My thoughts on Anakin Skywalker have shifted dramatically over the last year.

I once loved him, then stonchly hated him, to now just... Being somewhere in the middle.

On one hand, I can see him as a deeply tragic character George Lucas intended him to be, but on the other hand.... Genocide and child murder....

It's very difficult to like a character when they gut children in the council chamber.

But it's also difficult to hate him because he essentially lost everything he knew and loved in the span of a single Corusantian night...

So yeah, Ani is a character I have deeply mixed feelings on...

Was watching a ContraPoints video (popular trans lady YouTuber) on some gender philosophy and got to thinking about trans girl Ani nuances.

OKAY SO: Contrapoints makes a comment in the video (transcript here) that she views herself as a boy who became a woman, not a girl who didn't realize it yet, which is a relatively uncommon approach among trans people, and that's in the middle of a longer discussion on the flaws in radfem theology (which I watched right after this PhilosophyTube video, and accidentally conflated the two since the former talked a lot about systems/structures of gender).

Anyway, I'm rotating that in my mind with regards to Anakin, who grew up in a setting that could easily be interpreted as having a much foggier distinction between Man and Woman than between Slave and Maste,r or human and twilek, etc.

It's entirely feasible that, on Tatooine in particular, the social elements of gender came down to very practical concerns (reproduction) and very superficial signs (e.g. hairstyle could maybe broadcast intended gender, and who wears skirts) outside of the specific situation of highly gendered and sexual forms of slavery (Jabba's dancing girls), which was relatively rare compared to more standard forms, like shop work or janitorial or what have you.

So you have an Anakin who grew up in a setting where "am I a girl?" isn't necessarily a question that would have the same answer as in another setting with more defined gender distinctions, in terms of both expression and role, and of the matter of identity at that confluence.

Then he--still he, at that time--meets Padmé and the handmaidens (very feminine, very girl, but not in a way that's at all like the way women on Tatooine willingly engage with), and encounters Coruscant culture (lots of gender dynamics due to the culture mash, but a low-key Western Misogyny vibe in the Senate and other non-Jedi settings Anakin's liable to encounter), as well as the Jedi classes on gender and sexuality and respecting/navigating those parts of culture on other planets.

As a result, Anakin starts developing a new, more nuanced and expansive understanding of gender, where it's more than just a few small differences, and the people around are mostly Jedi, who are also pretty dang open to nontraditional gender approaches etc And Anakin sort of… grows into wanting to be woman? In a way that isn't the usual "I always knew I was a girl" and more of an "I've learned what people consider a girl, and I'd like to be one."

And like. Ani COULD go back to thinking of gender in Tatooine terms, but why bother? Being a girl makes her happy. She wasn't unhappy as a boy in that gender framework, but she's happy as a girl now.

But because she didn't mind being raised a boy, she might say things a "when I was a boy" or "back when I was still living as a boy"

Me every time I hear a new, interesting take on gender: How can I apply this to a fictional character?

Also tbf this settles pretty well with my general thoughts on nb Anakin as well, where gender is like… It Sure Is A Thing That Exists. Anyway, Where's The Blasterfire?

since i'm more active here now, i thought what better way to reintroduce myself than with my homebrew Thrawn & Friends Polycule

let's start at the top because it's the easiest: wutroow and ar'alani are 100% happily married because, well, you saw how they were in the ascendancy trilogy. to me they kinda parallel thranto in a way. and then of course once lani meets faro she's obsessed. brings her back home and says "look i got us a new girlfriend" and wutroow is obsessed as well

then ar'alani and borika being exes is about how they definitely crossed paths when they were both irizi, and who am i to not smoosh two beautiful women together and make them a thing. they broke up though because lani went into the military and borika married bomarmo (canon relationship but ask me about my extensive nonbinary he/him butch bomarmo hc)

the bomarmo and eli vanto one night stand was @doctorwenqing's brilliant idea. she wrote a fic about it and i was obsessed

now let's look at eli vanto. i firmly believe he had a crush on anakin skywalker growing up (those who have read postmortem will especially Get It), and then of course in my head he's married to thrawn, they're endgame in every universe. but that's not all, which brings me to my favorite poly ship ever, ✨elithramakro✨

thrawn and samakro definitely had a love-hate thing going on in the ascendancy days, and i have a lot of thoughts about how samakro tackled his feelings towards thrawn after thrawn got exiled. in my mind it takes years for samakro to admit that he did love thrawn, in a way, but eventually he does. and when thrawn returns home they reconcile and rekindle their relationship in a more healthy way

and then elimakro has definitely been written about at length and discussed a lot in fandom over the years (i highly recommend @elivanto's elimakro fic "one man's hell is another's god", it'll change your life) but i firmly believe those two would hit it off and bond over how utterly insane serving under thrawn was. anyway in my mind they all eventually get over themselves and get together as a triad, though samakro is still in a happy married relationship with thalias (or as i like to think about her at that point in the timeline, patriarch mitth'ali'astov)

and of course thalias's crush on thrawn is very easy to see in the text if you're looking for it. i personally don't think it was reciprocated, but i respect people who do

then, thrawn definitely had a one night stand with padme and anakin in alliances. the chemistry he had with both of them is undeniable (padme and thrawn both topped anakin, if you ask me)

and finally, thrawn's other boyfriends: nuso esva, uingali and jorj car'das. i love all of them and in my personal version of the timeline they're not the "main" relationships, but they're still very important to thrawn. a more recent addition to my "thrawn boyfriends" roster is captain enoch, who is not on here because i drew this diagram a while ago, but when it comes to him, i like to imagine that during the time thrawn spent with him on peridea, they both took comfort in each other and relied on each other in a lot of ways

my beloved gilad is not on here because i haven't really figured out how to fit him into this timeline (and never felt the need to), but trust that i love pells/thrawn too

and finally, this is my personal headcanon and not really based on anything except vibes. feel free to ask about any of these because this whole thing is the result of literal years spent thinking about thrawn&friends every day, and i'm more than happy to elaborate on every part of it. and if you have your own version of the throlycule™, feel free to share!

Han and Leia waiting to get married makes total sense! At the end of return of the Jedi the only time they’ve spent as a couple is when their relationship started in ESB and its continuation in ROJ most of which they were in battle. Yes Leia has been thinking about him for about a year now but she hasn’t been able to get closer to him in that time, and for Han it’s like not time has passed at all. Plus there’s still a fucking War going on that they very much are invoked in. Marriage is not on their minds, especially Leia’s. (Plus all the traumatic shit they have to process)

I like that Leia is a senator and not a general. Okay hear me out. Leia is trained in diplomacy as much as she is in combat. She was a senator before she was a rebel. And she has always been very much involved in matters of state and would want to feel like she was actively doing something to keep the republic in check. The rebellion was not just a war to her it was making the Galaxy a better place that doesn’t end when the war for her so the natural next step would be a government position. Granted she still acts as a general if need be and goes far beyond her job description countless times.
