The Rescue: BNHA X Fem! Reader-Gentleman crow
The rescue intro: here
"(Y/n) why don't you adopt one of the pets here? They deserve a good owner and you could use some company! A good pet is just the thing to make sure you're not lonely!"
You stared at her in surprise before considering. After all, what did you really have to lose? Besides, you couldn't deny that the thought was appealing. To come home to an apartment with some life in it, someone waiting just for you. Someone who relied on you and wouldn't leave. Someone who wouldn't judge you.
"Alright! I'll do it! But I'll need some help picking them out... I've never had a pet of my own before."
She grinned and grabbed your hand, holding Izuku with her other one.
"I have just the one for you!!"
You followed her out into the main room, trying to keep the excited woman in your sights amongst the tall shelves. You tried not to cringe as your shoes squeaked against the linoleum, having not dried fully from the snow that had caked them earlier. The snow was still coming down outside, blanketing the world in white.
The contrasting color is what drew you in. His inky black feathers against a backdrop of white were quite dramatic. You tilted your head, mirroring the crow's movement as he watched you right back. You stepped forward, Inko's chosen pet forgotten as you approached the bird in his cage.
"Well hello there, little one."
The crow bobbed his head at you, fluttering over to a perch closer to you.
"Well aren't you a pretty bird." you cooed softly to him, admiring his pretty black feathers.
He took that opportunity to tip his head downward and spread his wings outward in a bow.
Your face lit up in delight at the display, smiling widely.
"Pretty" came the rough voice of the crow.
"Well, what a little charmer! I didn't even know crows could speak!" You curtsied back to the crow, eagerly reciprocating his polite gesture.
"There you are!" Inko smiled as she rounded the corner.
"I was afraid I lost you there." She paused, having seen the animal that had captured your attention.
"I see you've found yourself a friend all on your own." She almost looked hesitant to point out the bird. A strange almost grimace crossed her face. Not that you were paying all that much attention.
You ignored her unease and continued to mimic the bird's movements, making delighted noises every time he copied you.
Atsuhiro himself was pleased with the company, seeing as how the shopkeeper was rightfully wary when around the villains turned animals. Seeing a new face was refreshing. Especially one as lovely as yours.
"Is this little guy available?" you looked back to Inko, your choice already made and visible in the hopefulness of your eyes.
How could she say no when you were already so obviously smitten with the charming animal?
She forced a smile on her face. "Of course! Let me just double-check some paperwork and we'll get that finalized for you. " She nodded to herself before bustling off again, leaving you with Atsuhiro.
Beaming, you pressed your face against the cage.
"You hear that, charmer? You may be coming home with me! I promise I'll take good care of you, pretty bird."
He bobbed up and down happily, before echoing back “home”. While Compress thought he got the better end of the stick when it came to animals to be transformed into, being on the cusp of communication made the few words he did manage all the more frustrating. Occasionally, he could get out a word by himself, but it was much easier to echo back the words and phrases spoken to him. Still, you seemed enchanted with the few words he was able to get out and that was good enough for right now.
You chatted away to him about your apartment and all the fun things you would get for him, waiting impatiently for Inko to return with the paperwork needed.
Compress himself was quite surprised that the green-haired woman would allow you to entertain the thought of taking him with you. He was, after all, a prominent member of the league of villains. Surely knowing what she did, she would never allow him to leave her watchful surveillance. He was beyond shocked when she rounded the corner with supplies and paper to sign.
You took the pen, scanning the document quickly as you twirled the pen between your fingers. You were honestly surprised how quickly you had latched onto the idea of taking Atsuhiro home with you, but you weren’t going to question the happiness bubbling up in your chest at the idea of not being alone again. You were going to be the best companion that bird had ever had.
“And…. Signed! We’re all set!” You triumphantly set the pen down, already eying supplies for your new companion.
Inko chuckled at your enthusiasm, gently taking the papers and tucking them into a folder.
“I’ll get the supplies in order. He’ll have to go in a crate for transportation, so go pick one out.”
Compress watched you hurry over to the other section, eyes tracking your movements as a thrill of hope started to course through him. He was actually going to be able to leave the shop! He could use this opportunity to escape and search for a cure for his current condition. He wondered as to the quirk of this new person, and how her abilities could help or hinder him. He could almost hear shigaraki fuming from his cage at this new escape opportunity. While they could communicate a little, the distance from cages made it difficult to form any plans. Likely at the behest of their jailer. Still, he would make the best of this opportunity to free himself and his comrades. But perhaps a little break from scheming first.
~~~~~o(`◇´)○~~~~~
Life in your apartment was more pleasant than Atsuhiro expected. He expected life in a cage, plotting his escape. What he got was so much better.
“Good morning, pretty bird. I have a treat for you.”
You hummed happily, offering him some apple you had cut up, gently scratching underneath his chin as he landed on your outstretched finger. The smooth black feathers were soft against your fingertips. His eyelids fluttered in delight at the gentle touch.
"Always so sweet, my dear ," he spoke, gently plucking the fruit from your grip."
"Yes, apples are really sweet. Would you prefer a more tart treat next time?" you questioned, going by the single word that passed the communication barrier.
Atsuhiro shook his head lightly in annoyance. So many moments lost in translation. Still, he was growing fond of you. You tried so hard to understand him even though in your eyes he was merely a black feathered bird brain.
You were so different from the people he was used to surrounding himself with. You were doting and kind. He gave himself leave to bask in the attention for now. He deserved a little bit of relaxation after all the time spent in a stupid pet store with both the heroes and his other league members. These past couple of weeks in your care were quickly becoming some of his fondest memories, not that he'd admit it. The little quirks that would have gotten you killed in the league's clutches simply endeared him to you further. You were kind and polite, treating him with courtesy, even though to your eyes he was an animal. He admired that in you but your softness was a weakness easily exploited. Or would be if he had his human form. For now, he was content to play the part of the silly pet as the cursed quirk kept him locked in this prison of feathers. Surely once he retained human form he would abandon you without a second thought in order to accomplish his goals
Or at least that's what he told himself when he found himself enjoying your attention and affection. The head kisses were certainly not growing on him, right?
~~~~~⋛⋋( ‘◇’)⋌⋚~~~~~
Atsuhiro perked up from his perch at an unfamiliar noise. You were yelling.
In the two months he had been living with you, he never heard your voice raised in anger. Certainly in frustration or pain such as when you had dropped a pan on your foot. But anger was a new emotion he had yet to see from you. Flying to the counter nearby, he watched you pace the length of the living room before whipping around and repeating the trek in the opposite direction, all attention drawn to the phone clasped to your ear.
You flexed the unoccupied hand, fingers gripping onto nothing but wishing to send the nearest object at the other member of the argument.
"Yes, yes, I know! I remember from the last time you called!" You paused, processing the words spit back.
"Are you kidding me?! This again? I'm not coming back! I was miserable. How can you-" You bit your lip, tears of frustration gathering and giving your fury a glassy sheen.
"Look, I'm happy here! Happier than I could ever be back there. I moved for a good reason. A fresh start! I'm doing well for myself. I've got a steady job and a nice apartment. Hell, I even have a pet!"
The voice on the other end gave you pause once more, the voice quiet but clipped, leaving no room for more argument.
The tears gathering suddenly gave way, creating twin trails down your flushed cheeks as the upset bubbled over.
"This conversation is over. I have to go take care of Atsuhiro, have a good night mom." You pressed the end call button before setting the phone on the coffee table with a clatter.
Compress watched as both anger and sadness flitted across your face in equal measure. It wasn't an expression he was used to seeing on you. It was beautiful but heartbreaking. It made his chest ache to see the tears sparkling on your anger flushed cheeks. Taking flight, he landed on the shelf near your shoulder, letting you notice his presence.
"Hey there charmer." You gently offered him your finger to step on and brought him close to you as he obeyed the silent gesture.
"Oh dear one, what are you crying over? Who hurt you?" He pressed his head against your chin, nuzzling against you to provide some comfort.
You gave a watery smile, stroking the downy feathers on his head.
"I'm okay buddy. Just a stupid argument with my mother. I'm alright."
Your voice wavered a little with emotion, but Atsuhiro was helping you to relax. His concern and comfort were like a soothing balm to the upset still stinging your eyes and tightening your throat.
You never questioned his intelligence but you were glad for it now more than ever. He was your shield from misery and made your bad feelings disappear as if by magic. He was all at once a comfort and a friend as well as the most important being in your life. You kissed the top of his head and sat on the couch, holding him close.
"Thank you, charmer. I don't know what I'd do without you."
That night was the catalyst for Atsuhiro. He didn't know it then, but he was going to do everything in his power to never see sorrow or anger on your face again if he could help it. You were his darling and he was determined to make you happy. The care he felt that night as he snuggled against you was foreign but not unpleasant and he would grow to crave it.
~~~~~♩⋛⋋(・◇・。)⋌⋚~~~~~
Atsuhiro never did get around to searching for ways to escape. He still longed for his human body though. While he enjoyed spending time as your bird, he hated how limited this form was. He wasn't able to speak to you, not properly that is. His rough bird call could only get out a couple of words if he focused. And never the ones he wanted which made communicating with you difficult. But you were patient with him and while you never truly understood him, you listened when he tried to talk. The number of times he tried to tell you he was human was discouraging. No matter how he tried, the words stuck in his throat, and what did escape was unintelligible. He missed his voice. He missed himself. While he was undeniably himself under all the feathers, there was so much he couldn't do now that was tied into his idea of who he was. Stripped of his quirk and his very identity. Still, if he was to spend forever in this body, at least he had you to care for and care for him in return.
At that moment, you were in the kitchen preparing dinner. You had the day off and had spent it watching Disney movies while cleaning and hanging out with him. You hummed softly to your playlist shooting compress a smile as he perched on the edge of the sink.
The song faded out as a love song took its place, gentle piano and trumpet floating through the kitchen as you focused on the ingredients on the counter. Atsuhiro watched as you began to lightly sway to the music, mumbling the lyrics to yourself as you seasoned the food.
Compress found himself entranced as the afternoon glow illuminated you in gold light. You were stunning in a way he had quietly thought about but never admitted to himself. The beautiful chords as the song progressed paired with your sweet voice made him stop and listen. Your voice washed over him with warmth and affection and at that moment, he wanted nothing more than to pull you into human arms and twirl you to the music. He allowed himself to imagine it.
He was human again and he pulled you to him, your eyes on his dark ones. Your hand perfectly fit in his as he twirled you to the music, pulling you against him so your back rested against his chest. He savored your warmth against him before twirling you once more, this time bringing you back to face him with his hand finding its place on your waist as he began to waltz you through the kitchen. You rested your head against his shoulder, humming to the music as he swayed you gently. As the music slowed to the end, he dipped you gracefully, getting lost in your soft loving expression. He memorized the look in your eyes and the soft smile only for him. He bent to close the distance, lips ghosting over yours...
He was pulled out of the daydream by the oven timer going off.
He gave a surprised squawk and nearly fell off his perch.
You giggled, the sound bringing him back to the present.
"You alright there, pretty bird? Get a bit distracted?"
His throat was dry and he ruffled his feathers in annoyance, trying to get his bearings back. He gave an indignant caw and flew out of the room, trying to distance himself from what he was feeling. He couldn't be falling for you, right? That would be impossible. But yet... He yearned to finish what he started in that daydream. He felt his nonexistent fingers tingle, his human form just out of reach but inaccessible. he had fallen for you without even realizing it himself.
~~~~~( ˘◇˘)~~~~~
Atsuhiro was acutely aware of his feelings now. He had to actively hold himself back from bristling when you talked about guys at work or an attractive actor when you watched tv together. It was made worse when you would poke fun at him with that cute smile and tell him he was the only man for you. Oh if only...
He looked up excitedly as he heard the lock click on the front door, fluttering to the entry table to greet you. He dipped into a low bow as you came in, making a chittery purring noise.
You grinned at the display, dipping your head back at him to imitate the bows. Compress always bowed in greeting to you, but this was more of a dance, especially while paired with the rattling call that dropped from his beak. It was a kind of clacking sound that he used when he was very happy. You had looked it up when he did it for the first time because you were concerned about it. Now, you could see that this was a harmless behavior.
"Awwww, are you flirting with me, pretty bird? Look at you all manners and coos."
"Oh my darling, give me a human form but once more and I'll show you flirting."
He shook his feathers so they puffed out. If crows could smirk, that very expression would adorn his face. How he loved teasing you and imagining your reactions if he had been human. Would you have blushed? Perhaps gain that bashful smile that you used when you got to a super romantic part in a book you were reading?
He made a soft chirping noise and hopped up your arm, settling beside your face and nuzzling against your neck.
"Such a hopeless romantic, my pretty girl." He sighed, relaxing into your touch as you began to stroke his head. "One day, one day I will be able to properly sweep you off your feet."
"Okay, okay charmer!" You giggled, petting him happily. "Now how about you settle down, hmm?"
You set him on your shoulder as you began to put away your work gear. Humming to yourself as you bustled around the apartment.
The cozy mood was broken by your cell phone going off. Compress watched with sadness as your happy mood evaporated upon seeing the caller ID.
You gave him an apologetic smile and set him on the living room counter before disappearing into your room to take the call.
He knew that when you emerged, you would be tired and upset from the constant needling from your family. While he wished he could tell them off for you, there was no way for him to help you in this form. All he could do was offer comfort and his presence once you had hung up.
This call pattern repeated for several days before the calls stopped coming. You seemed so much happier and freer than before. While he was pleased that you were doing better, the sudden lack of phone calls seemed odd to him. He kept that unease tucked away so he could enjoy spending time with you free of distractions.
You were happy to be off the hook but your hasty words to get your mother off your back would come back to bite you sooner rather than later.
A couple of weeks later saw you relaxing with Compress, feeding him berries while you watched the latest magic show you had found for him. He seemed especially excited for them, so you were quick to make it a tradition to watch them together. Your phone rang and you gave him a tight smile and disappeared to your bedroom.
Your words were subdued at first before they rose in volume and urgency.
After a moment of silence, the door to your room swept open. Atsuhiro glanced up to see you a whirlwind of anxious energy.
"They're early! How can they be early?" You were muttering, pacing frantically your face awash in frightened and upset expressions. You paced and then looked around the apartment frantically before beginning to fidget and clean, picking things up and setting them back down as you panicked.
"They said they'd be here in a couple of hours! And they could be here any time now... Oh, oh this isn't good."
You slumped onto the couch with a frustrated groan, hands going up to rub at your eyes.
Atsuhiro fluttered over and perched on your shoulder, nuzzling his small head against your chin, trying to comfort you as best he could.
"Now what's bothering you, my darling?" he asked, hoping his intent shone through the one word he was able to get out.
He cawed quietly, gently pressing his beak against your neck so you paid him more attention.
" I messed up,” You said, stroking the feathers on his head with one of your fingers, the soft texture relaxing you slightly. “My parents are coming to town. They said they wanted to meet my boyfriend. They wouldn't leave me alone about coming back home and how stupid it was to be living alone in a different country, so I had made an imaginary boyfriend to shut them up! It was easy to ignore and make up excuses before…” you swallowed nervously and pressed a kiss to the crow’s head.
“Well… they want to meet him. But this time, they flew here to make sure I couldn’t avoid them.”
Compress made a low sympathetic noise, eased from the slight burn of jealousy at your imaginary boyfriend. This was certainly a dilemma you had woven for yourself. From what he'd overheard over the phone calls, your parents were not going to take no for an answer. They didn't approve of your choices but still felt like they could control your life even in another country. And now they were coming to visit and catch you in your lie. This was not going to be pretty. The misery you exuded was almost palpable. He offered what little comfort he could as you cried quietly, uncertain how you were going to fix this.
~~~~~⋋( ◕ ◇ ◕ )⋌~~~~~
It wasn't long before the dreaded guests arrived. You did your best to remain calm and deflect their questions, watching their reactions with thinly veiled distress.
"I wasn't expecting you so soon. If I had known you were coming I would have spruced the place up more and ensured my love would be home. He's at work at the moment."
Your mother furrowed her eyebrows, not impressed with your excuse.
"Oh? And what does he do? You never did tell us much about this mystery man of yours."
You swallowed nervously.
"He's uh, he's a local hero. Not very popular yet so you won't have heard of him." You flashed a bright smile that bordered on painful.
Atsuhiro couldn't bear to watch you flounder, wishing there was something he could do to help. A strange burning sensation traveled through him as his anxiety for you grew. He could tell that the longer this went on the more upset you became. Your lie was unraveling before your eyes and so too was the peace you had made for yourself in your home in Japan.
As much as he longed to comfort you, he could do nothing to help.
"What a quaint little apartment. Did your boyfriend help you get it? You say he's a hero. If he's not well known, how can he afford to take care of you?"
The questions and tension were getting to you. As your mother questioned every little detail you gave her, digging you further into the hole of the lie you told. You barely registered Atsuhiro flying into your bedroom. You were glad at least one of you would be able to escape the interrogation.
Unbeknownst to you, Compress was facing some discomfort of his own.
Atsuhiro felt an almost bubbly feeling envelop him. Liquid light flowed through his veins, tingles spreading all over him. The sensation was just bordering on unbearable before it all stopped. He sucked in a deep breath eyes snapping open to a view much different than the one he had just had.
It was with awe that he realized his human form had been returned to him. Flexing his fingers, he carefully brought them up to his face, feeling the smooth texture of skin instead of feathers. He was human once more. And, judging by the draft that assaulted him, he was also naked. He stood, carefully getting used to his longer limbs and the balance that had to be relearned.
He cautiously focused, summoning up his quirk. All these months without it had grated on him. Having so much disappear from his grasp in the span of one day had been a horrible experience. He gasped raggedly as the coin he’d found on the floor suddenly was replaced with a shining blue sphere.
He would have laughed out loud if not for the sudden reminder of where he was. The muffled conversation could be heard from the adjacent room, your voice sounding anxious and uncomfortable.
He focused and drew up one of his marbles. A gross practice, but useful nonetheless. Luckily, he always had a spare change of clothes compressed should he need to do a quick change and throw his enemies off his trail. This served him well as he rapidly decompressed it and pulled it on. He couldn’t meet your parents in the nude, after all, what kind of impression would that send? Besides, as confident as he was, he’d rather meet you in his human form with an appearance befit of a gentleman.
He tousled his hair, reluctantly leaving his mask and balaclava behind as he approached the door. His hand hesitated over the knob for a brief moment before he opened the door.
“Ah, darling!,” he strode into the room, taking in your shocked expression before sitting beside you and taking your hand offering a wink before facing your parents, “ Sorry about being late, I had wanted to surprise you, but it appears you were expecting company.” He offered his hand to your parents.
“Sorry for the intrusion. You must be (Y/N)’s parents.”
You continued to watch the stranger in absolute disbelief. Not only was this strange man inviting himself into your home, but he was also charming your parents into believing your lie, which you were quite certain he had no reason for knowing in the first place.
You let him talk for a while, trying to get your bearings. The idea of letting the ruse continue was very tempting, but you were also slightly terrified. Who on earth was this man?
Compress noticed your discomfort, and without missing a beat squeezed your hand lightly in reassurance. His thumb smoothed over your knuckles and you began to debate if he had some kind of calming quirk as you felt some of the tension leave you, but you quickly dismissed that thought at the remembrance of your own canceling quirk.
“I’m dreadfully sorry to ask this after you’ve come all this way, but might I steal (Y/N) away for a moment? I do believe my coming in unannounced after my absence as well as the influx of family has quite overwhelmed her. I merely ask for a moment of her time in private.”
Compress smiled sincerely at your parents as he asked, shooting you a concerned and pitying look. Your parents, already enamored with him, nodded their agreement. They declared that they still needed to go check into their hotel, so they would leave you both to reconnect.
As soon as the front door swung closed, Compress was facing you and fussing over you.
“Oh darling, I’m terribly sorry for startling you so.”
You put up a hand to slow any more fretting questions.
“Let me make this clear, I have my phone primed to call the police, so you’re going to cooperate and tell me what’s going on right now, you hear me?”
Shock filled his face before a wide grin took its place.
“Ah, darling, how I love your fire, what a joy to experience it firsthand.” He swept off his hat and bowed to you.
“Very well, my dear. My name is Mr.compress, however…” He looked up at you, taking your free hand and pressing a soft kiss to your knuckles, “You may know me as Atsuhiro, or would you prefer a more personal moniker?”
He quirked an eyebrow, mischief shooting across his face as he straightened.
“ I do recall you seemed fond of calling me ‘charmer' and 'pretty bird’, though the phrase only partially fits now…"
You watched, mouth agape as you began connecting the insane dots.
“That’s a pretty poor joke, stalker boy.” You grit out, suddenly angry at his cocky attitude.
Compress paused, expression softening.
“I do assure you, my dear (Y/N), what you’re considering is possible, and was what occurred. I will answer any question you have, for I would do anything to ease the mind of my beloved.”
“Beloved? Sir, what you’re implying is insane. You’re trying to tell me, that you were my bird for the better part of a year? That call button is looking very tempting at this point.”
“Ask me anything, and I will answer to the best of my abilities. I assure you, I would not lie to you, of all people. After all, it is you who saved me time and again, you were the one who rescued me from that pet shop after all. You enchanted me on that first meeting, curtsying to a simple crow, how charming.”
You pulled your hand away from your phone at that last couple of words. How did he know about your meeting with your beloved pet? Sure, many could guess where you got your bird, but no one except Inko would have known about your first interaction.
“If you’re my pet, then how are you human now? That should not be possible.”
Compress chuckled, although the laugh did not hold much mirth.
“That was the result of an unfortunate quirk accident. On an outing, I crossed paths with the caster and he was affected by a new quirk-enhancing drug. Caught in the crossfire with him and the heroes, I was struck with the unpredictable quirk.”
You didn’t notice you had relaxed next to him, listening intently.
“And that turned you into an animal? Why didn’t it wear off sooner?”
“Now that, my dear, is the question! Why now?”
He sat beside you, excitement beginning to build as he broached his theory to you.
“I believe it’s all because of you. In my time in your home, I have come to care deeply about you.”
Your cheeks darkened at the casualness of his confession. While you knew him as a bird, seeing Atsuhiro as a human, and a very attractive one at that, made the statement all the more flustering. It didn’t help that he chose that moment to gently tilt your chin up with his thumb and forefinger.
“And that care, that love, was what made it possible to shift back. I noticed your earlier distress, and would have done anything if I could comfort or fix it for you.” He grinned, “My being human, would have been able to help the woman I love. And thus… I was able to come back to my true form.”
You melted a little in his grip as you stared into his brown eyes, overwhelmed, but also charmed. He seemed to love you… and his story didn’t seem as far-fetched as you would have originally thought. Still, it would take some time.
You firmly took his wrists, holding them in place as he moved his grip to cup your cheeks, thumbs lightly brushing your cheekbones.
“Alright, say I believe this story… It doesn’t change the fact that I only know you as a bird. If this is to work, we’re going to have to go on some dates. I need to know about Atsuhiro the man, not the bird.”
He grinned and kissed your forehead.
“I'd be absolutely delighted”
You let yourself smile, leaning into his touch. This could work. While this was a new experience for you, there was magically no doubt that you would easily fall in love with this fascinating man.
The Rescue: BNHA x Fem! Reader- Red Pitbull
the rescue intro: here
Inko led you through the store, only pausing to put Izuku back into his habitat. You followed her through the aisles of the shop, hearing the barking from the next room growing louder as you neared the door.
Inside was a wide variety of dogs. The shop was deceptively big considering its unassuming exterior. The Large room was a playroom of sorts. Almost a greeting room so people could meet the dogs in a fun and comfortable environment.
Your eyes tracked the movements of the dogs closest to you, searching for your potential new friend. There was a wide variety of dogs from young to old. Each had their own fun personality and you mused that you'd be happy taking any one of the furballs home. That is... Until you saw Enji.
You had never really been afraid of dogs, but this one... He was intimidating.
Pitbulls never really intimidated you. There were too many good ones out there for their reputation to bother you. This one however was scary looking. You didn't want to judge him right away, but he was every scary pitbull stereotype rolled into one. Rusty red fur covered the dog in patterns reminiscent of flames. White patches reinforced the flame look, snaking up his chest and up his paws like little fire boots. What caught your eyes the most was his eyes. Teal was not a color you had ever seen on a dog before, and on him, they were piercing, like the hottest center of a flame. There was an intelligence there that made you wary. Smart dogs were a handful and from the way he was looking at you and Inko, it seemed he had already made up his mind on you. His expression was pinched into as close to a scowl as his facial patterns would allow, white splotches on the ridges of his head forming eyebrows that gave the illusion of a glare.
You hoped against it, but as soon as you saw him, you knew he was the animal for you. Inko's leading grip on your wrist confirmed your suspicion, only loosening once you both stood before the muscular dog.
"(y/n), It's my pleasure to introduce you to Enji. Enji, this is (y/n). She's agreed to talk care of one of our residents here."
You watched the exchange, noting how his eyes fixed on her, his scowl deepening as she spoke. You couldn't help the giggle that slipped free, his expression was just so serious for a dog!
He whipped his head around to look at you, that ridiculous scowl still in place. He was trying his best to look intimidating and powerful, but the effect was ruined by the fact that he wasn't human. Had he been as he was before the quirk cursed him, Enji Todoroki would have been a fierce sight to behold. But now he simply looked like a pouting child throwing a tantrum, the scowl not translating right over the switch of species. His usual cold and intimidating demeanor were overshadowed by the fact that he was now just a little under two feet tall.
He watched you try to stifle your laughter, your form shaking with the effort as his expression got more and more exasperated. This was who he was expected to put up with for the rest of his time in this form? As the former number two hero, he was less than impressed. He gave a disgruntled bark, looking at Inko to ask if she was serious, but the look she gave him halted him in his tracks.
Endeavor had dealt with many villains over his hero career, but few held the kind of authority as a mother figure. She radiated sternness and he quickly understood that in this case, her word was law. She left the decision in your hands rather than his paws.
When he looked back at you, you had composed yourself again, a wide grin in the place of the wary expression you had carried upon seeing him for the first time.
"You really believe he's the one for me, Inko?" You tilted your head, examing the rather put-out-looking dog, surprising yourself with the hope that Inko would say yes. Sure he was intimidating, but that silly scowl made you smile. And pit bulls were hard to place, so it was a toss-up if he would ever get a chance like this again. You resonated with that more than you'd like to admit. Maybe it was your savior complex, but if you could help him, you wanted to. He deserved a chance.
The little fluttering hope in your chest flared happily when Inko nodded.
"I think you two will be good for each other. I trust you with him and think it's for the best."
with these words from Inko, Enji's scowl fell with a resigned huff. This would be a definite change, one he wasn't likely to enjoy. However, you were excited, and perhaps he could work with that.
You smiled softly and reached down to ruffle his ears. He was surprised by the touch but more so by the fact that it was a pleasant sensation. He quickly pulled out of your grip to grumpily sit with his back to you. He wasn't going to let you win him over so easily. He was originally the number two hero after all! His resolve was stronger than that, surely, he thought to himself.
He watched you move away to help Inko gather supplies, eyes following your every movement. You had seemed frightened at first, so he couldn't wrap his head around why you had accepted Inko's proposal. You were baffling to him, and he was determined to untangle the puzzle that was you.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Enji was confusing. He was so grumpy and far too much of a snob for a dog. You figured he was a rescue at this point. He refused to eat regular dog food, refused to sleep anywhere but a proper bed, and was intent on getting his way at all times. It was exhausting. There was a point when you almost returned him the first week, but it was also the point where you realized you didn't want him to go.
You had been walking him when a criminal attack happened just across the street. You watched in mute horror as a villain used their quirk to ransack a storefront, likely after the money in the register. You quickly turned your back on the sound of breaking glass only after affirming that someone was calling authorities. This was no place for a civilian to interfere. Enji, did not think the same way. He was tugging ferociously against the walking harness.
"Enji! We need to go, stop this!"
You tried to reign him in, but he just pulled all the harder, the woven material of the leash digging into your hands as your white knuckle grip was tested against the dog. It was a miracle he didn't pull you off your feet.
You fought against his weight to pull him away from the scene all while he barked and fought against you. Finally, you were able to pull him around a corner and away from the violence. Enji was not pleased to say the least.
How dare she, he thought, glaring at you, with as much anger as he could muster. Who were you to keep him from hero work? He growled lowly in his throat at you. He knew that if he were in his human form, his flames would be flickering dangerously.
"Now you stop that right now. We are going home, Enji. Now." You glared back, annoyed and if you were honest, a bit shaken by the event.
He turned around as if to go back, but was stopped by a sharp tug on the lead.
"No, bad dog. Heel. We are going home. You need to listen to me."
You pressed your lips into a firm line, doing your best to be as authoritative as you could, hoping he would see this as a fight not worth having. Oh, how wrong you were. With each insistent tug on the leash, he grew more irritated. It all culminated in one moment where his temper got the best of him. He wasn't used to being ordered around and he lashed out in the only way he could in this form. He bit your hand, aiming to get you to drop the leash so he could go without you.
You yelped sharply in pain, pulling the limb to your chest protectively, the leash forgotten on the ground. Your eyes held him in place, eyes watery with unshed tears as you looked at him in hurt disbelief. He hadn't bitten hard enough to break skin, but that did not mean you were unscathed. Angry red welts were beginning to form where his teeth had dug and scraped.
Enji felt guilt forming in the pit of his stomach, something he was not used to. The look of betrayal you were giving him made him feel off-kilter. However, he wasn't going to dwell on it
You bit your lip to keep the tears at bay before grabbing the leash off the ground with your good hand, keeping your eyes on him the whole time, watching for any sign he would attack again. Your movements were slow, cautious, and untrusting. backing up, you held the leash so the most distance was between you.
"Enji, we are going home. Now." You tried to keep your voice stern, but you winced as you heard the small warble to it from pain. He locked his limbs as the leash went taut once more. Before you could react, he grabbed the leash in his teeth and yanked it out of your hands, and raced back towards the action.
You stumbled after him, his name dying on your tongue as he stopped right in front of the villain, powerful jaws locking around the criminal's leg. It's like the scene was in slow motion for you as Enji faced the villain alone.
He dug his teeth in, determined to defeat the criminal despite his lack of quirk or usual form. His arrogance knew no bounds, but as far as he was concerned, he was just doing his job. Oh, how out of his depth he was.
The villain in question was named deathstalker. Upon one glance it would be easy to guess his quirk. Extending from his back, a tan appendage loomed above him, curled to a dangerous spike. Venom tipped and massive, the scorpion tail was a sight to behold. And right now... it was poised to strike at your dog.
Before you even knew what you were doing, your feet were tearing across the pavement. Your lungs burned with each panicked breath you sucked in, watching as the villain flung Enji away with an angry roar. You changed course to intercept him, flinging yourself over the dazed mutt just as the point of the tail struck, stabbing into your shoulder with a sickening speed.
Deathstalker had the nerve to laugh then, watching as you skidded sideways on the street, shoulder bloody and arms scrapped from your landing, but dog safely clutched to your chest.
"What are you, some kind of idiot?"
Stalking forward, he nudged your shoulder with his foot, eliciting a cry of pain as your shoulder burned.
"Hope you're proud darling, you just died for an exceptionally stupid dog."
He sneered, watching as Enji tried to wiggle free and get at him.
"Looks like he still has a death wish. What do you say, dear, shall I end his life too so he can join his dear old master? After all, he seemed pretty determined in the first place. All you did was buy him time to watch you suffer too."
He smirked and crouched next to you, his golden irises standing out against black sclera as they scanned the wound on your shoulder and shredded sleeves.
"You know sweetheart, he was going to die anyway. The stupid mutt bit me. And here I was having such a good day."
You fought the dizziness as the venom worked its way through your body, the wound radiating uncomfortable heat. You managed to look him right in those unnerving eyes, making eye contact before you took a deep breath. He might have been preparing for you to beg or plead for your life, ask for some reassurance that you weren't going to die. Instead, you inhaled before spitting in his face, eyes narrowed in anger.
Before the Deathstalker could respond, he was suspended in a forcefield as heroes dropped onto the scene. He beat angrily against his new prison as the heroes gathered around and began helping civilians.
You finally released your death grip on Enji, all the adrenaline draining out of you as the villain was moved away. You closed your eyes, not having the energy to do much but lay there.
Enji was instantly in your face as soon as he was free, examining you as best he could as he swore under his breath. All you heard was grumbling and growling from him as you lazily offered him your hand.
"I'm okay, boy. It's okay now..." Your head was fuzzy, but you weren't too concerned about that.
Enji growled at your words, knowing that Deathstalker would not have lied about the deadliness of his quirk. You needed medical attention now! He pressed himself against your side and barked, alerting the heroes to your position. He was furious, both with you and with himself, but mostly at the villain. But the anger boiling up would have to wait. He growled lowly as one of the heroes tried to shoo him away, determined to stay by your side as you were tended to. He had already failed once today, he wanted to be sure you were cared for now. Each moment you weren't seen to was one more moment that you were in danger. A danger that you had been in because of him.
You were put on a stretcher and loaded into an ambulance, Enji right by your side. He didn't usually stay with civilians after a fight, but with you, he didn't want to let you out of his sight. You were a stupid girl, charging in after him. But you had saved his life. And that rattled him.
~~~~~
You groaned as you awoke, hands going to scrub at your eyes after you were blinded by the white of the hospital room. As you sat and got your bearings, the events of before rushed back to you. The villain, your shoulder, and...
"Enji!"
Your eyes widened and you frantically tried to get out of bed, the heart rate monitor going wild behind you. Luckily, a bark stopped you in your tracks. Enji had been resting to the side of your bed, not having left your side if he could help it.
Upon seeing your concern, he jumped up against the bed, front paws resting on the mattress as he scanned you to see if you were truly recovered.
Once you saw the familiar red furry head, you relaxed, a wide smile spreading across your face.
"Hey buddy, you doing okay?"
He snorted. This was coming from the girl in the hospital bed? He was fine. A little bruised from the landing, but no worse for the wear.
"You're alright? Good. Never do that again. I have half a mind to take you back to Inko for that stunt." You frowned at him for a moment before your face softened into fondness. You reached out and cupped the side of his face, thumb gently stroking the side of his head.
"You really scared me, you know? I was so worried I'd lose you."
He let himself lean into your touch, telling himself it was for your comfort, and not because he enjoyed the sensation. He watched your expression carefully, surprised by the concern and relief he found there. You truly did not regret throwing yourself into danger for him. For getting hurt for him.
"That was a stupid thing for you to do too," he said, the voice escaping him a soft bark and whine instead of the words he wished to convey.
"I'm okay Enji, really," You smiled and leaned forward, placing a kiss on his head. "My quirk protected me for the most part. Someone else's quirk can't kill me."
He tilted his head to the side, confused by your statement. The injury had seemed pretty serious to him.
"My quirk neutralizes anything deadly that comes in contact with me. Sharp objects? Those can hurt me. But the venom probably became relatively harmless after he got me. It made me dizzy and uncomfortable, but it wouldn't kill me." You sighed, scrunching your face in displeasure when you remembered the side effects of the venom.
"I'm just glad I was able to keep you safe until heroes got there."
You leaned forward and whispered to him in a conspiratorial voice.
"Ready to get out of here? Because there's no way I'm gonna stick around while doctors lecture me about being careless and compliment my stupid quirk."
You grinned as you pulled back and carefully climbed out of bed, ensuring that you weren't pulling on your IV before petting his head and leading him for the door.
~~~~
It had been a few days since the incident, and Enji was starting to worry you. He was originally very pushy and confident. Determined to get his way. Now though, he was quiet and contemplative around you, no longer pushing for his way all the time. You'd never entertained the thought before, but now desperate times called for desperate measures. You were having an intervention for your dog.
That day, you got home from work, the usual tiredness pushed away by determination. Enji could see the difference and was decidedly curious. What had gotten you so worked up? It can't have been any villains as you seemed no worse for the wear. He mused that perhaps you were finally going to get another job. The one you were working at was clearly taking advantage of your good nature and hard-working spirit. Or perhaps the neighbor had finally asked you out. He snorted at the thought, amused but also a bit annoyed. His thoughts were cut short when you dropped into a sitting position right in front of him.
"Enji, you're a smart boy. I want you to listen to me."
You focused on him intently, watching as he squared his shoulders and focused on you, face all hard lines and serious fire in his eyes.
"You've been different. Ever since the villain attack, you've been treating me like glass. You're quiet, accommodating. It's weird. "
You frowned slightly.
"I want my old Enji back. You were a pain, but you were my pain. You were arrogant, sure of yourself. "
He eyed you carefully, admitting to himself that he had grown cautious around you since the attack. He knew that quirks couldn't cause lasting damage, but he wasn't going to throw your sacrifice back in your face. He respected you now. Still, you were asking for friendship, not reverence.
He was used to power being the only way to get things. Yet here you were asking for something else from him. You didn't want him to submit to you, but rather be himself as your companion. A confusing proposition, but... not one he was opposed to. He had already seen how selfless and strong you were. Perhaps he could enjoy learning more about you without the formalities he was used to.
"Hey, space cadet. Did you hear me?" You narrowed your eyes at Enji as he focused back from his thoughts. "Man, what am I doing?" You rubbed your eyes with the heels of your palms, "I must be crazy at this point."
You brought the appendages down as you heard an amused huff escape from Enji.
"Are you laughing at me now?"
You could have sworn he smirked as he barked an affirmative.
"is that so, furball?" You grinned and lunged forward, raking your fingers through his fur.
The sensation startled him and he jumped away. Oh, so that's how you wanted to play... He could oblige.
Your eyes widened as he turned back and came at you. You quickly curled up to protect yourself, squeaking as his cold nose came in contact with your side. He growled playfully and pawed at you, trying to get past your defenses.
You giggled, squirming as you tried to evade him.
"Wait, stop!"
He grinned. "You started this! Don't make this easy for me now."
You launched a sneak attack, curling your body around his head, laughing as you wrestled him to the ground and attacked him with tickles.
"I got ya! I Win!"
He managed to wriggle free eventually and lay beside you, panting, but content.
"Fine, fine, you win. Little ember. And I'll remember your words. No need to treat you carefully from now on." He rested his head on his paws as you lay beside him, face flushed from laughter as you caught your breath.
Who knew Enji had a playful side to him. Perhaps Inko had been right. You were good for each other.
Now you had your pushy bad-tempered pit bull back, and you were going to enjoy it.
~~~~
Enji proved to be a bit of a jerk, but you had softened him up. He Was constantly pushing your buttons. He was in your space constantly, making sure you knew his opinions on everything. But you fought back. He knew better than to mess with you and knew you wouldn't take his bad behavior. You were determined not to let his bad behavior continue. You simply left the room if he lost his temper, and you didn't tolerate resorting to violence. He learned quickly if he wanted to get anywhere with you, he had to be calm.
He began to look forward to your company, the bickering one-sided on your end, but for him, it was exciting. You refused to back down from him and he realized he wouldn't have it any other way. Still, he did enjoy antagonizing you.
"Enji, move your fluffy butt! I have to go to work!" You struggled uselessly against him as he pinned you to the couch with his bulk. His response to your plea was to grumble and relax even further.
"You big galoot, I have to go make money, or would you rather I not feed you?" He huffed and stretched before leisurely climbing off the couch. You rolled your eyes and ruffled his ears and hopped up, brushing red fur off your uniform.
Despite the playful threat, the money issue was worrying you. Enji was a big dog, and you only wanted the best for him. That meant that he had plenty of toys, good quality food, and all the love and affection you could spare. However, money was starting to run tight. You had started to work extra hours as the weather started to get colder.
You bid Enji farewell and left for work, determined to keep up the cheerful appearance.
Enji was left to his own devices while you left. Something he was growing less and less content with. It was fun messing with you, and you didn't take any of his stubbornness. He patrolled the house, working through a training regimen he had perfected for this form. He missed his human form, but being with you made it easier. He was far too intimidating as a human. As a dog, you joked with him, teased him, coddled him, and weren't afraid to let him know when he messed up. He still cringed to think of those first weeks where he had acted like he was still the number two hero. A hero doesn't hurt innocent people, as you had shown him.
He paused by the window, noting the snowflakes coming down from the sky. It was times like these, he remembered Rei. He had been focused on the power he could gain from a union with her when he had married her. She had given him twins, but he knew that she would have moved on by now. He didn't blame her in the slightest. Still, he knew that if he ever came back to her, he'd be a different man. But he knew that he couldn't love her, not truly. The marriage was one of greed, and she would always resent him for that, and he wouldn't be able to blame her. Still, he regretted not being able to offer her his apologies in person.
Watching the snowflakes, he remembered with sharp discomfort that he had been in this form for almost a year now. How the media explained his absence was a mystery and he had tried not to focus on what he had lost. He shook himself out of his thoughts and continued his routine, making sure the apartment was in order before taking the latch of the window with his teeth and pulling it open.
He eased out the window with practiced ease and began a patrol of the area. While he admitted he couldn't be much help in this form, he still couldn't completely give up his hero work. Keeping the apartment complex safe wasn't much, but he had someone to protect here. He had memorized your schedule and noticed that you had been getting out later, so he knew he'd be able to make another circuit before he returned to greet you for the evening.
He stayed out for a couple of hours but was forced to return early as the weather worsened. The gently floating snowflakes from earlier had turned into a whirling blizzard, the icy wind biting into his small form as he made his way home. Pulling the window closed behind him, he was glad for the minimal warmth the apartment offered. One of the things he noticed in this form was the absence of heat his quirk had provided him. He quickly began to regret his foray into the winter weather as his paws ached with cold from the ice-packed into them from his dash home in the inclement weather. He closed the window as best as he could, frowning to himself as it didn't shut properly. Unfortunately, without thumbs, he couldn't fix it, so he resorted to huddling into your blankets, buried under sheets and your stupid allmight themed comforter. One that he had conveniently chewed the face off of.
In his blanket fortress, he found himself dozing, surrounded by the scent of your body wash and detergent. It was a comforting scent and he quickly fell asleep, unaware of whistling wind pushing the window open where the latch had failed to close when he returned.
~~~
Enji dreamed of being human again. He flexed his fingers experimentally, testing the sensation, one he hadn't felt in a long time. He examined his surroundings carefully, the change in perspective disorienting. It was your apartment, but it looked older, the carpet worn and more decorations faded. He picked up one of the dog toys on the floor, marveling at the difference from just earlier that day when you had encouraged him to play with it. Had that been today? It felt like a lifetime away, as dreams never do seem to keep the passage of time constant.
He set the toy down at the sound of the door, eyes widening as they caught on your form. You were shorter than him now. Considering he was 6'4" in this form, it shouldn't have surprised him. But still, it was strange looking down on you. You rolled your eyes with a playful smile and started to put your things away.
"Enji, darling, close your mouth. You'll catch flies like that." He could hear the laughter in your voice as you teased him. Darling? He hadn't heard you use that word for him before. He found he liked the way it sounded from you. Especially if it was reserved for him.
He cleared his throat and stepped forward, helping you remove your coat. His heart caught in his throat when you looked back at him with fondness. He was usually so sure of himself. But this change was strange and he found himself flustered.
"You're so quiet today, hothead." You raised an eyebrow and placed your hands on your hips eyeing him as if he was a puzzle you had most of the pieces of but were having trouble placing the last ones.
"What's wrong? Did you break something while I was out?" You gasped and pointed a finger at him accusingly. "Did you try to get rid of my Allmight stuff again? I swear Enji, I will kill you if you did."
This was too strange to be real, he told himself, watching you silently as you began muttering to yourself and throwing him confused looks. This scenario was too good to be true. He knew this deep down, but he desperately wanted it to be real. He knew he had begun to grow feelings for you, but to have them returned like this felt too alien. He instinctively knew that something was off, but he wanted to pretend, just for a little longer.
He caught your hand mid gesture and placed a gentle kiss to your fingers, a small smirk forming at your flustered silence.
"Quiet yourself little ember. I haven't done anything to your stupid merchandise."
You huffed and pulled your hand from his grip, cheeks red.
"Well then why were you so quiet, dummy?"
He tilted his head lightly, a smile forming on his lips as he stared at you, enjoying the way you refused to meet his eyes a slight pout turning your lips down.
"I missed you," he murmured, gently tilting your chin up so you were looking at him once more.
You melted against him, leaning into his touch, gently holding pressing his hand against your face with your own. He noticed with a start that your hands were cold against his. Your face too. He frowned as you shivered against his palm, eyes opening to reveal crystals forming on your lashes. The color began to drain from your face, lips going blue as you stepped away from him.
He reached towards you, but your skin stung like frost burn against his touch. He desperately tried to pull you close to him, to heat you with his quirk, but he was no longer warm himself. Your skin grew silver and icy as you tried to push him away. His vocal cords were frozen, a cold lump in his throat that refused to form your name. He was forced to watch in terror as you went see-through, body made of ice. And then you crumbled beneath his touch, ice forming cracks, and your eyes met his one last time before you shattered into glittering crystalline ice shards before him.
He woke with a start, paws flailing in panic as he was roused by a loud noise. But it wasn't ice cracking he heard, but the front door striking the wall. slipping out from the blankets, he made his way through the thin powder of snow on the floor from the open window, hurrying to the living room to meet you and make sure you were okay.
The sight that met his eyes was straight out of his dream turned nightmare. You were shivering with cold, clothes clinging to you with ice forming at the folds. Your eyelashes were dusted with snowflakes, and your face was flushed with cold.
Enji whimpered, rushing forward to examine you. You gently shooed him away, not having the energy to be more strict. The freak blizzard struck on your way home from work. As you journeyed through the snow, you had tripped. You had attempted to steady yourself against a tree, but that only caused an avalanche of the cold snow to our down on you from above, soaking you thoroughly. You had hoped to warm up when you came home, but it was just as cold inside as it was outside. The window Enji had failed to close causing the winter chill to follow you inside.
You cursed and desperately removed your soaked jacket, hanging it up before stumbling to the bathroom. A strangled sound of dispair escaped your lips as the faucets failed to work. It seems the pipes had frozen. To top it all off, the lightbulbs flicked before plunging the room into darkness. The power had been knocked out. You were out of options to warm up. You staggered out of the dark room and worked to close the window. Enji trailed behind you, his fear growing as began to look more and more like the icy girl within his dream.
Peeling your wet clothes from your body was a difficult task while you were shaking. While you struggled with the buttons, Enji rushed to your dresser, dragging out the warmest clothes he could find. He left them by your side before sitting against your legs, offering as much warmth as he could with his body, as there wasn't much else he could do. He could hear your teeth chattering now, the sharp sound deafening to him. You changed as quickly as your cold temperature allowed and crawled into your blankets.
"Enji! Up." You patted the bed urgently, holding the blanket up for him to join you.
He curled up against your side, resting his head against your chest, hoping to provide heat to your vital organs. He whimpered against your cold skin, eyes searching your face with concern. This wasn't good. He hadn't been able to save you in his nightmare, and now he was worried he was going to lose you in real life as well.
You closed your eyes and shushed him, holding him close.
"It'll be okay Enji. Just try to conserve your energy. We'll be okay."
You reassured him, but you weren't so certain. With no heating, freezing temperatures, and an already chilled body, you weren't too sure what would happen next. Still, you had Enji and that meant that you'd give him everything you could. What little body heat you had was his.
You tried to fight off sleep, knowing that you weren't supposed to rest when you were freezing. Or was that with concussions? You didn't remember. You were tired, your body shaking with cold. Enji's whimpers were a near-constant sound now. His distress worried you, but you couldn't do more than try to keep him warm at this point.
You were hovering on the edge of sleep when it happened. A quiet pop sound came from nearby and you were vaguely aware of heat beginning to surround you. The blankets were removed and a heavy weight settled around your waist, warming you with an almost uncomfortable heat. You settled into it, wondering if you were reaching hypothermia. They said that once you got really bad, your mind started tricking you into believing you were hot while you froze. Oh well, so long as Enji was warm too.
Enji Cradled you close to his chest. He hadn't been prepared for the switch from dog to human, but he was beyond grateful for it. He had quickly moved you from the bed so as not to set fire to the covers as he activated his quirk. He cradled you against his chest, tucking your head against his neck, resting his chin on the top of your head as he let his quirk dance across his body at a low level.
"Hold on, little ember, you're going to be okay. Just hold on." Enji stroked his thumb against your arm, holding you close as he carefully upped the temperature slowly. He stayed awake well into the night monitoring your condition. He mentally thanked UA for their first aid and rescue classes, knowing that without them, he might have hurt you more than help.
He gently cared for you well into the night, too concerned about you to enjoy the feeling of you in his arms.
~~~~
You woke to a beam of sunlight cascading from your bedroom window. You didn't open your eyes though, you were too comfortable. You felt warm and content. However, the gentle rise and fall of your bed was enough to stir confusion in your sleep-addled mind.
You blearily opened your eyes, the last remnants of sleep blurring your vision. You stared up at red fur before your brain made the correction for you. That wasn't fur. It was hair. A red beard in fact.
Adrenaline shot through your system. You weren't in bed. You were in the arms of a stranger. A very attractive built stranger, but a stranger nonetheless.
You kept your eyes on his face as you carefully tried to work yourself free, prying his fingers from your hip. You watched for any sign of wakefulness. You were almost free when you slipped up. His grip tightened as he began to rouse, eyes slowly opening to reveal the most striking shade of turquoise you'd ever seen.
Enji looked down at you through tired eyes, pleased to see that your color had returned in the night. However, the deer in the headlights look you wore didn't suit you.
"Are you feeling better?" He asked, voice rough with sleep.
You shuddered as you felt the deep sound against you.
"I feel alright, albeit confused," You spoke slowly and cautiously, eyeing the handsome stranger with apprehension.
"Who are you? Where's Enji? He wouldn't have let you in here."
Enji looked up in thought, considering his response carefully.
"Enji is not far at all, ember. He's safe. I want to assure you that you're safe too."
You couldn't help the incredulous noise that escaped you at that.
"I'm sorry, but this doesn't seem like a situation I would deem 'safe'." You mumbled.
He just smiled and shook his head in response. If he wasn't already holding you, you were concerned your knees would have given out at that smile.
"I'm here because of a quirk malfunction. One that turned me and my team into animals upon contact." He looked at you firmly, fixing you into place with his gaze, offering no chance for interruptions.
"My name is Enji Todoroki, hero name: Endeavor. And I was turned into a pit bull that was entrusted to a frankly obnoxious but kind woman. I shared her home and was quite the jerk if I'm being honest. And then, the woman saved my life after I foolishly went after a villain. She shielded me from what would have been a death blow." He looked ahead, not wanting to see her reaction to his explanation.
"She has my respect, and.... should she accept it, my heart."
He waited in silence for a few moments more before looking back at you. You blinked in shocked silence as you worked to process the information. When he opened his mouth to say more, you firmly held a finger to his lips as you worked through your thoughts.
Finally, you looked back at him and narrowed your eyes, removing your finger.
"Prove it. Prove that you're my Enji and not some creep with an insane story?"
His stomach fluttered when you referred to him as 'your' Enji. But he needed to focus.
"Well..." He shifted his hold, rubbing circles on your hip as he thought. "I bit you right before the scorpion villain fight. It was a mistake on my part, and I've wanted to apologize ever since. When you woke up in the hospital, you told me about your quirk. When you get upset, you brew your favorite hot drink and watch your favorite show, knees tucked underneath yourself on the couch. Sometimes you let me join you, leaning against your side. You always laughed when I grumbled at something the characters did, saying I was too much of a critic."
You stopped his babbling once more with a finger to the lips. He leaned forward and kissed the finger, watching as a blush spread across your face.
"So... you are telling the truth." You pulled the hand back to your chest, shoulders relaxed from their tensed state. You relaxed back against his chest before quickly leaning up and pressing a quick kiss to his lips.
"Thank you Enji, for saving me. I would have frozen." You watched as a self-satisfied smile spread over his face. he leaned down for another kiss before you stopped him with a giggle.
"Alright loverboy, that was all you're getting. First, you need clothes and then we're going to go out on a proper first date where you tell me about the human Enji."
"I'm looking forward to it." He grinned before kissing your forehead and standing, gently setting you on your feet.
The dynamic between you two was in for a change, but you looked forward to dealing with this new Enji and learning how to move forward with him in your life.
Hey are u still doing the rescue series or nah😃
I am. However, I was hyper fixating on writing when I started the series. I keep opening the doc for the next chapter, and then adding nothing. I just need to sit down and work on it. So yes, I fully intend to continue, however: will I in the near future? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm so glad you've enjoyed them! I'll try hard to get the next chapter out soon! I've had some pretty bad writers block, but hopefully with the release of the 5th season, I'll be more inspired!
The Rescue: BNHA x Fem! Reader- Black rat snake
the rescue intro: here
Leading you back into the main section of the shop, she released your hand and put Izuku into a nearby cage.  Turning back to face you, she pulled out her phone.
“I just need to double-check something with the owner of the shop real quick. He likes to hear about any adoptions I supervise from a particular group of animals we have. You go ahead and look around while I confirm the one I have in mind “
You offered her a smile and a nod before turning to look around. Wandering the aisles of the store, you couldn't help but relax. There was some music playing in the background, too low for you to recognize the lyrics. You noted with amusement that your bird friend, Hizashi, was perched by the radio, bobbing along to it enthusiastically. You started to make your way towards him when a flicker of movement caught your attention from the corner of your eye. Turning to face the shelves of glass tanks, you searched them for the smooth movement that had captured your gaze. Perusing the tanks nearby, you were excited to find the one in the corner occupied. Inside was a large black snake. He was beautiful. Shiny black scales decorated the majority of his body save for his stark white underbelly and chin. It was hard to tell how long he was because he was wrapped up on a branch, coiled tightly as he watched you unblinking.
Tilting your head, your eyes scanned over the little sticker on the corner of the tank telling you his name and breed.
"Dabi, huh? Whoever named you was absolutely trying to be edgy," you crouched so your face was level with the tank and you could see him better. "Dabi is the name of a super dangerous villain, you know?"
Dabi watched you silently, serpentine tongue flicking in annoyance. He was used to the stares and the gawking from other store patrons, but that didn't mean he enjoyed it. You at least weren't tapping on the glass and whining when he didn't do anything interesting. Still, to him, you were a temporary distraction in the long borning sameness his days had turned into. He cursed the day he got involved with the league of villains and the quirk experiments that Shigaraki's "master" put into effect.
When Inko came to find you, she rounded the corner to see you sitting in front of the snake, mirroring his movements and sticking your tongue out in time with his. To be honest, she was a bit nervous about this arrangement, but Nezu had insisted you take the villainous young man home with you. Something about personalities and the change he needed or something like that. Still, if you were somehow the key to breaking the effects of the quirk like Nezu expected then it was worth the worry.
"I see you've found him all on your own!"
You whipped your head around to look at her in shock.
"Wait, a snake? Aren't they super hard to care for?"
"Not really, especially his breed," She answered calmly, offering you her hand to help you off the floor. "snakes are good pets, even if they look intimidating."
Taking her hand, you allowed her to pull you from your kneeling position. Looking back at the snake, you couldn't deny that he was interesting. You always thought snakes were really cool, and with some research, they could be really good pets. Besides, he was the one Inko wanted you to take home, and she knew so much more about him. You could trust her on this, and you honestly wanted to.
"If you help me, I will happily take him home. But you have to give me lots of info about him so I can do research. Okay?"
"It's a deal."
Inko helped you gather supplies for your new pet, making idle conversation and giving you tips on how to properly care for Dabi.
"Be very careful when you handle him, dear. He's got a mean temper and he's nipped me a couple of times. He comes from a not-so-friendly background so he's mistrusting. "
You nodded slowly, expression falling at her words. You would have to be very careful, but you were going to earn his trust no matter what. Inko noted your determined expression as she put supplies into a cart for you, a small smile tugging at her lips. Maybe Nezu was right, you could handle this. Perhaps there was hope for Dabi yet.
Once you had successfully gathered all the possible tools you would need, Inko fetched a pair of heavy-duty gloves and a snake hook. Carefully, she transferred the irritated snake into a bucket to transport him in before quickly latching the top.
"You'll want to make sure his container is firmly latched once you get him home. He's a bit of an escape artist. "
You were a bit concerned due to all the warnings given, but you were more determined than ever to take good care of the snake now within your care. He was going to feel loved, like it or not. Giving her a nod, you carefully took the container from her, cradling it close to your chest to give him any extra warmth you could grant him for the cold journey home.
Inko shooed you out, eager for you to get home before it got any darker or colder. You hugged her tightly before stepping out into the cold with your new pet.
Luckily, the trek home didn't take very long and you found yourself at your apartment door before you knew it.  Stepping inside, you quickly set to heat up the space. You weren't taking any chances in keeping your snake healthy.
"I'll get you settled as soon as I can, buddy. Just hold on for me."
Setting the container aside, you quickly got to work setting up his tank. While you were focused on the task at hand, you missed the lid of the container lifting as Dabi pushed out of his temporary cage. Slithering out, he relished his momentary freedom. While he was well aware that he couldn't escape in this form, that doesn't mean he wasn't going to cause as much mischief as he possibly could in the process.
While you were distracted, he explored the apartment. He had to admit, the change in perspective from when he was human was disorienting. As a human, he stood at five foot nine, but as a snake, he was mere inches off the ground. Because he was a python, he found that climbing wasn't too difficult, so he quickly made his way up a nearby chair to settle on the counter and get a better vantage point. Surveying his surroundings, he noticed with gathering annoyance that his new home belonged to a hero fan. You had various merch such as an allmight mug and a red hawks wing patterned blanket. Still, at least he hadn't seen anything flame patterned. You at least didn't have the worst taste in that regard.
As he looked around, you finished setting up his tank. Looking back towards where you left him, you stiffened, panic filling your veins. The container was clear, and you could clearly see it was missing a snake. Slowly, you rose to your feet, trying to quell the panic invading your mind.
"Dabi? Where'd you go?" trapping your lip between your teeth,  you started scanning the floor.
Dabi watched with amusement as you searched frantically for him. He could tell it was going to be fun to tease you. Had he been in human form, he would have called you out for your pointless panic.
'I'm right here, stupid girl,' he hissed, knowing you wouldn't be able to understand him, but wanting to express the sentiment regardless. Slithering to the edge of the counter, he perched there ` and hissed softly to get your attention.
Hearing the strange noise, you were shocked to see the reptile on your counter. The tank he had been in didn't do him justice. He was easily five feet long now that you could see him stretched out. While this situation was someone's worst nightmare, you couldn't help but catch your breath. You had never considered snakes to be all that pretty, but Dabi managed to be. The black of his scales was onyx against your counter The white scales of his underbelly just barely showed on his sides, a striking contrast. The most obvious separation of color was at his jaw, the underside bright white as if someone had pieced two colors together there.
You broke out of your thoughts to find the snake coiled around a pillar by your counter, now exactly eye level with you.
"Sorry, you got bored waiting for me. But your new tank is finished. Now you have a nice comfy place to sleep."
He gave you an unimpressed look. He would have rolled his eyes if he could. He was expecting more of a freak out instead of the weird half-smile you gave him while standing completely still for like 15 seconds. Weirdo. He pulled his focus back to the present as he felt your hand close gently around his middle. Jerking back, he bit you. The yelp that sounded made him cringe internally, but he steamrolled over the small part of him that felt remorse. He was determined to get rid of any trace of that if he wanted to move forward as a villain. Still, he didn't take pride in the blood that was welling up on your hand, that was more toga's thing.
You clutched your hand to your chest, looking back at him with wide eyes.  Backing up until you were out of his reach should he decide to go for a longer bite, you looked down at the red beading up from the tiny pinpricks on your hand. It didn't hurt that much and had mostly just surprised you. However, you were understandably a bit freaked out. You checked over your injury before pouting at Dabi, regaining some of your confidence now that the adrenaline was fading.
"Well, that wasn't very nice, Mr. grumpy scales. I just wanted to get you to your tank." skirting around him, you made your way into the small kitchen area. Keeping your gaze trained on Dabi, you went about washing your hands to try and disinfect the bite. It wasn't deep, but you weren't about to risk getting sick. Before long, you had the small wound clean and bandaged. However, this left you with the task at hand that had gotten you bit in the first place, getting Dabi to his tank.
"Now how are we gonna do this, my little spit-fire? I can't exactly leave you to roam the house, but I don't want a matching snake bite piercing for my other hand."
'whatever woman, it's your problem, not mine' Dabi watched you, tongue flicking lazily as he waited for you to decide your next move. He had to admit, you were more fun to mess with than the Midoriya lady. He always got chewed out by the various occupants of the store whenever he tried to cause trouble for her. Here, it was just you and him and he could be as much of a jerk as he wanted. It's not like he expected you to interact with him much anyway, so why waste time playing the well-behaved pet?
While he amused himself with his thoughts, you remembered the stick Inko had used to transfer him back at the store and recreated it with your broom handle. Dabi was not expecting the sudden change of perspective when you scooped him up, so he didn't think about resisting. Gently placing him in the bottom of the tank, you slid the handle out and carefully latched the tank lid.
"There we go Dabi. Sleep well. Tomorrow should be less stressful and you can take some time to settle in." You offered him a smile, a brief light in the dark living room before you retreated to your room. Dabi watched you go in disgruntled annoyance before settling down, knowing it was pointless to stay up and agonize about the strange day. Curling around himself until he was arranged in a neat little coil, he drifted to sleep.
~~~~~ "Dabi!!!! How did you get up there?" You stared wide-eyed, mouth agape at your snake. You had been living with him for just over two weeks now, but he still managed to surprise you. Right now, he was lazily draped over the top of a bookshelf in your living room. If he could emote, you would have easily seen a cheeky grin adorning his smug face.
"How, I... You're impossible!" You threw up your hands, not having the mental stamina to deal with his shenanigans for the day. "Fine, if you want to be tall, far be it from me to stop you."
You gave him a triumphant look before turning your back to him.
Unbeknownst to you, he was waiting for an opportunity and you had just given him the perfect one. He carefully stretched out over the edge of the bookshelf and let himself fall around your shoulders, his tail wrapping around your bicep to steady him. Obviously, you screamed and tried to dislodge him in a panic. The shrill sound hurt his ears, but the surprise he saw was worth it. If you could have seen your face, your eyes had been wide and crazy and he hissed out a laugh as you finally settled down.
Your heart was still beating in your throat but you quickly realized that it was just Dabi coiled around you. His cold scales against the bare skin of your neck and the foreign weight had been terrifying in the moment. You moved slowly, considering his sharp teeth that he had no qualms about using. He was a strange animal. He hated being handled but would take every opportunity to antagonize you. Still... he had grown on you. However, that was horrifying, and had he not been more secure, you would have flung him away.
You instead glared at the reptile, breath still heaving as you recovered.
"That was rude Dabi!" A pout formed on your lips, "You know, you could have been hurt. That was reckless. Also, you nearly gave me a heart attack."
You watched him warily. You didn't think he would bite you again, but he was unpredictable so you moved carefully.  You slowly reached out with the arm opposite the one he was wrapped around and carefully ran a finger over the scales on his back, enjoying the smooth and cool feeling of his scales under your fingers.
The feeling was alien to Dabi, but not uncomfortable. While he didn't like people touching him, your touch was featherlight and gentle. There was no promise of pain behind it, no expectation, just softness, and curiosity. He froze at the contact, unsure how to respond to the touch. In the past, he was faced with extremes. Always too hot, too rough, too painful, too much, and too expectant.
But your touch was gentle. You were soft, warm rather than scalding, gentle and careful, and...caring. Despite his behavior and lashing out, you stayed patient with him. You confused and irritated him to no end. Still, he supposed he could endure your touch for a little while longer. 'it's just because I'm a snake now. I'm drawn to her warmth' he muttered to himself, a soft hiss all that you heard.
Without knowing his true thoughts, you took his response as displeasure and pulled away quickly.
"Sorry spitfire, I didn't mean to bother you. I'll keep my hands to myself then," You started towards his cage, "let's get you put away, and then I'll leave you be."
Without even thinking about it, he tightened his hold on your arm slightly. You shot him a surprised look before deciding it was your imagination and carefully untangling him from your arm and placing him in his tank. You latched it and gave him a small smile and wave before walking away, going to the couch to give him space.
Meanwhile, Dabi was having a mental battle with himself. He knew that it had felt nice to be near you, but he was confused as to the why. He decided that he froze because he was used to people being too scared of him to caress him so casually. Still, a part of him, a part he tried to bury was convinced that he was avoiding the real reason. Looking back at you, he felt warm and confused. The warmth wasn't painful like the blue of his quirk, but rather, soothing. It calmed him yet made him feel funny all the same. Perhaps this is what true annoyance felt like, anger at being unable to faze you. He narrowed his gaze as much as this form would allow and glared back at you. He fell back on one of the few emotions he allowed himself and stewed in a fit of quiet anger.
Your skin prickled lightly as you felt his unblinking gaze on you. Turning your head from the book in your hands, you offered him a small smile, eyes soft. It was a direct opposite to his hard eyes and he was a bit taken aback but didn't let it show. The moment lasted only a few moments before a twinkle of mischievousness lit your eyes. Leaning forward slightly, you brought your fingers to your lips and blew the grumpy animal a kiss, bursting into giggles when he jerked back, affronted by your action.
You rolled back on the couch, heaving with laughter at the simple but funny reaction. Your eyes scrunched with mirth as an ungraceful snort left your mouth before you were able to recover, shoulders still shaking as you righted yourself. Looking back at the tank, your expression was bright with humor, cheeks red from the laughter.
"Oh come on, it was a kiss Dabi, it wouldn't have hurt you. " You made your way in front of him and crouched to his level. "Alright, I'm sorry for scaring you, but hey, payback's a *****. "
A broad smirk formed as you watched him flick his tongue in annoyance. "If that startled you so much, maybe I'll just have to spend more time with you so you're used to my antics."
He watched incredulously as you dragged a chair to the table his tank rested on and settled on it, watching him with elbows on your knees and chin resting in your palms.
"There. Now we can get to know each other. I'm afraid we got off on the wrong foot. " You gave a little bow from the chair before straightening. "I, am (y/n). I moved here from America, and my quirk is the ability to resist other quirks."
He slid to the front of the tank, interested in any information he could glean from this strange encounter. You were the only one he could interact with, so he might as well know a bit about you to use against you later if he ever turned human again.
'Now what, huh? You can't understand what I'm saying so you look pretty stupid right now. ' he spoke, but only hisses reached your ears. You pretended to listen intently regardless.
"Well, it's a pleasure to meet you Dabi. What's that? You're from here in Japan? Well, I must say, my accent is atrocious compared to you." You laughed, winking conspiratorily. "And what's your quirk? Spitfire? Do tell what that's like."
'You are by far the strangest person I have ever met and if we met when I was human, I'd squish you like a bug. And what's with the nickname being my quirk? animals don't have quirks, idiot.'
Not for the first time, Dabi wished he had arms again. He had to settle for flicking his tail with annoyance rather than punching the glass as he would have preferred. Still, you kept talking, oblivious to his annoyance.
'Spitfire huh? What name fits you then? I could just call you bug. You're annoying like one. Firefly then. You're obnoxiously sunny and useless.'
He smirked to himself, proud of his choice, and let you ramble on. The conversation was all about you and your job and favorite heroes. Everything and more than he wanted to know was shared with him. Still, it was better entertainment than staring at the tank in silence so he was grateful for it in a small measure. He didn't realize how intently he had been listening until you stopped. He straightened as he heard your voice waver for the first time in the half-hour you had been talking to him. Turning his reptilian eyes to you, you had changed demeanor completely. You had gotten to the family section of your story. Inhaling and pushing forward, you forced a fake smile that made his heart twist in something he told himself was disgust rather than sympathy.
"I have family, I suppose. I mean, they're still alive that is. But... Since I decided to move, they don't want anything to do with me," you cleared your throat, having not really taken time to talk aloud about it and process it fully and getting more choked up than you thought you would. "They think I'm an idiot for leaving. Considering my quirk, they thought I might as well not have one. They didn't think it was safe for me here and that it was a betrayal to leave them for my own dreams rather than their expectations."
You weren't looking at the tank anymore, instead focusing on the pale carpet at your feet, trying to distract from the feeling of hurt that had filled you so suddenly.
"They uh, they wanted me to be a hero. " A humorless smile flitted across your face briefly. "Their quirks were quirk paralysis and forcefield. They thought I would get some ability that could be used to save people. But no... I can only save myself. And that's only if they attack me with a quirk. I can still get hurt from falls, weapons, all that fun stuff. I disappointed them. Because I was born wrong, I took away their dreams of being a good child." You swallowed thickly, blinking hard to suppress the stinging in your eyes as angry and hurt tears filled them.
Dabi watched, transfixed by this girl who was so similar yet so different. Yet with all you had gone through, you hadn't turned bitter You still liked heroes despite your inability to join them. You were not what he expected and he suddenly didn't want you to stop talking. He needed to know more. Unfortunately for him, you were emotionally drained and had gone quiet.
Standing, you wiped your eyes with the heels of your palms before offering him a watery smile, trying to mask any hint of the sadness that had just consumed you.
"Kind of went off the deep end there! sorry about that. it's getting late, so I'll let you sleep. "
Before he could make any move or sound to protest, you had vanished into your room, the light switched off and plunging the room into darkness.
~~~~~~~~~
Ever since that day when you talked to Dabi, he had been friendlier to you. It was subtle at first, and you had to pay close attention to notice any difference. Dabi was less hesitant to spend time with you and as time went on, he became comfortable with you handling him. Now, months after taking him into your care, he was always with you around the house. He was still a jerk and nipped you on occasion, but he never broke skin anymore.
He had taken to riding around on your shoulders, wrapped loosely there with his head resting on your collar bone. You would continue about your day with him resting there, occasionally you would reach up and stroke him. You talked with him often, having one-sided conversations as you cooked, whispering to him conspiratorily as you commented on the various actors on tv. Once you even took him to the store with you without realizing it. It wasn't until the cashier nearly screamed that you realized you had forgotten to put him back in his tank. You could have sworn he was laughing at you on the way home, hiss coming out in disjointed little huffs.
Dabi was, of course, amused by your mistake. He wrapped himself around your neck, applying light pressure as if to remind you that he was in fact still there as you hurried home. 'I was wondering how long it would take for you to realize. I didn't think you would actually make it to the store, firefly. How unobservant can you be, I'm a five-foot snake.' He tickled the base of your throat with his tongue, grinning to himself as you shuddered.
"Hey! Stop that, you wouldn't want me to drop you. I promise the pavement is not as forgiving as the carpet in my apartment." You gently pushed his head away, tucking him into the hood on your jacket.
Your shoe caught on a rock as you passed an alleyway, briefly causing you to stumble. You nearly sent Dabi flying from his place on your shoulder.
"Hah! See? Careful." laughing, you settled him back in place, patting him goodnaturedly
'real graceful there, firefly. Trying to seduce the pavement?  Because you almost kissed it. I could do better and I don't even have legs.' As much as he teased, he couldn't help but be endeared to your clumsiness.
"careful there, girlie. That could have been a bad fall. Wouldn't want to get that pretty face marked up."
You whipped your head around and looked owlishly at the man who had spoken. He was in the alleyway beside you, leaning against the brick with a cigarette. He watched you lazily, eyes trailing over you with something akin to appraisal.
Stepping back, you gave a tight nod and a forced chuckle.
"Yeah, really lucky there. um," Shifting uncomfortably, your eyes darted towards home before hurriedly returning to the mystery man, not sure you wanted to let him out of your sight, "I'll just be going now, can't keep my boyfriend waiting." You ducked your head and swiftly kept walking, the feeling of his eyes following you leaving a gross slimy feeling crawling up your spine.
Once you were out of range and you couldn't feel his gaze again, you took off for home. Your hands went to your throat, holding Dabi steady as you sprinted. When you arrived at the apartment, your breathing was heavy and punctuated by the occasional gasp. Dabi could feel your pulse fluttering against his side frantically. Once you were inside, you dropped your bags and whipped the door shut. Fumbling with the locks, you didn't relax until all of them were secured tightly. You rested your forehead against the wood, heaving quietly as you tried to relax and give the adrenaline a chance to wear off.  You wouldn't have reacted like this normally, but something about that man had activated your fight or flight response.
Dabi watched you carefully, not admitting that he was concerned by that display. Stretching out to get a better look at you, he was relieved when your eyes found his form and focused on him rather than the blank distance you had been occupied with before.
"Sorry about that Spitfire, I bet that was a wild ride." Standing, you slid off your jacket and carefully unwound him from your neck, "And hopefully, you will never have to experience that ever again."
Dabi curled around your arm, his weight a comfort that helped ground you as you calmed. Setting him down on the counter, you turned your attention to the bags you had abandoned by the door.
"What do you think that was about?" You wrinkled your nose in distaste, as you remembered the man. You didn't like how he looked at you, " I think I lost him, so we should be alright."
You focused on putting the groceries away and started rambling about the movie you were looking forward to that was in production.
"Oh you would love it, it has my favorite actress in it and I always liked the story. I can't wait to see what direction they take with it."
You looked back at the snake as if to ask his opinion before nodding sagely.
"Ah yes, I agree, they might absolutely ruin the storyline by adding an unnecessary romantic subplot."
Dabi mentally rolled his eyes at your antics. he may act like it didn't affect him, but he quite enjoyed it when you talked to him. You treated him like a trusted friend. He adored when you smiled at him. Throughout his life, he had never had anyone smile at him as you did. You looked at him like he was the most important thing in your life and if he were human, he probably wouldn't be able to conceal the awed expression that would follow just one of your smiles.
He listened intently as you worked, mind wandering as he thought of what would change if he were human. He'd get to see your cute annoyed pout more often, that'd be for sure. He would tease you mercilessly, but he knew you would respond in kind, probably teasing him back and poking fun right back.
Still, it was better this way, at least in his mind. This way, he could actually be around you without scaring you off. His burns would likely intimidate you if his reputation as a villain didn't. No, he was better off as a snake. Maybe it was selfish to pine after you this way, but he wouldn't have to face your true reaction to him this way. The possibility of actually being able to be with you as a human and you rejecting him was not something he would be willing to face. He supposed being a snake had that small advantage. You would never know what an awful person he was and leave him, to never grace him with that annoyed look or that silly nickname. Besides, he couldn't care about you, not really. He told himself that he didn't have emotions anymore. Those feelings died the same night Touya did.
He was pulled from his thoughts when you picked him off the counter, carefully coiling him around your arm. You placed a quick kiss on the top of his head before you lowered him into his tank. Laughing, you tried to slide him off your arm, amused by his reluctance to let go.
"Dabi, let me go! I gotta go to bed!"
You succeeded in removing him from your hand before bidding him goodnight, not bothering to close the tank as he always managed to escape anyway. He watched you go, only averting his eyes when you passed from his view. Settling down to rest, he briefly let himself think of what happened next. Maybe Dabi died too. When he became a snake, he couldn't return to being human, he couldn't return to being Dabi. Maybe this version of him, this one could be allowed to love. From afar of course. He sighed and focused on your door, letting himself drift as he surrendered to sleep.
~~~~~~~~
Work had been difficult today. You were relieved to put up your apron as your shift ended. the day actually reminded you of the day you had stumbled across the pet store. That day, while awful in the beginning, became one of the best days of your life. If it hadn't been for the difficulties of the day and the need to stay late, you wouldn't have had to brave the store and find that amazing pet store. You smiled to yourself as you reminisced on that day and finding Dabi. The thought of getting back to your apartment lifted your spirits and you were quick to clock out and leave work. There was a spring in your step as you followed the familiar route home, mind full with a plan forming of how you were going to spend your evening with your best friend and pet.
Unfortunately, your happy mood was exactly what got you in trouble. You hadn't been paying as much attention as you should have been, mind focused too much on what came next than on your surroundings. Before you knew it, a hand reached out from the alley you had rightly fled the day before. The man from before tugged you harshly into his chest, hand clasped tightly to your mouth while the other held a knife to your throat.
"We meet again, girlie. Now just be real quiet for me and you'll be alright. "
Your blood ran cold as you listened to his commands, following him into the shadows as he led you further away from the safe and welcoming light of the street. It disappeared along with your hope as he pulled you harshly along. He led you through a maze of alleyways and shortcuts for what felt like forever. A dilapidated warehouse rose in front of you and he harshly tugged you inside the dingy building. You wanted to fight, but he wasn't using a quirk. You could survive a knife to the throat if it was a quirk controlling it, but a plain mugging? You were still vulnerable. You felt your heart sink when he removed his hand. He didn't trust you, so that meant he was confident any sound you made would not reach any ears that mattered.
"What do you want from me? I'm no one special, I'm not useful to you, why would you take me?" You searched his face frantically, looking for some explanation.
He laughed and pushed you into a chair, attaching your wrists behind it with a rope. The practiced movement made you grit your teeth as you realized that the ease of it meant you weren't the first he'd done this to. Biting down fear, you glared at him.
"Let me go! What are you planning with me?" You spit your words, the fear fading to anger at the horrible man. You pulled against the rope as he stepped away but it held tight.
"You, my dear, are going to be a beautiful addition to my collection," you craned your neck as he circled you, that same wrongness from that first day insisting that you keep him in your vision.
"you see, my quirk allows me to identify the quirks of others. The more powerful it is, the more vague the details I get, but yours is fascinating."
Leaning forward, he grabbed your chin and forced you to look at him, eyes dancing with amusement at the anger and uncertainty that shone in your expression.
" I can't see your quirk. But... You're not quirkless. Tell me," he squeezed your cheeks, amused expression turning dark, "What are you hiding from me, girlie? I have quite a few buyers who would be interested in a pretty young thing like you, but I need to see if you're worth my time."
Narrowing his eyes, he let your chin go and stepped back.
"Tell me your quirk or I'll have to mark up that pretty frame. I don't like to resort to torture, but I assure you, I am well-practiced in it. "
You clenched your jaw and lifted your chin, eyes sparking in defiance.
"You'll be caught. The heroes will find us. I'm sure of it. You will be found." Your gaze faltered slightly as he erupted into laughter at your expense.
"Silly girlie, the heroes won't find you here. And if they do, I'll be long gone by then. No one knows to look for you, you're all alone, and if you don't cooperate, you'll scream and no one but me will get to hear the pretty sound." After checking your bindings one last time, he smirked at you and unceremoniously tied a gag in your mouth. "How about I let you think about what happens next, see if some time alone will make you more responsive." And just like that, he walked away, leaving you in the center of the cold warehouse, tied to a chair.
Once he was out of sight, you frantically fought to free yourself, crying out as you rubbed your wrists raw in an effort to slip them free of the rope. Unfortunately, they held true and tight.  You bowed your head after what felt like hours of struggling and let yourself rest, building up strength for what could be a fruitless fight.
~~~~~~~~
Dabi waited less than patiently for you to come home from work. You were late and he was not pleased in the slightest. He slid around the bottom of his tank, glancing back at the door every few seconds. He worked his jaw irritably, frustration growing with each moment that passed. You were supposed to be here and he didn't like the breach in routine.
The room grew dark as the sun traveled across the sky, vanishing behind the horizon along with Dabi's anger. The frustration that had been building in the pit of his stomach had soured. Now worry was his prevalent feeling. You had never stayed out this late before. He slipped out of his cage You never latched it anymore because he was always escaping anyway. slipping onto the floor, he made his way through the house, wondering if he had somehow missed you coming home in the first place. Alas, there was no sign of you and as he tasted the air, he could find no trace of you.
Worry ate at him as the hour grew later and later. Thoughts of possible outcomes flooded his mind with unpleasantness. His frantic thoughts slowed when the sun peeked into the living room. Any doubt that something was wrong was gone. he growled and threw his small body at the door, furious that he could do nothing. 'She's in trouble and I'm useless! I can't just sit around and do nothing! The woman I love is in danger somewhere and I'm a ******* snake!'
The anger in him boiled in his veins and he felt odd. With a loud pop, his gaze was now level with the doorknob rather than the bottom of the door. He blinked slowly as he took stock of what just happened. He was human again. He grimly took stock of himself, making sure all features were accounted for before realizing the implications of being human again. He had been thinking about you when he transformed, how much he needed to be human again to help you. He waved away the thought with irritation. He wasn't ready to believe you had broken the quirk's effect on him like some ******** fairy tale curse. Still, thinking on this brought him back to the matter at hand.
He searched your apartment for clothes before bolting out the door. He searched all the places you talked about, looking for clues to your whereabouts.
His search had lasted all morning and he was getting desperate as the evening approached with no real solution. He ducked into an alleyway before pausing. He recognized this place... This is where you had tripped just the day before last. He had been focused on you then, but he remembered that a man had talked to you here. Dabi thought of how terrified you had been and hoped you weren't scared now, where ever you were. About to give up on this section of the city, he nearly tripped outside the alleyway. He kicked the object in anger and it ricocheted off the brick and pelted him in the leg. He felt his mouth grow dry in horror when he noticed exactly what the object was. It was your nametag from work.
Picking it up, his fears were confirmed as he looked it over. You had been taken by the man from the alleyway. A deep growl of anger escaped him and he had to tuck the nametag into his pocket for fear of incinerating it in his anger. He turned quickly and strode back into the street. Hopefully, Giran was available because he had a favor to cash in. He would locate the man who took his little firefly, and if they had harmed you... well, only ash would remain when he was done.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You glared at your captor through tired eyes, eyes stinging from the punch you had received after insulting him.
"Now really, all I want is a measly bit of information. Your quirk, what is it."
You closed your eyes and relaxed your expression before giving him a weary look. Bowing your head, you mumbled under your breath.
Taishi, as he had introduced himself, stepped forward to hear better. "What was that? Speak up."
You repeated your words, quiet still. It was spoken as if you lacked the strength to speak louder. Growling in annoyance, he leaned closer to hear.
Inhaling deeply, you waited until he was close, " I said... **** YOU!" You screamed at him, kicking him between the legs with all the force you could muster. As he fell to the ground, your chair tipped over from the force of the kick and your vision swam as your head bounced on the floor.
Taishi rose, venom in his gaze as he kicked you sharply in the stomach, glowering in rage as you yelped.
"You could have done this the easy way, but no! You just had to be a *****!" He readied a blade as he stood over your prone body.
You slammed your eyes shut in preparation for the pain, but it never came. There was the sound of fire coming to life, and an uncomfortable stream of hot air brushed over you accompanied by a horrid stench and the screams of your captor.
Daring to open your eyes, you were met with a strange sight. A man you had never seen before stood above your captor, his hands aglow with a blue flame. Covered in burns and staples, there was no question in your mind who it must be, the villain Dabi.
Once he was certain Taishi was not going to get up again, he turned to you. His turquoise eyes locked onto yours and you could see fury burning in them. But as he looked you over, they softened a bit, and concern mixed with the anger. As he approached, you tried to scoot backward away from him, a whimper escaping unbidden.
Dabi froze at your obvious fear. He regarded you for a moment as he tried to figure out what to do. He was furious, but he knew you needed him calm instead if you were to trust him. Closing his eyes, he extinguished his hands and held them up in a placating gesture.
"Shh... It's okay firefly, I'm not going to hurt you." He hated that you looked at him with such fear. You had blood running down your face, lip obviously split from a punch, and various bruises and cuts on your arms added to your pitiful state. Still, you were strong, and he knew that if he didn't diffuse the situation, you would try to fight.
"Are you alright, firefly? Anything broken?" He scanned you for pressing injuries relieved to find nothing too major. He knelt on the floor beside you as you strained to look back at him, still freaked out and confused.
"What are you doing? Why are you here? What do you want from me?" your questions were rushed as you tried to make sense of what was happening. You hissed in pain and closed your eyes tightly as he freed your wrists, fresh blood welling from the raw skin as the rope agitated it one last time. You were weaker than you wanted to admit, but it didn't seem like the villain was going to do anything.
Dabi tossed the chair away and gently pulled you onto your back, cradling your upper body in his lap as blue eyes scanned over your face. His shoulders sagged in relief and he pulled you close.
" Don't you ever scare me like that again, idiot!" He scooped you up and walked out of the warehouse with purpose before shouting for someone named Kurogiri.
You clutched him in panic as a dark void opened in front of you and you both vanished inside you screaming as you tucked your face into his shoulder.
Dabi rolled his eyes as he stepped out of the matching portal in your apartment.
"Stop screaming, you'll get a noise complaint." He carried you into your room and laid you on the bed before disappearing to get a first aid kit while you glanced around in shocked bewilderment.
"But, how? Home, and the dark, and you're a villain. " This day had sucked, and you were fairly certain you were having a mental breakdown. "What is going on?" You wailed, dropping your head into your hands as your head pounded.
"I brought you home, firefly. Also, I'm you're pet snake. Surprise. Now sit still so I can patch you up." He plopped down on the bed beside you and immediately began tending to your wounds while all you could do was stare in disbelief.
"You're insane. Or I'm dead. I suppose those are both viable options." Still, something about his words rang true.
"If you're actually Dabi, my snake, what's something only he would know?"
Dabi rolled his eyes and fixed you with a scowl but stayed quiet in thought as he contemplated an answer. You searched his gaze, almost challenging him to say something to prove he wasn't crazy.
You jumped when he grabbed your hand. His thumb traced a familiar pattern on the inside of your palm that he identified without even looking at it.
"Right there, Is where I, your 'Spitfire' as you called me... bit you during the first week I was here." He watched your eyes widen and continued when you stayed silent. "You also told me your whole life story, but I figure you've been through enough today without me recounting all the parental disappointment you've told me about. Now, are you going to let me fix you up or not?" He quirked an eyebrow in a movement that you recognized from his time as your pet. He had tilted his head a little bit, his tell when he was annoyed. Or at least, it was what you had told yourself when you still thought he was just an animal.
You swallowed and reached out, hand cupping his cheek gently, mindful of the staples. You watched his eyes cycle through various stages of panic, as well as affection and fear as he kept a calm and cocky facade to all who didn't know him as well as you did.
"You're really him. You're my spitfire?" He nodded, watching you uncomfortably as you searched his face. He waited for your verdict, where you rejected him outright and drew away. Instead, you leaned forward and pressed a gentle kiss to his lips before pulling back shyly.
"You saved my life. Thank you, Dabi. I know you're a villain, but.... You were my hero today."
He debated keeping up his facade before saying to heck with it. He pulled you into a fierce kiss, all his worry and relief and love pouring over you as he held you tight. You relaxed into the embrace, kissing back as you let him tell you how he really felt. Pulling away when you needed air, a breathy giggle escaped when you bumped noses.
His smile was one of the most beautiful sights you had ever seen and you were looking forward to learning what had happened to put such a mysterious and amazing man in your life.
He shushed you as you moved to ask, shaking his head tiredly. "After, my firefly. Let's get your injuries tended to first, then I'll tell you everything."

The Rescue: BNHA x Fem! Reader- Golden Retriever
A/N
While I left the age vague in the intro, it can be surmised that reader is somewhere in their 20s based on the trope of moving away from family and being on your own. Since I am in that age range, that is where I am most comfortable writing. However, as much as I love Allmight, it would be a bit too big of an age gap for me to be comfortable writing.
So, pushing the established story aside, this chapter will mess with time a little. Each chapter is basically it's own au, so this is just even farther removed than the other ones. This chapter takes place while allmight is in his prime. That means that while I mentioned Deku and some of the others in the intro, they might just be animals in this chapter. I know it's confusing, and that's totally on me for not thinking it through when I started. But this chapter features a young Allmight rather than the older one featured in the anime. This chapter predates his injury.
I apologize to the small might lovers, but I can't see myself comfortably writing about romancing a man who is around 50 years old in the manga. Thank you for reading. Again, I apologize if it wasn’t what you were hoping for, but it’s what I am comfortable writing.
She led you back to the main section of the store, her hand only leaving yours once you were by the dog supplies. The shelves were filled with a dazzling array of dog toys, beds, and even costumes. They ranged from the top heroes to silly objects like hot dogs in all shapes and colors. They drew you in and you gently ran your fingertips across them, enjoying the cheap fabric texture and the cute pictures on the tags. Inko pulled your attention away from a particularly bright allmight dog costume, an amused twinkle in her eyes once she noticed your interest in the popular hero.
"Good choice, but he won't need that just yet, dear." She placed a red, white, and blue leash in your hand and the handle to a cart, Presumably to carry the dog food and other supplies.
"So it's obvious that you want me to have a dog," You pointed out while helping her select items for this mystery pup, "but when do I get to meet him?"
Inko giggled and grabbed your shoulders gently, "Why, you've already met him, silly!" spinning you around, she gestured to the golden retriever who had been following the two of you around. He was the dog who had sat with you during your backroom chat with Mrs. Midoriya and had been so friendly as you entered the shop. You eyed him with skeptical confusion, not quite believing that he was the one Inko had in mind. You had assumed that since he was allowed to roam free, he was owned by the kind woman.
Despite your confusion, you knelt to his level and happily ruffled the fur on his head, fingers combing through the feathery fur on his ears. The strands were silky and soft brushing against your fingers. Now that he was the center of attention, he seemed almost bashful and uncertain.  He ducked his head but still leaned into your eager fingers.
"Are you sure I can take him? I thought since he was loose in the store that he belonged to you."
"Oh no, dear! Toshinori here is wonderfully well behaved. He and a couple of others are allowed to roam free. They keep order for the most part and the other animals seem to respect their authority."
You scrunched up your nose in amusement, scratching under the dog's chin as he collapsed against your legs on the tile, eyes closed with enjoyment.
"So you're a good nanny dog, huh? Bet you did a great job of keeping everyone in line. Good boy!"
Toshinori was understandably flustered, even if he couldn't really show it. He wasn't used to having this much attention anymore. He wasn't certain how long it had been since he had been transformed into a dog, but the change in perspective still threw him for a loop. In his human form, he was by no means short, so being a dog was quite the difference. He had dealt with overenthusiastic fans, villains, and much more, but your fawning over him left him quite bashful and flustered. It didn't help that Mrs. Midorya was simply watching with an approving smile. He wasn't quite sure what made her and Nezu so sure this would be a good idea, but he would trust them. And by extension, he would have to learn to trust you.
You were of course oblivious to his inner turmoil. Taking the leash from Inko, you quickly clipped it to his collar with one more ruffle of his fur.
"I'll give you a call tomorrow to check in on you, but I don't expect him to cause you any trouble. Visit anytime or call if you have any questions." Inko said, pleased in your reaction to him.
You gave her a nod before giving her a quick hug, already so thankful for the kindness she had shown. Toshinori wasn't just a pet, he was a lifeline of sorts. You wouldn't be alone, and you had someone who you could shower with affection and keep you company. You genuinely hoped he enjoyed staying with you. Mrs. Midoriya squeezed you back gently and released you.
"Take care of yourselves now! Have a safe trip home."
You nodded and took a hold of the leash and the wagon handle before bracing yourself for the cold. Stepping outside, it was like all the warmth you had accumulated in the store was whisked away in an instant. You grimaced before setting off for your apartment. The sooner you could get Toshi somewhere warm, the better. Even though you knew dogs weren't as bothered by the snow, you didn't entirely trust his coat to keep him comfortably warm at the moment. Toshi easily kept pace with you as you made your way through the snowy city. The blizzard had calmed down to gentle flakes that ambled lazily through the sky. Had you been warmer, you might have stopped to appreciate it for how beautiful it was. Still, at least the weather kept any criminals off the streets.
Unlocking the door, you carefully tugged the cart into your house and shut the door behind you and your new friend.
"I bet this feels a whole lot better," You cooed, "make yourself at home while I get some dinner started."
Toshinori watched as you hung up your coat and moved around the apartment with practiced ease. This situation was completely foreign to him. Since he had been focused on his career and becoming the symbol of peace, he hadn't spent much time fostering many friendships or relationships. To say he was awkward when it came to being in someone else's house was an understatement. He hovered uncertainly by the door as you set things up for him. Once you noticed his behavior, you were understandably confused.
"Didn't take you for the shy sort, buddy. I said make yourself at home." You laughed a little and gestured to the expanse of the apartment, "It's your home now too after all."
He almost nodded but stopped himself as it would be quite odd if a dog knew how to nod in response to something someone said. Still, he was quite appreciative of your hospitality. The apartment was nice but not very big. There was a simple kitchen unit, big enough for one normal person. He cringed to think of how he would navigate such a small kitchen had he been in his human form. He was lucky to be a dog in this instance, loathe as he was to admit it.
Next, he explored the living room, noting its simplicity. The walls were void of decorations. It looked lived in, yet very much a house instead of a home. It was a bit discouraging if he was honest, less a place of comfort than one merely of shelter. Instead of continuing his depressing exploration, he turned to you. He decided it was more important to learn about his new housemate.
You looked tired. It was something he could relate to, but it was still sad to see on others. You were hardworking. When you stopped by the pet shop, it was clear that you were on your way home from a job. He had offered what comfort he could in this form while you had talked with Inko. He had been listening as you told her your unfortunate situation, and it moved him. Looking at you now, he could see the pull of the stress on you, the subtle slump of your shoulders. Still, you looked at him with a bright smile and were already so affectionate.
He told himself that he was supposed to be the hero, the symbol of peace. In this form, he likely wouldn't be able to do much, but he resolved that if he could ease your burden and lift your spirits, he could still call himself a hero. If he was a dog now, so be it. He decided he would be the best dog ever. As his alma mater said... He would go beyond, Plus Ultra!
You looked back at Toshi and your brows drew together in confusion. He was zoned out facing you. He was baring his teeth in a clumsy grin. Or at least you hoped it was a smile. It looked a bit ridiculous on his face and you had to stifle a laugh.
"Hey, buddy? What on Earth are you doing? You okay there?' He immediately snapped out of whatever trance he was in and looked up at you cheerfully, the teeth smile still happening, but at least his tail was wagging. You were confused, unsettled, and a fair bit amused, but he didn't seem to be in a bad mood. You chalked it up to one of his weird personality quirks.  What a funny guy.
"Well big fella, I'm heading for bed before I completely crash," You clasped your hands together before continuing, "Okay, ground rules. If you need outside, come and get me. I'd rather not lose my security deposit."
Your nose scrunched up in displeasure, thinking of the cleaning that would involve. Shuddering, you continued.
"Rule 2, in conjunction with rule 1, don't chew anything but the toys Mrs. Midoriya got for you. Rule 3, don't break anything."
Toshi sat, again resisting the urge to nod. This seemed to satisfy you though as you gave him a tired nod of your own before you tilted your head in thought.
"Man, one night and I'm already treating you like a human. Oh well, I hope you were able to understand for the most part. " You yawned, muffling it with your hand before looking down at him with a sleepy smile.
"Goodnight Toshi, be a good boy and sleep well. I hope you like it here." You walked past him to your bedroom, stopping to affectionately pat his head before slipping through the door. You left it open a crack so he could have access if he needed something. Before long, you were curled up in your pajamas, soothed by the comforting warmth found between your covers.
~~~~~~~~~~
Toshinori was a bizarre dog. You had noticed in the first few days that he had some peculiarities. First of all, was his smile.  It was ridiculous looking, but he seemed to wear it quite often. He would puff out his chest a little and stare up at you with pride and that ridiculous face.
Another thing that quickly gained your attention was how much of a clumsy dingbat he was. He acted like he wasn't quite sure how limbs worked in the long run. He often tripped over things. Not that you were judging, you weren't the most graceful either.
He was also scary smart. You knew dogs could be intelligent, but Toshinori was something else. You swore sometimes he would understand you as if you were speaking in his language. He always did something mildly dumb afterward that made you question his smarts though. He did tricks without being taught and problem solved quite easily. He had only done it once, but he knew how to get into the fridge. Granted, this one time was because you had mentioned wanting your water bottle but didn't want to get up. Hearing this, he turned tail and trotted to the fridge and nudged it open with his nose. You watched in dumbstruck silence as he easily found your bottle and brought it to you. He quickly went back to other dog activities like chewing on a toy you got him, but you wouldn't forget how smart he was and how he took care of you. It wasn't until a week or so later when you discovered just how far he would go for you. ~~~~~~~
You had just finished work, so it was later than you had hoped. The sun was due to set in an hour, so you had to move quickly. Stepping into the apartment, your expression lit up when you noticed Toshi on the couch, seemingly invested in the hero documentary that was currently playing on the television. Oops, you had meant to turn that off when you left that morning. Oh well. You shrugged off your mistake and grabbed his leash off the side table, the metal clinking lightly and drawing the attention of the canine.
"Hey buddy. Sorry to pull you away from your show, but I figured you'd enjoy some time outside. It's warmed up a lot from last week. " You held up the leash with a hopeful smile. Your smile widened when he hopped up quickly and joined you at the door.
"There's my good boy! Let's head out!" You happily attached the leash and led him outside, enjoying the crisp air. As you walked, you hummed to yourself. There was a fragment of a song stuck in your head that had been with you all day. You had just gotten to the chorus before passing a newspaper stand and stopping in your physical and mental tracks. Your eyes scanned the printed words and ink glossy pages for what caught your interest until you noticed that there was a piece on Allmight. If you were honest, you were harboring a bit of a crush on the dashing hero. The headline made your happy mood falter a little.
Apparently, a bunch of heroes had gone missing recently. The agencies' stories all had given them alibis, but the timing was weird. Unfortunately, this also led to a rise in crime as the remaining heroes picked up the slack. Everyone was worried about Allmight, but his sidekick, Sir Nighteye assured the public that everything was under control and that there was no reason to panic. You still worried a little. He was amazing, but no hero was invincible, and you cared about his wellbeing. You probably cared more than a regular fan should, but you admired him greatly. Scenarios of secret villain ambushes and confidential missions filled your head and swept you up with worry.
Toshi looked up after you had stopped and was swept up in the headlines as well. He was terrified that he wouldn't be able to help in this form, and the backlash being in this form was already starting to wreak havoc. He was glad Nighteye was able to get the situation under control, but he knew that it must be weighing heavily on his mind. He drew his gaze from the smiling picture of him in his human form to check on you. He was alarmed to see clear worry and distress clouding your face. The best way to calm a citizen as far as he was concerned was to reassure them that he was there to protect you with a smile. Seeing as he couldn't exactly talk to you, he did the next best thing he could.
You were drawn out of your worried thoughts when Toshi pushed his nose against your hand, determined to get your attention off the news and onto him. Once you finally looked down at him, he puffed his chest out and gave you that ridiculous toothy smile. Any worry immediately fled your mind as you laughed.
"You are such a dork! What are you doing? You copying Allmight?" His smile and posture did remind you of the hero's signature pose. Still, seeing your dog attempt it to little success was hilarious.
"Well come on small might, I think I promised you a walk. I'm sure the symbol of peace is doing just fine, no need for me to worry my little head about him."
Tugging the leash lightly as you resumed walking, there was a new lightness to your step. He was a funny dog, but he knew exactly what to do to make you feel better. Toshi was confused, but also relieved that his idea worked. Still, the idea of you worrying about him warmed his heart.
As you walked on, you had relaxed more and he found himself admiring you. If his smile could make people safe, yours could make people feel happier. It was infectious and he couldn't help but find it pretty.
Of course, as soon as he had gotten used to it, something happened that caused it to disappear. He was distracted by the sound of heavy footfalls on the pavement. Before he could make the connection, a man shoved past you, snatching your purse and knocking you off your feet in the process. You yelped in pain as you met the ground, releasing the leash in shock as the man fled with your purse clutched tightly to his side. Toshi sprang into action, leash trailing behind him as he raced behind the thief. He wasn't going to let anyone hurt you, not while he was around! The scoundrel would not be getting away!
The man looked back, catching sight of him before redoubling his efforts and pushing people out of the way as he ran. Unfortunately for him, Toshi was fast and mad. With an intimidating growl, he latched onto the thief's pant leg, dragging him to a halt and toppling him in the process. He landed hard on the pavement a pained groan wrenching itself free as he slowly turned onto his back to face his pursuer. Toshi stood over the man's chest, a low growl rumbling in the back of his throat.
A crowd of onlookers was quickly gathering around the paralyzed thief. He paid them no mind as he made sure the man wouldn't be able to get away.  You gave a loud sigh of relief when you caught up to them. You pushed your way through the crowd, ignoring the pain from hitting the cement earlier as you managed to make it to the front.
"Toshi! You caught him! What a good boy!" kneeling next to him, you pat him affectionately before snatching your purse from the grip of the trembling man on the ground.
You looked over him with disdain, clearly unhappy that your walk had been ruined.
"Lucky for you, my dog got a hold of you before I did," you shot at him, eyes narrowed, "I've already called the police. Hopefully, this will be a lesson not to pull a stupid stunt like that again."
Once the police had him, you turned your attention back to Toshi. Any annoyance and hurt that had been on your mind before melted away once he was back at your side. It actually startled him when you dropped to his level and hugged him.
"I have the best dog in the world! That was so cool!" You cooed happily as you pet him, peppering the top of his head with kisses. "You were so heroic, going after him! Such a good boy!"
That night, you made sure he got several treats.
~~~~~~
The weeks passed quickly with the two of you. Inko called often and you made sure to keep her updated. She seemed excited by your progress, but also a bit anxious about something. Whenever you brought it up, she brushed it off, but it never quite disappeared. She always switched the subject to Toshi, which was a weakness of yours because you could gush about him all night.
You had just ended your call with Inko when you got a notification. Crossing the living room, you plopped onto the couch next to Toshi displacing a decorative pillow as you settled. You carded your fingers through his fur as you scrolled through the messages on your phone, smiling absentmindedly as you rested your head on Toshi's back. He twisted around a little so he could rest his chin on your shoulder.  He breathed deeply with content, the breath brushing against the top of your head which triggered a giggle from you. He was more relaxed than he'd ever been and you were a big cause of that. You set him at ease in a way that he wasn't used to. He wished he could stay like this forever. However, as the silly hallmark movie played in the background his thoughts were steered to how he would change the scene between you two for the better. Maybe not change per se, but tweak it. Idealize it.
He imagined a different scenario: one where the two of you had met as humans. If things had lined up, he could have enjoyed your companionship, but in a slightly different way.  He thought of how nice it would be to cuddle with you as a human. He imagined your head resting against his chest as you engross yourself in a silly text post or some video that left you snickering into your palm, laughter leaking through your fingers as you tried to contain your mirth. Or perhaps he'd take you on a walk, hand in hand this time. Your hand dwarfed by his larger one, clasped hands brushing against your thighs as you walked. He didn't know when he had started to think of you in this light, but he couldn't deny he enjoyed it. Something about you drew him in. You were no longer a tentative roommate, you were now the object of his affections. Unfortunately, you had no way of knowing his true form or the extent of what he felt, so he contented himself with simply being a protective companion. Still... if he ever were able to return to human form, he'd do everything in his power to woo you properly. Like you deserved.
He was pulled from his thoughts by an excited gasp. You shot up from your reclining position, beaming at your phone before turning your excited smile to him. Your eyes shone with excitement and he couldn't help but be happy for you. Very confused, but happy.
"Toshi! guess what!" you grabbed his head and pressed your forehead to his, face scrunched in happiness, "I have a whole weekend off! I can have a mini-vacation!"
You released him and slid off the couch, clutching your phone and quickly searching the weather planned for the next day, tongue stuck out a little with concentration. Toshi could feel your excitement, it was contagious and adorable. He hopped off the couch and watched you, tail wagging enthusiastically.
You looked back at him and squinted, thinking hard before your face brightened.
"Golden retrievers are known for their swimming right? Let's go to the beach!" an excited squeal escaped your chest as you thought about it more. "I haven't been to the beach since I was a little girl! This is going to be so much fun!"
You propelled yourself to your feet and started pacing as you made plans. You were determined to make this a fun experience and you were going to go all out!  Toshi sat and watched you fondly, listening to your idle chatter as you threw ideas out before quickly moving to another. It wasn't until he noticed the time that he stopped you. He whined to get your attention before trotting over. He carefully grabbed the sleeve of your sweater and tugged you towards your room.
You stumbled after him with a giggle, stooping a little to give him easier access to guide you.
"Oh alright, small might. I guess we can wait until a decent hour." You stuck your tongue out at him playfully, "Still the upstanding citizen, making me sleep at a decent hour. No fun."
Collapsing into the blankets, you pat the bed beside you, pouting when Toshi stayed put.
"I have told you time and again, you're allowed on the bed, buddy." In response, Toshi settled by the door instead, taking up a guard position.
Rolling your eyes, you turned off the light and settled down. Tomorrow was worth looking forward to, so you would work hard to get some decent rest. The mystery that was your dog would have to wait until morning when you had coffee and a few hours of sleep under your belt.
~~~~~
Rays of sunlight lit the apartment with warm light. unfortunately, your alarm ruined the peaceful atmosphere with a loud tone. Groaning, you blearily peered at the screen for the off button. Switching it off, you dropped the phone back on your bed and rubbed at your eyes. It took you a few minutes to collect yourself and wake up fully. In that time, Toshi made his way over to your bedside and rested his chin on your hand. With a sleepy smile, you gently moved your hand and pet his head.
"Well good morning, sunshine. And how are you this morning?" you pet down his back grinning as he stretched with your motions. "Oh yeah, big stretch! Are you excited to go to the beach later?"
You hopped up, draped over your shoulders like a cape as you made your way to the kitchen, blanket trailing behind. You hummed to yourself as you started the coffee maker and checked that Toshi had fresh water. You were going to make today the best you possibly could. You didn't have days off often, so you were going to relish this one. Toshi trailed after you, always in petting distance as he watched you go about your morning routine. It was a cozy scene, very domestic and soft. Placing your phone on the counter, you turned on one of your playlists as you worked. Swaying lightly, to the chorus of one of your favorites, you pat your thighs, indicating for Toshi to jump up. He obliged and you held his paws, crouching a little to dance with him as you sang along to your music.
"Oh, you're so sweet that my teeth are gonna fall out, I'll get cavities in every single one. Taking weekly trips to my dentist, But I know that it's worth it because when I tasted strawberry Mentos, I knew you were the one!"
Laughing you let him go and kissed the top of his head before turning back to the task at hand, preparing food to take to the beach. Music continued to play in the background and Toshinori was once again struck by how much there was to love about you. Each of your little mannerisms made his heart flutter and he wished he were human so he could tease you about it. Watch you either deny it with flustered blush or pout and tell him compliments weren't allowed. Oh, the compliments he longed to voice. Tilting his head, he watched you set your bag of food aside with a pleased smile.
"Food is all set, now I just have to get myself ready. Stay here, I'll be back soon. Don't you go putting your nose in that bag, you hear me? Those are for later." Making a gesture between your eyes and his, you slipped into your bedroom, presumably to change into a swimsuit and swim slip.  He watched the door close with amusement, enjoying your antics.
~~~~~~ It was a hot day. The sun was high in the sky by the time the two of you got to the beach. There was a pleasant breeze that offset the heat a little, but you were still excited to get into the water and cool off. Gentle waves lapped at the shore and you were pleased to find a little hideaway beach that not many knew about. Without the crowds, you had an unhampered view of the waves and a quiet shoreline all to yourself. You unclipped Toshi's leash, a mischievous glint in your eyes.
"Alright boy, race you to the water!" Before he could fully process your words, you were sprinting for the water. He quickly took off after you, easily making it to the water before you. He turned to face you right before you stumbled into the surf, giggles bubbling from your throat as you stood in the water, the tide tickling your ankles with cold.
You stood in the surf for a few moments more, enjoying the soft sand beneath your feet and the salty fresh air. You closed your eyes and inhaled deeply, relaxing. That is until you were splashed that is.
Gasping, you whirled around to find Toshi happily trotting around in the water, sending droplets flying as he jumped around.
"Toshi! Not nice!" Despite your protests, you were smiling and your laughing tone gave you away. Wading out of the water, you set your stuff aside, slipping off your now dam covering to reveal your swimsuit. Once you were sure everything was far enough away from the water to be safe, you slipped off your sandals and flung them to the side before running back towards the water. It was too late that Toshi noticed you were coming right for him. Before he knew it, you had thrown yourself into the water next to him, drenching him in saltwater.
You quickly surfaced before laughing at his sorry state. "Well, that's what you get for splashing! See how you like it!"
If he could have smirked, he would have. Was that a challenge? Toshi thought so. Hopping up on his back legs, he quickly brought his paws down, hopping in the water and sending waves and waves of water over you as you shrieked in surprise.
You spent the rest of your morning like this, playing with Toshi or simply swimming and enjoying the water. After a while of laying on your back and floating, you decided to head back to shore where Toshi was waiting. He was getting hungry, and you were too if you were being honest. Twisting in the water, you started to head for shore. What you weren't accounting for was the clump of seaweed below your feet. At first, it was simple brushes against your ankles that made you shiver, but it quickly turned into a problem. Meters from shore, the once gentle touch of the kelp became an anchor around your foot.
You began swimming with a growing sense of panic, heart rate jumping as you stayed in place rather than progressing. You were no longer comforted by the thought of such a secluded beach. You were starting to get scared as you were unable to kick free of the sea foliage.
On the shore, Toshi pricked up his ears and his blood ran cold when he heard your voice call out, voice pitched with fear.
"Someone, help me! Please! "
As you panicked, the gentle waves you had been enjoying before now rolled over you, causing you to sputter as you tried to keep above water. Toshi wasted no time and ran into the water, legs churning as he desperately tried to reach you. When he saw your head disappear under the water for a moment, his fear became even more pointed. He angrily wished he was in his human form so he could get to you faster. And with that, a hot burning filled his entire being before his vision went black for a moment. Once everything came back into focus, he could feel One for All buzzing through his body. He didn't have time to question it, and before he could even think, his body was moving on its own. using One for all, he propelled himself through the water like a torpedo. He curled his body around you as he reached you and burst from the water, kelp trailing after you, wrenched free by his speed. Before you knew it, you were back on the beach, dazed, confused, and gulping down air.
Toshi carefully placed you on your beach towel, large hand gently patting your back as you coughed and tried to figure out what just happened. Sure you had seen it, but that doesn't mean you could believe it.
"(Y/N), are you alright? Are you hurt anywhere?" The booming voice caught you by surprise and reminded you that this was all real. Maybe.
"I'm, I'm alright now. Thanks." Your voice was hoarse from the saltwater and your almost drowning. Looking up at Toshi, any more words died in your throat and you whipped around to look at the ground as your coughs became more violent. Not only was your dog a human now, but he was also naked. Toshinori, bless him, hadn't seemed to notice yet, only concerned with your health at the moment.
Waving your hand in his direction to indicate you were alright, you carefully stood and offered him the towel you had been sitting on. He furrowed his brow in confusion before noting your clearly averted eyes and bright red cheeks.
"Oh, um, of course. Sorry about that!" He took the towel quickly, a blush of his own covering his cheeks.
Once you were sure you could look again, you finally let the whole experience settle in. Looking at your hero, you couldn't help the unbelieving laugh that left your mouth.
"Allmight. I was saved, by my number one favorite hero, who just so happened to be my dog! " hugging your middle, you couldn't stop the shivering that overtook you. Looking back at him you pinched yourself., testing if you were really awake or if you had actually drowned.
Toshi jolted, hand outreached as if to stop you, alarmed by your actions.
"Maybe we should get you to a hospital, after all, you're beginning to scare me." His blue eyes were filled with concern, his iconic smile gone as worry turned the corners of his lips down.  "You're shivering. The adrenaline is affecting you. Come on. We should either get you home or to the hospital."
"Home. That's right. You lived with me. " An embarrassing whine escaped your lips as you scrubbed at your face anxiously.  He carefully took your wrist and pulled it away from your face.
"It's alright (Y/N). You're safe now because I am here. Just breathe. In, and out. Alright? Breathe with me, darling."
You locked eyes with him and mirrored his breaths, gradually calming down. After you were back to breathing normally, a wave of exhaustion hit.
"I think I'm ok now, Allmight. Thank you for-" He raised his hand and cut you off gently.
"Toshinori. It's Toshinori Yagi. "
You looked up at him with confusion and your face once again flushed when you met his gaze. He was looking at you with such a soft and tender expression. It didn't fail to make your heart skip a beat. The hand not clasping the towel closed around his waist rose to meet your face. His large hand held the side of your face so gently like you were something precious.  When he spoke again, his voice was soft.
"I know you're confused. Let's get home and then I promise I'll tell you everything. Is that ok, darling?"
You nodded, leaning into his warmth. This would have to be some explanation, but for now, you were content to be alive and cared for.

Note
if you're still taking animal suggestions for your rescue series, my suggestion for snipe would be a western hognose snake!
Oh my goodness! That is perfect for him! Thank you so much for the suggestion! I'll see if I can add him to my list!

The Rescue: BNHA x Fem! Reader- Dusty Chinchilla
The rescue intro: here
You laughed as she led you back into the main section of the store, weaving through cages and various animal supplies. She quickly deposited her bunny into a glass enclosure before ducking out of view. She popped up a moment later as she scanned the cages in front of her for something specific. While she looked, you wandered the store. There were so many enclosures with fascinating animals in them. You had made your way to the rodent section when the fairly quiet chattering of the animals kicked up a notch accompanied by a high pitched barking noise. The tank that housed the seemingly angry animal was pushed towards the back, away from the other animals. You were a bit concerned about the noise and Inko's nonreaction to it, so you decided to check it out. Just in case there was something that needed to be dealt with.
You were quite surprised to find the animal that was making the noise was a Chinchilla. He was screaming across the aisle at what looked to be a black snake. He was looking directly at the tank across the way and making irritated barking noises, pressed against the glass. He was really cute, a kind of grey-blue color, and besides that, he was the fluffiest animal you had ever seen. But man could you tell he was angry about something.
You knelt in front of the glass, shivering lightly as the thin material of your work pants did little to shield you as your knees met the cold tile of the floor. A small smile tugged on the corner of your lips as you observed him. The animal was quick to notice you, his curiously red eyes zeroing in on you as he went dead silent. You pouted and tilted your head as you looked him over.
"Aww, did I interrupt your tantrum?"
Your teasing words were met with silence for a beat before the rodent's little hands found their way to his neck, scratching in an aggravated way that immediately made you wince.
"aww, no honey, don't do that. That can't be good for you." You sprang up and waved Inko over, concerned about the little animal.
Inko pulled her phone away from her ear for a beat to acknowledge you before hurriedly hanging up and heading your way.
"what's wrong dear?"
You gestured to the angry chinchilla with distress.
"He's so stressed out! Is there anything we can do for him?"
Inko bit her lip, staring at the animal with pity but also a fair amount of annoyance.
"Tomura does that. I could get him a cone in order to stop, but he'll work himself into a tizzy trying to get it off. Not to mention he hates being handled. Come, I'll take you to see the other pets."
You paused as she began to walk away, leaving him just not sitting well with you. Glancing back at the angry creature, you couldn't help the wave of concerned curiosity that swept over you.
"If I walk away now, is there much hope someone will take him?"
Inko looked back at you, wringing her hands nervously as she thought it over.
"He's temperamental. It would be difficult to place him."
A beat of silence passed as you pondered her words.
"I'll take him." As you said the words, you saw the Chinchilla stop scratching from your peripheral vision.
Inko grimaced before taking a deep breath and offering you a gentle smile.
"You have a lot of compassion. I should have known you'd be interested in our more troubled pets. Let me make a call and get you some supplies. It's the least I can do.  I'll be right back."
As she turned to find the supplies you'd need, you focused back on the tank.
Tomura, as Inko had called him, was watching you with an intensity that made you fidget in place a little.  His tiny hands had stopped their scratching and were frozen against his neck. He didn't move until you stepped closer to the tank, eyes now level with him as red met (e/c).
"Hey little guy, everything's going to be alright now. I'm busting you out of this joint!"
He was scowling. You didn't know rodents could scowl, but that's definitely the vibe you were picking up from him.
Tomura was confused, absolutely seething, but also confused. Not only was he trapped in this ridiculous body, but now he was being treated like a common animal, a pet to be owned! This was nowhere near what his sensei had planned for him and he couldn't enact his plans in this form. It was utterly infuriating. He decided he would do whatever was in his power to make you regret taking pity on him. How dare you make fun of him! Were you actually trying to play hero with him. think you could save him from being left behind? How naive.
While he was throwing a mental temper tantrum, you were watching with amusement. His anger couldn't help but be a little funny to you, especially now that he wasn't scratching anymore. What did a Chinchilla have to be angry about?  You wanted to reach in and reassure him, but you had a good feeling he'd bite you if you put your hand anywhere near him. You'd have to work your way up to that in time.
"Don't be too upset, I'll make sure to take good care of you. Also, you won't have to fight with that snake again! He'll be far away."
Tomura seemed to pause to think about your words. He supposed that at least one good thing would come from this arrangement. The ability to talk to the other humans affected by the quirk that had caused the animal mishap was both a blessing and a curse. Dabi taunted him constantly, taking immense pleasure from his annoyance. While some of the heroes had attempted conversations, he was quick to shut them down. However, that didn't stop the thin golden retriever from checking on him daily, which he'd be glad to be away from. Perhaps he could find a way to escape once he was out of the store? Maybe this ordeal could be a good thing. This train of thought calmed him considerably.
All too quickly for Shigaraki's liking, Mrs. Midoriya was back with a cage and several supplies as well as a carrier. Your eyes widened at the wagon she had loaded for you. Chinchillas needed quite a few things to keep them healthy, you noted. You would have to do some research before bed. You narrowed your eyes in concentration as Inko went to get Shigaraki, wanting to copy her method so you didn't hurt him accidentally.
The kind shopkeeper was surprised when the usually volatile rodent stayed calm and still as she moved him from the tank to a carrier. Once the door was securely shut, she offered the wagon to you. This worried her slightly, but her quick call with Nezu assured her that things would work out.
"There you go, dear. This should be everything you need for now. Hopefully, he doesn't give you much trouble. He's an angry little rascal, but I'm sure he just needs a little extra love and care. I think you're up to the challenge."
You nodded excitedly and cradled the carrier close to your chest, briefly peeking in to smile at your new pet.
"Are you sure you can give me all this? How much do I owe you?" You were struck with sudden concern. All these supplies must be expensive.
Inko simply laughed and waived your concerns.
"It's alright. On the house. It's the least we can do considering you're taking care of Tomura for us."
You nodded and adjusted your grip, shielding the carrier with your coat as you exited the store. It wasn't until you were half a block away that you realized she had said we.
You decided it wasn't a thought worth exploring right now, especially because you had to get Tomura somewhere warm soon. He did have the fluffiest fur you'd ever seen, but you wouldn't wish this cold on anyone. You hugged his carrier to your chest, stubbornly plodding on, wagon handle cold in your other hand. You quickly regretted rushing out without gloves that morning.
Any complaints died on your tongue when your apartment building came into view. Excitement was the main emotion filling you when you remembered that the heater would be on when you entered. When the door slid open, you gave a sigh of relief as a wave of warm air hugged you. Pulling the wagon inside, you shut the door and carefully placed the carrier on the coffee table. You shed your jacket and sat criss-cross on the floor, elbows resting on the table and chin in your hands as you gazed into the carrier.
"Sorry about the bumpy ride, but we're home now. I'll get your cage set up in a jiffy! I want to get you settled so you can relax. No more anxious scratching, okay?"
Tomura simply narrowed his eyes at you from the corner of the carrier where he had retreated when he felt the cage level out. He didn't care what you did, so long as he would be left alone. He had plans to make in order to escape, and that meant you needed to leave him alone.
Tilting your head, you smiled and blew him a kiss before hopping up to paw through the supplies you had been given. The wagon was well stocked. A box rested at the bottom that held all the pieces you needed for the cage. Also included was a bag of timothy hay, pellets, bedding, some treats, food and water bowls, and exercise wheel, a little structure for him to hide in, wood and mineral chews, a bag of dust, a cool little bowl for the dust bath, and a variety of toys that you hoped he enjoyed. It looked like Mrs. Midoriya had really thought of everything!
You focused on setting up, humming to yourself as you worked. Cycling through a variety of video game themes, you jumped as you heard the door rattling on the carrier. You turned back to look just as Tomura retreated further into the cage. Apparently, he had gotten closer to the door and accidentally jostled it in the process.
"I'll be done with your cage soon, dusty boy. Then you can stretch your legs to your heart's content."
He watched you get back to work, not realizing that it was the humming that had drawn his attention. Tomura didn't have a high opinion of most people, but he liked video games. And apparently so did you. His opinion of you had risen. Not by much, but a tiny bit.
Once the cage was done, you were faced with the difficult task of transferring your new pet into it. Hopefully, he would be as calm getting taken out of the carrier as he was being put into it. As luck would have it, it was as easy as putting the entrance of the cage against the opening of the carrier with both doors open. It didn't take long for Shigaraki to scurry inside and hide in the little structure that was there specifically for that purpose.
After shutting the cage, you allowed yourself to stretch. Rolling your neck yielded quiet cracks as the tension of the day caught up to you. You gave the cage a tired smile before standing.
"Sleep well Tomura. Tomorrow is a new day."
With that, you turned off the light and retreated to your bedroom. Once you finished your nightly routine, you settled into bed. For a while, you thought about how best to care for Tomura. He would be difficult to get to open up, but you were determined to love him and make him feel cared for. The anger he carried might be from a past owner, and you were determined to help him. Consumed by a fluffy comforter and assortment of pillows, you let sleep carry you away from consciousness.
~~~~~ The first few weeks were frustrating for all involved. It was definitely a learning curve when it came to caring for Shigaraki. He was antisocial at best and antagonistic at worst. Not to mention he was too smart for his own good in your opinion. He was quick to figure out the doors on the cage, despite his lack of opposable thumbs. This led to quite a few frantic searches on your part. To his dismay though, doors and windows were absolutely beyond his capabilities in this form. That is the predicament he was currently facing when you found him in the morning when you had been getting ready for work.
"Tomu! What on Earth are you doing on the window sill! You're going to get hurt, silly boy!"
Swooping in, you deftly lifted his squirming body into your arms. You gave him a peck on the forehead and he froze. He was never sure how to respond to your affection, so he simply malfunctioned. Error 417, Tenko.exe is unable to meet the requirements for this emotion. You giggled at his reaction and peppered his soft little head with more kisses before carefully placing him back in his cage. Once he was back inside, he put as much distance between the two of you as he was allowed before furiously scratching at his neck with agitation.
You pouted in distress, far from happy about his reaction. You were giving him lots of attention, but it was a slow process to get him to trust you, still the freeze-ups were better than him outright pulling away.
"Tomu, stop that. That's not good for you! You're going to hurt yourself."
His little paws twitched but slowed. Your voice distracted him simply because of the tone you were using. The habit didn't seem to annoy or disgust you as others would often say. Instead, your voice was filled with distress, as if the thought of harm coming to him hurt you as well. This was not a sentiment Shigaraki was used to in the slightest, nor did he know what to do with it.
It took him some time to notice you had left for work. He had been so lost in thought that he hadn't noticed your departure. He was unnerved to discover this bothered him. He wasn't sure why, but he had grown used to your overly affectionate presence. It was infuriating, but he was more content when you were around. Having someone to interact with who purposefully sought him out was nice, even if he told himself it was annoying. The door to the cage slid open with practiced ease. He was irritated by his own reaction, but he didn't want to think about what that meant. The best course of action in his mind was to find a distraction.
As a human, he found himself drawn to video games. He was quite put out to discover your lack of gaming supplies, especially after all the tunes he heard from you that were popular games he enjoyed. Still,  considering his minuscule form, there was no way he could have indulged anyway, controllers are made for human-sized hands after all. Wandering the apartment, he allowed himself to take in your decorations. This was the first time he had escaped from the cage without the intent to find a way to escape the apartment. Now he was able to take everything in without distraction. You had few decorations, almost as if you were scared to make the place your own. He had experienced that many times when he shuffled from hideout to hideout. Not that he had many possessions of his own anyway, his most prized possession was his computer, as it was his escape. Sensei allowed for his gaming habit, purely because of the strategy it taught. For Tomura, it was less of a strategic play than it was a chance to be someone else. Someone people trusted and would treat with respect. The more noticeable and stronger he was in the virtual world, the more people paid him attention. No one would ignore him then.
He shook himself out of his thoughts, continuing to explore. Once he reached your room, he let out a disgusted sound. Of course, you were a hero supporter. He was tempted to see if he could reach the Allmight poster on your wall so he could shred it to pieces. Unfortunately, it was too high of a goal, so he contented himself with chewing a hole in your Allmight hoodie instead when he found it unattended in the livingroom.
That was how you found him when you came back from work. The long day had clearly worn you down. Your hair was messy from where you had run your fingers through it too many times. Hanging your jacket by the door, you placed a small package on the counter before collapsing onto the sofa next to him. Pausing in his attempt to massacre the article of clothing, he was surprised to see you hadn't noticed him. Your eyes were closed and you were clearly exhausted. A groan of weariness and pain escaped from your lips before you finally turned your attention to him. The look on your face was supposed to make him feel smug. Instead, he felt something akin to pain, a raw sort of scraping feeling in the pit of his stomach that made him feel smaller than he'd ever been. He hated it. He never wanted to see that expression on you again if it made him feel like this.
"Tomu, how could you... That's one of my favorites. " Your tone was quiet and disappointed like you wanted to be angry but just didn't have the energy. You took the hoodie from him and pulled him into your lap, setting the jacket aside. It surprised both of you when he let it happen. There was something about you today that he despised. This isn't how you usually acted. You were supposed to be mad! You were supposed to scold him and then make a joke about not knowing what to do with him. He didn't like your quiet, it wasn't you and it wasn't right. His paws rose to his neck as his confused thoughts roared.
A choked sort of whimper came from your chest, all the stress from your day and the concern for him coming together in one pitiful noise. He froze at the sound. Your fingers carefully gripped his paws and moved them away from his neck.
"You stop that. Everything's alright, you're safe here and I won't let anything hurt you, even if it's you. "
To say you had a bad day was an understatement. The cafe had been severely understaffed and you were worked ragged. Most of the customers were not understanding and having worked another hard shift the day before, you were at the end of your rope. When you had finally been allowed to leave for the night, you had been exhausted and dead on your feet. Stopping at a bakery on the way home, you allowed yourself a small indulgence in the form of a single cupcake.  On your way to the apartment, you had almost been involved in a quirk incident by some thief nearby. All this and when you finally were able to get home and relax, your pet had put a pretty noticeable hole in your favorite hoodie. It was one of the first things you had purchased for yourself since you had moved to Japan so it was incredibly important to you. You nearly cried when you saw the damage that had been done. You wanted to scream and rant, but looking down at Tomura, you knew you couldn't be upset with him, not really. He was acting out becuase you weren't home. You were fairly sure he had some separation anxiety. Any anger or hard scolding would do more harm than good. Instead, you focused on what you could do to help him instead. Poor thing was obviously stressed about something. Maybe he could learn from this and not act out to get your attention.
After you were sure he was done scratching, you put his paws down. He was calmer, but you still wanted to be sure he was okay. You carefully ran your fingers through his fur, offering what comfort you could through your touch. He let himself get lost in the sensation, the yelling in his mind quieting to whispers. You were singing now, words washing over him as your voice lilted, a distraction for you as much as for him. He vaguely recognized the tune from a videogame but didn't let his thoughts linger on it, rather enjoying the soft quiet that had come over him.
It was a slow realization, one that took quite some time to get through his thick skull, but that night Tomura realized that he didn't hate you. Far from it. He had grown fond of you without realizing it. He didn't like when you were upset, especially when he was the cause. If he could stop you from ever looking so sad and tired and pained, he would do it in a heartbeat. He told himself it was because your face made him feel strange, but he never stopped to wonder why he was upset that you were upset. Still, this was the start of something that would only grow over the time spent together.
You fell asleep on the couch that night, comforted by the soft fur under your fingertips and the repetitive motion that came with petting him. The stress of the day piled up on your shoulders and the weight buried you so much that gentle waves of exhaustion flooded your mind. Sleep overtook you with little hesitation.
The next day, you awoke with a crick in your neck and pleasant warmth in your lap.  Looking down at Tomura, you couldn't help the fond smile that insisted it makes itself known on your face. He had never willingly let you hold him until last night. And he had stayed. That spoke volumes about how he felt. Your fingers carefully caressed the top of his head as those pretty red eyes slowly opened.
"Good morning, my sweet dusty boy. Did you sleep alright?"
Shigaraki knew he should get up, but he pushed those thoughts aside. Sensei wasn't here right now to scold him, and he was tired. He could let himself rest in the lap of the pretty lady for just a little while longer and let you call him yours. You made him feel safe and cared for, something he craved. There was this foreign warmth in his chest that he had never had before. But oddly, he wasn't concerned about it. Perhaps it was a powerup he hadn't encountered before. His senses were dulled by the warmth and he didn't feel like moving, the sensation too pleasant to give up. Once your fingers found the fur on this head, his eyes quickly slipped shut again in bliss.
No one had ever done this for him. Physical touch was always some form of discipline, he didn't understand what others gained from it when it was displayed in his dating sim games. But now, he was hooked. Your fingers were so gentle, he didn't know humans could be so gentle. Idly he wondered what your fingers would feel like against his human skin. Would you still be this gentle? Would you still handle him like he was something precious?
would you be scared of him?
His eyes snapped open when he realized where he let his thoughts wander. He couldn't allow thoughts like that, sensei had drilled into him that thoughts like that were a weakness. But still... he burned to know the answers.
"What's got you so quiet, pretty boy?"
Humming, you stood, Tomura securely in your arms. As you headed to his cage, you noticed the box from the bakery you had abandoned on the counter. Switching directions you carefully placed him on the island.
"Want to know a secret?"
The chinchilla curiously smelled the air, whiskers twitching as he smelled the sweet treat you had opened. You gave him a conspiratorial smile before sticking a single candle into the dessert and lighting it.
"It was my birthday yesterday. The first one I've spent alone. Well, you're here, so I guess it wasn't actually spent alone. Thanks for being here for me when no one else was."
Shigaraki felt that scraping feeling in his stomach again. Birthdays weren't things he considered important, but in games, they were treated like great occasions. He had upset you on a day you were supposed to be happiest. This didn't sit well with him, but your words.... they were important. He was here for you. He liked the sound of that.
"Thanks for yesterday, Tomu. I know you don't like being handled, but you let me pet you. I kind of needed that after the day I had. Even though you put a hole in my hoodie, I'm still so so grateful to have you."
Your smile was one of the loveliest things he had ever seen. The warmth from earlier was back and fiercer than ever, overcoming the bitter feeling from before. Even with all the stupid and mean things he had done while under your care, you refused to hate him. In fact, it seems you did the opposite. These thoughts rested heavily on his mind but he let them settle, not wanting to disturb the growing warmth that only you had ever triggered.
Singing softly to yourself, you wished yourself a happy birthday and blew out the candle. Shigaraki took a mental screenshot of that moment, where your smile made all the stress fade away and you were simply happy to be there with him.
~~~~~
Since your birthday, you were pleased to find your little dusty gremlin was warming up to you. It had started slow. He was aloof tentative with you before he softened again. Now he let you hold him all the time and even actively searched you out. Spending time with him was easy and coming home to him was the highlight of your day. Long shifts at your stupid job were going to be the death of you, but it was worth it for those moments spent with Tomura. You had taken to talking with him as if he could actually understand you. Lying on the floor or the couch, you would tell him about your day, absently petting him as dreams and trials alike spilled from your lips. Sometimes, he even gave you reactions that were so human that you had to stop and point it out with a giggle. He hated when you called him cute, but he didn't get all snippy like when you had first gotten him. Now it was just a little annoyed huff and he was back to listening intently. You treasured this time with him and he seemed to look forward to it too, even when you talked about heroes and how much you looked up to them.
~~~~
You had long since given up trying to keep Shigaraki in his cage. The doors were now left open so he could roam as he pleased. He waited for you in the living room, excited to see you after a long day. He had noticed you had been working more hours recently and always came home tired. The way your eyes lit up when you would enter the room and see him made that pleasant warmth glow brighter.  He had given up denying it at this point. The only logical explanation was that he cared about you. Without his noticing, you had raised his affection points, and now... He was hooked. He would do anything for you to make you happy. Sensei would call it a weakness, but Tomura saw it as strength. Adding you to his party as his second in command, his player 2, would benefit both of you. Still, he wasn't human anymore, something he was becoming more and more bitter about as days passed.
He perked up from his thoughts at the sound of your key in the lock at the door. It was late, he noticed. How rude of you to keep him waiting for so long. Crossing the room quickly, he waited impatiently for the smile you always greeted him with. Unfortunately, it was absent as you trudged inside. One of your coworkers told the boss you would cover her shift without confirming it with you first. This led to a frantic text in the morning saying you were late. Because of this, you had gotten chewed out at work because of course, he believed your coworker over you.
You were too wrapped up in your thoughts to even offer Tomura a greeting as you trudged past him. You made sure he had fresh food and water in his cage before throwing yourself on the couch, not having the energy to make it to your room.
Shigaraki quickly scurried over, face set in annoyance by your attitude. He wondered what on Earth had happened to make you ignore him. Going through a mental checklist, he was positive it wasn't something that he had done, so it must have been something that happened while you were out.
Your gaze found his as he peeked over the seat of the couch at you and the tears you had been holding back started to slip. His ears flattened in alarm. Tears? Were you hurt? Hopping up onto the couch beside you, he nosed around your torso, looking for the source of pain. Your arms found his body and you gently curled yourself around him for comfort.
"I don't know what I'm going to do, Tomu. They fired me today."
He stiffened at your words. Even he could see the stress you put on yourself to keep your stupid job. You had no support from family, lived alone, and worked to make sure he was taken care of. You couldn't afford to lose your source of income. It pained him that he could do nothing to help.  Instead of wiping your tears away like he longed to do, he nuzzled against you, a reminder that he was there and you weren't alone, he wasn't going anywhere. Emotions were confusing, and while he still didn't know how to react, he knew that sometimes you had just had to get all the emotions out before anything could get better.
"I'll make sure you're taken care of Tomu. I promise I won't let anything happen to you."
Your breathing slowed gradually after your declaration, energy all but gone as you surrendered to sleep. Shigaraki was in awe of you nonetheless. All this time, you were upset about the possibility of losing him. He was important to you and that mattered to him.
He carefully freed himself from your grip to attempt to drag a blanket over you. Hopping onto the floor, he looked back at your sleeping face. His heart ached to see the dried tear tracks on your face, but he was pleased to see you looked more peacefull now. The warmth he usually felt around you seemed to grow in strength, normally a warm glow, it was turning into an inferno that spread out from his chest. The sensation of liquid fire filling his veins was vaguely uncomfortable and was accompanied by a tinging that turned to pinpricks of static. When he felt like he couldn't take the feeling anymore, it disappeared with a barely heard pop sound.  His limbs felt heavy and as the disorientation faded, he came to an important realization. He was human again. He quickly brought his hands up to his face, he winced at the dry texture under his eyes and the stinging pain that came with the smile that formed. He was back to normal.
A sudden light distracted him from his thoughts.. Your phone lit up with a message displayed on an Allmight lock screen that made him roll his eyes.  He was careful to keep his pinky up as he grabbed your phone from where it  had fallen on the floor. The message displayed was one that set his teeth on edge.
'You left some of your things in the office. You have until tomorrow at 4 to get them or I throw them away. And make sure you have someone cover your shift for tomorrow. Just because you're fired, doesn't mean you get to screw us with your shifts. '
Few things made Tomura as angry as the message from your exboss did. How dare they treat you as if you had inconveinienced them by being fired! His player 2 was levels above this, this slime. How dare he talk to you like that? White hot anger filled his veins as emotions overpowered him. His fingers twitched as he resisted the urge to scratch his neck. He decided what his first quest should be with his body back.
He didn't notice your wide eyes peering at his back from your spot on the couch. You had noticed his warmth leave you earlier and watched his transformation with stunned shock. You quickly snapped your eyes shut when he started to turn back to you, coaching your expression into one of false sleep.  A blanket was carefully tucked around you. His fingers ghosted over your cheek, gently brushing the hair from your face with a featherlight touch. You only allowed yourself to open your eyes again when you heard your bedroom door shut. Your pet... He was a man. Not only that, but he was a famous villain. You could barely process this. Your gaze jumped up when he exited your room, donning your largest pair of sweatpants and a black tank top that rode high on his hips. He grabbed the closest jacket, the allmight hoodie you were so fond of, and he slipped out the front door.
There was no way you were letting him get away so easily. He was going to get himself caught out there! You grabbed your phone and hurriedly put on shoes before following him as quickly as you could. It was a miracle you were able to keep up. The man may be skinny and barefoot, but man did he have long legs. It took a while to notice, but you were surprised to see the route was quite familiar to you. Originally, you had thought he'd be headed to a hide out, but instead he led you to your workplace.
Shigaraki looked up at the cafe with distaste. You had worked here a given your all, yet they somehow had the audacity to fire you. It appeared he was right on time. The owner was exiting the building, having finished closing for the night. A dark grin spread over Tomura's face as he closed in on the man, hand extended with full intent to dust the man who had caused his player 2 to be upset. What he wasn't expecting was a hug from behind, effictively halting him from moving forward. He glanced down with irritation before grabbing a wrist from the interlocked hands around his waist. Whoever dared to stop him was a very unlucky soul. He dragged them into an allyway out of sight and whipped around to face them. He froze almost comically when he saw you staring back at him with anxious eyes.
"(y/n)? What are you doing here? " He pulled away from you as if he had been stung, fingers leaving your skin with lightning speed. He could have hurt you, one more finger and you would have been gone. The horror of what he could have done left  his fingers twitching for his neck.
You looked over the man, taking in his pale hair, the red eyes you always thought were so pretty, and the thin frame hidden in an oversized hoodie. You had seen him on tv and in news reports, but they didn't do him justice. He may be a villain, but he was yours. The pieces came together and you let a soft smile form.
"You were after my boss, right?"
He gawked at you. He had almost killed you, and that was what you were concerned about?
"Are you an idiot, girl? You could very likely die by my hands any second. Now is not the time to worry about that insignificant man you just sacrificed yourself for."
You shook your head, hands up in a placating gesture.
"Tomura... calm down. I know you wouldn't hurt me. Sorry for startling you, but as nice as the sentiment is, i'd prefer you didn't murder anyone for me."
He narrowed his eyes.
"You know who I am... You think you could take on a villain by yourself? So arrogant. "
He knew he was self sabotaging, but he had to prove a point. Your reckless behavior could have gotten you killed. Had it been any other villain.. you'd be dead. He needed you to realize the danger you were in. Sure, all he wanted to do in that moment was pull you into his arms, but you should be afraid.
"I do know who you are. I know exactly who you are. You..."
You took a step forward. With each move forward he took a hesitant step back, until it was him with his back against the wall.
"You, are my sweet dusty boy. You are there for me when I'm lowest."
You reach up, one hand moving to cup his cheek as he watches you with wide, uncertain eyes.
"You are mine, and you wouldn't hurt me. Couldn't hurt me."
As you hold his face, you can feel the tension, but your last words to him break something in him. He leans into your touch, letting himself be held in his true form for the first time.
"I know what your quirk does Tomura, but you don't have to worry."
Confusion pools in those ruby eyes before your other hand finds his, all five fingers finding his. A moment of horror filled panic fills his eyes at the touch before he flinches back.
You stepped back and calmly held up your hand for him to see.
"I basically consider myself quirkless, but... I do have one ability. Other people's quirks don't work on me."
You were expecting his relieved expression. What you weren't expecting was the sudden kiss now desperately pressed against your lips. You melted into it, hands going to hold him back as he crushed you to him like a lifeline.
He only relinquished his hold once the need for oxygen demanded it. You looked up at him with that smile that made him so happy.
"Hey, I promised it would be okay, remember? I wouldn't break my promise to you. "
The Rescue: BNHA x Fem! Reader- Newfoundland Dog
She gently placed Izuku into a glass cage before pulling you to a back door labeled "Dogs," the Golden retriever slipping in behind you before you closed the door.
Upon entering, you were greeted by lots of barking, the dogs obviously not using their indoor voices. The wall of sound left you a bit dazed as you took in the activity in front of you.  You were actually surprised by the variety back here. There was a husky, Pitbull, and even a German Shepard. The room was rather large and open for them to interact with potential owners, various dog toys strewn across the floor with the dog kennels to the back.
The animals seemed to have an unspoken respect for Inko. They made sure to get out of the way as she walked or stop playing long enough for her to pass by before continuing their fun. It was amusing to watch. You followed her path with your eyes before she came to a stop next to two big dogs. You paled as she led the bigger animal over to you.
"Here he is, (y/n)! This is Taishiro!"
Inko looked absolutely tiny compared to the behemoth of a dog beside her.
"Are you sure that's a dog? I'm fairly certain that is, in fact, a bear."
You eyed the golden-brown dog cautiously a bit intimidated by his size and the fact that if he so chose, any walk would become a drag with no contest on who was stronger.
Inko laughed and ruffled the fur on his head.
"He's a dog, just a big one. This big boy is a Newfoundland. Sure he can have a bite if he's in danger, but he's really just a big teddy bear. He's a sweetheart."
Tai cocked his head to the side and looked you over as Inko continued to reassure you.  He was skeptical about this whole being adopted out thing but with no foreseeable human future for him, he would have to put his trust in Inko and Nezu. You were obviously a bit intimidated by him, but he hoped he could prove to you that you had nothing to worry about.
You offered him a shy smile that quickly grew as he wagged his tail.
"see! He likes you! I'll go get some gear for you and you can get to know him a bit." Inko patted you on the shoulder before leaving to get supplies from the main half of the store, not noticing or electing to ignore your panicked look.
You swallowed nervously before looking back at Tai. He was waiting patiently for you to make the first move, not wanting to scare you off. You gave a nervous wave.
"Hey, Taishiro... I'm (y/n)."
He stepped forward and pushed his head into your offered hand, causing you to give a shaky laugh.
"Inko was right, you're not scary... sorry for misjudging you."
You began to pet him and were pleased when he stepped closer so you had easier access. He was so fluffy! He was a brown dog with golden tones in his fur and intense golden eyes. He was quite a big dog, big enough to bowl you over without much effort, but he was gentle with you.
Inko came back to find you sitting on the floor next to Tai, petting his stomach as he laid on his back for you. Your face was scrunched up in happiness as you talked to him, complimenting his behavior and telling him he was a good boy.  All too soon though, it was time to go. She made you promise to give updates over the phone before sending you on your way with the big dog.
~~~~~~~~
Taishiro was very confused when he woke up the next morning. After the accident that transformed him into a dog, he was used to the hustle and bustle of a crowded dog kennel. He was not used to the peace and quiet of your apartment. Usually, he would have been woken up early by Kirishima to spar, or as close as they could come to sparring in these forms. Still, he much preferred your couch to the kennels that were in the pet store.
"Morning sleepy head"
He looked up as you walked into the room, your uniform from yesterday traded for black shorts, a tank top, and a suspiciously familiar-looking yellow hoodie.
You sat down on the couch next to him and ruffled the fur on the top of his head.
"good morning Taishiro! Thanks for being a good boy and letting me sleep in."
He watched you intently, trying to place what about your outfit stuck out to him. He almost fell off the couch when he realized. You were wearing his merch. His pro hero merch. You had a Fatgum hoodie.
"what's up, do I have something on my jacket? "
You quickly searched the yellow material, a concerned crease between your eyes.
"I better not, this is my favorite hoodie..." You sighed with relief upon finding nothing and smiled back at Tai.
"Good news bub, all is good and my hoodie is safe. "
Had he been human, Tai would have been smirking. You had absolutely no idea who you were talking to and he found that hilarious. He was quite flattered that of all heroes, you had chosen him as your favorite.
You turned on the tv and settled onto the couch, pulling the hoodie close, your hands vanishing in the oversized sleeves. It was a good replica, he had to admit, but his real costume was a lot bigger. He took a moment and imagined what you would look like in it. He snorted lightly in amusement. You would be swimming in it. It would be really cute, but it was just a passing thought, seeing as he was a dog now and couldn't give you that opportunity. The cheerful mood he was in before slipped from him as the thoughts of his new life set in. He sunk onto the couch next to you.
You weren't sure what had changed, but you noticed that he seemed sadder somehow. Now that just wouldn't do. You carefully pulled his head into your lap and focused on petting him while some baking competition played on tv. The day passed in much the same way. You watched tv and made a commentary for him, occasionally looking down at him with a tut and an explanation of how the contestant went wrong.  It was early evening when you decided it was time for your relaxation to come to an end.
Tai was content and on the verge of sleep before you moved to get up. He wasn't having it and moved so more of him was in your lap, effectively trapping you on the couch. He was comfy gosh darn it.
You laughed and started to playfully shove at the mass of fur on your lap.
"Tai, get off me, you big galoot! I wanted to take you on a walk before sunset."
He begrudgingly removed himself from your lap and you skipped to your bedroom to change. As comfy as the hoodie and shorts combo was, it was still snowy from the night before. Tai was surprised with how quickly you had warmed up to him. As anxious as you were yesterday, any doubts about keeping him seemed totally gone. He hopped off the couch and settled by the door to wait for you. You were sweet, and he could see himself enjoying his time with you. Not to mention you obviously had good taste based on your choice of hero.
You emerged wearing Red riot leggings and a Suneater beanie. Tai was in awe of you. Not only were you his fan, but you also supported his protegees. The more he got to know you, the more he liked what he was seeing.
You grinned as you noticed his tail going a mile a minute.
"Ready to go, big fella?"
You clipped the leash onto his collar and took him outside.
~~~~~~ Tai quickly fell into a routine with you. You took him on a walk in the morning before work, Next, you had breakfast and then got ready for work. Tai was quickly learning to hate the time left alone. Back at the store, he was able to talk to the others, especially because he was able to talk to everyone hit by the quirk regardless of species. Now that he was left to his own devices, he didn't have that much to do.
One day while you were gone, he decided to properly explore the apartment. The living room was where he was most familiar, seeing as that's where you had him sleep. He hadn't gone into your room yet because he wanted to give you privacy, but... He was curious. He decided he might as well check it out. He pushed the door open with his nose and looked around with interest. His heart warmed at your choice of decor. You had several Fat Gum posters hanging on your walls as well as a few of Suneater and Red Riot as well. There was a singular All Might poster as well. It was a small room, seeing as you couldn't afford a large apartment. It was cozy though. Your bed was pushed into the far corner away from the door. It had many pillows, some stuffed animals, and what seemed to be a weighted blanket. He hopped onto the bed to get a better view. Your room smelled strongly of your favorite perfume and had a very cozy feeling. He had come to associate the smell of you with relaxation and safety, so it wasn't long before his eyes drifted closed.
When you came home two hours later, you weren't expecting the empty living room. Your first instinct was to panic and you started a frantic search. You scolded yourself internally, walking through your day to make absolutely sure he didn't have a chance to run away. You quickly ran to your room to grab a better jacket to go look for him. As soon as you burst through the door, you froze. He was sleeping, in your room. You gave a tired sigh and smacked your head against the door frame lightly for jumping to conclusions.
"You are so lucky you're cute because you just gave me a heart attack." You muttered to yourself, adrenaline fading. Stepping further into the room you threw your jacket over your desk chair and slipped off your shoes. You faceplanted onto the bed beside your bed, tired from the scare on top of the shift you just worked. What you didn't expect was Tai to feel the shift on the bed and subsequently roll over to cuddle with you. You suddenly had a face full of fur and a near 200-pound dog smothering you. You laughed painfully and shoved him off you, waking him in the process.
"Hey silly, try not to squish me, I still have to get you dinner, you still need me. You can make me into a  pancake later."
He stared at you in sleepy surprise as he slowly woke up. His first coherent thought was that he liked waking up to such a pretty smiling face. And you were offering to feed him? Bonus. Dog food was not appetizing as he still regained his taste from being a human. Still, there wasn't much he could do about it besides stealing human food from you when he had the chance. You would scold him, but he could tell you weren't really mad at him.
You scratched behind his ears and sat up, scooting up further on the bed so you could pet him more easily.
"You had me worried carebear. You usually greet me at the door. I was so scared you'd gone and run away."
You squished his face between your hands and kissed the top of his nose.
"I don't know what I would do if I ever lost you. You're really important to me, you know." You hugged his head to your chest and before peppering his ears and face with kisses.
Tai accepted the affection happily, but a part of him felt guilty for making you worry. Sure he was just your pet, but you really did love him at this point. He didn't like the spike of distress that coursed through him as you told him how upset you had been. He made a silent vow to himself not to make you worry again.
Little did he know that you would turn the tables on him later and he would be the worried one.
~~~~~
You had gotten sick. You weren't sure how, but you were fairly certain that a coworker had given you their cold. It wasn't that bad, but you were still fairly miserable. You woke up on your day off with a stuffy nose and throat feeling of sandpaper. It was far from pleasant.
You carefully slipped out of bed, careful to keep from waking Tai, who had taken to sleeping on your bed after you had invited him the first night when you thought he ran away.
While you would have liked nothing better than to lay in bed and wallow in how awful you felt, there were some errands that needed to be run. Sickness or not, you had to be up and moving today.
You got dressed in a simple Deku T-shirt and leggings before pulling on your fatgum hoodie, wanting to be comfy if you were going to face the masses. Pushing the sleeves up so they no longer covered your hands, you sat on your desk chair and mentally prepared yourself to leave the house. Just as you were putting on your shoes to leave, you heard Tai whine.
You gave him what you hoped was more smile than grimace and patted his head.
"Hey, bud. No walk until later. I don't feel too well. I'll make sure you get a short walk when I get back though. I have to go to the store first."
Tai was absolutely not having it. He could tell that you weren't feeling well by your miserable posture. Hunched in on yourself and wrapped in your comfort items with a red nose and bags under your eyes, you made for a pretty pitiful picture. He wasn't about to let you leave like that! You needed sleep. And soup. He wasn't sure how he would manage the second thing, but he was determined to make sure you took it easy today.
As soon as your hand reached the doorknob, you felt a warm body plant itself in front of you, effectively blocking the door.
"Carebear, I need to run errands. You've got to let me go out."
Tai made a disgruntled noise and stayed put, knowing that it would be a pain to move him and you currently did not have the strength.
You, of course, took his actions to mean something else.
"Are you sour because I said no walk till later? I promise as soon as I'm done with errands I'll be back and we can go for a short walk. If you're really upset about it we can go for a longer walk, but I still need to go run errands."
Tai just planted himself more firmly against the door and looked up at you with defiance shining in his eyes. He was not going to let you leave. Had he been human, he would have simply picked you up and brought you back to bed, but that wasn't an option. He would have to be creative.
Seeing as Tai didn't look like he was moving, you made a decision You stepped back and put your hands up in surrender. You turned around and started to make your way towards the couch.
"Fine, fine, I'll stay..."
Once you saw him trot back into the living room, you grabbed your stuff and booked it to the door, slamming it shut behind you before Tai could catch up. You grinned triumphantly at him through the living room window, cheeks glowing from exertion, but eyes bright with victory. Tai put his front paws against the window sill, staring at you with peeved disbelief. You had tricked him! He was just trying to look out for you. He gave you an unimpressed look before turning around and sitting with his back to the window, effectively giving you the cold shoulder.
You shook your head with a small smile before walking away, determined to go get your errands done quickly. You made a mental note to grab a treat for Tai to apologize for tricking him, he was still a good boy after all, albeit a salty one.
You returned that evening with several shopping bags, your energy all but spent. Slipping into the apartment, you had to take a moment to lean against the door for support. You frowned a little when Tai didn't greet you at the door but you didn't panic like last time. setting the groceries aside, you searched the apartment. Like last time, he was in your room. He wasn't asleep though. He sat in a corner of your room, lifting his head when you entered before standing and turning his back to you before sitting back down again.
"Awwww, still grumpy from this morning? I'm sorry carebear. I just had to get some things done I'm back now. I've got treats for you..."
You tried to coax him out of the corner, but he was resolute in his sulking. You pouted to yourself and headed back to the kitchen to work on dinner, deciding to give him his space.
As much as Tai wanted to be annoyed with you, he couldn't stay upset with you for long. Within ten minutes of your return, he was wandering out of the room to come see you. He told himself it was just to make sure you were alright, but really he admitted that he just missed you.
You hummed to yourself as best you could as you worked on dinner. It was supposed to be a really simple soup, but concentrating was becoming difficult with the headache that had made its presence know while you were out and about. That's why you weren't surprised when you cut yourself while chopping onions. You hissed in pain and instinctively shoved the offending digit into your mouth.
Tai was by your side in an instant, eyes wide with concern and body tensed.  You gave him a sympathetic look and removed the finger from your mouth to show him.
"It's okay boy, it wasn't a bad cut, it just startled me is all. I should have been paying more attention. I'll get it fixed up and finish dinner, then we can relax. Sound good?"
He relaxed a little bit, but you could tell he was still on edge. You quickly sanitized the cut and put a bandage on before finishing the soup and grabbing a bowl.
Once you sat down to eat, Tai was next to you, carefully examining your newly bandaged finger. Once he had deemed it worthy, he sat next to you, leaning against you.
After finishing your soup, you stretched and got up, sniffling pathetically as you started to get your jacket, preparing to take Tai on the walk you promised him.
He quickly hopped up and stopped you in your tracks, gaze fierce. You frowned in confusion and paused, not used to seeing him so intense.
" What's wrong buddy? I promised you a walk."
You were so oblivious sometimes and Tai was so done with being a dog. It was hard to properly convey his worry in this form. He decided since he couldn't outright tell you, he would have to show you. He stepped forward and snagged your sleeve cuff in his teeth before jerking it towards your room. You followed him with a puzzled expression, not quite sure what he was up to.
"Yes, this is my room. What did you want to show me? The bed? Why'd you bring me here?"
Tai released your sleeve and jumped onto the bed before grabbing the back of your shirt and tugging. You quickly lost your balance and toppled onto the plush surface with an undignified squeak of protest.
"Taishiro, what on Earth are you doing?"
He paid no mind to your question and instead grabbed your blanket. He dragged it over your protesting form before laying across your stomach so you couldn't get up. That ought to keep her, he grouched to himself.
You struggled for all of one minute before accepting your fate with a mumbled insult about him being a jerk.  It didn't take long for you to settle down though. Soon enough, you were petting Tai and drifting off. You leaned up and kissed his nose before giving him a mumbled goodnight followed by an "I love you"
Tai smiled tiredly and licked your hand in response before he too surrendered to sleep.
~~~~~
Taishiro was seriously starting to lose it. He had been your pet for five months now and it was starting to catch up to him. It was safe to say at this point that he adored you. He found himself looking forward to spending the day with you. He loved spending time with you, no matter what you were up to. He liked the way you talked to him like he was still human. You were so funny and kind and he was getting addicted to your laugh.
He wasn't foolish enough to mistake what he was feeling. He had fallen for you. Hard. This complicated things. He was a dog. He wasn't supposed to love you. Sure he had been human before and was still a human in his mind, but that didn't change the fact that the situation was messed up. He wasn't sure what he was going to do, but he knew things had to change.
He was startled out of his ramblings by you rattling his leash. You were wearing his favorite outfit on you since the weather had warmed up. You had on black shorts and a tank top accompanied by the too big fat gum hoodie.
"Hey carebear, up for a walk? The park is beautiful right now!"
He couldn't deny you anything if he tried. He bounded over to you, tail in overdrive. You snorted in amusement as he bumped his nose against your cheek when you clipped his leash on.
"Eager today?" You asked cheerfully, bumping his shoulder playfully with your hip.
The two of you were quickly out the door and on your way to the park. Once you reached it, you closed your eyes and tilted your face towards the sun as you enjoyed the fresh breeze that carried the scent of freshly mowed grass and the sound of happy chatter from the other park goers.
You beamed at Tai as you started along the trail. He was pleased you were so happy. Even though he loved how you looked, you were always a bit shy about how you looked when you went out to the park with him. You had confided in him that the joggers on the trail made you a bit self-conscious. He saw your outfit and attitude today as a step in the right direction. You were just enjoying the nice day and a nice walk, nothing else.
After about an hour of walking, you settled onto a shaded bench, hoodie now tied around your waist by the sleeves due to the heat. Fanning yourself lightly, You sighed in relief.
"We should head home soon buddy, you must be dying in this heat!"
Tai could only pant in agreement, the heat seeping through his fur. Apparently, this breed thrived in colder climates.  He perked up though when he saw an ice cream cart a few meters away. He grabbed the edge of your shirt and whined to get your attention.
You laughed and allowed him to lead you, confused but interested nonetheless. It quickly became apparent where he was taking you. You rolled your eyes and ruffled his fur on his head.
"You want a cold treat, huh bud? Fine. But only this once as a treat."
You smiled and walked over to the vendor and purchased a scoop of vanilla icecream for Tai and (Favorite flavor) for yourself. Content with your purchase, you hurried back to the bench. Tai was dancing from foot to foot, elated to be getting ice cream after such a long time without the frozen treat. It was just as heavenly as he remembered. Setting the paper bowl on the ground for him, you settled back on the bench and ate yours.
All was going fine until a jogger stopped in the shade nearby. You gave her a polite smile and she nodded in response. Her gaze was friendly enough until it drifted from your face to your frozen treat. She grimaced and looked you up and down before giving a disapproving tut and continuing on.
The sweet taste of the ice cream quickly began to become bitter in your mouth as her look of judgment flickered through your mind.  You bit your lip as tears began to sting the corners of your eyes. Setting the bowl aside, you unknotted the hoodie from your waist and zipped it up to your chin. Tai was surprised to see your transformation when he looked up from his clean bowl.
Giving a tight smile, you threw away both paper bowls.
"I think we should head home, carebear. It's been a long day."
Tai trailed after you with uncertainty, not liking this muted version of the (y/n) he loved. You were subdued, smile there, but clearly fake.  He quickly found the source of your discomfort when the original jogger passed with a friend, whispering about you and the ice cream. You wouldn't have been able to hear the cruel words, but being a dog did not afford Tai the same deafness. What he heard made him livid.
How dare they? How dare they talk about his gummy bear like that?! You were perfect to him and they were putting you down as if they had any right. He couldn't help the deep growl that left his throat as he bared his teeth at the two.
You whipped around at the sound, having never heard so much as a threatening whine from him before.
"Taishiro! What's gotten into you?" You worriedly tugged him away, hastily leading him back towards the apartment.
Once you reached home, you dropped to your knees in front of him, cupping his face with your hands as you looked him over.
"What happened there, bud? You doing okay?"
He was touched by your worry, but truly he was more worried about you. He knew you were never the most confident in yourself, so to see someone so cruelly tear that away from you made him angry. You deserved the world and he was not going to stand by while someone hurt you. He licked your cheek in an effort to calm you, reassuring you that he was alright now.
Throwing your arms around his neck, you happily buried your face in his shoulder, taking comfort in his soft warmth. After a few minutes of just snuggling against him, you stood and unclipped his leash.
"Go on bud, I'll be there in a sec."
You removed your shoes before heading to the kitchen. You fed Tai and hesitated in front of the fridge before going to your room. Tai was not going to let that slide. He quickly followed you and grabbed the edge of the hoodie to drag you back to the kitchen. Once you saw the destination, your face pinched in annoyance.
"it's okay Tai, I'm not hungry tonight. You eat up. I'm going to head for bed."
As you started to head for your room again, Tai once again snagged your jacket.
"Tai, I said drop it." Your tone was firm this time, not in the mood for his antics. He repeated it once more time, this time he growled to punctuate how serious he was taking this.
"Taishiro, let go. I am going to bed, and that's final."
When he held fast to the hoodie, you had had enough and unzipped the article of clothing. Letting it fall limp in his grip, you went to your room and closed the door, eliminating his chances of getting you out, what with the lack of thumbs.
Had you known how to speak dog, you would have heard some fairly colorful language on the other side of your door. You did your best to ignore it though and got ready for bed.
While Taishiro was impulsive and determined to solve problems, your stubbornness was easily a match for him. He paced anxiously in front of your door before he heard you rap your knuckles against your side. He waited for the telltale twist of the knob, but he was disappointed.
"Goodnight Carebear. I love you, be a good boy out there, alright?"
He was beyond frustrated now. You refused to listen to him and had isolated yourself with your thoughts and he couldn't get to you. He fumed silently, his heart breaking for you as he tried to come up with ways to encourage you to feel better about yourself. He eventually settled down with a discouraged huff and hoped he would have a clearer mind in the morning.
He did not end up sleeping until morning. In the late hours of the night, he woke to a strange feeling coursing through him. Tingles and warmth spread through his limbs like fire through his veins. He shut his eyes tightly as he weathered through the sensation. The last time he felt like this was when he was hit by that godforsaken animal quirk that got him into the whole mess.
Once it felt like it had reached its peak, it vanished altogether with a quiet pop. The relief was immediate. Tai carefully opened his eyes before pausing in confusion. The room looked completely different. He was seeing it from an all-new perspective. When he tried to move, he was stunned to discover the reason for his new line of sight. He was human again. He gasped and immediately pinched himself, pleased to find that this was not in fact a dream.
He was elated. However, something important had not come back with the transformation. His clothes were missing. He briefly considered waking you up to ask for help, but quickly vetoed that idea. That was a good way to traumatize you and get arrested. He decided his best choice was to call his agency. They had plenty of his spare costumes and clothes and were actually fairly close to your apartment.
He snagged your phone from where you had left it on the counter in your haste to escape to your room. He took a moment to marvel at the size difference between the two of you. Though he was in his skinny form, he had gotten to know you from the perspective of someone smaller than you so the shift in perspective was disconcerting.
The call to his agency took longer than he hoped it would. He had to give a short summary of what had happened before promising to give a full account the next day. It was tiring, but he was soon dressed and comfortable. He decided he would let you sleep and spring this whole thing on you at a much more decent hour.
~~~~~~~
Without any clue of the mess that was soon to be, you dragged yourself out of bed the next morning. You were decidedly crankier due to your favorite cuddle buddy being locked out of your room by yours truly. You were starting to regret your tantrum and resolved to yourself that you shouldn't have let the incident at the park get to you. Rubbing your eyes with a yawn, you stepped out into the living room only to freeze as a heavenly smell grabbed your senses. Picking up your hoodie from where Tai had left it by your door, you slipped it on and followed your nose to the kitchen.
You froze for the second time in the brief time you had been awake. There was a man in your kitchen. But not just any man, the man you had been crushing on since you had first seen him in action shortly after you had moved. Fat gum was in your kitchen, and... cooking breakfast?
You concluded that this was simply an elaborate dream and walked in to stand next to him.
"Whatever you're making smells amazing."
He turned around so quickly that you almost got whacked upside the head with a spatula.
"(y/n), gummy bear, you're awake!"
His smile was absolutely radiant and your cheeks quickly retaliated with a dusting of red.
"Y-yeah. Good morning. "
He pulled a chair out at the counter for you and you quickly complied, sitting and watching him with awe.
"I just made french toast. I hope you don't mind."
He placed a plate in front of you with the prettiest breakfast you had ever seen on it.
"Best dream ever," you mumbled to yourself before taking a bite, almost melting at the taste.
Tai grimaced and rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.
"It's, uh, not a dream sugar. I'm actually here. Have been for a while actually. It's pretty hard to explain."
You listened patiently before shaking your head and pointing your fork at him.
"Yeah, no. There's no way this isn't a dream. There isn't a single realistic thing in this whole sequence. The man of my dreams makes me breakfast? Yeah, a nice domestic fantasy, but just that. A fantasy."
You made a vague gesture with the fork between the two of you.
"Besides, you are so far out of my league."
He frowned and stepped forward, flicking your forehead lightly.
"Now you cut that out. I am perfectly in your league. Don't you dare badmouth yourself again, honey."
You pouted and clutched your forehead in pain before realization started to dawn, pout fading into a look of pure shock.
"You can't feel pain in dreams..." you murmured absently.
"And I told you, it's not a dream. Now eat your breakfast and I'll explain."
You nodded dumbly and shoveled another forkful of the french toast into your mouth as Tai looked on encouragingly. He leaned on the counter.
"So, I was hit by a quirk roughly six months ago. This quirk was suped up on an experimental quirk enhancement drug. "
he frowned as he remembered getting caught in the blast of gas that had formed after the criminal's quirk went haywire.
"This quirk turned me and several others into animals. The pros tried everything and weren't able to reverse it. Those of us struck by it had to resolved ourselves to spending the rest of our lives as animals."
You nodded along, thoroughly invested in the story
"Eventually, we were relocated to a pet store for care from a trusted parent of one of the heroes hit by the quirk. You may know her as Inko Midoriya."
At this revelation, you nearly choked on your food.
"WAIT! YOU MEAN, ALL THIS TIME... you...My dog Tai, That was you?" Your voice rose in both pitch and volume as both horror and embarrassment took over.
Tai simply laughed and took your hands, rubbing soothing circles on the back of them.
"It's alright gummy bear, it all worked out. I wouldn't have wanted anyone else to have taken care of me in such a vulnerable state. Sorry if I scared you."
You looked from his hands holding yours to the yellow sleeves of your hoodie before you quickly snatched your hands back and buried your face into them.
Tai had the nerve to laugh.
"sorry to fluster you. But I'm glad I could finally tell you the truth."
He had to lean in close to hear your muffled response.
"My crush was my dog!" You wailed into your hands, face alight with a bright blush.
He carefully moved your hands away before tilting your chin up tenderly.
"We can talk about this later if you want, maybe over coffee?"
You looked at him in disbelief.
"Are, are you asking me on a date?"
He grinned and kissed your nose.
"I most certainly am. I'd be a fool to not after all the time I've spent falling in love with you."
