It could be that in-universe, Air Nomads also consider molluscs to still be vegetarian (and thus it's a type of "meat" that Aang can eat, in which case I could see this being a very common meal for him to share with Sokka and Katara).

Cultural Cuisine: Sea Prunes

For this particular post, I’m going to be veering from canon just a little bit. Within ATLA, sea prunes are implied to be fruit. They’re compared to “ocean kumquats” in terms of taste/consistency and no one tries to stop Aang from eating them. That said, they’re never explicitly stated to be a plant, so lets take a look into the real life sea prune instead. I was inspired to write this post after @mostly-mundane-atla​ mentioned possible Water Tribe cuisine here.

“Sea prunes”, along with “Chinese slippers” and “gumboots”, are colloquial names for the black katy chiton, a small mollusk found all along the west coast of North America, from Alaska to southern California. As their many names imply, these chitons possess shells that are small, dark, and leathery. Their edible flesh is bright orange before being cooked.

Black katy chitons were a traditional food source for many coastal First Nation/Alaska Native groups and were typically cooked through steaming or boiling. So, by pure coincidence, stewed sea prunes are actually accurate to the Water Tribe’s cultural inspirations. Also, I’d like to think that another name for sea prunes in the Avatarverse would be “Earth Kingdom Slippers” or “Earth Slippers”; perhaps this term would be more commonly used in the Northern Water Tribe.

Although I’ve never eaten chiton, I’m pretty certain a stew of shellfish would be a lot tastier than actual boiled prunes. 8P

btw one of the key components of actually being in a healthy relationship is just asking for things that you want. i keep seeing posts on this website saying 'i really want to do/receive [X] but my partner has never done it'. just ask. 'nobody exchanges love letters anymore' ask. 'i want to have my partner's hair in a locket like the victorians' just ask. I'm not the best at serious posts, but that article up there reminded me of how important it is that people like you stand up for us. So hold on while I try to get this out of my mushy end-of-work-day brain.

We could fight this fight ourselves for decades trying to reach the equal laws, gender affirming trans healthcare that doesn't have a 2-5+ soul-eating years of waiting time, medical care with equal knowledge of lgbtqia+ bodies, and, what is often forgotten, inclusion in the little everyday areas of life like our way of speaking or things being set up or designed with the existence of queer people in mind.

But you joining in could get us there so much faster.

The power you have as a hetero cis person is that you set the standard for what is seen as the average way of treating us among other hetero cis people. You have been given the power of deciding what's "normal" and I'm begging you to use it.

Richard Green is a great example of to what extent your actions can help our situation, and smaller ways of support still add up to a great impact on society, and could make the days of the queer people you interact with.

Educate yourself before you speak up, but don't be silent.

Astrology's weird bc if you've only ever had fun with it and come across someone w seething hatred for it you're understandably like, what the fuck is this person's problem? But also if you've seen someone take it Too Far, any mention of it understandably becomes a red flag

Like imagine if you really liked Pokemon and you're like, "I really don't see why people would hate this unless they're just assholes for no reason?" Like it's a totally normal opinion opinion to have. But also imagine if you took a quiz and learned you were a Bug type and people stopped talking to you because they were like "It's in your nature to be emotionally manipulative." It would also be totally normal to be like "Oh okay fuck Pokemon fans then."

Now you may be like, "But the latter situation doesn't happen!" and that tells me you are fortunate because you have not dealt with the worst that the west coast of America has to offer
