Choice

When I look at the state of things,

I cannot help but to think

Of my body, lay bleeding

Staked on one desperate grab

At some semblance of freedom

I cannot help but feel

Somewhere down the line

A mistake, made in love

Will exchange ribbons on wrists

For cuffs cutting in behind my back

Or else back-alley dealings,

Instruments dirty and sharp

But I have no choice in the matter

You leave me no choice

For what is the risk of death,

In the face of a life held hostage?

Every breath with you

Awkward Silences

Silence spreads between us

A yawning chasm I’ve

Never had words to breach

Every one dead in my throat

Our shared history,

Clouded over dark and sore

A bruise-like patina,

Ugly over everything since

And we were both young

The blame isn’t at my feet

But yet I am not blameless

When you needed me, I was gone

Really, you were the elder

Stronger than I ever was

But maybe you needed me

To be strong for you too

But I wasn’t. And I’m sorry.

My hands itch to tell you,

My mouth stretches 

With my truth

But awkwardness settles

Ugly as any bruise

I’m hours and years too late

So I keep my counsel, silent

I’ve got worse than nothing

All I’ve got are useless skills

What use are words on a line

If they can’t pay the bills?

I’ve become an expert

In decoding rejections

Like sixty years ago

My B.A. is b.s.

In corporate lingo

First the bar was high

And it’s gotten even higher

Competing for a job

To see who’s the better liar

No one dreams of HR

Customer care’s not my passion

Searching for that ‘dream’

Only dreams aren’t in fashion

Job boards and forums

Blurring together in my eyes

It seems like the ‘real world’

Is where the dream dies
