My Grandfather was a pioneer in preventive medicine, and a brilliant gastroenterologist who strongly believed all disease stems in the gut. Elimination and detoxification are the foundations of our health. The digestion system alone has such a huge impact on our overall quality of life. This list obviously includes us all at some point, and well, that's kind of the point. Detoxing is crucial, but it doesn't have to be drastic. Start small with a warm glass of lemon water every morning and increase your intake of plants and veggies. #TheFuddhist #Detox #GutHealth #HealthyLifestyle #Probiotics #Prebiotics #Fermentation #Health #FoodMatters #Mindfulness #Nutrition #FoodIsMedicine #Teatox #Tea #DetoxTea #Glutamine #Healing #Happy

We always have the opportunity to choose how to respond to external events. Always. Our responses will ultimately determine the quality of our lives, irrespective of the crappy circumstances or shitty vibes that surround us. The best advice I'd ever been given is to simply let go of any expectations that people in our lives should behave a certain way. Please do not confuse this with allowing people to walk all over you, or not speaking your truth. If you feel someone is not truly being supportive, or being a good friend, boyfriend, girlfriend, co-worker, boss, etc, you should always voice your truth. But after you do, the responsibility is now on you to either remove that person from your life, or fully accept them as they are. Don't stress or concern yourself over someone else's ill behavior. For the way the act is not something you will ever be able to control. Like the wise Wayne Dyer said, that is something that they alone have to live with. Focus on you. Your feelings are your responsibility. You are always in control. Don't ever give that power over to anyone else. Pay attention to the way you react to things today. And take whatever steps necessary to guard your light. One Love my Fuddhies. #TheFuddhist #Awareness #Karma #Consciousness #Power #Control #Responsibility #Kindness #Truth #Courage #PersonalDevelopment #Growth #Wisdom #Zen #Happy

Say hello to little Nela. A 5 yr old immigrant who didn't speak English. A little girl who spent the first three months of Kindergarten crying because she was placed in a glass booth with headphones on during ESOL, as she slowly learned the English language. Scared and sad to be left alone every day in an environment where she couldn't communicate with anyone. Harassed and mocked by her peers in the process. My first two words were cat and bathroom. But that was just the beginning. With two incredibly hard working immigrant parents by my side, I found the strength, courage, and love to conquer many more dreams since. Ten years of performances on stage with the Rockville Ballet Company. The first freshman on the University of MD dance team. A University of MD Dean's Scholar, graduating cum laude. Writing, hosting, and producing my own television show at 20 years of age. FUSE's original VJ, hosting a 5 yr. live show across from Madison Square Garden. Radio stints on LA's KLSX and NY's KTU. The first female sideline reporter for ESPN's WSOP coverage. The first Latina on ESPN's college football roadshow. The first Latina to cover NASCAR. Host of NBC's Poker After Dark, and FoxSport's World Poker Tour. Host of MTV's Top Pop Group with Mario Lopez, VH1's Dance Cam Slam, and my own beach series on Travel Channel. Host of ESPN's first late night sports entertainment show, UNITE. Creator of The Fuddhist and Tiny Food Explorers. Here I am. But my first great accomplishment was graduating Kindergarten. That was my tipping point. As I proudly held up my diploma for Dad, with my fierce mama by my side; I knew I could accomplish anything. Whatever dreams you have, fervently, and fearlessly pursue them. #TheFuddhist #InternationalWomensDay #WomenEmpowerment #Immigrant #FollowYourDreams #Believe #Goals #Courage #Happiness #Relentless #Passion #Focus #HardWork #Love #GirlsRule (at East Silver Spring Elementary)

The true cost of clothing is harrowing. This is an aspect of health that cannot be ignored. Excessive clothing consumption, something that we truly do not NEED for our survival, is threatening our environment and ironically our ability to survive on it. As fast as we purchase clothing, we discard it at an equally shocking pace. This unconscious disposability has added up to more than 11 million tons of textile waste; and that's just in the U.S. alone. Even more disturbing is the human price tag on these cheap purchases. The real cost comes at a grave price, one that robs humans of their dignity and massively pollutes our planet. I encourage you to support your local flea market, and purchase from second hand stores. It's incredibly satisfying to walk away with bags full of beautiful clothes, knowing you've lowered your carbon footprint in the process. Not to mention it's super fun and crazy affordable! Get inspired from my @mealandamakeover co-founder and hilarious fashionista friend, @iammelissalynn - She literally lives in these treasure troves, bargain-hunting beautifully crafted vintage pieces. Treasure hunting at our local flea market, is pure FLOW in action! #TheFuddhist #MealAndAMakeover #Environment #SustainableFashion #ThriftStores #EcoFashion #SecondHand #FleaMarket #ConsciousConsumer #SupportLocal #FairTrade #Fashion #Recycle #Bargain #SaveThePlanet #SmartFashion (at Melrose & Fairfax Flea Market)

We must start to explore, and contemplate our thinking, not our circumstance. According to Dr. Carlson, it's our learned thought system that greatly reduces our ability to experience and access our wisdom. When our attention is placed on the past or future, it's been proven that our quality of life will diminish, instead of improve. As thoughts enter our consciousness, we have the power to feed them, or dismiss them. But, if we are not aware of our thoughts, we cannot harness that power. Let's begin to become gentle observers of our minds, without judgement. Any time you feel sad, anxious, worried, alone, scared...or any negative feeling at all, PAUSE, and pay very close attention to the thoughts that you are holding in your mind. Almost always the thought is about some future event, or some unpleasant past event. You are always in control. All you have to do is pay attention my Fuddhies. Don' t let your thoughts pull you away from happiness. #TheFuddhist #Thoughts #Mind #Consciousness #Awareness #Feelings #BecomeTheObserver #ThoughtsShapeReality #Zen #Wisdom #Power #Reality #Mindfulness #Feels #StayPositive #Present

It's Not Woo Wee. It's Science. Research is now proving that those who meditate at least two hours per week have less atrophy in parts of the brain, and better brain connectivity. This finding is finally shedding light on the fact that the practice of meditation can help slow the progression of Alzheimer's. Fact: Baby boomers and the elderly population are getting older; and so are their brains. It is not a coincidence that cognitive decline and dementia have increased substantially. Anyone that has been affected by having a loved one battle with Alzheimer's or dementia, knows how painful this reality is for everyone involved. For me personally, it was one of the most heart wrenching moments I've ever had to endure. It's when I turned to meditation the most. Meditation protects our brain by increasing the protective tissues, and decreasing the stress hormone cortisol, which has actually been known to increase the risk of developing dementia. Incredibly, the mental processes during meditation actually trigger the growth of new brain cells! Meditation also helps us feel more calm, and less isolated. Loneliness and stress, are feelings that also lead to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's. A recent study out of Germany has shown that the brains of people who meditate regularly, are on average 7 years younger than the person's actual age! This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the restorative and healing benefits of developing a daily meditation practice. Turn back the clock and boost your brain health, by simply sitting for 1 minute a day. Start there. Don't try to to control anything. Don't make it more complicated than it is. Allow the thoughts to arise, close your eyes and breathe. 🙏 #TheFuddhist #Meditation #Science #Mindfulness #MeditationPractice #Silence #Stillness #Peace #Calm #Consciousness #Awareness #Thoughts #Practice #Namaste #Breathe #Quiet #Love #Zen #HealthyLifestyle

I respect and study Japanese culture because I believe we can learn a lot from the some of the longest living humans on Earth. The Japanese have the lowest rates of cancer and heart disease than anywhere else in the world. Although it's not always about food, it should be noted that the Japanese also happen to be the greatest consumers of seaweeds. The longevity of the people of Okinawa is believed to be partially due to their regular consumption of sea vegetables. Seaweed and marine algae are vegetables from the sea that have long been considered nature’s secret for a long and healthy life. They have been around for over 3,000 years and traditionally used in Asia to treat cancer, heart disease, and thyroid problems. Harvard University published a paper proposing that kelp (kombu and wakame) consumption might be a factor in the lower rates of breast cancer in Japan. The incredible healing effects sea vegetables have on bone health, hormonal health, and weight loss are unparalleled! Sea vegetables are also a valuable treatment for other immune system-compromising diseases such as Candida, chronic fatigue, HIV, arthritis, and even allergies. For someone like myself who struggles with anemia, seaweed also contains more iron than beef. And then there's the beauty aspect. Ditch every expensive cream you own, and dive into some seaweed! It is one of the most potent anti-aging foods you can eat. Adding seaweed to your diet can help minimize cellulite development on the skin by purifying it and giving your body a healthy toned look. These incredibly powerful sea vegetables help rid the body of heavy metals like lead, mercury and other pollutants. Beauty is found in the gut. And seaweed will surely make you glow! Some of my favorite types of seaweed include nori, kombu, arame, kelp/wakame, dulse, and Irish moss. Google them right now :) Bottom line: sea vegetables have more concentrated nutrition than any other vegetable grown on land. So be adventurous, and choose to eat something that will be a catalyst for a long, and healthy life. Start with seaweed snacks ;) #TheFuddhist #Longevity #Okinawa #Seaweed #Health #HealthyFood #HealthyLifestyle #Japan #Beauty

The Grapefruit Gift That Keeps On Giving. Say hello to my all time favorite citrus! This fabulous fruit is LOADED with vitamin C, making it a mega immune booster! This is how I ward off those pesky colds. Grapefruit juice is something I consume almost daily, so the key is most definitely to focus on 'prevention'. This magical citrus boasts health boosting nutrients such as, vitamin A, B1, B2, B5, B6, biotin, copper, iron, folate, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium, potassium, zinc bioflavonoids, and lycopene to name a few. Grapefruits help with inflammatory issues like asthma, chest congestion, as well as osteo+rheumatoid arthritis. It also aids in the prevention of kidney stones, colon cancer, and tumors. This fiber packed fruit also helps lower LDL (bad) cholesterol, as well as eliminate harmful toxins from the body. Due to it's high water content (90%) and abundant amount of vitamin C, grapefruits are essential for producing healthy collagen; keeping your complexion plump and smooth! I am a firm believer that once you educate yourself on the transformative power of foods, your taste buds start to change, and you begin to enjoy the foods that will help heal and nourish you. Read my latest blog on this oh-so merry citrus, and why you should start flooding your cells with the G-juice STAT! Buh bye cellulite and hello flawless skin :) Merry Christmas! #TheFuddhist #MerryChristmas #Grapefruit #Health #Healing #Prevention

Start paying attention to the things that light you up! What makes you smile the most? What do you genuinely enjoy doing? What are you naturally drawn to? What makes you happy? Whatever THAT is, do it more. The things that excite you are not random. Don't worry about answering life's greatest question about WHY you are here, and simply start acting on the things that excite you each day. Get out of your head, and into your heart by DOING. When I start to feel down, I stop what it is I'm doing (which is mostly thinking weep womp thoughts) and I start DOING the things I love. Follow what excites you. That excitement is who and what you are. ❤️✨🙏#TheFuddhist #FollowYourDreams #Flow #BeHappy #GoodVibes

The Science of Epigenetics is finally making its way center stage! Dr. Bruce Lipton's groundbreaking 'Biology of Belief', blew my mind when I read a few years back. I've been a staunch follower of Epigenetics ever since. The most important take away is that you are NOT a victim of your genes. The other fundamental principle is that your mind controls your biology. That’s what the placebo effect is all about; the mind believes the pill will work and so it does. The cells of your body are merely following instructions given by the nervous system, by the brain. The nervous system does the interpretation. This becomes very apparent when two people react to the same scenario with very different reactions, one positive and one negative. As your perception changes, you change the message that your nervous system communicates to the cells of your body. Epigenetics proves that your genetic activity is largely determined by your thoughts, attitudes, and perceptions. Every minute of every day, your body is physically reacting and changing, in response to the thoughts that run through your mind. This is where a daily mindfulness and gratitude practice can have incredibly beneficial effects on your overall health. You are powerful beyond belief. Remember that. #TheFuddhist #YourThoughtsProgramYourCells

On episode 3 of our @talkingshiftpodcast, Tom and I had the distinct pleasure of chatting with @drjkahn, a world-renowned vegan cardiologist and the best-selling author of The Whole Heart Solution.🌱❤️ Dr. Kahn is a renegade cardiologist, and summa cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan School of Medicine, who isn't worried about public opinion or what's taboo, and has no problem telling it how it is! It's been a month since I left Ireland, yet I still reminisce about my breathtaking drive around the Dingle peninsula. It was a beautifully cold morning, and the sun accompanied me during my two hour journey before slowly fading away as I headed North. Apart from the lovely sheep and cows that grazed in silence, I felt as if I was the only soul on the peninsula. The force was most definitely with me😉 My final stop: Ballyferriter, the magical location where a big part of Star Wars:The Last Jedi was shot. Producers had fallen in love with this location, understandably so! A replica of the sixth-century monastic settlement had been recreated on top of Ceann Sibéal on the Dingle Peninsula. The site is supposed to be the planet Ahch-To, home to the First Jedi Temple where Luke Skywalker has been hiding away in exile. Star Wars fan or not, Dingle will steal your heart forever.❤️ This is why I travel. #TheFuddhist #TravelThatInspires #DinglePeninsula #StarWars #TheLastJedi #Ballyferriter (at Ballyferriter)

A simple step to boost your own body's detoxification system is to end your last meal somewhat early and cap it off with a quality tea. A #teatox will help you flush out toxic waste, lose weight, burn stored fat, cure digestion woes, clear up skin, increase your energy levels and help you turn down the dial on stress.
