I've been toying with uploading this for a while, especially since #tdov was yesterday, but I don't usually like to post pictures of myself for a few reasons. Despite this I've decided to start trying to post more about my experience as a Transgender person, as inspired by other trans people active on social media. The main reason why I want to do this is because I know how helpful and supportive reading about someone else's experiences, in a similar position to yourself can be. In my case, I am a transgender male of Indian origin. I am not religious, however the majority of my family is, and it is certainly an interesting experience going to religious places and events being a transgender male. I am out to most family and all friends. I am visible. I know it's stupidly late as this was yesterday, but I'll be honest, I tried to stay away from social media for the past day because I couldn't face seeing all these posts about #tdov Yes I'm proud to be trans, and yes I'm proud to be visible for those who can't. But sometimes it's just so hard to keep going because I feel like I'm never going to be the person I should. As much as I'm inspired by and happy for trans guys on social media who are progressing in their journey, having top surgery and being on T, I can't help but feel like I'm stuck and won't ever get there. I know this is just me moaning and I don't have it as bad as many others, but I can't help it. I'm scared about telling a few members of my family tomorrow that I'm trans. It's not my first time coming out and I don't think it'll be my last, but I'm scared because I truly don't know how they'll react. They're very religious, part of a religion I know doesn't shine a good light on LGBTQ+ people. I'm not scared of them rejecting me, I can deal with that. I'm scared of them rejecting my parents because they might think it's their "fault" I'm trans. I want to be respected and have people use the right pronouns and name, but I don't want to hurt my parents. I know this hasn't been a very positive post, I'm sorry. But I want to make people aware of what it's like to be trans, dealing with dysphoria every day and the impact of being trans on family and friends. As much as we'd like it to be it's not all rainbows. I'm proud to be trans, and given the choice to be an cisgender male or a transgender male I'd still choose the latter. I am trans FtM. This Instagram page (also a blog) supports and promotes the support of LGBTQ+ people, and for trans day of visibility they've created a short video involving lots of trans and gender non conforming people!
