Many in the world today use the word “leadership” in so many ways it's tough to understand what they mean fully.

John Maxwell made the word “leadership” popular in the early 90s, following Peter Drucker, who made the word “management” famous.

Yet today, many who have spun off Maxwell have escaped his primary teaching.

Today, it seems that a “Leader” is everyone from the self-proclaimed to top income earners. The influencer commits suicide, a musician who is convicted of domestic violence, or teachers having sex with minors. Heck, even politicians with an active OF page are seen as leaders by someone.

Yet, is that the true definition of a leader?

We can all find common ground by agreeing that leaders come in all shapes and sizes.

Maybe we can agree that a leader has influence, but not all influencers are leaders.

If we can agree on the above as a baseline, then maybe we can agree that a leader’s true character is more important than their charisma.

A charismatic politician or preacher doesn't necessarily make them a leader. A manipulator or influencer, sure. But a true leader - NO!

Whereas one can't be an influencer without a following, I will contend a true leader may never have a following.

Or a better way of writing this might be to say, “A world-changing leader may never have a huge worldwide following.”

Take the Time Man of the Year - 1938 as an example. He transformed Europe in his day and had a worldwide devastating impact. Yet most people would not see him as someone they would follow as a leader.

So, what can we agree on that would be a baseline enduring quality of a true leader?

I would contend, and offer up for thought, that a true leader isn't one with colossal influence, a large following, deep financial pockets, or some prestigious title.

A leader is one who, when they can’t live by example, leads by repentance!

They hold their influence lightly and tightly their responsibility of guiding others well.

They accept they are not the hero of the story but the one who guides the true hero to greatness.

Being as close to age 100 as I am to age 20, I have learned a precious life lesson. Leadership has nothing to do with what I call myself or perceive myself as.

But it has everything to do with how those who watched my actions and heard my words were transformed… for the better or worse!

If the transformation made them better people, then they will see me as a leader who helped them.

If the transformation was a traumatic one, causing emotional or physical devastation… even if just in their reality, then a leader, I am not!

No matter your role in life, don't assume you are a leader because you have influence.

Many husbands and fathers see themselves as leaders… and have no relationship with their families and live emotionally lonely yet financially wealthy lives!
