've given you a bit more today.
hey since it's coming up again: no it's not a good thing that the government wants to ban tiktok. no you should not be glad that the government might ban tiktok. no you should not respond to this with "good riddance" or "hurry up I hate that app". I should not have to explain this to you but the government banning a social media app is still a bad thing even if you don't like the UI or booktok or having to say "unalive" or how you think it's killing the very notion of attention spans. It's still bad. It's bad.

Hello there. I have a question, or rather a doubt, regarding long arms specifically. Are bolt-action rifles more powerful than, say, semi-automatic ones since they use the entirety of the energy to propel the bullet and send it downrange instead of redirecting the gasses to cycle the action and chamber the next round? And would it be useful or feasible at all to have a precision rifle that could work as a semiauto/straight-pull bolt-action by choosing its operation at will? Excellent work, BTW
If I just take the question, “are bolt action rifles more powerful than semi-auto rifles?” Not really, but that comes with a lot of caveats.
You do lose power from the gas tap. But, the power loss from a semi-auto rifle can be more than compensated for by mounting a slightly longer barrel. More than that, and this is really important to remember, it doesn't matter. If you take a high power rifle round fired from the next zip code over, it will not matter if it was coming from a bolt or a semi-auto, it will still wreck your day. When you're discussing the amount of power behind a bullet, you're really worried about how far you can throw a chunk of metal, it's not like the gun does less damage on impact.
Similarly, bolt-action rifles often have a reputation for being more accurate, and again, this is kind of true, but it's a little misleading. As with the power loss from bolt to semi, the accuracy loss on a precision semi-auto not particularly significant.
The central differences that results in larger discrepancies, is that, with all things being equal, bolt action rifles are lighter, and cheaper than semi-auto ones. (Technically, the, “cheaper,” benefit comes from them being mechanically simpler, which also results in a more reliable rifle, as there's less that can go wrong.) This means, you can mount a heavier barrel, which in turn can support higher pressure rounds. (Either, larger caliber, or just hotter variants of the same rounds.)
For example, the Barret M82 is a semi-auto .50 cal anti material rifle, it weighs about 30lbs. The Barret M95 is a bolt-action equivalent, and weighs slightly over 20lbs. And, when mounted with their standard 29” barrels, they have roughly the same effective range (slightly over a mile.)
While you're sitting here thinking about the relative accuracy and the value of a bolt action, remember that the record for longest range sniper kill set in 1967 using a scoped Browning M2 (at 2500yds) stood for over 35 years until it was unseated by someone using a Tac-50.
There's a real danger with firearms in thinking that the relative differences between gun designs are far more extreme than they actually are. In the Vietnam War, a sniper sitting on a machine gun, set a world record for their long range kill that stood until 2002. When we you're seeing someone saying, “x is more reliable than y,” or, “x is more accurate than y,” understand that these are usually incredibly minor differences.
Now, when you start talking, specifically, about sniper rifles, then you get into a situation where those tiny accuracy and power differences start to become more significant. When you're looking at sending a round more than a mile away, yes, an almost imperceptible difference in accuracy can become the difference between hitting or missing a human sized target. Of course, at those ranges, inclement weather, and the rotation of the Earth can throw off your aim, so there is a lot to consider, and there is a reason why the Tac-50, in spite of being a bolt action, is still a fifteen-thousand dollar gun.
As for your solution, those exist. Technically in two different forms, with very different intentions behind them.
What you're not talking about (nor explicitly interested in) are semi-automatic firearms designed with the ability to lock the bolt closed. The Makarov PB and some prototypes for the Mk23 SOCOM (which would eventually become the H&K USP) come to mind as immediate examples. Notably, these are both handguns, intended for clandestine use, and the reason the bolt can be locked closed, and then manually cycled by the user, is to reduce the noise made by the pistol when firing. (As a general rule, it's harder to suppress a handgun, than a rifle, because of the shorter barrel. You need to deal with more unburnt gas trying to escape), so locking the bolt, and preventing gas from venting out the action is one place you can cut the sound dramatically. I could swear there's a late Soviet era rifle with a similar design, but I can't remember what it is (and I'm relatively sure it's not one of the 9x39s. Though, I might be thinking of an AS Val or VSS Vintorez prototype variant that never made it into production.)
Hybrid-semi auto/bolt action rifles were experimented with in the first half of the 20thcentury. The only specific example I can point to off hand, is the SIG SK-46. This was a semi-automatic rifle, with a visible bolt. When the bolt was lowered, the rifle operated semi-automatically, while rotating the bolt up would lock the bolt... into the bolt... yeah, conventional firearms terminology stumbles a bit here, because most guns don't have two separate bolts. So, bare with me. Locking the bolts together would, engage a gas cutoff, and at that point the rifle would function as a straight-pull bolt-action rifle.
My understanding is that there were Italian and Swedish experiments with hybrid-semi/bolt action rifles, and I suspect there were other experiments with this idea, that are far more obscure.
I don't have any concrete explanation for why these rifles never saw widespread use, but I can guess. Remember that two of the major advantages for the Bolt-action rifles were their lower weight and mechanical simplicity. In the case of the SK-46, it's actually more complex than a contemporary semi-auto rifle. So, it amplifies the disadvantages of a semi-auto rifle of its day, without really replicating the benefits of a bolt-action. It's important to remember, there were less than 20 SK-46 prototypes made, so I'm looking at a video of Ian McCollum taking one apart, somewhat obviously, I've never even seen one in person. (And, judging by the content of the video, it sounds like this is one case where he doesn't have much background either.)
These hybrid rifles existed, but as far as I know, none really made it out of experimental testing. As I said earlier, I can guess why, but as far as I've ever seen, most of these experiments weren't particularly well documented publicly. This suggests, to me, that the experiments did not provide any meaningful value, and were quietly scrapped.
As a fun aside, if you're a sniper, you probably do not want a straight-pull bolt-action. The reason is, these have a bad habit of the bolt kicking into your face if you try to cycle it while maintaining a sight picture. You need to pull your head away from the rifle to cycle it, meaning you lose sight on the target. (Or, you can let the bolt bash your teeth in. That's technically an option as well.)
The short answer is that, first the differences aren't that extreme, and second the hybrid rifles did exist, but never made it out of prototypes.

have we seen allison kill anyone in this version of the timeline? she exploded some dude’s heads in the alternate timeline five saw back when he first hit the sixties, but has she killed anyone else?
actually.... there’s something interesting about how the umbrellas treat death. i don’t exactly know how to articulate it, but...
...you would think diego would have no compunction killing, and he’s definitely got the powers for it, but i’m pretty sure he just beat up and zip tied the bad guys when he was doing his vigilante thing. he has a certain code of honor to him, and only calls for someone’s death when they’ve gone and killed someone he cares about. it’s kind of the same with luther--he can hurt people very badly with his power but he seems to hold himself back a lot, and i can’t remember any significant kills he’s made.
umbrella ben, meanwhile, was taught to kill from a young age. he was used as a tool for extrajudicial execution, and he never liked it but he didn’t put up a huge fuss against it. the interesting thing is that sparrow ben has A LOT more control over his powers and is very much capable of NOT ripping people to shreds if he so chooses. i have no idea if it’s just how he grew up this time around or if there’s something else to it, but... i don’t think we’ve seen sparrow ben kill anyone yet as of ep 6, while umbrella ben (”the best of us”) has killed... a LOT.
five has easily killed the most people on screen aside from maybe vanya, but he always does it with a purpose, and it’s almost ALWAYS commission agents or board members. we did see some of his hits if i’m remembering right, but it was always about the puzzle for him, a means to an end. his powers aren’t offensive--they’re incredibly defensive, and he excels at using them as such.
viktor has bursts of emotion, times when his powers almost seem to control him more than he controls them. i think it was very telling that harlan did the same when he had those powers. viktor.... he kind of just... doesn’t kill, except when he does, and the only difference is that when he does he’s reached a point where he either can’t or won’t control his powers. it’s an incredibly emotionally based response.
klaus CAN fight but more often than not simply chooses not to. i think he might be the only one who has never even gotten close to killing someone (even in wartime, like... we never saw him with a confirmed kill even in the vietnam war)--and i can imagine why. it would SUCK to have the ghost of some guy you killed now following you around for the rest of your goddamn life. dude deals with enough death.
and then you get to allison, and... her power is easily the best suited to diplomacy, but she’s VERY good at using it offensively, even vindictively. i find her fascinating because i don’t think she’s a good person, but up until this season we saw her TRYING to be. it’s not her natural state to think of other people and their struggles, but she was sincerely trying, and she was doing pretty good at it. but she’s backsliding like hell right now and that means that her sense of compassion has gone out the window. she can’t see harlan’s personhood beyond her own pain and suffering--can’t see how lonely luther has been for most of his life, can’t force herself to care about any of her siblings except maybe viktor, and as of episode six, well... i don’t have high hopes for that one.
it makes me think. like, we saw diego at his worst, when he was trying to kill cha cha because of what she did to eudora. we saw klaus at his worst, after dave, when he was flip-flopping between getting high to numb the pain and sobering up just for a chance to summon him again. we saw luther in a bad spot after he learned that he’d gone to the moon and been utterly, utterly alone for four years for no good reason. and none of them.... none of them were vindictive like allison. viktor is the only one who might have a claim to that same sort of vindictiveness--the apocalypse suite has vibes like that. that... pleasure in letting his powers go and forcing his control over anyone in his path.
i just... i wonder how much allison’s power has shaped her. and i wonder how much of her shaped her power. like on the one hand... it’s no WONDER she is the way she is, with a power like that. but how much different could she have been if she didn’t have it? it’s a question for the ages.
