Coming up on 7 years since we made this post and we are happy to report that after starting Lexapro late last year we are somehow no longer repulsed by social touch and can hug our friends and family as much as we want 🥹

We're pretty sure it is the Lexapro that changed this for us, since we switched to it very recently and haven't made any other huge lifestyle changes around the time of this change. We haven't seen any studies or anecdotal evidence of Lexapro or other SSRI's affecting comfort with social touch in humans, but we did find a study (paywalled : ( ) on vervet monkeys that suggested, "that serotonergic systems contribute relatively substantially to the mediation of grooming and approaching..." (Raleigh et. al, 1980) which indicates that increased serotonin uptake may be able to increase social touch behaviors. If any of yall know of other research that has been done into this, please lmk!

It has always been extremely difficult for us to endure craving physical affection but being unable to accept it; we had fully accepted that that need would never be met for us and we would always be closed off from the people around us in that way. Now that we can touch others we feel fulfilled in a way we could never imagine was possible before. We cuddle our friends all the time and feel even closer to them now that they are able to have their social touch needs met by us as well : )
