Real talk: It mustn't be easy for her to see me not live my best life with all the physical challenges that come with my spinal cord injury. Especially, this past year. I did a little bathroom upgrade. For someone who spends a lot of time in the bathroom for medical reasons, I wanted to make sure I made it an as comfortable place as could be. After months of planning, calculating and waiting for the right moment... This was it. I also added a new member to the family, a Scindapsus Pictus Exotica. (Also know as a Satin Pothos, but it's not a Pothos, so we're going to act like I never said that.) This year, is the year of the upgrade. And this upgrade definitely has my approval. It like walking into a spa, but in my own bathroom. I found an old Pothos growing outside, completely neglected. If I could, I would've taken the whole plant, but since I couldn't... I took a few strings, soaked them in water overnight and cut and cleaned them up. These were two little left overs that I just couldn't say goodbye to. And, thank goodness I didn't because they are sprouting! Did you know Pothos is also known as Devil's Ivy because it's so hard to kill? Learning so much from saving a plant. Since my outpatient medical procedure, I had the time to really digest what I've experienced for the past ten years. I worked so hard on myself, on my dreams, while I never felt I had a "safe zone." The past year, I have created it myself. Two years ago I saw one of my "safe zones", @2ndlifecuracao evaporate while slowly getting out of my reach. The pandemic hot. I didn't blink twice. I took on an opportunity that unexpectedly came on my path, @innovationcur and I didn't look back for there was a future to create. I am in that future now. I am living in my "safe zone"! All the medical challenges of late are a test, and as I'm patiently recovering, I see what I've created in the past ten years, with the last year being the cherry on top. I heard someone say, "Sir, you might not walk again." While lying in hospital bed, from a neurologist, May 19th, 2012. I accomplished most of what I set out to do since. I learned to walk again. I learned to become a business owner. I learned to love again. And, for the first time in my life, I learned to be really free. I am beyond proud of how intentionally I chose to live. And I hope I'm granted the strength to continue to share this lust for life. I promised a friend I wouldn't just post bullshit stories on my timeline, so here is a no bullshit post 👇 I have been physically and medically challenged for 9 years and the last year, just as I was having huge breakthroughs financially, professionally and personally, I felt like I was getting crushed emotionally. I have never promised to be perfect (the opposite, read my favorite quote.) I tried however to be the best friend, partner, co-worker etc. that I could be. At this moment, that means a weaker man, physically, and a triggered man, emotionally. I have always carried my heart on my sleeve, because I want us, people, to be more human, and more humane, to each other. We are so much more than our image, or our profession. And I won't/can't hold up a fake image of myself. I know for sure, that I am human first. So is this lady next to me. We talk through our darkest moments and believe me, they've been plenty. I am recovering at home from an outpatient medical procedure that feels very invasive, and I know that's just the start of this freaking challenge that I'm going to overcome. I am unfortunately in a "No" phase in life. But I remain a YES to life. I have three physical issues that you can't see on the outside but that are really testing my grit. 1. Gass build up in my intestines that at times can get really uncomfortable, to even painful. 2. Sitting issues that cause a lot of nerve pain and dizziness. 3. Urinary challenges that resulted in a suprapubic catheter (tube inserted through my belly into my blatter.) These challenges make me challenge myself, and force me to take moments, by the moment. For that reason, I have to say no to many things and I'm fine with it. it is surprising to me how easy I adapted to this as I don't feel guilty when people ask me (again) if I really can't or don't want to. I'm in the midst of a project that can realize multiple dreams. But, I have to make choices... I'm choosing myself. My recuperation. My health. My long term benefit, instead of just a happy moment. So, if I say no to you right now, that doesn't mean I say no to your forever. You can learn new skills, but you always have to keep in mind that you need to adapt to those skills, and those skills,need to be adapted to you 🫵 When you learn to drive 🚘 someone teaches you how a car functions and what the traffic🚦⛔ regulations are. Once you have learned enough of the basic skills, you get a Driver's License to go explore the roads on your own. That's where you learn to drive with one hand. To speed up, or chill while you enjoy the view. This applies to any form of education. It goes for every class, course or training you will take. One way, doesn't make it your way. Learn. Process. Adapt. Improve. And if you really want to become good at something, teach! There is no better way to learn than to teach. For you will see, there are no identical students, nor are there set ways of teaching. The text book might be the same, but the outcome won't. I had a delightful night in last night, adulting with some friends. I enjoy my new found love for cooking and entertaining and having conversations. Especially with people who are breaking the mold. Pirates 🏴‍☠️ in their own right. Unfortunately, after a delightful time together, I had to visit the hospital again for another urology issue, again! It has become a real downer at times but I'm doing my best to not let medical issues keep me down. So, this morning, I put on my favorite shirt, took out the left over desert, home-made lemon pie quiche and enjoyed it as breakfast. Fancy with a fork and knife 🍴 because I'm #classy!
