Merlin: Well, I think I might be able to help.

Arthur: You, Merlin? You haven't the faintest idea what it takes to become a knight. Courage, fortitude, discipline...

So Arthur mistakenly thought Merlin offered to become his knight and this was his reaction. Once again, the obvious counterargument would've been the First Code of Camelot, according to which only noble families' members could become knights.

I find it fascinating Arthur's first reaction when he thinks Merlin is contemplating knighthood is not the code. The Code! Merlin, you, a peasant, could never-

No. He instead goes on listing all these virtues (some of which Merlin is not lacking and Arthur is aware but not the point). Arthur simply doesn't share Uther's principles! It's episode five and he DOES NOT believe that only nobles are worthy of his trust. And sure, we'd known this since Valiant, but this reaction here – it's proof that his first instinct is to judge a person by their qualities instead of their class. And he's like this even subconsciously. It's like he'd be uncomfortable even to joke at the expense of his people. Like here, he tries making a real argument about Merlin – which is clearly faulty and complete nonsense and comes from a place of gay panic – but you see that he puts in the effort.

And it's not like Arthur is offering to knight peasant. Not even considering it, straight up denying the possibility. But not for the (politically) correct reasons!!

Later he even speaks up on Lancelot's behalf – mind you, soon after the identity fraud – and tries to convince Uther to knight him anyway-

No I can't emphasize enough...he said pardoning Lancelot is not good enough- He directly told Uther that he must restore Lancelot to his rightful place, as a knight of Camelot.

Righful place. You must.

Like- That is bold. Unhinged. Treacherous, even.

HE'S.NOT.LIKE.UTHER.

a reminder that The Darkest Hour comes just before Merlin Buries Lancelot in the soundtrack. the darkest hour was lancelot's death. it was the moment everything went wrong. it was the moment merlin and gwen and arthur broke irreparably. merlin lost his greatest source of unconditional love, gwen lost her first love, and arthur lost his first and most loyal knight. all of them fought for him and all of them lost him regardless. then everything goes to hell.

and then you throw lancelot in the mix whom merlin and gwen are both in love with and who is also in love with gwen and merlin and even arthur

A surprising revelation that came about in this project: I don't like Lancelot as much as I thought I did. He is a solid character that I enjoy, but for every ship involving him, there is a ship that I like just a little bit more. Hence why he makes up 60% of B-tier.

look, look, you could argue that because arthur's love for lancelot is being compared to his love for gawain's in this passage, that the type of love arthur feels is the same familial love he feels toward gawain. BUT you could also argue that this passage starts by specifically saying gawain's love for lancelot is different from the love lancelot's family has for him, so when gawain's love for lancelot is compared to arthur's love for lancelot, arthur's love is also being differentiated from any familial love toward lancelot and is more similar to the love gawain feels for lancelot, even though the quanity of love arthur feels for lancelot is being juxtaposed against his familal love for gawain. therefore, if we see gawain's love for lancelot as romantic, arthur's love for lancelot should also be read as romantic. therefore, this is a win for us arthur/lancelot truthers.
