I wore a binder in public for the first time today. I couldn’t buy pants because they didn’t sit right with my boxers. I stuttered when a coffee place asked for my name because I didn’t want to say the name “Andy” in front of my sister, even though she gave me inspiration for that name. I watched “The Materialists” with her and left with a feeling of being unsure that anyone would actually love ME, if anybody could love me without just secretly seeing me as a girl. This, for me, is the nonbinary experience, and if I’m honest, I don’t think I’d trade it for the world. It makes me feel real, the struggle of it all makes me feel like I’m actually doing something for myself. And even if no one loves me as this hairy cringey gremlin, I think I could die happy knowing I was happy with who I became. All this to say, no matter the dysphoria you feel, please don’t revert back to who you hated being, because if you’re doing it for yourself, it’s never the wrong decision.
