Yoga is not perfect- there are issues in yoga like everything else & one of the ways we perpetuate these issues... rigid teachings that are passed down without question. I have heard so many times that yoga is "ancient & it is a perfect practice" and therefore we should never change it, let it evolve or try to update it. I think that is ridiculous. 馃憠 people do not live the same lives today as we did 50 or 100 years ago. We know more about the body and how it works today and we are learning more every day. 馃挜Why not acknowledge these changes and allow the practice to reflect it, instead of staying stuck. 馃挜 I always come back to the phrase: when you know better you do better. As we know more about the body we can teach better ways to care for it. FUNCTION over DOGMA 馃憤 if you have a teacher or lineage that does not allow or encourage you to ask WHY...you need to go somewhere that does. 馃挜FUNCTIONAL馃挜As an Occupational Therapist this is one of my favorite words! How does this (movement, exercise, posture or tool) improve a person's function? How do the elements of yoga practice impact how a person is able to FUNCTION in the rest of their day? In a world where social media is pushing asana toward the realm of contortion I constantly come back to the question of WHY? 馃憠 WHY are we doing this posture? What function does it serve...will they be able to get up off the floor more effectively, will this prevent falls, does this improve body awareness...? Why Study Anatomy for Yoga? To understand INDIVIDUAL VARIATION! Not everyone has the same bone structure, joint surfaces are not all the same and proportions are different from person to person...and that impacts the way we move 馃憠馃憠 "Structure Dictates Function" 馃憟馃憟 So when you look at a picture of a bone or a skeleton in a book keep in mind that is a "perfect" looking skeleton and it is not what your students are working with...they are all slightly different! 馃挜 This makes sense when you look at actual human bones and see how different they can be 馃憠 go on Paul Grilly's website & look at his amazing BONE pictures to really understand the importance of INDIVIDUAL VARIATION & how that shows us thare are no universal alignment principles that will work for all yoga students! FREE NATURAL BREATH: if you have not read "The Breathing Book" by Donna Farhi i highly recommend you get it. She gives a much needed new perspective on working with the breath that is different from the strong manipulation of Pranayama. Instead, this type of breath awareness is about letting go of the things that prevent the breath from moving naturally and freely within our body. GRAVITY ...not just a John Mayor song 馃槤 something I like to think about a lot in yoga. Gravity is always there & i think we often forget about its impact on what we are doing- but it is especially important in yoga when we change our body orientation so frequently. Why Study ANATOMY for Yoga Teachers?? #2: knowledge of the body becomes a foundation for PROBLEM SOLVING & CRITICAL THINKING ( one of the most important skills we can cultivate as effective yoga teachers!) When we run into those gray areas- what would you do in thos situation..."it depends"...we apply our skills of reasoning built on a foundation of knowledge about the body 馃挜the body is soo complex there is no way for us to know everything...therefore if we are able to reason & problem solve through issues our clients/students are having (this involves some trial & error + communication back & forth) we can work toward a solution that is good for that individual! WHY study YOGA ANATOMY? 馃挜 1: to understand why there is soo much gray area! 馃憠 It would be way easier to say that we ALWAYS do this pose for back pain- or we NEVER do this pose if you have back pain...BUT it just doesnt work like that. 馃憟 The body is too complicated and there is so much variation from person to person, and there are so many different causes for something like lower back pain...soo what do you do with someone that has back pain in yoga...it completely depends on the individual situation. BREATHING: yoga asana practice is rooted in mindfulness & the breath...but have you ever tried to FREE your breath? Instead of forcing an inhale or an exhale at a specific time...instead of constantly using Ujjayi breath...what if you allow the breath to move and become the observer, the same way we become the observer of the mind during meditation. 馃挜When i tried to do this i would constantly catch myself going back into Ujjayi- years of practice with the ocean breath have created an unconscious habit that was surprisingly challenging to let go of. I am not saying this breath practice is bad...just that it should be fully in my awareness when i do or do not use it. The LYMPHATIC SYSTEM does not have an internal pump (like the way the heart moves our blood) it relies on MOVEMENT to create a "muscle pump" effect.
