The fox runs through snow, legs longer then the prey it hunts, agile and quicker. The prey runs until its legs ache but the fox is unrelentingly. With a vicious move, sharp teeth dig into flesh, the prey's soft white fur turning red.

The fox pants heavily, unmoving. It does t dare put down its prize, its food, still devoutly clutched now loose in the fox's jaws. the fox does not devour. the fox weeps as canines dig into flesh. it mourns when blood stains its maw.

The fox cannot talk, but some words need no language, read as easy as words on a page.

"You ran well." The fox bows its head, picking flesh off the bone with careful devotion.

"Such soft fur." The fox allows itself to nuzzle into the cooling fur, matted with drying blood.

"I am sorry." bones poke from the fur. the fox does mean it, like the knife apologies to the meat and the butcher apologies to the knife. The words are true and meant, but that doesn't stop the predator.

"i love you." the fox leaves the bones and fur to rot, flesh picked clean.

Reference on how to actually take care of a loved one (or yourself) suffering from self harming tendencies!!!

Don't:

shame them (e.g. "your body will look so ugly covered in scars like that")

Guilt them (e.g. "If you hurt yourself again i will cry")

punish them (e.g. locking them in their room of something)

point it out in front of others (this can feel humiliating and invasive e.g. "look what they did to themselves again")

Treat the harm as the root issue (it's a coping strategy in most cases)

physically restrain them in a SH episode (this causes more stress and could hurt them in long term)

Redirect using other methods of harm (self explanatory i hope. e.g. giving them a rubber band and instructing them to flick themselves when they want to hurt themselves)

ignore it (this could indicate to your loved one that the harm is ok with you and that you don't care)

corner them and force them to talk about their SH (This is triggering and can lead to more harm

Do (in the moment)

Let them know your a safe place and encourage but don't force conversation

Redirect safely (this requires knowing the reason for the harm, e.g. absentminded skin picking may need a fidget toy, sensory seeking harm may need to draw on their skin, people who enjoy the visual experience may need to use tools to visualise safely, such as fataltotheflesh.com or drawing ect)

encourage them to ride the wave (this is scary! but very effective. acknowledge the feeling, and just let it pass. don't push it away, this will only make it worse)

Treat them with dignity ( in most cases they are not a child who doesn't know what they're doing. in the case of someone who actually is very young, meet them where they are, not where other kids their age are)

interrupt (best to interrupt with a redirect if possible, but otherwise, take a moment to interrupt the action, e.g. whistling to catch their attention, holding their FREE hand)

If especially bad, or you're getting triggered, call a helpline or paramedics for them. your mental health is important to

Treat the wounds (disinfect, bandage if needed. if it's especially deep see a doctor. Vaseline and cold water can reduce the sting.)

Check up on them (what causes the episode, what where they seeking, are they ok, do they need medical assistance)

Prepare for another episode (try redirects, treats and emotional support stuffed toys, personalise if you like)

seek medication and therapy/phycology if possible

look out for non-traditional methods of harm (over-exerting themselves purposefully,flicking rubber bands on skin, exposing themselves to negative attention, exposing themselves to negative company, ect)
