Theme Install Tutorial

So you want to install or add a custom theme. Sounds easy, but here are a few steps you can follow so you can rest easy.

Go to the settings page for the blog you wish to customize. - Do this by Clicking the gear at the top of your dashboard.

Click the Customize Button

The appearance sidebar appears to the left of the blog so you can get a preview of the work you are doing.

Click the Edit HTML button

An html editing sidebar replaces the Appearance sidebar

Select all text and replace it with the custom html you copied from pastebin or other source.

Click the Update Preview button to see the changes. THIS WILL NOT BE THE FINAL FORM OF YOUR PAGE

A new button appears! Click it to save your work.

Click the Appearance button at the top left to return the the Appearance Tab. You should note the image has changed to show you are using custom HTML instead of a pre-selected theme.

Hit the save button here - YES SAVE AGAIN!

Hit the close button. No we aren't done, but the appearance sidebar won't include the relevant customization options until you come back to it.

You should find yourself back on the settings page for the blog you are editing. Go ahead and hit the Customize button again.

Scroll down and look at any and all further customizations you can make the the theme outside of editing the HTML further. Play with anything you would like to change, making sure to add links and pages as you need them.  Keep in mind not all themes display pages, so you'll have to add links manually.

In the advanced section, add any custom css to further edit the page or add features not included in the html. This is a good way to edit some elements of the page without altering the actual html code.

Good Luck! Save often and know where to find the original coding just in case.

Most things are coded to default as seen in the image (aside from the extra links). Most everything is customizable, the links default into a new section in the right sidebar, Checking the Links Left option puts them with the rest of the links.

The UfYH tweak is finished. Not Quite has been hacked to the blog maintainer's satisfaction.

This is how it ended up, with the footer, and the newly created sidebar, out of the flow of the rest of the page and situated on the bottom right corner of the page.

In addition, there's a link back to my personal blog, so other people can ask for help.

Best of all, there was no need to edit the actual html of the theme. Sometimes it can't be avoided, this time it was!

This is an image of what I've done with a side bar request for the Not Quite Theme.

because a lot of the measurements for Not Quite are hard coded and not inherited or done as a percentage, a complete side bar (second column technically 3rd column visually) would require an html overhaul.

The compromise was a side bar with only the required information, and a sticky post section that will scroll so that if the text won't fit it won't be removed.

This TEXT FILE contains the information that needs to go in the description section of the customize page. This is where the Sticky Post text will need to be edited. You could leave your description in the description box and just add this to it, or move your description to the Sticky Post section.

*** The code for the Google Search bar will only search UFYH. The code for the itunes appstore widget are for UFYH as well. If you are not UFYH and use this code please remove this information.
