it's called refeeding syndrome, and it's entirely caused by reckless outside human interaction. when someone is genuinely starving, their body makes a switch from consuming carbohydrates to consuming fat and protein to save energy, which is why muscle deteriorates and the outline of the skeleton becomes visible. this is called micronutrient depletion, which is a type of metabolism that doesn't use vitamins, minerals, or electrolytes in any of the ways a healthy body does, and this causes severe depletion of these 3 micronutrients inside the body.

when large amounts of food are suddenly reintroduced to people experiencing a stage 5 famine, the body rarely responds correctly because it has been so severely malnourished for so long. the most common reaction your body will exhibit if you are experiencing stage 5 famine is refeeding syndrome, especially if there are large amounts of complex carbohydrates in the food you are given. insulin secretion skyrockets inside your body, which drives the miniscule remaining electrolytes present inside your body into your bloodstream in an attempt to correctly metabolize the food, which doesn't happen. instead, the massive electrolyte imbalance causes universal organ failure, and the most common organs to go first are the lungs, kidneys and heart. refeeding syndrome also causes neurological dysfunction and seizures.

and no, all of you pea-brained follow-the-bandwagon keyboard warriors reading this, it doesn't take a year to hit stage 5 famine. you can die of starvation in a month if uneducated and religiously motivated ethnic cleansing doesn't catch you first.
