Aren’t donairs a Nova Scotia thing?

well i was doing this anyway so Here we Are : ) Hmm, it’s almost as if there is a cultural exchange and overlap between us or something, as I have mentioned many times before.

Yes, donairs first appeared in Halifax in the early 70s and made it out to Edmonton by the early 80s. A lot of their popularity in Edmonton is owed to the large east coast population here, but there’s also something very blue-collar and messy about donairs that really appeals to people from both provinces.

Edmonton also has more donair shops than Calgary, Halifax, or even Toronto because of their popularity here, and you can get a donair at most pizza or burger joints too on top of that. With great numbers comes great variety in order to stand out, the kind of innovation that often makes Haligonians squirm when they encounter “Edmonton Style” donairs.
