Hello! Hope youre having a great day! I absolutely love how you draw clothing and how varied the layers and folds are, where do you usually take refs from? I havent found any good resources to reference from sadly, was wondering if you good help. Cheers!
there are like... two basic things to always keep in mind.
or at least i keep them in mind...
cheat trick: draw the seams!
its basically contour for your clothes. it gives more structure and detail by default. you can do like a simple line, or do like a striped line. or you go the extra mile to do a pattern stich.
Triangles Rule! clothes have a this habit of falling in triangles. like there is a Fix-point that holds the cloth and then it spreads out, usual in a triangular structure. depending how tight it is pulled the triangles get tighter, or wider when the garment is just draped draping over the body. how much into detail you want to do depends on each artist.
fix-points wher most the fold and details happens is usualy where we have our joints. elbow, knees, armpit ect.
my references are more for inspiration as to what the characters are wearing rather then how to draw the fold. though... i struggle lots with hoods but in that case i just google "hoods" and tada! dozen and dozen of references. thick hoods slim hoods. pulled up pulled down.
about layering clothing... i do in fact just... layer them? like i have my thumbs of course where its all like mixed toghether in one. but if i feel like it i take the time to go through each layer and to figure out how the clothing interact. or like... i can like this see the clothes underneath more clearly in case i need them? ha i make my own dress up dolls somehow hahah hm...
which is fun to me. because lets say it it suddenly hot or getting cold the character has some variation? uhm... i have more doodeled out. this are just few i have finished and... urgh one day i will continue figuring these guys out...
anyway this was a lot. uhm... thanks for reading this far?
hope this helped
Hi!! I love your art style and all of your art a ton :) i especially like how you do clothing. Would it trouble you to do a little tutorial? Im working on fabric and clothing myself and tbh im already using your art as reference. I like how you draw fabric so fluidly as well as how detailed and realistic it looks!! Id really love whatever tips you could offer, but either way, thanks for sharing your art with us!
wow omg thank you so much??? i tried my best to explain a few things i try to keep in mind when i draw clothes, feat fashion icon sokka themselves.
(i’m also going to cheat and add this clothing tutorial by @chiptrillino because it’s an amazing resource with more good advice)
oh hey new guide thinggg~ some basics on how to practice! there’s SO much I could add to this, so it’s just the basics :O
short (kind of): there’s more to practice than doing something repeatedly, it’s also learning new things, problem solving, and honest critique. Each of those is its own skill…also be nice to yourself!
This is a big post compiling all the printers of books, prints, and other popular comic-related merch that I (Varethane) have either worked with or heard recommended by other indie creators!
There are a lot of different categories for this subject so I’ve tried to split them up in a way that makes sense to me, though if anyone reading this has suggestions for changes I could make please feel free to suggest away! This sort of thread is most useful if it’s being continuously edited and updated to reflect more companies and resources (or to take them off, should they close their doors for whatever reason). And of course, if you know more printers or have more information on any of the ones listed here, please let me know! (Or for those of you with editing capabilities I guess you could just add them).
This post also lives on the SpiderForest Webcomic Collective forums, which is where it first started!
Everyone says NEVER TRACE!! THAT'S ART THEFT! Ok but we can do a little crime in the name of Learning.
Trace to learn, not to earn.
I like to take my own photos, but you can study whatever you want. Link back to original photos, and don't post copied artwork unless the artist is dead, cool with it, or both.
As always with learning, start every sketch with the intent to throw it away (trash for paper, quitting without saving for digital) This takes the pressure off and lets you make Bad Art, which is very important.
So let's make Bad Art of a Deer
because I happen to have one handy
Start with a photo of your subject in a nice/neutral pose with all four feet visible. (so not like me)
Freehand copy it. Try not to stylize, focusing instead of matching proportions and pose. Don't get too detailed!
It's ok if your art looks terrible and has broken legs. I've drawn LOTS of deer so I have a leg up. Everyone's art sucks in their own eyes and here's where mine went wrong:
Either lasso-distort (recommended for beginners) or redraw a copy of your first sketch with your reference behind it (scaled to match the main body of your sketch)
Put the original and modified sketches together and compare the differences. Write it down if you want. This shows you where your eyes saw things the wrong size, so you can correct for that next time.
After learning about both deer and yourself, try freehand copying again.
Marvel at your newfound knowledge and skill!
but there's always room for improvement
You can stop here and move on to your real drawing, Or do another freehand-fix-compare cycle. I actually overcorrected my "draws heads too big" and veered into "heads too small."
Another note on tracing: Learning HOW to trace is more important than anything you could learn By tracing. Draw the Anatomy, not the outline. In real life, things don't have outlines, they have bones.
These are from the same shoot which is extra useful for consistency. The lines are minimal and follow where the animals joints are, and only important parts are drawn.
You won't know what Important Parts means right off the bat, which is where in-depth study comes in. You need to do learn the hard parts to do the easy parts right.
Loki and Mobius sitting in a JET SKI sailing off into the sunset. Yes I am obsessed with this show and this pair. Yes I’m devastated that that this isn’t how the series ended… maybe next season lol
