Thankfully, I finished my last read just in time for my book club. I was so glad to be done with it. I also wasn’t alone as nearly everyone had found it hard going. At least, if they hadn’t minded it before, they disliked it by the end! Not a great way to start the New Year.

I think I’m on to more of a winner with my current read. It’s revolves around the murder of a young girl but focusing on the effect it has on a group of women. So, instead of the usual crime fiction, this sounds like an really interesting premise.

It’s also much better written than the last one. If I hadn’t been so tired last night, I’d have found it difficult to stop reading last night.

Maurice A (mostly) hopeful love story, centred around the sort of love that dare not speak its name, and indeed a work of art condemning the attitudes and laws of British society, mostly written before the First World War but only published in 1970 after Forster's death, as he wished. Can't imagine having this novel shut away for over 50 years... can't imagine having to shut away love. If you know the book, amusingly I finished reading this tonight whilst my train passed through Penge. But not that Penge. Penge, London... First book from my TBR list for this month. . "Under red skies - three generations of life, loss and hope in China" by Karoline Kan ⭐⭐⭐ . . It is a Biography about life in China. Her life, her mother's and grandmother's life. Everything written from her perspective. About One-child policy. Feminism. Education... and many more controversial topics in China's culture and society. This is a book you can learn a lot from. At least I did. It is an interesting reading. . . . . Disclaimer:  5 stars books are my all-time favorites.  4 stars books I really like.  3 stars books are alright books. I don't regret reading it, but I am not going to re-read any of these.  2 stars are books I didn't like.  I rarely give 1 star out of respect to author. Loved the second book in Pat Barker's First World War era set Regeneration trilogy, The Eye In The Door - even better than the first one perhaps. The duality of the human lives presented is fascinating, riffing on the Jeckel & Hyde story. Whether it's focussing on father-son relationships, sexuality, memory/creation, pschology, patriotism and nationalism and pacifism and spying. Lots of looking. Observing. Being seen. Amazing writing. I feel it's a shame i have come upon her novels relatively late on.
