🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟(5/5) . Jeremy Narby, an anthropologist in the Peruvian Amazon, was invited to participate in an Ayahuasca ceremony and had a mind-opening experience. From this experience and his time amongst the Asháninka, he developed a hypothesis connecting the practices of shamanism to knowledge of molecular biology, one aspect of which connects the double-helix shape of DNA to the symbol of the life-giving, shape shifting serpent or dragon which permeates the mythology of cultures the world across. In his book, Narby describes his time in the Amazon, his subsequent research into the connection between the psychedelic experience and spirituality, and several little-known facts about the nature of the DNA molecule. This was a fascinating book to listen to, and I will be getting a physical copy for my personal library. 🌟🌟🌟🌟⭐(4/5) . How To Change Your Mind is a who’s who and what’s what of modern day psychedelic therapy and an exploration of the use of psychedelic substances to generate mystical experiences. Michael Pollan has spoken with many of the notable figures of 20th century psychedelic research, with a whole chapter dedicated to the time he spent with Paul Stamets getting to know the psilocybin mushroom. This book covers the history of psychedelic research in the United States, goes into the neuroscience of the ways that these substances interact with the brain, and even gives firsthand accounts of Pollan’s own experiences with psychedelic therapists who led him through sessions in his search for the elusive mystical experience (Pollan details experiences with LSD, Psilocybin, 5MeODMT, and Ayahuasca). This book tends to favor the academic side of the history of psychedelics, and does not provide a shamanic perspective or address the Acid Tests of Kesey or other such movements, but it is the perfect guide for those who know nothing or for those who are wondering if it is possible to have a life changing experience with entheogenic medicines. Trust and betrayal, pride and politics, the turning of a great wheel—The Left Hand of Darkness reads like a deepspace folk tale, an origin story whispered by mystics of the time when Winter overcame its own bitterness and learned to reach beyond the stars. I have never read anything quite like it. . I find myself turning the last page of this book fifty years after its initial publication, yet I feel refreshed. The world of Science Fiction has become cluttered with cliche and tangled in trope since 1969, but The Left Hand of Darkness is clearly among the progenitors of the genre. It is something like the experience of having seen a picture of a famous painting or landmark many times, and finally finding yourself in the presence of the real thing. Suddenly that which you had enjoyed and become familiar with in representation is more tangible, wrapped in the mystique of its own influence while existing close enough to touch. Where in other works of science fiction I have found the laborious construction of a world and an alien race a chore to familiarize myself with, Ursula K. LeGuin has created an immersive world too wide to take in, such that the experience of reading The Left Hand of Darkness is like coming upon a new culture, experiencing the shock of unfamiliarity, of otherness, and the slow assimilation into acceptance of the strangeness of a new place. Not your typical political space-thriller, this book presents a vision terrifying, grotesque, exhilarating, and deeply sensitive to the sense of what it is to be alive, to come to fear and travel through it. Through her characters, Ursula brings us to the brink of death and back from it with quite the tale to tell.
