Some thoughts on the Fantasy genre....

I saw a post on Twitter about a man who was disappointed by the fantasy section at his local target. Calling it "nothing but smut and booktok slop".

This, of course, irritated some people. And I admit, my first reaction was a bit of irritation as well.

However, I think there's something deeper here. A man, or anyone really who has been reading fantasy for decades has seen a shift in the genre to things that some might consider "slop".

Published books you'll find in your local target are there to make money. That's why publishers get into the business. In times like these, they aren't seeking to create the next best piece of culture-altering literature. They're in it to sell books, and they're willing to jump on any change in the market that sells those books.

So I think seeing more romance-based fantasy, and less of the classic fantasy that man might be seeking in bookstores and on shelves isn't necessarily a comment on society or readers as a whole, but on the economic market and profitability of books.

There is a place for all stories and all types of fantasy. Whether it be Smut with sprinkles of plot, or epic fantasy that takes three books just to understand the world. Epic fantasy. High Fantasy. Romance Fantasy. They're all just a legitimate as the last. Seeing things on bookshelves is just a marker of what publishers think will sell.

I started querying agents and got my first rejection 😩 Objectively, I know it’s normal and I’ve got lots more ahead of my but it still stings a little.

I’m an overthinker so I can’t help but wonder why, and worry that maybe I jumped the gun on querying….

I queried my first literary agent today! I have high hopes but I’m managing my expectations too. I did it to take away the scariness of it, and I think the biggest challenge I have for my manuscript is the length. How do you know what to cut in writing?

Worldbuilding

It's odd to be worldbuilding a society that exalts a select elite for this birth and nothing else----when I live in a country that praises the elite for their wealth and nothing else.
