Reasons I’m excited for top surgery besides for dysphoric reasons

Dear trans men and people taking testosterone:

The reason pattern baldness is more common in men than women is because several of the genes that dictate it are X recessive. It's not primarily caused by hormones.

You have about 46 chromosomes in 23 pairs. (Occasionally, people end up with a different number.) These pairs are numbered 1-22; the 23rd are your sex chromosomes. One sex chromosome is an X chromosome. The other is either an X chromosome or a Y chromosome. Usually, having a Y chromosome makes your gonads develop into testes; most people with a Y chromosome are men.

Many genes are either dominant or recessive. Dominant genes are more likely to be expressed than recessive genes. Because chromosomes come in pairs, even if you have a recessive gene, it might not be expressed if the other chromosome has the dominant gene.

However, X chromosomes do not always have a second X. That means recessive genes on the X chromosomes are a lot more likely to be expressed in people with a Y chromosome.

That's why men are much more likely to go bald. Cis women with plenty of estrogen can go bald, too, but it's far less common because they usually need two copies of the gene.

I'm not saying that you'll never go bald. Like with all of your traits, there's a lot of factors. I'm saying that the people who try to use pattern baldness as an anti-trans fear-mongering tactic are being stupid and anti-scientific (as usual).
