Second Life Live Entertainment Addict
20 posts
I have been in Second Life for over 9 years. In that time I have come across some incredibly talented live singers. I thought it was about time to share the joy, with others who are interested in Live Entertainment. This blog will introduce you to some of these great entertainers, as well as introduce you to some of the best venues to see them. I will also touch on some of the incredible Tribute Concert productions and a few of the best DJs in Second Life.  I don't profess to be a critic, or an expert. This is just a place to share talent we both enjoy following and bring you photos and information about shows and upcoming events. Contributors Chiera Slavicz (SL) and Stellar54 (SL)

Tribute Avatars
We often have fun creating avatars that look like famous people.... It’s not expensive if you are a collector of freebies, which can be found across Second Life at stores and various expos and fashion events.
Keep your eyes our for unique clothing and special additions for your avatar, like Cher hair, or platform shoes, or a purple cape..... Use your imagination and have fun with it. There is nothing that says you have to be the same all the time.  Here are some examples from our collection.

Tipping Artists in Second Life
Tumblr media
An example of the staging for a tribute show
Tips are a touchy subject, I know... but here goes....
My partner and I have, twice, been verbally attacked about tipping (For the record we always tip; just not as soon as we enter a venue)....... First incident was a DJ who wanted us to tip more if we wanted him to play requests.... The second was a "tribute" act who threatened to eject and ban us from the venue and all future shows for "not tipping".... This was before half time in the show....
Now there are many tribute acts and concerts in SL... and they do an amazing job of creating atmosphere and experience of a live concert..... There are others who dress up and basically stand on stage while they leave a recording of a live show to play on the stream...
I acknowledge that it takes a fair bit of hard work to create an avatar that resembles the artist you are paying tribute to. It also costs to create staging, lighting and also bring in others to play band members. Animations, too, are not free and neither are the instruments. It is an expensive exercise, but usually one that is part of the fun for those who love the idea of playing someone famous.
Some production companies go to tremendous expense to provide an authentic experience for concert goers.
Tumblr media
Tribute artist ACDC - Guess who?
Venue owners pay big bucks for artists to perform, and the majority of live singers, tribute artists and DJs etc work hard for their tips..... Still others actually perform for the sheer joy of it... and encourage you to tip the venue....
Tipping, by nature is a way of showing appreciation to the performer, host and venue for entertaining you.. It is not mandatory.  When I put this question to a Second Life Facebook group a resounding majority were horrified at the behaviour of both the DJ and tribute artist. The overwhelming majority agree that tipping in Second Life is something that people do to show appreciation and if they were told they had to tip someone, or if the artist demanded a tip, they would leave and/or report to the venue owner.
Venue owners unanimously said they would find this behaviour unacceptable and would not be inviting the DJ or performer back to their venue.
My thoughts...... I tip to show appreciation... not because I am forced to.....
TIPS FOR TIPPING
Tipping is not mandatory
Artists and hosts often put suggestions in their tip jars, but you don’t have to tip that amount.
Whatever you can afford is happily accepted. You will not insult the majority of performers with a small donation.
Most people tip from $L25 to $L100, and some tip up to $L1000 for artists or DJs who they feel have truly entertained them
Tipping the venue does help keep the music alive, but venue owners would rather have happy vips who enjoy coming to their club
Hosts do work hard, sending out notices, monitoring comings and goings of patrons, and managing group invites, questions and assisting with dances and other housekeeping duties.
You should never be made feel guilty for not tipping.
Tumblr media
Stevie Ray Vaughn tribute artist.
NOTE: ( I will not name the performer or the venue.... that would be unfair on the venue owner.. who was very embarrassed at the behaviour of this particular act.)
Your thoughts???

More Second Life Live Music Venues
Many clubs and venues in Second Life invite talented musicians and singers to perform, and you can almost be guaranteed to discover some talented artists at any time of day or night.
Because SL is accessed from across the world you can find performers from a surprising variety of countries. I have featured artists from Portugal, Brasil, Wales, Australia and the Phillipines, as well as many from USA and Canada.
No matter what your taste in music, you will find something to excite your interest. Some musicians have successful careers outside of the virtual world, and still perform in SL for the sheer joy of sharing their talents.
Amateur artists also have the opportunity to perform in front of an encouraging and enthusiastic audience, and develop a following.
One SL performer, Carmel Daines (Amelia Blake in the ‘real’ world) honed her skills in SL before launching her band and solo career. Her band Airheart, were nominated for a Grammy in 2016.
Here are a few venues that either specialize in Live Music, or regularly have live singers perform. This is not a comprehensive list, but it is a good start to begin your search for your favourite singers and musicians.
Cafe Musique
Café Musique – Music for music lovers by music lovers! They have been helping new artists in SL since Feb 2015, at no cost to them.  Established artists & our passionate staff work together for tips only. Solar Winds
Solar winds is a welcoming venue specializing in high quality live talent. Your Place in Space is the theme. It is set in a futuristic space themed sim that is tastefully decorated in seasonal decor.
Patrons are enthusiastic and appreciate the high quality this venue seeks out for them.
The venue is very popular and audiences often exceed 40 people, which can cause some lag; especially if you have an older computer or slow internet. Our advice is to choose a low lag outfit, come early, to ensure you can fully load everything and leave off your unnecessary huds and scripted items. It will be work it.
Artists include Savannah Coronet, Erik Kotzzen, and many more.

Venues For Live Music
The best part of attending live performances in Second Life is you always get a front row view. The concerts are free, but it is customary for audience members to show their gratitude by tipping performers in the currency of Second Life (Lindens)... It is also good to support these venues in the every day cost of running the sim and paying the performers. The other good thing is that there are no parking problems, you can be in your PJs in front of your computer while your avatar dresses up and does all the dancing. When the show is over, you simply teleport back to your home, or to another venue. We often go to 4 shows an evening between 6PM and 11PM (second life time - Pacific US)
Solar Winds
This venue delivers top quality live performers every day. Prime time artists are well worth making the effort to get to hear.  Tonight we were treated to an incredible dual stream performance from Gabriel DeSilva and Erik Kottzen. The did a full hour of acoustic covers and wowed the large audience.
Erik is a Vocal Coach, Songwriter, Guitarist, Drummer, Bassist Bringing to Second Life his vast experience, Erik's shows are in English and described as beautiful, groovy, retro to modern, heart touching and rocking featuring pop, rock, hard rock, metal, 80's, 90's, Today, covering bands from Motorhead, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Five Finger Death Punch, Guns'N'Roses, Journey, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Queen to Originals and more.
Gabriel on his own is a talented guitarist and singer. His shows are high energy and he loves taking requests from his extensive song list.
The show today did not disappoint.

Together on stage...
Twilight Under the Moon
Another great venue for both live performers and tribute concerts. Always delivering high quality performers in a sim with little lag despite the popularity of its headline acts.
Tonight we went to hear Kjjeff Kohn, a live singer streaming from Texas US... He has a repertoire of over 2000 songs and never fails to deliver heartfelt blues, smooth country and even a little crooning in occasions. Another artist to seek out and hear.
As an added bonus, Twilight Under the Moon also presents a tribute concert from Lightening Productions. The featured artist was Bruno Mars. As usual, they brought the audience an excellent collection of live performances from the artist, great staging and lights, and the avatar performers went into detail in creating their tribute character.
Tonight Jeff Kohn streamed his performance live

Time to Party...
New Year’s Eve pre-parties - dancing in SL
It’s time to drag out the ball gowns and flat shoes that fit in your handbags. It’s New Year party time.
Over the holidays, Stellar and I have been busy follow artists, and checking out venues across Second Life grid. The entertainment has been incredibly diverse.
Here’s a few examples of the Christmas and New Year parties and performances we have enjoyed.
By the way, there’s no need to feel lonely, or out of place at this time of year. Even the ballrooms cater for singles dancers, and there are a number of dance groups you can join that go from venue to venue, sharing their dance huds with patrons. Don’t be afraid of asking someone how to join. Dance leaders spend a lot of time, energy and lindens on making sure they have the bests dances that fit all the genres of music available on Second Life.
Dancing in SL is a lot of fun. Talented dance leaders will immerse you into the club experience, be it rock and roll, house, swing, ballroom, or rock; there are dances to match.
If you are too shy to ask, venues often provide dance pads that contain different set dances suitable for the style of venue. You “sit” on a dance pad you will receive an invitation to animate your avatar. it is completely safe to accept. You will soon be dancing. Some venues also have a ‘master’ dance leader pad, so one person can operate the animations to fit with the music.
If a dance leader from a group has their hud open to other dancers, you can simply IM them and ask for an invitation.
REMEMBER: For the dance hud to work properly, you need to stand from any other animators (such as a dance pad) and turn you AO (animation override) off, as the presence of two animations is confusing and frustrating at times.  If you are having problems, I am sure a dance leader will help you.
Couples dancing is popular in Second Life. Any venue that has music and a dance floor will have installed a ‘dance machine’ for couples. They come in many shapes and forms from disco balls, to hearts and custom shapes. You simply click on the item and wait for the pose balls to arrive where you are. Pink for girls and blue for boys. Once you ‘sit’ on the pose ball, you will often be asked for permission to animate your avatar. It is safe to accept this invitation. You can click again on the dance machine to change the dances to match the music.
Explore different clubs, and enjoy the experience of dancing like you have endless energy. It is a great opportunity to meet new avatars as well.
Venues for Dancing
Tumblr media
Franks Elite is an exclusive, low lag, venue that is part of the Franks Jazz group of clubs. (Franks, Bogart’s and Elite). The dances are for couples mostly, but they do provide singles dances.
Tumblr media
The Cellar is a traditional jazz club. Small and intimate, but frequented by some fun people who make the experience exciting and authentic. They have themed nights such as jazz appreciation, swing, USO theme and a sock hop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Runaround Sues is the second longest running venue in Second Life. It specializes in music up to 1975. DJs faithfully play oldies almost 24 hrs a day. There is always someone to dance with and get to know. They have dance pads on the floor in front of the stage, so you can dance at any time. Occasionally dance groups go to shows and you can join in the fun.
Tumblr media
Rockin’ Robins@PurelifeLodge is a venue that presents a wide variety of music genres. They often have themed parties - like this one that was a salute to animals. Guests can dress to the theme, or just come as you are. There are dance pads and the Everybody Dance group are often there to lead the dancers. The venue also has some awesome live singers.
Tumblr media
The Savoy Ballroom is a fun venue to visit. They have couples and singles dance machines available, and the venue owner has avatars available 24hrs, if you want to experience couples dancing, but don’t have a partner. You simply ‘sit’ on the available dance ball and you can then select the dances of your choice. The venue also has a dance school that will teach you how to dance in Second Life.
Enjoy the New Year celebrations. Get out there and dance!!!

Grand Opening of The Ritz SL
Part of the group of New York Sims owned by Xtern01
Tumblr media
In a spectacular and memorable event, DJ AYKO AYA entertained a sizable group of guests at the Grand Opening of the The Ritz Ballroom in Second Life.  Part of a group of New York themed venues owned by Xtern01, this spectacular build was tastefully decorated for the season.  The ballroom is large enough to accommodate dancers. The stage, positioned under the sweeping staircase was the perfect showcase for The Band (including Donald Duck Dunne and other featured musicians on stage). Set to midnight, the room glowed in a soft silver light.  The dance animations are contemporary and romantic. High quality dances to suit any style of music.  This venue would be the perfect place to come to hear live singers, or to dance to themed music from the heyday of The Ritz, NY.  With the selections of romantic themed dances, it would also be a romantic setting to bring that special person for an evening of dancing. The atmosphere was electric, giving guests the experience of a ballroom from years gone by.  An excellent experience, and highly recommended for couples and singles who enjoy an upbeat, but romantic night out.

Setting a romantic mood, guests can select more intimate dances.
We will be looking forward to future events from this group of venues. having visited and attended other events from Xtern01′s NY venues, I would highly recommend a visit. Other venues play a wide selection of music, and the themed events are fun. VIPs are there to have fun, and it is reflected in the upbeat and vibrant feel of the clubs.

Examples of Some Fun Avatars
There are few limits as to what you can create in Second Life
Here are a few examples of assorted avatars available on Second Life Market Place
There are a number of characters from children’s films. Princesses, cartoon characters etc
If the theme is “food”, why not come as a utensil?
Tumblr media
You could also be a Viking Chimp, with a little imagination.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tiny and micro avatar fairies are popular.
Tumblr media
Why not be annoying and come as a fly?
Tumblr media
This avatar is always popular. She is complete with clothes, and always gets a laugh
Tumblr media
If someone says they are hungry, why not change into a slice of pizza?
Tumblr media
There are full range of Pokemon avatars, for those wanting to have some unique fun.
Tumblr media
Were you into ponies as a child? Why not become one?
Tumblr media
Here is an example of a “tiny” avatar. Many to choose from, and they also have a wide variety of clothes to choose from.

Dare To Be Different!
Non Human Avatars and Communities in Second Life
Again, the attraction for some who belong to virtual communities like Second Life is the ability to create an avatar that is young, attractive and agile. you can create the perfect image for yourself; and with the advent of mesh avatars, they are becoming more and more lifelike.
Some choose to be fashion icons, while others prefer a more mature look. In my observation, male avatars are far more likely to be comfortable with grey hair and a beard, while females are happy to ditch the greys and imperfections of RL to try life as a blond, red head or brunette... The are options for rainbow colours as well.
Why limit yourself to just the human form, when there are endless opportunities to explore different forms. There are a number of communities for people who choose to express themselves as furries, or as a tiny animal avatar (complete with a unique lifestyle and an obsession with waffles).  Complete avatars are available on Second life Market Place, where you can explore everything from extremely accurate animal avatars, demons, vampires, werewolves, cartoon characters, Japanese characters and fantasy figures like elves and fairies.  Child avatars are also available, but I have not explored the world of family role play.
When you first join Second Life, you will be given an opportunity to choose the form of your first avatar. Linden Labs provide a library of helpful things to begin your second life. You’ll find the Library in your inventory folder, where you will discover up to 30 or more different avatars to try out. You’ll find a number of human and fantasy forms as well as some spectacular robots, a variety of animals and other different forms. Most are mesh, and some you can dress in clothes from your inventory. Have a little fun and explore life as a werewolf, or a cute mouse.
Tumblr media
My partner and I often have fun with the system avatars, often dressing them up for themes at different venues.  Below is the raccoon from the system library, dressed for a Thanksgiving theme using classic clothing from Market Place. A number of stores offer free clothing and props for joining their groups
Tumblr media
How about being a mouse, for a Disney themed event?
Tumblr media
Another fun way of creating unique characters it to play around with shapes and skins on some of the fully modifiable avatars in your inventory, or a full modify permission free avatar. We have created some cute alien characters and some funny human shapes.
Tumblr media
Here we used some almost free avatars from Market Place to create BubbaJo and his Mom, dressing them in clothes from our collection.
Tumblr media
Here we created avatars of our own, changing the shape and skin colour. Avatars can be modified across areas of the entire body. Here we added props for a ‘Sugar Candy” theme
Tumblr media
Here are a few examples of more mature avatars that were created for a “Seniors Day Out” theme. Below is another example from the same event.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Although we go for humour, creating Christmas Elves, for example. There are communities that cater for those who are into role playing fantasy scenarios.
Tumblr media
Probably the less said about the two avatars below, the better, but BubbaJo was created from a humorous male avatar and Snoopy is a complete avatar available in world and on Market Place
Tumblr media
Of course you don’t have to limit yourself to living , breathing creatures... The avatar below (Plate of Peas) was created by Grim Bros, and is full functioning and able to dance to human form animations
Tumblr media
As I said before, the ‘tiny’ community is a fun way to let off steam with other people who have a wonderful sense of humour. Tiny avatars have their own animations (the crusher used to shrink the avatars will break if used for human form anumations). You can be a tiny anything. I have a tiny rottweiler who dresses as a flapper . There are full outfits for your tiny avatar. I also have a tiny kangaroo.
Tumblr media
An example of a tiny avatar, is available on Market Place.  So why be human in a world without limits, and constraints. Use your imagination and explore something different.

I Don’t Speak English
Non English Speaking Sims in Second Life
Tumblr media
The Official Second Life website has an extensive list of sims that cover many languages and destinations.  When you first join Second Life, you will be settled on a sim based on your language of choice, or country. For example there is London City, Paris France and many more. The International Destinations Guide is the place to start to explore .
As far as Live Music and Clubs, there are many that cater to people from all walks of life ad countries. There are many live singers who sing in a number of languages from Spanish, Portuguese, German, Italian, Dutch, Turkish, French and many more. Search in your language to find destinations to visit.
Tumblr media
Gabriel DeSilva is from Portugal. He does most of his shows in English, but sings in other languages.

Why Not?
Entertainment Destinations in Second Life
Certainly the attraction to virtual worlds, of any sort, is the ability to be who you want to be, without the constraints of age, ability, financial limitations, and gravity!
In a virtual world you can dance for hours on end, in platform heels and a leather jump suit. You can zip line to the base of the virtual Grand Canyon, base jump from a high mountain in a fantasy world, parachute, fly a plane, ride a Harley through the mountains and have a romantic picnic at the summit and hundreds more experiences. Almost anything you can imagine doing in reality, is possible without risk or expense in a virtual world.
Role play is another aspect of virtual worlds. Again, whatever you can imagine, likely has a group dedicated to your imagined scenario.
You can live in a small town in the 1950s, complete with malt shop, garage, town square, school and much more. You dress for the period, and take part in every day life of that period.  Medieval role play sims, where you can build a castle, and live like the Lord of the Manor. There are also virtual (and RL affiliated) Motorcycle Clubs, Sports Clubs, Gamer Experiences and a thriving community of Musicians and DJs who provide music and entertainment in the many Venues across the grid in Second Life. You just need to explore, and you will find something to suit your taste in Music, or entertainment from General to Adult Rated experiences.
I am no expert on many of the Gaming and RP sims, but you will find like minded people if you explore.

You can take a ride on the Holiday Express and explore Santa’s workshop., You can take a walk inside a snow globe, or try any winter sport you can imagine, with realistic animations and plenty of fun surprises.
