Unidentified mental health disorders in Indian Families
Psychological disorders are very common in traditional Indian families but due to certain factors and myths that exist among Indians we fail to recognize that something is going wrong with that person. The existing level of poverty in India also makes the treatment a farfetched reality. Traditionally there are a lot of myths and misconceptions that are prevalent in the Indian families about the psychological disorders especially in the rural Indian families. Most people in rural areas still attribute it to the soul and go to a local baba to ask when their child will be fine. Another fear in the minds of people is that psychologist’s use electro convulsive therapy which is not the case now and that the psychiatric drugs are sedative in nature and have a lot of side effects. Most of us also Google the side effects and stop taking the medicines not realising the fact that mental health is also as important as physical health and medicines are only given when they are considered important for the patient.
Moreover the side effects of it are regularly managed and discussed with the psychiatrist. There are certain neurotransmitters in the brain and the abnormal activity of those neurotransmitters also have an important role in maintaining the disorder and this is the reason that medicines are administered in some cases when they are necessary. Another misconception that exists  among the educated class is that psychological treatment is nothing; they just listen to you and give advice which anyone can. However, the treatment involves the use of therapy that people even the educated ones are not aware of.

We often fail to distinguish between what is normal and what is abnormal and at what point does anything normal turns into abnormal. There is some level of abnormality in all of us but the only difference between normal people and abnormal is when the intensity and level of it increases. One of the easiest ways to identify psychological disorders is by following a 4 D principle: if any behaviour, pattern or tendency fulfills these four D’s then there is a need to seek professional help.
The 4 D’s stand for
1. Danger (the mentally ill patients are either danger for themselves or others around them)
2. Dysfunction (the mentally ill patients are not able to function properly that is their work life suffers)
3. Deviance: the behaviour of the patients is deviant, that is it defies the norms set by the society and is bizarre or strange.
4. Distressing: that is the symptoms are distressing to the patient.
If someone in your family fulfils these four markers then it definitely suggests that something is going wrong with that person and you need to seek professional help.
The most common disorders that are found in Indian Families are depression. The prominent
symptoms that are seen in the patient are general sadness, loss of interest in earlier activities,
difficulty in falling asleep or excessive sleeping especially during the day, changes in appetite, excessive weight gain or weight loss, thoughts about suicide or self harm. Apart from that the person may appear to be crying most of the time. The social circle might also decrease because it is generally seen that we don’t like to talk to the person who is always sad but actually that is the only time when the person wants someone to talk. This depression can seriously impair the person’s ability to function normally and he or she may also find it difficult to even get out of the bed. A general passivity might be observed.
Apart from depression, other common psychological disorders include:
Anxiety. Anxiety is a sense of apprehension that is focused upon upcoming potential danger. All of us experience anxiety in stressful situations such as an important exam but fail to distinguish when it becomes an anxiety disorder. Understand about anxiety disorder.
Some of the common symptoms of anxiety disorder are feelings of dizziness, restlessness, panic attacks in which the symptoms are similar to a heart attack and most of the patients confuse it with a heart attack, sinking sensation, sweating, a rapid heart rate, difficulty concentrating. This anxiety impairs the ability of the individual to function normally affecting his work life and social life as well because the patient may start avoiding people due to the anxiety.
Another most commonly observed anxiety disorder is obsessive compulsive disorder. Obsessions are the excessive uncontrollable thoughts that the patient has and compulsion are the actions that are carried out by the patient in order to neutralize that thought or image. Intrusive and uncontrollable trails of thoughts about a specific thing and overthinking are common manifestations of it. India is a country where purity in terms of cleanliness is highly valued and most of the religions also emphasize purity because of which sometimes a person’s excessive concern with cleanliness seems to be normal but that actually could be a manifestation of obsessive Compulsive disorder. Some people around us are cleanliness freak and have rigid rules regarding being organized, keeping things in a particular manner and have perfectionist tendencies, being excessively religious such as doing pooja three to five times in a day and not being able to maintain that leads to excessive uncontrollable thoughts.
Obsessions could also exist in other forms such as ordering, checking the gas stoves many
times in a day, washing, unnecessary hoarding of things, counting again and again. OCD
might commonly exist with any other anxiety disorder or even with depression. Apart from Depression another commonly observed mood disorder is Bipolar. Our mood could be thought of as a continuum where the one extreme is depression that involves passivity and negativity and another extreme is mania which is a discrete period of euphoric and expansive mood which lasts for at least a week. This feeling of euphoria is different from normal expansion of mood that we normally experience because in this period the euphoria is too high that in that excitement the patient may also engage in risky activities such as being sexually involved with strangers, excessive eating, and taking drugs and also exhibits a high desire for interpersonal interactions. Between the two extremes is the neutral mood which is neither too high nor too low. Bipolar Disorder occurs when the person experiences a series of attacks of depression and elation that is experiencing the two poles. The person either appears to be very high or is depressed and the normality is found very rarely.
The disorders that have been discussed so far are the part of neurosis because the individual maintains a contact with reality. On the other hand psychotic disorders are also commonly found but most Indians are not aware of it. Psychotic disorders are the one in which a person loses contact with reality. Hallucinations and delusions are the common symptoms of schizophrenia. Hallucinations are the distortion in perception in which the person may see things such as different images or figures and perceive abnormally such as the image of a person, animal on the walls or perceiving a tree to be a person etc.

Understand about anxiety disorders
Very commonly we have seen and felt the symptoms like, butterflies in stomach, heart racing and heart pounding, feeling hot without any reason, these all symptoms come under an umbrella and form a psychological disorder called Anxiety. It’s a fear of something that is about to happen. For some there might be miniature reasons to give them goosebumps and to some those same reasons wouldn’t even make a difference. The degree of variance differs.
Anxiety is pretty common when a person is doing something whose outcome they fear. Questions like what will happen next? What if I mess this up? These are counter questions as a result of the Anxiety which a person suffers. This feeling doesn’t calm the person on the other hand it hypes them up. The butterflies of doing something new for the very first time or giving the interview, giving a presentation in front of seniors can be intimidating for that moment only because when the situation passes the feeling also passes by.
When a person stops setting foot out of their house for weeks because the fear kicks in of being in crowded places, sometimes it reminds them of past traumatic events. This is when some of the symptoms are visible and it can be diagnosed as a disorder because now the feeling and the
fear is affecting the life, social circle, environment and the individual itself.
Anxiety disorder has a wide spectrum which covers many other disorders itself which are related to Anxiety itself. One of the first is GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorder) in which the worrying is at its peak for at least 6 months which affects the social interactions of the patient as well as the environment. The most common and visible symptoms are feeling restless, muscle tension, being irritated easily, not being able to concentrate properly and difficulty in sleeping. The second disorder which accompanies Anxiety is known as Panic Disorder. A person suffering from panic disorder can suffer from panic attacks merely in seconds and can reach at its peak in no time. The
panic attacks can be triggered by some stimuli like a fearful object or a situation. The panic attacks are the repercussions of something the patient fears or has encountered in the past or some situation the patient is facing for the first time.
These panic attacks occur when the patient is either very happy or very sad due to the emotional imbalance. Young patients who when told by the doctor that something bad will happen, start weeping as the thought to them is very unsettling itself.
During Panic disorder the symptoms which are visible are sweating, trembling along with hand shaking, sometimes the feel of impending doom and being out of control. A person who has suffered from a panic disorder is constantly worried and thinks about the next panic attack;
As a result the person avoids situations and places isolating them to a limited place only.
There are many other conditions which come under the radar of Anxiety Disorder; Phobias, Paranoia and compulsions are one of them in which firstly the person fears situations and people for example the fear of heights, animals, darkness, reptiles and most commonly insects. On the other hand, compulsions are behaviors displayed by the person as a reaction to the stress. Some patients complain about their fear of not being able to enter the trains as it makes them feel claustrophobic but they still move ahead and try to counter attack their fear, as a result they start having sweaty hands, twitchy palms etc. One family member of the child suffering from anxiety said that as she (the patient) comes back from school, her socks are drenched in sweat. In
this condition the school environment is acting like the anxiety stressor which also gives unbearable headaches for long durations. These feelings are very common and felt by each and every one of us. People think that this is a reaction, this is an alarm from your brain that it can’t take stress. Nothing to be worried about these symptoms have a solution which is relaxation therapy by a psychologist and introspecting your fears. Visiting a mental health expert is a stigma in India but it is okay to seek help when required.
The rehabilitation and the cure of the Anxiety Disorder can be done both with the Psychotherapies and with Medicines. A person suffering from Anxiety disorder needs to get in touch with a psychologist as soon as the symptoms start occurring more often and for a proper diagnosis.
A professional is always required because self diagnosis is not the exact treatment or the requirement of the disorder. The therapies help in reducing the symptoms and restore the confidence of the person to face their fears. Medications are also given to some patients but with time they are reduced noticing the recovery of the person.

It is okay to meet a psychologist : The Indian Perspective
Going to see a psychologist in India even in this era is a taboo, it is a trauma and people don’t want to talk about their mental health. They fear that they will be judged and mocked by society. There are some people who are not ready to accept that they are going through
something traumatic due to fear that they will be judged. Majority of the disorders are treatable in this modern century, with so many treatments coming up with a variety as well. It takes courage drawn from about 10 people, for one person to admit that he is not well, he is not normal; there is something wrong with him. But what some people don’t understand is that the key to curing oneself starts with acceptance of one’s disorder. If only you accept after the consultation of the psychologist. Self diagnosis is dangerous because the person himself is not aware of the symptoms he possesses, also the treatment is a tricky part which has to be done by a psychologist. A psychologist is a professional who is well aware of all the disorders
and their symptoms. They can differentiate well between the symptoms of one disorder to the other. A common person on the other hand bases their knowledge based on Google and what other people say.
Whatever the discomfort or the disorder might be, some people always relate it to studies, just normal tension, or the most viral and common phrase which is used widely in India that “It’s nothing”, “Probably just a normal headache” and the third one “Everything wrong seems to happen to you only”
Tumblr media
Meeting with psychologist
Yes, agreed that things appear normal on the surface but what about the person who is going through trauma, anxiety and distress. They only are well aware of their situation and what’s going on in their head. What kind of thoughts are they bombarded with. This article is to provide the light on the darkest days that going to a psychologist takes a lot of courage. It means that the person is accepting that something is wrong with him; it means that they want to be alright and be happy again. It takes more courage to come forth than the person who sits at the back and judges.
No one has the right to judge anyone as long as you haven’t been the same situation as the other person. Everyone is different and are blessed with different abilities. Someone said that it is always okay when it is not happening to you. Empathizing is a huge deal when you put yourself in that person shoes who hasn’t slept for 2 nights, the person who is suffering day in and day out.
It’s not forbidden, it’s not something people will frown upon, because you are doing this for your own mental health. When you’ll look back you’ll see that oh I was afraid of this? Look how far I’ve come now. It doesn’t matter because it only shows that you were strong enough to withstand a storm.
Also, the people who criticize the ones who suffer, all there is to say is to imagine yourself going through traumatic situations and not being able to explain what is happening or why it is happening. Imagine everyone making fun of you, making a mockery out off your misery. The grass is always greener on the outside, peep on the inside and you’ll see for yourself. Help is always provided to the ones who need it; it's just a matter of going to a psychologist.
It’s not always that when someone suffers from a breakup has to go to a psychologist; there are other reasons as well. The spectrum of problems in a person’s life is very vast. It can regarding a woman’s mother in law, troubling children, hectic work and school life, troubles in getting along with wife, husband, sister, brother, parents, friends etc. Also, when a person suffers from long persisting headaches, when they get angry very fast, when people are not able to sleep at night, and the thoughts which occur in their minds.
People want answers and want to know what they are suffering from, seeing a psychologist would be a good idea to gain knowledge and to seek answers to the questions. There are plenty of reasons why a person visits a psychologist, apart from the above listed reasons career counseling is also one reason, marriage counseling, school counseling.
There isn’t any need to fear that the psychologist would judge you, they are in their seats to solve the problems of others, to help them so judging is out of the question. Also they have their oath of
confidentiality where they are not allowed to share the details and all the secrets one has shared with full trust. A person can vent out anything he or she wishes to share.
It is a taboo and a thing to be frowned upon in India, but the change begins with us. Mahatma Gandhi once said that “Change begins with you.” In the end only you and you have to stand and make eye contact with yourself in the mirror, not the ones who mocked you, not the ones who judged you, not the ones who didn’t understand you, but just YOU.
