Punctuating Dialogue

➸ “This is a sentence.”

➸ “This is a sentence with a dialogue tag at the end,” she said.

➸ “This,” he said, “is a sentence split by a dialogue tag.”

➸ “This is a sentence,” she said. “This is a new sentence. New sentences are capitalized.”

➸ “This is a sentence followed by an action.” He stood. “They are separate sentences because he did not speak by standing.”

➸ She said, “Use a comma to introduce dialogue. The quote is capitalized when the dialogue tag is at the beginning.”

➸ “Use a comma when a dialogue tag follows a quote,” he said.

“Unless there is a question mark?” she asked.

“Or an exclamation point!” he answered. “The dialogue tag still remains uncapitalized because it’s not truly the end of the sentence.”

➸ “Periods and commas should be inside closing quotations.”

➸ “Hey!” she shouted, “Sometimes exclamation points are inside quotations.”

However, if it’s not dialogue exclamation points can also be “outside”!

➸ “Does this apply to question marks too?” he asked.

If it’s not dialogue, can question marks be “outside”? (Yes, they can.)

“Interruption” — but there are situations dashes may be outside.

Prologue

Truthfully, you weren’t fully sure on how you ended up here. You knew you were in the manor and that you were shunned away like a beast, but you just couldn’t remember how it all started. Of how you were robbed of your mortality.

And whilst you walked through the empty corridors of your abode, you take a glance towards one of the mirrors hung up on the wall, only for it to be meaningless as you couldn’t see yourself looking back. Another thing you weren’t sure of. After all, why look in a mirror with no reflection?

What a shame. You would say that it was tiring, but as the being you are now, tiredness was only a trick of the mind.

Anyways, moving onward—metaphorically and literally. You begin to reach the foyer of your quarters, past one of the many vast staircases thats were unnecessarily scattered around the manor. Luckily for you, you didn’t need to waste your time trudging down the stairs when you could drift your way towards the entrance doors. Magic was always interesting in your eyes—although teleportation would probably have been more useful. When offered an inch, you would always took the mile.

Maybe that’s how you ended up here. Wait… where are you again?

Suddenly snapping out of your thoughts, you gazed around to look at your surroundings. Blades of grass grew from the ground and trees decorated the horizon—simple information indicating that you had stepped out of your manor. Yet you can’t recall why you wanted to walk out in the first place, weren’t you content with residing there? Weren’t you—

Suddenly you feel a sense of dread stab you like a silver sword, carving into your skin that you’ve been here formerly—but you weren’t fully sure. You felt like a caged animal, with the hunter’s hands slowly wrapping around you… and it felt awfully real. Too real.

“There you are my crimson apple.” A velvety voice whispers in your ear, “You gave me quite a surprise when I couldn’t find you in our chamber.” 

You, oh petrified you, froze in response as wicked hands enveloped your waist. No matter how much your body screamed to flee in response, you couldn’t find yourself to do so. Not even when a hand traced over your body and curled around your neck, or when tainted lips pressed against your bare neck—since when was your collar moved out of the way..?

Even as you were cradled within the snakes choking grip, you still couldn’t find yourself to move away. Because truthfully, you weren’t fully sure on how you ended up here. You never were in the first place.
