May in Aotearoa turns the volume up on the sounds that don't fit neatly into a box. Alternative NZ music thrives in the shadows in bedrooms, basements, and backroom gigs where creativity isn't polished, it's raw. This month isn’t just about radio play or industry polish; it’s about noise with meaning, mood with melody, and lyrics that cut deeper. From post-punk angst to shoegaze haze, lo-fi beats to experimental folk, NZ’s alt scene is loud, weird, and completely unmissable. This is for the ones who never needed permission to be different and made music anyway.

Her debut music video, "Deadspace," released on Halloween, visually represents her experiences with burnout and mental health struggles, featuring imagery inspired by the video game of the same name.
Beyond her solo work, Anti Matter collaborates in the duo Lux Graves, further exploring her musical versatility. Snakes: My Latest Obsession
Tumblr media
Lately, I’ve found myself mildly possessed by snakes—not the real kind (though I wouldn't say no), but their image, symbolism, and persistent slither through fashion and home dĂ©cor. There's something refreshing about embracing a creature that's historically been accused of everything from original sin to turning people into stone. Frankly, the drama is iconic.
I’m not saying snakes are the new black. I'm just saying if you're still decorating with skulls and not serpents, you might be a bit behind.
Here’s how I’ve been feeding the obsession without needing a terrarium license:
For the Home: Venomous Vibes Only
Your living space should reflect your inner world—unsettling, vaguely occult, and suspiciously quiet.
Tumblr media
Eden Snake Wall Hanger: Nothing says “welcome” quite like a metal snake on the wall. It’s tasteful, ominous, and ensures no one ever asks to stay the night.
Tumblr media
Zarina Snake Embroidered Velour Cushion: Plush, embroidered, and just smug enough to make you feel like you’re living in an antique funeral parlour. In a good way.
Tumblr media
Saraph Snakes Mug: Because caffeine tastes better when served with a warning.
Tumblr media
Saraph Snakes Trinket Dish: Perfect for jewellery, spare coins, or the ring you’ll eventually inherit from that aunt no one talks about.
Tumblr media
Saraph Snakes Ramen Bowl: Slurping noodles while staring into the abyss just got more aesthetic.
Wardrobe: Shedding Skin, Gaining Looks
There’s nothing subtle about wearing snakes. That’s the point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Deception Snake Foil Print Velour Mini Wrap Dress: Looks like something you’d wear to seduce a vampire in the VIP section of a funeral. Ideal.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Zarina Velour Applique Midi Wrap Dress: It’s green, velour, and dramatically embroidered. Wear it when you want to look like you hex for fun and attend brunch out of spite.
Why Snakes?
Snakes don’t care what anyone thinks. They don’t beg to be understood. They’re feared, worshipped, and quietly thriving in the underbrush. Honestly, it’s aspirational.
They’re visually pleasing and vaguely threatening—much like my entire personality.
So if you’re looking to add a touch of serpentine chaos to your look or lair, I suggest embracing the obsession now before it becomes another watered-down Pinterest trend. You heard it here first.
Stay cold-blooded.

If you’re after a gripping psychological thriller, Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn is one of those rare stories that keeps you glued from the first page to the last shot of the TV series.
Here’s why I recommend both the book and the HBO series—they each offer something slightly different but equally chilling.
Sharp Objects is Flynn’s debut novel, and she really goes deep with it. The story revolves around Camille Preaker, a journalist with a complicated, traumatic past, who’s sent back to her hometown to cover the murders of two young girls. It’s dark, intense, and full of messed-up family dynamics. Camille’s return home brings back her personal demons, especially with her toxic, controlling mother, Adora.
Tumblr media
Flynn does a great job of getting inside Camille’s head. The book’s first-person perspective makes you feel every ounce of her emotional pain, self-harm issues, and the overwhelming sense of dread lurking in the town of Wind Gap. The way she writes Camille’s mental state is disturbing but fascinating.
Flynn’s sharp, uncompromising writing pulls you into Camille’s world, where you can almost feel the oppressive small-town atmosphere.
The psychological depth of Camille’s self-harm and how it connects to the broader mystery is explored more fully here than in the TV series.
If you enjoy complex, flawed characters, you’ll appreciate how the book doesn’t shy away from Camille’s raw, unfiltered thoughts.
The HBO adaptation of Sharp Objects took what was amazing about the book and translated it into a visual nightmare in the best way. Amy Adams is perfect as Camille. You can practically feel her tension in every scene, and Patricia Clarkson as Adora? Absolute gold. The show sticks closely to the plot, but it adds a layer of atmospheric unease that’s hard to capture on paper.
Director Jean-Marc VallĂ©e, who also directed Big Little Lies, brings his signature style—disjointed editing, quick flashbacks, and haunting imagery. It’s like you’re stuck inside Camille’s head, constantly flashing between her childhood trauma and the disturbing present.
Amy Adams' performance—she’s vulnerable, broken, but also determined. It’s some of her best work.
Tumblr media
The way the show uses visuals and pacing to build suspense is masterful. Every shot feels intentional, drawing out psychological tension even more.
The creepy atmosphere of Wind Gap is captured so well on screen, with eerie shots of Adora’s Southern Gothic mansion and the town’s dark underbelly.
Book or TV First? I’d say read the book first if you want to immerse yourself in Camille’s inner turmoil and the psychological layers that Flynn writes so well. But if you prefer to see everything unfold visually with a bit of suspense and a phenomenal cast, go for the show. Either way, both formats complement each other, and together, they deliver a complete and unsettling experience.
Whether you read the book, watch the show, or both, Sharp Objects is a wild, dark ride that will stay with you long after you’re done. If you love dark mysteries with complex characters, it’s an absolute must.

Trigger Warning: The following article discusses graphic content related to extreme gore, which may be disturbing to some readers. Please proceed with caution.
Tumblr media
Herman the Shocker, a notorious website known for its collection of graphic and disturbing images, offers a stark, albeit grim, window into human anatomy and the vulnerabilities of the human body. While the site is often associated with shock value and gore, there's a scientific aspect that can be examined, particularly from the perspective of medical and forensic professionals.
At its core, Herman the Shocker serves as a repository for images and videos that depict real-life injuries, autopsies, and other graphic content. These images, while deeply unsettling, reveal the consequences of trauma, disease, and violence on the human body. For forensic pathologists, coroners, and even medical students, such material can provide a harsh but real-world perspective on the fragility of life and the complexities of human anatomy.
Tumblr media
In the medical field, understanding the impact of trauma is crucial. The site’s content can illustrate the extent of injuries caused by accidents, violent acts, or self-inflicted harm, offering a visual supplement to clinical education. For instance, studying the images from a forensic standpoint allows professionals to learn about the mechanisms of injury—how different forces and tools affect the body differently—and to recognize patterns that can help in determining cause of death or in developing life-saving medical interventions.
It's essential to emphasize that the content on Herman the Shocker is not curated with educational intent in mind. Unlike medical textbooks or professional training materials, the images are often presented without context, making them more suited for those with a specific interest or background in medicine or forensics. Additionally, the ethical implications of viewing and sharing such content must be carefully considered. The website operates in a gray area where the boundary between educational value and exploitation of graphic content can blur.
Tumblr media
For those in the medical or forensic fields, sites like Herman the Shocker may offer a unique, albeit uncomfortable, opportunity to witness the extremes of human anatomy and the realities of life and death. Yet, it is vital to approach such content with respect for the individuals depicted and an awareness of the potential psychological impact of repeated exposure to graphic material.
While Herman the Shocker is primarily seen as a shock site, it inadvertently highlights the intersection of science, anatomy, and the macabre, offering a dark yet informative view into the human condition. This content should be approached with caution and a strong understanding of its intended use, whether for educational or professional purposes.
