Summary:

Steve and Eddie’s friendship developed into something more after defeating Vecna with the rest of the Party the prior summer. Steve had reached a point where he wanted to address the fast-growing feelings for Eddie that he had. Eddie, unable to accept that Steve’s feelings were pure, pushed him away in an attempt to protect himself ultimately resulting in Steve leaving Hawkins to stay with one of his aunt and uncle in California with the intention of not returning until he received a phone call from Robin notifying him of her mom falling ill. Steve finds himself back in Hawkins, struggling to cope with all the returning memories of the trauma he endured and had been avoiding since he left in addition to coming to terms with the fact that his feelings he had for Eddie were not in fact bullshit like it had been suggested. If they were, he wouldn’t feel like leaving again would be the hardest battle he’d ever endure to date.

(Or Eddie feels like he isn't good enough for Steve and breaks things off causing Steve to leave Hawkins. Steve comes back and they're both still hopelessly in-love with each other but are afraid to admit it.)
