Ready for round 2 of Merlin movie magic? Merlin Cinema: Genre Fest is here!

Its beginning. The wait is over. The writing period is over. It's now time to post our creations and spread cheer and some Merlin movie magic!

For the next 3 weeks we'll be celebrating the various genres of cinema. From drama to comedy to horror to historic and sports to western and many, many more. Each day we'll unveil a new genre and participants will post their fanworks for that genre. The fanworks will be posted primarily on Ao3 but authors can also post their headers or stories on Tumblr and tag us and we'll reblog them!

Inspired to post something but forgot to sign up? Worry not! This year, we are running a more relaxed version of the fest. Meaning, that sign ups run until the end of the fest i.e. amnesty week. Anyone can sign up anytime and post something. You can find our info post with sign up information, rules, posting information right below.

Worried about not finishing on time? No issues! The format of the fest is incredibly easy and flexible. I.e. drabbles, drawbbles, gifs anything will suffice. It's the creativity that we value. It is a fest centred around movies, where participants can take any films listed on IMDB – new, old, short, feature, animated, etc. – and turn them into Merlin fanworks. Just like Reel Merlin.

How does this work?

This year we are not running the conventional version of the fest, instead, we'll be running a lighter, more relaxed version of the fest. The theme this round is film genres. Genre is one of the most important parts of any cinematic production. It's the foundation on which a movie stands upon. So, this year, we'll be celebrating film genres!  We have 11 delectable movie genres for you to enjoy and get inspired from such as Action, Comedy, Romance, Fantasy etc. Each day in March will be dedicated to a particular film genre and participants will post their fanworks related to the genre on that specific day. Please check out our Schedule for this year to more more about the general schedule and the genre-specific posting dates.

To participate in the fest, please read through our Info on the fest and all of our Rules and Guidelines. Even if you've read them before, make sure to read them again as we have made considerable changes and additions. Then click the Sign-up link below to sign up. Well, here’s a chance to turn your headcanons into reality. We bring to you Merlin Cinema, the love child of Reel Merlin and Reel BBC Merlin (both our predecessors) – a fest where you turn films into Merlin AU’s!

What is Merlin Cinema?

Just like Reel Merlin, Merlin Cinema is a fest centred around movies. Participants can take any movie on IMDB – new, old, short films, feature films, animated films, etc. – and turn them into Merlin fanworks during the fest period.

Important info for Merlin Cinema Round 2 (2024)

This year we are not conducting the usual version of the fest, instead, we'll be conducting a more relaxed and light version of the fest while still giving plenty of chance for all creators to engage and tickle their creative bones. This year, our theme is:

Genre Fest!

What is this exactly and how will it work?

This year, we are focusing on Film Genres, namely the dozen or so genres like Action, Adventure, Romance, Drama, Comedy etc... Participants will have the option to decide which Genre their fanwork belongs to in the sign-up forms. There are 11 delectable options to inspire and choose from. The form is editable for the participants so they will have the option to change their chosen genre any time. 

As for posting...

Think of it as Merlin week or any Tumblr based fest nowadays. There are 11 chosen dates in March for each genre during which the participants will post their fanworks belonging to that genre on the date specified for it. Example: for Comedy, participants must post their fanworks which has comedy as it's genre on the date which has been dedicated to comedy. The mods will provide the groundwork for it by  posting info, blurbs and moodboards hyping participants and audiences up alike.

Announcement!

Due to time constraints and mod unavailability this year, we will NOT be running the usual version of the Merlin Cinema Fest. But to keep the yearly dose of Merlin-movie-magic going and for everyone who's already picked their movie for this round and is eagerly waiting for the fest to return, we have decided instead to run a shorter, more laid-back round of the fest.
