His mother throws the paper in front of him.

"What is this?"

Draco picks up the folded Prophet and glances at the pictures. Ah, they'd finally run the spread! He needed to remember to send a discreet gift to that photographer. "Funny, I would have through you'd be fairly familiar with the society pages." He sets the paper down and smiles at his mother across her tea table. She's set it out with enough reminders of the Malfoy Heritage that he's surprised it doesn't collapse from the weight of expectations. You can strip most of the wealth from a woman of privilege, he thinks, but never her sense that meddling in her child's life is a sacred duty. "I mean the girl. Explain the girl." Draco idly shrugs. "While I'm crushed to destroy your good opinion of me, I find that I am unable to explain women."

Narcissa Malfoy sets her cup down so vigorously that the tea sloshes over the side. "I want you to explain why you are pictured in the paper with that girl!" "And here I thought you'd be pleased to see me getting serious about a witch." He picks up a spoon and measures sugar into his cup. "Last time this subject came up you castigated me about how I wasn't doing my duty to the line and that I needed to get on producing an heir with all due haste. I simply took you at your word." He stirs and smiles at her. "She's...not appropriate." The delicate dodge makes Draco appreciate her tact. Narcissa Malfoy, with her ability to imply a great deal while saying nothing, will tell everyone who matters that her future daughter-in-law is most certainly a welcome addition without ever spelling out what that means. "Brightest witch of our age, and a war heroine?" He admires the photo of Hermione; the simple black dresses he's been pushing her to wear suit her, balance out that hair, and, as always, she's got his bracelet on her arm. He likes that she never takes it off!

have a few questions for u! i loved your latest chapter, i believe it’s my favourite one to date together with the yule ball special :)

01. since u’re writing a (very intense) re-write of book 1 to 7 canon, how happy/sad were you about draco’s arc in the books and films? it always bugged me that him and the slytherins didn’t get to shine that much in both aspects, and that’s why we never really got to appreciate them a lot when the books and films came out. would love to hear your take on this!

02. not sure if this has been asked before, but what thing/s inspired you to write lionheart? i recall reading it was because of your love for to all the young dudes, but i’d love to hear you talk about this more

03. if j* r****** weren’t as awful a person as she was (and so terribly closed minded too) do you think there would have been a way for draco and hermione to be together in canon, or at least be some level of friends, if not together romantically?

04. i’m a narcissa black-malfoy apologist and stan, and can i just say, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for writing her in such a beautiful and heartbreaking way. i cannot wait to see how you write her arc in books 5-7.

05. an absolute, absolute shot in the dark - but since friday’s last update was sort of a cliff hanger - would you be open to a double update or an earlier than usual update this week? we aren’t entitled to anything but i swear to you, i was biting my nails and at the edge of my seat fr the minute i ran to the friday update. draco and sirius’s conversation was too real and too beautiful i sobbed so much.

hello! thank you for all the questions, wow!! will probably answer some in separate posts because tumblr usually censors my craft glitches out when i write long asks BUT

how happy/sad were you about draco’s arc in the books and films?

[looks at 400,000 words of AU fic about draco's arc] oh yeah i feel normal and care a regular amount about it

Man, it makes me sad. It makes me sad that almost all the Death Eaters are also children of Death Eaters, establishing this as a familial cycle of violence and hatred, and that's just... left to sit there in the narrative, implicating.

Draco’s arc in particular is a flat downward descent from schoolyard bully into a fascist death cult, and it’s bleak as fuck. like, if these books are written from Draco’s POV, it is some gruesome and deeply cynical stuff, guaranteed. which is a shame, because I think “reluctant and begrudging reformed villain” is an amazing character type that he could have fulfilled perfectly. doesn’t even have to go on tour with the Golden Trio, either; because I lost hope for Redemption Arc after the end of book 6, my ideal world going into book 7 was just having Draco stuck in Grimmauld Place, being bitchy and ill-tempered about the Order’s witness-protection equivalent, while the others treat him like a house-elf. “oh, yeah, that’s Draco, he used to bully us but now he has to ask us to buy the tea he likes at the grocer’s,” etc. I mean, full redemption would have been great, and by far the most rewarding for him/me personally as a reader, but I kind of figured by the end of HBP that it wasn’t in the cards. JKR writes characters in a particular way when she’s interested in them as people, and Draco was just never written with that level of attention or care. 

he’s not even given a particularly rewarding antagonist arc. he doesn’t follow through and kill Dumbledore, thus giving him something irrevocable and life-scarring to repent for; but neither does he join the Order (e.g., Disappearance), meaning his ultimate contribution to the war effort is just this listless, choiceless trend of enabling. he’s forced into the plot with the Vanishing Cabinet, but can't kill Dumbledore; he tries to hide Harry’s identity from Bellatrix in Book 7, but it doesn’t work; he tries to catch Harry in the Room of Requirement and fails, then has to be saved by Harry from fiendfyre his own incompetent sidekick conjured. cringe failson. it’s also hilarious put in contrast with this fanon we have of hypercompetent draco — it’s like we all saw him and were like god bless can we please get this man a skillset. jesus christ he is getting killed out here.

but anyway tbh I think the most character development we see from him in all 7 novels is when Hermione slaps the shit out of him in POA (call that spell of Shutting the Fuck Up the way he doesn't even try to retaliate). The bathroom scene in book 6 is huge, because it’s the first time we get a modicum of sympathy for him, but that’s not followed up on — we just sort of leave him with “yeah, that’s tough.” we don’t even know why the Malfoys go back to Voldemort, because by all accounts, they seem miserable. Lucius seems miserable even before he hits his Flop Era in book 6-7, but he’s also broadly miserable all the time when we see him (likely bc we only see him when he’s plotting/scheming/exploding in rage when Harry manages to yet again Scooby Doo one of his plots, but who knows). I think the seventh book subtly implies the Malfoys are so close with Voldemort because of Bellatrix, and [spoilers incoming] I myself lean heavily on that thread in later sequences in Lionheart, but in the books it’s up to the reader as to how much the Malfoys really believe in the Dark Lord versus just comply with his orders from fear.

Sirius glared at James, trying very hard to keep his grin in check. "Shut up, Jamie."

James had no such reservations— he grinned like the kneazle who caught the rat, fingers slowly dragging up Sirius' left arm and left eyebrow ticking up in challenge.

"Make me."

Sirius sucked in a sharp breath, stomach swooping at the suggestive gleam in those chocolate brown eyes. James' grin widened, and Sirius decided he couldn't have his boyfriend getting any smugger than he already was.

He pounced, gripping both of James' wrists and tipping him backwards so he fell onto the bed with Sirius' weight on top of him, their legs tangling into the red blanket. James yelped, twisting his arms, but Sirius held tight, smirk pulling at his lips even as his guts squirmed at having James underneath him. He leaned down till his nose was brushing James', relishing in the deep red flush that saturated his bronze skin at the sudden closeness.

05. BIOGRAPHY

Born on a cold morning and named in the Black tradition of myth and stars, Andromeda's very first breaths resounded loudly through the walls of her ancestral home –eerily similar to those of her namesake, desperate and pained while bound to that infernal stone, and in a way, she was trapped too. The secondborn daughter to an heirless father, another disappointment, she should have been, yet she still somehow managed to win his favor. Cygnus Black was quickly enamoured by his newborn daughter's blue eyes and toothless smile. Having at least one loving parent out of two was already a victory.

Proper, spoiled, educated, entitled. Those were just some of the words Andromeda slowly but surely grew up to be. Mother always said she would expect only the best from her, Father always said she should always expect only the best from the world, and both gave the same answer when she asked why. Because you are a Black. But, if she had to be honest, 6 year old Andromeda didn't truly understand what her name had to do with anything.

She learned, though, in the following years. Along with her sisters, she learned what it meant to be a daughter of her house. What it meant to bear the name Black and what was expected of her by her noble, ancient, and, most importantly, pure lineage. And even if she wasn't as strong, as skilled, or as beautiful, she was enough. She was a Black.

When time came she arrived to Hogwarts, fully aware of her worth, both giving and expecting only the best, just as she had been told she should. And though there was little of the respect and reverence she was told she deserved only by virtue of her name –most Slytherins sure did stare in awe at yet another member of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black, but there were three other houses that turn their eyes and sneer at her and her housemates–, she still kept her head high with the pride her father had ingrained in her mind and did her best to pay them no mind.

Still, one can only ignore the whispers behind one's back for so long. Mother always said that, while a lady did her best while in silence, she should never stop listening. Andromeda kept that in mind when she started paying attention to the words people said about her and her family when they though she was not around. It did hurt, everything they said and the words they used to describe her kin. But it was the fact that, after hearing past the not so hidden insults, Andromeda was starting to find truth in their words, ended up hurting more.

Standing behind one's ideals required courage, Andromeda found out when she finally made her mind that all she had been taught about worthiness and purity could not be true. But she had never been particularly brave, maybe that was why she too sported the green and silver of her sisters and parents rather than the red and gold of her little cousin. So, yet again, she kept silent. She gripped her cup tighter during family reunions when aunt Walburga spewed out her bigotry, bit her cheek when Mother reminded her of her duty to marry a respectable pureblood man, lowered her head when Father declared their superiority over others. No, Andromeda had never been the brave kind.

School ended and the next she was expected to do was to follow in her mother's footsteps. Marry a proper pureblood husband, be a proper pureblood wife, and have proper pureblood children. It was just what was done, and Andromeda had her first surge of courage when she defied it. Ambition was a big part of who she was, and she had the ambition to do more. It wasn’t easy, but she convinced her parents to allow her to become a healer, all on the condition that once her training was done she would accept aarranged betrothal. Andromeda knew a compromise was better than nothing, so she said yes.

Life, however, seldom cares for the plans one makes, and not long after she initially started her training she became reacquainted with someone she had thought she had left in the past. Ted walked into her life again and there was nothing she could do to ignore him or walk away.

Love is a woman's downfall, Mother used to say, and though Andromeda didn't like it, it seemed she had been right. It was love that put her in an impossible position; bound to the stone of the only life she had ever known by the chains of her love to her family, and desperately struggling to free herself despite the pain and fear that came with it. Andromeda was no hero, she was not brave, but the life growing inside her demanded for her to be. This time, Andromeda didn't wait for Perseus to free her. She pulled on her chains and left the stone, broken and hurting, and ran to him.

Born upon a cold december morning, Andromeda came to the world as a second daughter to Cygnus and Druella Black.A perfect child for House Black, or at least she would have been, had her birth not signified yet another disappointment due to her gender. Cygnus, however, was quickly won over by his daughter’s toothless smile and bright eyes; and Druella too, well, at least at first. No matter, her bond with her father stayed, and it translated perfectly into the child Andromeda grew up to be. Spoiled as any daughter of House Black and tremendously entitled due to years of her father’s coddling; proper and educated as any girl of her lineage should be, though never as poised as her mother would have preferred.

Growing up surrounded by who she did, it was no wonder what kind of ideals young Andromeda held. She was taught she was better, more deserving, purer than others. It was with this mindset that she arrived at Hogwarts. Eleven years old and with the proudest smile on her face she was sorted into slytherin. Not long passed, though, before Andromeda started to see how things really were. Children from other houses didn’t really want to be with her, and it was almost as if the older students prevented the few stray first years that got near to her from being her friends. And for a while, she tried her best at doing as she was told. 

She stuck to her sister and her housemates. All while silently watching the rest. She saw them and suddenly she didn’t think they were as low as her family said. Sure, they might not be as good as her, but that didn’t make them entirely bad. So she pushed her prejudices as far back in her mind as she could and decided she no longer wished to be so alone.It didn’t sit entirely well with her family, rather than praise she started getting scolding letters from her father, and her mother was ever more distant. Still, she managed to keep her chin up and her reputation clear, she was just perhaps a misguided girl, but a pure, and noble, and refined one; she just needed a little push back to the right path. That was what her parents’ friends assured them anyways. The truth was that she was starting to feel more estranged from her family by the day. She loved them without measure, yes, but their ideals and teachings felt wrong in her stomach.

Time passed and even if she still felt like an outsider in both worlds, her ambition to be better was greater than any other feeling. She was a teenager when she made up her mind about what was right, and even if she could only state in her own mind, she knew her family was not. 

When love finally arrived in the form of  everything her parents would despise, well, that was maybe the last push she needed. The relationship stayed secret, nobody could know, lest she wished to see Ted in danger, but once it began, all stolen moments and heavy kisses, Andromeda could no longer ignore the fact that she had to choose. Hard as the choice was, she managed to postpone making it until a month after graduating Hogwarts, when she noticed a growing bump in her stomach. 

Andromeda didn’t desert her family in hiding, she didn’t climb out a window in the middle of the night, nor was she stolen from the gardens. No, Andromeda left her home right through the front door, after giving her father a kiss in the cheek and telling her mother she’d be back in a few hours. With an extension charm on her handbag to take with her a good part of her clothes and many things of both emotional and economical value, she headed to Gringotts and, in her last act as a daughter of House Black, she accessed her family’s vault to take a good amount of money with her into her new life.

Well into her pregnancy, she finally married the man she loved. They bought a house with the money she had taken from her family and received a beautiful daughter into their arms  (even then, all ties broken with her family, Andromeda could not help but name her daughter in Black tradition of stars and myths). She also started her formal training as a healer, a dream she had not forgotten since childhood.

Now, almost ten years since she left, the skies finally started to clear, He Who Must Not Be Named disappeared, so maybe now she could start to live without fear.

You know what, Donna doesn't get enough love, so here is a headcannon about if Reader were to date Donna, because I'm gay and her h a n d s a r e h o t, asks are open if anyone has headcannon ideas

You would have to get used to all the dolls, and as much as you hate them, you never say anything to avoid hurting her feelings. Donna also tries to ensure there are rooms for you (including your shared bedroom) that is doll free.

Although you never express your dislike to them, she still knows.

Whenever she's in her little study or just sitting reading or doing work, you always like to crawl into her lap, and she always loves when you do it, she loves keeping you close

Although she's more quiet and laid back, you both still find things to do together, even if it's just reading in quiet.

You also started to try and help her through everything she was going through, and she always feared that you were going to leave her.

You do try to do fun things with her to keep her cheered up, you'll dance around the house with her, trying to be silly. She does laugh, she doesn't join in as much as you do, but you know she's still having fun.

When she isn't feeling well, feeling down, she likes to rest her head on your chest, keeping you in a hug as she talks to you about everything on her mind.

You're the person she trusts the most, and she becomes very protective of you.

You both start warming up to each others interests, and every time you ask her about her dolls or her about her pollen that causes hallucinations, her eyes always light up, it's always adorable!

It was the darkest day of the year when Bellatrix was born, quite literally and figuratively. December 21st, 1951. Cygnus and Druella weren’t entirely sure what to expect, being first time parents and raised in households that didn’t discuss much, but it was still shocking when the first daughter came out, screamed and then silenced herself within a five minute period. That’s how it started and the parents simply assumed that the child would be a meek, quiet thing that would need raising with a strong hand to ensure that she wouldn’t back down when the time came to be a strong figure in pureblood society. That strong hand never came. Growing up, Bellatrix was raised by various nannies who never bothered to tell her their name and she never bothered to ask. Bella stayed quiet, just not quite in the way that either parent was expecting. She never interacted with children her own age and always seemed to seek out older children or adults who would assist her in getting what she wanted. She was always able to find the most important person in the room and make them her best friend. It was easy for Cygnus and Druella to say she was an easy child because she somehow came preprogrammed with the socialite rulebook. Much didn’t change when the first younger sister came along, other than some tensions running high with the second girl. Everyone, including Bellatrix assumed she would be the only girl, so when the second one came screaming in, the room seemed to stay silent. She accepted the little sister with open arms, teaching her everything she knew like who were the best elves to ask for things when their parents weren’t around to snap at them and which nannies wouldn’t check on you if you didn’t sleep for your nap. And that’s how Bellatrix operated all the way up to Narcissa’s birth. This is exactly what you have to do to make your life even easier. Narcissa shocked the family. 3/3 in girls and the eldest knew there was officially a problem now. At the crisp age of 7, even Bella understood that this was officially their life now and she was going to have to act a certain way. She started attending parties with her mother and didn’t leave her side. She’d stayed silent and smile, making nice with those who noticed her and stayed invisible to those who didn’t. She read every magical book her father could hand her to ensure that she would not only be ahead by the time she walked through the doors but she would be on top. She practiced spells with old wands from family members who have since passed to get the motions perfectly. If she was going to be the heir, she was going to do it well and she was going to be remembered for being the best. Her Hogwarts years came in and went in a flash, graduating top of the class and bettering her social circle and exactly how she ran it from the day she walked out. Bellatrix refused to be remembered as the one Black daughter who was handed everything. She was the Black daughter that ran everything. She took the mark only days after her graduation and there isn’t an answer to whether she took it because she believed in the cause or if her parents thought she should get it. She just got the mark, and put herself next to the most important person in the room- The Dark Lord. Bellatrix would like to think that Andromeda’s leaving affected her, but honestly, it didn’t and she probably should have seen it from a mile away. Andi was the first disappointment to come in a string of let downs for a family that had only seen good days, of course things were put on her that Bella could not and would not ever imagine. That being said, she feels no real sympathy for the middle child. It only proves that pressure placed on children is to prove who is worthy of what’s to come and who isn’t. Years come and go, rumors fly that Bellatrix is the right hand woman to the Dark Lord and she just lets it ride. She puts her free time into pouring her family’s money into different causes that make it seem like she is nothing more than a rich philanthropist who has nothing better to do, flashing her mark and dark eyes to those to consider turning her money and presence away.

Andromeda has spent more time in her childhood home over the course of the past week than she has in months. Evidently, the Black family assembles in times of crisis. Or, Andromeda is more easily guilted in times of crisis. She doesn’t have it in her to argue or make up an excuse not to show up when she’s fresh off of a press conference, armpits vaguely sticky from the attention and a sour taste in her mouth given the latest Regulus development. As little as she knows about the Order of the Phoenix, she wonders if her youngest cousin is alive at all. The skeptic in her questions herself and Lucius’ joint announcement even in the hours that follow, as the taxi pulls up to her parents’ front gate and while she jiggles her key in the front door.

In truth, the last thing Andromeda wants to do is field questions about the conference or, (more likely than not) criticisms. It’s why she’s shown up later than she promised - so she can sneak up the stairs to her old bedroom and capture at least a few moments of peace and quiet while everyone else is eating dinner. The dining room is conveniently across the house from the front door and whatever help her mother has hired is occupied in the kitchen, meaning that she can easily escape notice before she decides to make a proper entrance. By then, her mother will be drowsy and her father will escape to the back porch with a cigar and a work call, and the conversation will successfully have dulled. 

It’s almost as though Andromeda has this down to a science. 

What she doesn’t account for is for Narcissa’s childhood bedroom door to be cracked open, a sliver of light playing across the hardwood of the hallway. She can hear the distant clink of her mother’s sterling silver flatware floating up the steps. Curiosity leaves her lingering briefly at the head of the staircase before she crosses to rap her knuckles softly against the door. “Cissa?” she questions, then allows the door to nudge open enough for her to cross the threshold. “You in here?”

Narcissa, a mais nova das irmãs Black, a “princesinha da mamãe”, a mais bela de suas irmãs, mas a mais perdida. Tudo o que qualquer jovem de quinze anos tem, ela possui: Jóias, vestidos, rapazes querendo desposa-la. A vida perfeita para a alta sociedade, menos para Narcissa.  Desde a sua infância Narcissa foi feita para obedecer, nunca permitiu desafiar. Não era como Bellatrix, que elegeu o mal como o seu exemplo a seguir, nem como Andrômeda, que se mantinha alheia a todas aquelas coisas; Era a imagem e semelhança do que sua mãe queria: uma bela dama, educada, amante da pureza e pronta para continuar com a linhagem pura. Ela  nunca saberá se nasceu com essa ideia ou se foi implantada, se em algum momento  pensou: eu quero ser outra pessoa. Ao contrário de suas irmãs, ela não decidiu quem ela é, parece que ela nasceu com fios de marionete, como uma boneca controlada por sua mãe. Seu cérebro impregnado com suas idéias, seus valores e a pequena Cissy não fez nada além de seguir o exemplo de sua progenitora, era a coisa certa e ela nunca iria querer desapontá-la. A menina costumava ser o que sua família exigia dela, ela deveria ser, não havia como fracassar depois de anos e anos de aprendizado. Narcissa nunca questionou nada, embora milhares de perguntas lhe atravessassem a mente, permanecia em  silêncio, suas opiniões permaneciam com as de Druella. Essa era Narcissa, a filha perfeita, que percorreu o caminho predeterminado. Claro, isso não significava que Narcisa realmente pensava como seus pais; Embora no começo fosse assim, com o passar dos anos a loira conseguiu criar seus próprios pontos de vista, não queria machucar, não era fascinada pela violência. Enquanto ela se sentia superior ao resto e orgulhosa de ser uma purista, sua parte humana ainda estava lá, bombeando seu coração, lembrando-a de que todos ali eram pessoas assim como ela. Infelizmente não há outro caminho, quando  presencia uma desgraça, ela olha para outro lado, por que mesmo não tendo sido ensinado, a jovem sentia compaixão. Eles merecem , isso é repetido por ela dia após dia, todos eles merecem o que estão sofrendo. E como negar isso? Narcissa fazia parte dos Black e uma Black deveria pensar assim.

Chamar atenção não era difícil para a mais nova dos Black, o seu próprio nome  fazia isso. E isso se devia ao fato de que Narcisa parecia misteriosa, de grande beleza e poder, mas ela pouco prestava atenção  as demais pessoas, muito focada em ter boas notas porque sua mãe a considera sua menina de ouro. Seu excelente desempenho acadêmico lhe valeu a posição de monitora em seu quinto ano, o que proporcionou várias vantagens. Narcissa gostava de ter controle sobre os outros, às vezes sendo injusta pelo simples fato de querer puni-los. Alguns se atreviam a questiona-la, mas Narcisa se recusava a conversar com aqueles que não faziam parte de seu seleto círculo social. Sua atitude lhe causou inimizade com a professora McGonagall, que constantemente lhe dizia que nem tudo na vida era ser um rosto bonito e vir de uma família de renome. Narcissa, obviamente, ignorava seus comentários. Por outro lado, o professor Slughorn não poupava elogios, atraído pelo sobrenome da menina, desta forma ele sempre teve um bom relacionamento com Narcissa, fazendo dela um membro de seu clube exclusivo. Narcissa costumava se dar bem com os Sonserinos, não costumava se dar com todos  os Grifinórios, achava os Lufanos insuportáveis, e os Corvinais eram muito estranhos para ela. Ela lutava consigo mesma para não manchar  o nome de sua família, evitar problemas e procurar um puro sangue prometido. Até hoje ela  não quer que sua mãe a imponha alguém, como fez com Bellatrix e Andrômeda. Ela ainda acredita no amor e que ela pode encontrá-lo algum dia.

CIssy, como suas irmãs a chamam, é uma garota refinada e elegante, mostra isso em seus gestos e maneira de andar. Muitas pessoas se ressentem de sua atitude, que é andar pelos corredores como uma rainha, que age de maneira presunçosa. Outros acreditam que não é tão bonita quanto todos dizem. Ela claramente tem muitas pessoas contra ela em Hogwarts, mais do que ela tem a seu favor.  No entanto tem um bom coração que ela luta para  esconder. A família Black não tem piedade de ninguém, então ela não deveria sentir isso; É uma emoção inútil, de acordo com seus pais, uma fraqueza. É difícil ser como sua família quer, cruel e implacável, mas faz o melhor que pode; Até mesmo já é natural nela, talvez estivesse em seus genes. Ela nunca se mostra ao mundo quando está em um momento ruim, seja este onde ela chora ou demonstra seus sentimentos, não é um comportamento apropriado para uma Black, a sonserina fará qualquer coisa por aqueles que ama, está disposta a proteger sua família a todo custo, mesmo que isso signifique assassinato, algo que ela nunca fez. Ela viu sua irmã mais velha torturar alguém, como se não fosse nada; custaria a ela tirar uma vida, mais se fosse necessário, ela o faria sem hesitação. Não há hesitação quando se trata de seus entes queridos.  Às vezes, ela suspeita que vai ficar louca porque é incapaz de se sentir livre, porque está nesse ambiente sufocante. Ela teme desapontar seus pais, teme que ela não seja a que eles esperam, e teme o desapontamento de si mesma. Ela quer ser  forte. É seu dever levantar-se todos os dias e seguir um plano que ela nunca escolheu, regras escritas antes de seu nascimento. Ela é uma obra de arte perfeita, escondida dos olhos que poderiam admira-la realmente.
