Helloo! I have an oc who is a system (if that’s how u say it..) and I wana represent correctly! I’m not one so I wana know how to represent and what to avoid

My biggest piece of advice is to remember to flesh out each alter as a person (and research... a lot of research!) As well as try not to use it soly for plot reasons. If you're only writing it in for the plot and don't plan for actual rep then don't wrote it but if you do plan for rep (which it seems you do) research and then write away (I also recommend sensitivity readers as a double checking process to make sure you don't make any obvious/avoidable mistakes. Being a system with BPD is such a trip cause wdym I have a favorite person? Who is that? Why do I hate everyone else they speak to? Why do the other alters get so obsessed with them? Why am I angry? Am I angry? When did I start liking all the things this other person likes? Who's emotions are these? Do I dislike my body due to the DID or is my BPD acting extra weird today? Wait now I'm crying? When did I go to my room? What day is it? What time is it? Who am I? Why am I dressed like this? Who is screaming? Where did this headache come from?

BUT the idea that their perfect, amazing, totally not traumatized (thanks bio father) child could ever be disabled, neurodivergent, mentally ill, etc. NO WAY IN HELL! HOW DARE YOU EVEN THINK THAT! This but especially with roles bc how does one explain that we have someone who's role is to watch social interactions and think them over in order to decide how we need to react (and to keep us from being impulsive)? We couldn't find a word so we made one (Deocder) nobody knows what it is till we explain but *it works*! That's what matters!

i highly encourage plurals to just make up their own words for things. we didnt like how binary(?) the "fully formed alter vs fragment" thing felt, so we just borrowed terms from a game we like to explain 4 levels of alter elaboration. you dont have to use commonly known terms. if you dont like them you can make shit up. its just words your using to describe yourself.

When I (the host) casually come back to front thinking it's been maybe a few hours... it's been 3+ days, we cut our hair, we have like 2 or more new alters, and someone went dormant... WHAT IN THE DISASSOCIATED HECKING HECK HAPPENED?!

Sometimes you will fall asleep playing and wake up not playing or vise versa this is another form of switching (it's when you switch without realizing till after the fact/switch while the body is sleeping)

Here’s my metaphor for systemhood that I tell my singlet friends.

Imagine you’re playing a first person video game. You have the controller, you control your character. It’s a normal first person game. You are an alter, the character is the body. This is fronting.

Other people live with you. Sometimes, they come into the room and sit and watch while you play. They sometimes try to guide you, give you advice on what to do next. They don’t always agree, and they can argue with each other. Other times they scream at you that you’re doing everything wrong and you suck at this game. This is co-consciousness.

Imagine how distracting it would be for people around you to tell you what to do, or to scream at each other or at you, even if they have good intentions. It wouldn’t be easy to focus on your game, would it?

Then sometimes, something happens in the game that prompts you to hand off the controller to someone else so they can play and you get a break. This is (some types of) switching. This can be good.

Other times, someone rips the controller out of your hand or fights you for it. This is (other types of) switching. And sometimes, six other players hook up their controllers, but there’s only one character to play as. So all of you have your controllers, but you’re all trying to play the same character. This is cofronting.

Imagine how difficult that would be. Imagine how hard it would be to try and play a game while someone is trying to take the controller from you, or while six other people are trying to play too.

There are also times that nobody is playing, or you can’t decide who should play. What’s happening to the character in the game? What are they doing if no one is playing? This is dissociation. The character is doing nothing. They’re stuck.

This is the best metaphor I have come up with for being a system. It’s something a lot of people get because they’ve played games before.
