I Don’t Know How to Fly Anymore

They whisper, "Fly." But my wings are stiff— not broken, just forgotten.

I was a songbird once, notes dripping from my throat like honey warmed by the sun. Now silence is my melody, and the bars are made of shoulds.

They say the door is open, but they don't see the chain— the invisible kind, the one forged from “Be nice.” “Don’t cry.” “You’re too much.” “You’re not enough.” “Be silence.”

I pace in this gilded quiet, wings brushing rust, chest full of feathers too heavy with doubt to rise.

I don’t know the wind anymore. I don’t know where joy lives. I chase the echo of a laugh that used to be mine.

They tell me, "Fly, bird. The sky is yours." But no one taught me how to rebuild a soul that forgot the shape of open air.

So I stay. Perched. Waiting. Not for rescue— but for remembrance. That I am not a prisoner. I am a phoenix in mourning. And even ash remembers fire.
