19. was near a worthy successor of L?

worthy certainly, happy to be a successor? not feeling that part. i think near had an interest in being L as a child, possibly to the point of idolship, or just seeing someone older and strange like him felt nice. like ‘ i’m not the only one ‘, and saw the success L found in investigative work as possible success for himself.

but i see the artistry in his dioramas, i noticed how once he started making finger puppets it was kind of the only toy he wanted to play with. the mechas were swapped for puppet supplies, the bust we see in the one-shot epilogue is amazing, the beautiful card towers he can make- - i think near is an artist. and maybe the passion didn’t spark until a little later in life, or he was never given the opportunity until he thought maybe making finger puppets would be fun.

i think near can find success and notoriety in being L, but fulfillment? nahhhh. . . maybe being both L & a hobby artist is enough for him. but we haven’t really seen him smile since the fall of KIRA. i think near is trapped in this role, he wanted it once possibly, but not at all anymore. he got his revenge, L’s death is avenged, he won the war, the world is back to how it should be and he’ll always feel mello’s weight to it being that way. but i think its canon that the KIRA case is the most fun L has had in his career, and near STARTED OFF with that. everything else from here is going to fall flat, even when it came to the selling of the death note, near just watched and laid around after making the ryuk bust. . . i don’t think near is happy.
